Airbus reveals A400M's debut flight test plan
By Craig Hoyle

Airbus Military has revealed its long-term flight-test programme for the A400M transport, with its first example expected to launch the schedule with a 3h debut flight late next week.

Aircraft MSN001 has already completed several medium-speed taxi trials to above 80kt (148km/h), and should make high-speed runs this weekend, says Eric Isorce, head of the A400M integrated flight-test operations team. The work will culminate in a rejected take-off run at about 120kt.

Ground activities conducted by the test team since mid-November have identified several minor faults, says Ed Strongman, Airbus's chief test pilot, military programmes. These have including a tachometer fault caused by loose connectors which limited the aircraft's braking, and poor anti-skid performance. A new software load has been supplied to rectify the latter hitch.

Past experiences on the A380 programme have expedited fixes to address minor electrical faults, says Strongman, who adds: "We are working 24h a day in three shifts to get the aircraft ready to fly. We are ahead of my expectations. Each time we go out, we are achieving what we wanted to, and there are no showstoppers to first flight."

MSN001 will fly with two pilots, two flight test engineers, one handling qualities specialist and one engine specialist on board, and will relay real-time information to telemetry rooms in Seville and Toulouse, enabling about 100 more personnel to monitor its performance. The aircraft is expected to lift off at a take-off weight of about 125t, says Isorce - 16t below its maximum limit.

With two of its Europrop International TP400-D6 engines being fully instrumented and with strain gauges installed on their Ratier-Figeac propellers, Strongman says clearance for the debut sortie will be "limited to VMC, clear weather conditions".

The transport's landing gear will be retracted as it climbs to an altitude of about 10,000ft (3,000m), where it will accelerate to its maximum cruise speed of 300kt/Mach 0.72 before being brought back to minimum manoeuvring speed, says Strongman. This process will be repeated before its handling qualities are assessed at a lower altitude.

Strongman expects subsequent ground inspections to last at least two days, and says: "Within a month or so, we will be building to a high rate of maybe two flights a day." The team plans to fly five days a week, with minor maintenance to be performed at night and more major work to be done at weekends.

Test activities will soon be expanded with the addition of aircraft MSN002 and MSN003 in March and May 2010, respectively. Strongman expects the work to last at least four years, with about 100h to be flown each month at peak activity.

All five test aircraft will be involved in the programme by mid-2011, and the fleet is planned to log a combined 4,370h before the A400M enters service in December 2012. Development and qualification work will be split between three aircraft based in Toulouse and two in Seville, and will also conducted at locations throughout Europe and the Americas, plus north Africa and the Middle East, says Airbus.

A400M: Friday Flight
Posted by Robert Wall at 12/9/2009 3:44 AM CST

It is now official, Airbus Military will try to fly the A400M for the first time on Friday, December 11. Takeoff should be around 10 a.m. local time in Seville, Spain, where the A400M is built.
The flight should last about 3 hours. The forecast is for a partly cloudy day, with a comfortable high of 67 deg. F (19 deg. C).
Once flight trials are underway, the clocks is ticking. Airbus Military has given itself three years between that milestone and handing the first airlifter to a customer -- France.
The A400M will arrive three years late, if things go smoothly during flight testing. There is margin in the test schedule to deal with some hiccups, but not a huge amount either.
The flight test activity will span the globe, but concentrate on Seville and Toulouse in an unusual split-base operation made necessary by the workshare allocations under the European airlifter program.
Ground preparations have been underway since Nov. 12.

Meanwhile, A400M customers remain in talks about how to restructure the loss-making, fixed-price contract.

Airbus confirms A400M first flight this Friday
By Craig Hoyle

Airbus Military has confirmed that its A400M transport is scheduled to make its first flight on 11 December, with aircraft MSN001 due to lift off from San Pablo airport near Seville around 10am local time.

The manufacturer's flight plan was confirmed on 9 December in an invitation addressed by Airbus Military managing director Domingo Ureña.

The correspondence says the debut sortie will last "between one hour and three, depending on the progress of this very first test flight". Airbus last week outlined its intention to conduct a flight of about 3h, during which the aircraft will reach an altitude of around 15,000ft (4,570m) and a maximum speed of 300kt/M0.72.

The milestone event will be attended by officials including EADS chief executive Louis Gallois and Airbus chief executive Tom Enders.

A400M: Meet the Guys
Posted by Robert Wall at 12/10/2009 2:27 AM CST

Tomorrow, Airbus Military is putting its faith in the hands of six experienced flight test professionals as they navigate the A400M through its maiden flight.

Immagine

Ed Strongman (far left), the chief military test pilot for Airbus, will be at the controls. A former RAF C-130 pilot (a few years ago, he'll be the first to admit), Strongman was also the first flight pilot for the A340-600. He's got a "meager" 11,000 flight hours under his belt, 7,000 of which have come during flight testing.
Strongman recently flew the TP400's C-130 Flying Testbed, giving him some turboprop airlifter experience again. And, owing to delays in the A400M program, he's had time for more than a few simulator sessions.
In the right hand seat will be Spaniard Ignacio "Nacho" Lombo (second from right), who was also involved in the first flight of the KC-30 multi-role tanker transport. He's got previous fighter experience on the way to logging 4,250 flight hours.
Eric Isorce (the gentleman in the back) is the senior flight test engineer. A former Colonel in the French air force, he brings perhaps the biggest bragging rights, having flown the nuclear-capable Mirage 2000N.
Jean-Philippe Cottet (far right) will oversee the TP400D turbofans and previously worked on flight test activities involving the GP7200 for the A380.
Dider Ronceray (second from left) is the flight test engineer overseeing aircraft handling qualities. He may be the most patient man on the crew: Airbus says he's been on the A400M program since 1998, which is before it was the A400M.
Rounding out the team is Gerard Leskerpit (second from right), another test flight engineer. He's flown the Transall C-160 and the C-130 when working for the French government.
The first flight aircraft has a unique feature: it is carrying an explosive to create an emergency escape hatch in the fuselage in case things go awfully wrong. The other four flight test aircraft (MSN2, MSN3, MSN4, and MSN6 -- MSN5 was stricken from the program) will not have the escape mechanism.
Degna di nota la bandiera del Sud Africa tuttora presente sulla fusoliera dell'aereo .....

