Airbus is seeing better than expected fuel-burn savings during initial flight trials of its A320 winglet upgrade.

The lift devices, which Airbus calls Sharklets, are supposed to replace wing-tip fences on A320s starting this year and on all NEO narrowbodies when the re-engined aircraft enter service starting in 2015.

Flight testing of a modified A320 (MSN1) began in late 2011 with the first A320 equipped with the devices as a forward fit (MSN5098) completing its first flight in April.

The certification phase of the program is expected to total 600 hours

Early indications are the fuel-burn savings may exceed estimates, says Fernando Alonso, senior VP for flight and integration tests at Airbus. The aircraft maker was hoping to see an improvement in fuel burn of up to 3.5% on long flights.

Low-speed performance of the A320 is not degraded by the addition of the winglets and, according to Alonso, handling standards—which can be affected by these wing tips—are being maintained.

So far only A320s are flying within the winglets, although Airbus intends on introducing the modification on its entire single-aisle product range.

Airbus is closer to defining a formal modification programme to retrofit its "sharklet" wing-tips on baseline A320s, but is still prioritising the forward-fit production process. The airframer has already rolled out the first example of an A320 with wings built to the sharklet-compatible standard.

Speaking at an event in Toulouse at the end of May, Airbus executive vice-president for programmes Tom Williams said the airframer intends to construct 100 aircraft this year with the reinforced wing.

This reinforcement provides the platform enabling sharklets to be fitted on the production line or added later - a process which will involve simply plugging in the modified wing-tip and updating flight-control software during an overnight hangar visit.

Airbus

Some 100 aircraft this year will be produced with stronger wings

Williams says a retrofit programme for older A320s will require "peeling back" the outer part of the wing skin and adding reinforcement to the stringer structures, while minimising torsion and any effects on lateral trim. "[Retrofit] will require a more extensive process of opening the wing and inserting structural reinforcement, but we want complete commonality with the forward-fit sharklet," he states. Although changes to production aircraft include localised centre wing box reinforcements, Williams believes retrofit would be "manageable" in this regard.

He says Airbus has received "quite a lot of interest" in a retrofit from airlines, but stresses that the airframer wants to ensure the forward-fit effort is "sorted out" - not least because the forward-fit programme is a step towards standardising the sharklet on the A320neo. This will give the manufacturer a "breathing space", Williams says. But he also states that Airbus wants to make sure it can obtain enough sharklets to meet demand.

Korean Air's aerospace manufacturing division is the sole supplier of the modified wing-tips and Williams says Airbus is looking at a potential requirement of 90 sets per month. The sharklets will be supplied to the A320 final assembly lines in Toulouse, Hamburg and Tianjin, China.

Each sharklet is about 2.4m (7.8ft) tall and includes new LED navigation and strobe lighting as well as wing-load reduction through load-alleviation functions of the flight-control system.

Although the wing-span increases by 1.7m to 35.8m, this does not change the type's airport classification. Airbus is aiming for certification of the sharklet-equipped A320 with CFM International CFM56 engines by the end of this year.

Test flights with the first production aircraft - a CFM56-powered example - will take about nine or 10 months, and Airbus intends to secure approval for all four A320 family members, with their various engine and flight-management system combinations.

Non sapevo bene dove postarla, la metto qua perché penso che, se il progetto si concretizzerà, sarà comunque un 321NEO.... ;)
Airbus is studying whether it should offer a 236-seat version of the Airbus A321, industry sources tell Aviation Week. The high-density configuration would be possible using the latest slim seats with the literature bag above, rather than below, the seatback table. Seats also would have to be placed in a 28-in. pitch configuration throughout the cabin. No fuselage stretch or other modifications, such as additional emergency exits, would be needed.

Airbus says it has “no firm plans” to raise A321 capacity further.

According to the manufacturer, the aircraft currently can be operated in a 220-seat configuration at maximum capacity. By comparison, Boeing’s 737-900 can accommodate up to 215 passengers in a single-class layout.

A 236-seat aircraft would be much larger than models typically operated by low-cost carriers. In the mainline scheduled role, the aircraft would hit operational issues, such as long boarding times through a single boarding bridge that would not enable quick turnarounds. But the aircraft could be of interest to charter and scheduled airlines looking for a Boeing 757 replacement, provided boarding and debarking can occur through two doors. Also, with the introduction of the A321NEO, the A321’s range will increase from the current nominal 3,200 nm with maximum passenger load to 3,700 nm, making longer sectors from Central Europe to the Canary Islands or similar missions more feasible.

Airbus is examining a possible A321 fuselage modification which would aim to increase passenger capacity of the A321neo. The modification would potentially take the A321neo to 235 seats.
...
A321s have eight exits, four forward of the wing and four aft. The modification would involve adding another pair of doors, in the form of an overwing exit, and moving the position of the third pair.
The exit change could also require a new escape slide.

Prima accensione per il nuovo motore PW destinato al NEO
A full moon hung over Pratt & Whitney's test site the night its Airbus A320NEO engine ran for the first time. Whether this was a good omen or not, the company knows only a successful test effort will prove if its pivotal gamble on geared turbofan technology was correct.

Pratt began its march back into the single-aisle mainstream at 11 p.m. on Nov. 28, when the first PW1100G NEO engine fired into life on the company's West Palm Beach, Fla., test stand. “The first time we put power to the igniter it lit,” says the engine maker's Next-Generation product family Vice President Bob Saia. Since then, the engine has been taken through a 'break-in' cycle from idle to full thrust, ensuring the mechanical integrity at various power levels before clearing the PW1100G for the remainder of the forthcoming test effort.

Although it is too soon to know whether the engine is on track to meet critical fuel-burn targets, the overall performance from a temperature and speed perspective “is right on pre-test predictions,” says Saia. “We haven't yet got a true calibration in terms of fuel efficiency,” he adds. Mechanically, the engine has completed the break-in cycle testing with “no anomalies. We're really pleased with what we got.”
