Confident Airbus Touts A400M .....

Marc V. Schanz (6/23/2015)

Airbus’ A400M military airlifter came out of the Paris Air Show with a head of steam, attracting prospective customers and putting on an acrobatic flying display roughly a month after a fatal A400M crash in Seville, Spain, grounded the fleet.

http://militaryaircraft-airbusds.com/Pr ... ille-.aspx

Several European countries already buy the aircraft, and despite developmental troubles, Christian Scherer, Airbus’ executive vice president for defense and space marketing and sales, said he is feeling confident about the world market, even the US market.
“In terms of product positioning, it’s a salesman’s dream,” Scherer told Air Force Magazine earlier this month at the air show in Le Bourget, France.
With a dozen airframes delivered, the A400M today “does the job of two and a half C-130s, and two-thirds of a C-17, plus things a C-17 can’t do,” he said.
It’s a capability that “nobody else has,” he added.
The French military pressed the A400M into service during operations in Mali in January 2015, marking the type’s combat debut.
There are developmental improvements remaining, said Scherer, such as maturing the airplane’s self-protection systems and air-to-air refueling capabilities.
“For new customers, that won’t be an issue [by 2018],” he said.
On June 16, the Royal Air Force lifted flight restrictions on its A400Ms.

http://www.raf.mod.uk/news/archive/raf- ... g-16062015

The Spanish government followed two days later, clearing the way for Airbus’ deliveries to resume.

Airbus Eyes Opening For A400M in US Market .....

Marc V. Schanz (6/23/2015)

William LaPlante, the Air Force’s acquisition executive, did not slam the door on the potential entry of the Airbus A400M airlifter into the US market.

http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... lante.aspx

“In general, when we talk with Airbus, we think, the more the merrier… in terms of getting ... industry thinking about our missions,” said LaPlante last week during a brief meeting with reporters at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, France.
The Air Force has sought out Airbus’ attendance at CEO roundtables to discuss technology solutions, he said.
Airbus’ Executive Vice President for Defense and Space Marketing and Sales Christian Scherer told Air Force Magazine at the air show that the company is having “dialogue” with the Pentagon.
Airbus is working to “educate” US officials on the A400M’s capabilities and trying to get the aircraft plugged into wargaming scenarios, he said.
“We are at a point in time where we believe we have such a good story, we are working ... to see the US run some scenarios with it,” said Scherer.
Interoperability should not be a concern, as several NATO allies operate the airlifter, he said.

The acceptance of the latest French air force aircraft happened one day after Airbus had received approval from Spain’s DGAM authority to resume production deliveries of the “Atlas”.
That move represented the “lifting of all remaining flight restrictions on new production aircraft”, the company says.
Another A400M, which had also been poised for delivery prior to the crash, will be delivered “in a matter of days”, Airbus says, “with a number of others to follow in the coming weeks”.
All of these examples are awaiting acceptance by the UK Royal Air Force.

However the company has for now dropped plans to promote the A400M as capable of refuelling helicopters in-flight, with head of flight tests and operations Eric Isorce describing this as “nearly impossible”, due to the vortex generated from the transport’s wing.

Refueling helicopters will be “very difficult to achieve,” but Airbus has not abandoned the capability, Alonso said. An option to be explored is to use a 120- to 150-foot hose, compared to the present 90-foot hose, to allow helicopters to fly a safe distance as they refuel.

Costo elevato, necessità urgenti e implicazioni politico-industriali .....
US officers are due to brief French military and procurement staff early next week, following the Pentagon’s publishing of a $650 million price tag for four C-130J airlifters offered to France, French and US defense sources said.
That estimate, announced on Tuesday by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, far exceeds the €330 million (US $354 million) France has set aside, sparking concern within the French armed forces keen to acquire the Hercules aircraft.

Consegni in ritardo ?
E allora ..... paga la penale !
European aircraft manufacturer Airbus will have to pay substantial compensation to the German Ministry of Defense due to the late delivery of its A400M transport aircraft and a capability level that falls short of the contracted agreement.
According to sources familiar with the subject, both parties agreed that the German MoD will receive €13 million (US $13.9 million) from Airbus for missing the delivery schedule.