A400M Takes Flight

Dec 11, 2009
By Robert Wall

The Airbus Military A400M took to the air at 10:15 a.m. on Dec. 11 — the culmination of a two-decade long struggle on Europe's part to develop a next-generation airlifter.

Immagine

Immagine

Powered by its four 11,000-shaft-horsepower Europrop International TP400D engines, MSN001 took off from the EADS facility in Seville with Airbus's chief military test pilot Ed Strongman at the controls and Ignacio "Nacho" Lombo in the right seat.

Eric Isorce is the senior flight test engineer, joined by Jean-Philippe Cottet, Dider Ronceray, and Gerard Leskerpit. Around 50 engineers in each of the two main ground facilities in Seville and Toulouse were monitoring flight test parameters.

The flight is planned to last 3 hours and be used to check out basic handling characteristics of the aircraft.

The event kicks off a flight test program that should log 4,370 hours, says Eric Isorce, the chief flight test engineer. Around 60% of the effort will be focused on the military certification, the rest to gain European Aviation Safety Agency approval — a first for a military airlifter. Five aircraft will eventually be part of the flight test program.

Airbus celebrates as A400M gets airborn
By Craig Hoyle

Airbus Military’s first A400M transport took off from San Pablo airport near Seville, Spain at 10:15 local time on its historic first flight.

Aircraft MSN001 is expected to land at around 13:00 local time, after completing a roughly 2h 45min debut flight from San Pablo.

Airbus says the first A400M has reached a top speed of 230kt (425km/h) during the flight - below the 300kt maximum originally targted, but that the aircraft has performed as expected.

Perhaps in keeping with the programme’s delayed nature, the A400M got airborne 15min later than scheduled. Some 15min into its sortie the aircraft was at 8,000ft (m) performing low speed testing, and Airbus says all is performing as expected.

Originally expected to fly in early 2008, aircraft MSN001’s 11 December debut comes as Airbus is involved in ongoing negotiations with its seven European customers over the future direction of the delayed programme.

The EADS-led company should have delivered its first operational example in October under the terms of its single development and production contract, signed in May 2003.

The A400M Has Landed
Posted by Robert Wall at 12/11/2009 6:49 AM CST

The Airbus Military A400M military airlifter has just completed its first flight. Takeoff occurred at 10:15 a.m. and the aircraft landed at 14:02 local time.
MSN001 landed at Seville under the eyes of the EADS CEO Louis Gallois, Airbus boss Tom Enders, the Spanish king, and many other dignitaries – as well as the watchful eyes of our own Douglas Barrie.

For the program, the flight is, of course, just the beginning in what will be a three-year, 4,370 hour flight test program, involving five aircraft based in Toulouse and Seville, where the aircraft final assembly line is located.

Whether the milestone flight triggers progress in inter-governmental talks to renegotiate the loss-making development and production contract remains to be seen. Owing to development problems, the 20 billion euro program is not just behind schedule, it is also over cost. Dealing with that situation has been difficult. France has been urging contractual relief, but others, notably Germany and the U.K., have been reluctant to go along. There have been plenty of talks in recent months, but little obvious progress.

The data from this flight is going to be looked at closely. The A400M isn’t expected to fly again for a couple of days. The pace of flight trials should start to pick up next year.

It's a big day for Airbus Military, there's no doubt about that. And, of course, for all those taking bets on who would fly first, the A400M or 787, Airbus beat out its main rival. Now let's see if Boeing can follow next week with the 787 first flight, as it says it plans to do.

A400M First Flight: Here Is How It Happened
Posted by Douglas Barrie at 12/11/2009 7:13 AM CST

By program standards it was an on-time departure, a mere 15 minutes later than scheduled, with the A400M completing a 3 hour 45 minute maiden flight at 2.02 p.m. local time.

Flight instrumentation glitches kept the Airbus A400M on the threshold briefly beyond its intended 10 a.m. take-off, before it departed at 10.15 a.m. Fernando Alonso, Airbus head of flight test, said flight-test related computers had to be reset twice. The glitches, he added, did not jeopardize the first flight.

Immagine

The aircraft was originally due to return at 1 p.m. local time, but the flight was extended.

The A400M departed Seville with the Corvette chase aircraft climbing to 8,000 feet where a series of initial tests were carried out, including extending the flaps in the landing configuration.

The aircraft - callsign was Grizzly 1 - was also flown in a clean configuration at up to 230 knots, and then up to 300 knots, the aircraft’s maximum operating limit speed. The final stage of the flight was used to begin to explore low-speed handling characteristics.

While the A400M was airborne, ministers from the partner nations were meeting with industry to continue to try to hammer out a final deal on the way forward for the program with regard to procurement numbers and cost.

A400M Takes Flight

The Airbus Military A400M took to the air at 10:15 a.m. on Dec. 11 — the culmination of a two-decade long struggle on Europe's part to develop a next-generation airlifter.
