Ancora su Aerion Supersonic ... che punta decisamente a Mach 4 ...
Aerion is taking the next step in its quest for a family of supersonic jets, revealing on Monday the initial details for its second aircraft - the 50-passenger, Mach 4-plus AS3.
Fuller details of the airliner companion to its AS2 Mach 1.4 business jet are anticipated later this year, Aerion said, but sketched out a goal of reaching near-hypersonic speeds and a 7,000-nm range for the AS3.
The aircraft is anticipated to fly before the end of the decade, the company projected, adding that it will build on the AS2 that is anticipated to be in service by then.

Da Mach 4 a Mach 0 ... :eeeeek:
Supersonic aircraft developer Aerion Corp. on May 21 confirmed that it is ceasing operations of its AS2 business jet program after years of development, citing difficulty in raising the capital needed to complete production.
Employees were told of the development the same day.
The $120 million, planned Mach 1.4 AS2, scheduled for initial production in 2023 and first flight in 2024, counts Boeing and Spirit Aerosystems as investors and has been in development by Reno, Nevada-based Aerion for a decade.
The company had plans to invest $300 million to build a final assembly facility in Melbourne, Florida, and in March landed a commitment from NetJets for up to 20 AS2s.

La scelta di United Airlines ...
United Airlines said Thursday that it has reached a so-called commercial agreement with Boom Supersonic to order 15 Overture supersonic jets “once Overture meets United's demanding safety, operating, and sustainability requirements.”
The agreement also specifies options on another 35 airplanes.
Boom plans to fly a demonstrator of its supersonic concept sometime this year as it looks toward a rollout of a full-scale example in 2025 and entry into service in 2029.
Powered by three General Electric J85-15 turbojets, the composite-bodied XB-1 will fly up to Mach 2.2 ahead of the planned introduction of the 65- to 88-seat Overture.
Boom staged an online rollout ceremony for its one-third-scale XB-1 demonstrator last October and in March announced a “strategic investment” from American Express Ventures.

Immagine
The Air Force has made another investment in hypersonic aircraft, teaming up with venture capital firms to give a $60 million contract to startup Hermeus, which is looking to develop a jet that can travel at five times the speed of sound.
The deal, awarded July 30 and announced Aug. 5, is not the first time the Air Force has invested in Hermeus - a year ago, the service and the startup announced a contract worth $1.5 million to look into modifying the company’s still-in-development aircraft for the future Presidential and Executive Airlift fleet, most notably Air Force One.
Now, USAF is making a broader investment in Hermeus and looking into other potential uses for reusable hypersonic aircraft.

Russia’s aerospace industry is delaying a full-scale launch of a second-generation supersonic transport aircraft (SST2) while intensifying efforts to work out key technologies needed to deliver on that ambition.
The change in course was confirmed in a high-level government meeting last month when President Vladimir Putin himself approved a proposal by state-backed companies to develop the new Strizh (Swift) supersonic technology demonstrator to be powered by Klimov RD-93MA turbofans (a no-afterburning derivative of the MiG-35 fighter engine).
With a takeoff weight of 16 tonnes (35,273 pounds), the Strizh would serve as a platform to evaluate a package of new technologies such as pro-bionic structural airframe design (instead of classic frames and ribs) and engineering advances on engine/airframe integration to deliver a lower noise footprint around airports.
Having completed wind-tunnel and hot-gas testing on scaled models, the industry now awaits a government response to its proposal to build the 125-foot-long vehicle able to accelerate to speeds of up to Mach 1.8.
If Kremlin funding materializes in a timely manner, construction and flight testing would take place between 2022 and 2026.

Supersonic airliner developer Boom has unveiled the refined configuration of its Mach 1.7 Overture passenger design and, at the same time, announced a partnership with Northrop Grumman to study military versions.
The significantly revised Overture design is tailored to meet Boom’s 4,250-nm range, high-speed mission requirement with 65-80 passenger, while simultaneously meeting stringent International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Chapter 14/FAA Stage 5 takeoff-and-landing noise limits.
Reminiscent of supersonic concepts studied by Boeing and McDonnell Douglas in the late 1980s under NASA’s High Speed Civil Transport project, the new design features a horizontal tail and four wing-mounted engines, replacing the trijet arrangement of the earlier concept.
By increasing the number of engines, Boom says the Overture will be capable of takeoff at derated thrust settings, helping reduce noise.
Mounted in individual nacelles, the nonafterburning engines are staggered along the trailing edge of a large delta wing, which replaces the slender ogive design of the previous Concorde-like iteration.
The new wing is gulled in profile and incorporates what appears to be a sharper trailing edge sweep angle inboard with a reduced sweep outboard.
The revised wing is designed to provide improved lateral stability as well as additional lift at subsonic conditions without compromising supersonic cruise performance - enabling transonic overland flight close to Mach 1 and long-range overwater flights at Mach 1.7.
The engine arrangement also reduces aerodynamic interference drag while providing space for high-lift trailing edge devices.
The aft location also complies with positioning rules for modern turbine rotor burst safety regulations and places the engines aft of the cabin pressure bulkhead.

Overture ...
Although in mid-2020 Boom announced that Rolls-Royce signed an “engagement agreement” to explore the technical requirements for powering the Overture, the UK engine maker told AIN that it reached a decision not to further participate in the program.
“We’ve completed our contract with Boom and delivered various engineering studies for their Overture supersonic program,” Rolls-Royce said in a statement.
“After careful consideration, Rolls-Royce has determined that the commercial aviation supersonic market is not currently a priority for us and, therefore, will not pursue further work on the program at this time. It has been a pleasure to work with the Boom team and we wish them every success in the future.”

