Re: Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Root cause of 787 battery issues may never be found
Ref: http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articl ... ng-383483/
Ref: http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articl ... ng-383483/
Boeing says the root cause of the 787 battery failures may never be established, but that it is moving ahead with a solution aimed at getting the aircraft back in the air.
The 787 fleet was grounded on 16 January following two incidents in which their lithium-ion batteries failed after overheating and leaking electrolyte, resulting in significant charring.
In the first incident, an auxiliary power unit battery on a Japan Airlines 787 failed while the aircraft was on the ground at Boston Logan International Airport, while in the second incident, an All Nippon Airways 787 had to be diverted to Takamatsu in Japan after the crew received a cockpit alert saying that the main battery had failed.
Boeing and battery manufacturer GS Yuasa have been working with the Japan Transport Safety Bureau and the US National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the battery incidents, but no definitive cause has been found for the battery faults so far.
"In the events of Logan and Takamatsu, we may never get to a single root cause, but the process we applied to understand the improvements that can be made is the most robust process that we have ever followed," says Boeing's vice-president and chief project engineer, Mike Sinnett.
Boeing has proposed significant changes to the battery system aimed at making it easier to cool the lithium-ion cells, as well as a new containment solution which would prevent overheated battery cells from starting a fire.
It has also reworked the battery charger with reduced maximum charging levels, a higher maximum discharging level and a softened charging sequence.
The US Federal Aviation Administration has approved a certification plan for the modified systems, which will undergo rigorous laboratory testing and a validation flight test before being certified for use on the global 787 fleet.

"On Mar 27th 2013 the JTSB released another interim report in Japanese summarizing, that a "smoking gun" has still not been identified, the investigation so far has not yet led to "elucidation of the underlying cause". The JTSB reported that the puzzle about the navigation strobe lights has been solved however (see sketch below), with both APU and main batteries showing balanced voltages neither relais would be powered with the related switches off, however, with the main battery's voltage dropping to 1V a current flow from the APU battery via both relais to ground became possible, both relais activated and the wing tip and strobe lights activated despite being switched off. The wire connecting the battery case to ground was broken and showed evidence of having been blown (editorial note: implicitely suggesting prior to the battery event), however, the aircraft had no history of a lightning strike. There is no evidence, that battery charger, bus power control unit, generator control unit or battery diode module did not perform to specifications. Battery cells 1-8, especially 3 and 6, showed extensive internal damage, there is evidence that a large current flow occurred on the output of the battery towards the hot battery bus."

http://www.aviationweek.com/Article.asp ... 571377.xmlThe FAA has approved Boeing’s design modifications to the 787 battery system, a move that will allow the aircraft to reenter service once the changes are made to the fleet and verified by the FAA.
..
Two weeks ago Boeing completed its final certification test for the redesign, which included containment and venting systems for the main and auxiliary system batteries, modified charging systems and new batteries. The FAA on April 18 granted Boeing permission to resume routine production ‘B-1’ flight testing of an aircraft destined for All Nippon Airways (ANA).