Boom Supersonic announced that it has formed a team of engine designers, an additive manufacturer, and a turbine engine maintenance specialist to help develop the new Symphony engine that will power its Overture supersonic airliner.
However, the U.S. start-up, which to date has not been able to persuade any of the major aircraft engine makers to join its ambitious program, did not identify which company will manufacture the Symphony engine nor where it will be made.
The new engine will produce 35,000 pounds of takeoff thrust and features a twin-spool architecture with a single-stage fan and a passively cooled high-pressure turbine using traditional hot-section materials. The medium-bypass-ratio engine will not be equipped with an afterburner.
Boom is targeting the rollout of the Mach 1.7, four-engine Overture in 2024 at its Greensboro, North Carolina, factory followed by first flight in 2027 and type certification in 2029.
Certification of the Symphony engine will be under FAA and EASA Part 33 regulations.

NASA now eyes 2023 first flight for X-59, as supersonic projects face heat ...

By Jon Hemmerdinger (FlightGlobal) - 13 January 2023

NASA now expects its delayed X-59 Quiet Supersonic Technology (Quesst) demonstrator aircraft will make first flight in 2023 following completion of still-outstanding system evaluations.
The agency and partner Lockheed Martin confirm the 2023 first-flight target.
The programme is already significantly delayed, with NASA previously having aimed to have X-59 get airborne in autumn 2021.
Meanwhile, NASA faces criticism about the X-59 programme, which the agency has described as developing technology that could herald the resumption of supersonic civilian air travel.
One advocacy group is calling on NASA to review the programme on grounds that it conflicts with the US government’s goal of reducing aviation’s carbon footprint.
NASA tells FlightGlobal it is now “doing its due diligence, as good stewards of the environment, to assess impacts during the entire Quesst mission”.
“The agency is conducting an analysis to identify environmental effects from the research flights of the X-59 prior to the community overflight campaign,” it adds.
But first flight is still in NASA’s sights.
“We anticipate that the X-59’s rollout and first flight will occur this year,” NASA says.
“We expect to have a more specific date after NASA and Lockheed Martin complete a series of system checkouts and ground tests in the coming months.
“As is the case in any undertaking to transform aviation, the development of an all new, full-scale X-plane presents challenges we need to overcome,” NASA adds.
”Our focus now is ensuring that the X-59 will be able to safely and reliably complete the Quesst mission, including rigorous testing and preparation before kicking off the first flight-test series and subsequent community overflight testing.”
Lockheed confirms it is “on track for” first flight in 2023, citing supply chain and labour issues as holding up the complex development effort.
“It is a one of a kind X-plane,” Lockheed tells FlightGlobal.
“We are expecting 2023 to be the year.”
X-59 is central to a NASA’s Low-Boom Flight Demonstration Mission, through which the agency is working to perfect and test designs that can soften a supersonic aircraft’s sonic boom.
NASA has said the work “could make supersonic flight over land possible”.
US regulators have banned overland civilian supersonic flight for decades due to noise impacts.
As part of the Low-Boom project, NASA in 2018 awarded Lockheed a $247.5 million contract to design, develop, manufacture and flight test X-59. The aircraft’s features – including its long, slender fuselage and unique structural elements – will result in a sonic boom of 75 perceived dB on the ground, which is comparable to distant thunder or a car door shutting, NASA has said.
Concorde’s boom came in at 105 perceived dB.
Lockheed had been assembling the single-pilot X-59, powered by one 22,000lb-thrust (98kN) GE Aviation F414-GE-100, at its Skunk Works site in Palmdale, California.
The jet is to cruise at 55,000ft and fly at speeds to Mach 1.4.
Ultimately, NASA intends to use X-59 to perform “community flights” – those will involve flying the aircraft over the USA while measuring the loudness of its sonic boom and the boom’s perceptibility to people on the ground.
NASA intends to provide X-59 noise data to US regulators.
NASA launched the X-59 project as several start ups were involved in early stages of developing supersonic civilian aircraft.
One player, Aerion, which had been developing a supersonic business jet, folded in 2021.
Another, Boom Supersonic, continues developing a supersonic airliner but has been unable to secure a major aerospace company as an engine supplier.
In December, Boom said it will partner with three smaller companies – Florida Turbine Technologies, GE Additive and StandardAero – to develop a powerplant.
Major engine makers have expressed disinterest in supersonic, saying instead they are focused on improving fuel efficiency.
Critics of the supersonic development projects have noted that such aircraft will be much less efficient than subsonic aircraft.
NASA is also facing pushback.
In 12 January letter, nonprofit group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility urged NASA administrator Bill Nelson to review the X-59 programme in light of “climate implications”.
“Supersonic aircraft consume many times more fuel and produce many times the amount of pollution as current commercial flights,” says the letter.
Spending tax dollars to “enable higher-polluting aircraft” is “difficult to reconcile” with NASA broader goal of reducing emissions, it adds.
In response, NASA tells FlightGlobal it ”recognises that there are multiple challenges to making commercial supersonic flight a reality, including our long-term vision of addressing challenges such as emissions and fuel burn”.
However, the agency’s focus at this time is specifically on flights of the X-59 in support of the Quesst mission,” it adds.
A 2022 report from The International Council on Clean Transportation found that supersonic passenger aircraft would use 7-9 times more fuel per passenger, per kilometre, than subsonic jets burning fossil fuel.
