Emirates Joins British Airways Prodding Boeing on New 777
By Andrea Rothman - Apr 26, 2012 1:03 AM bloomberg.com

QUEUEQ..Emirates Airline and British Airways Plc (IAG), two of the biggest buyers for Boeing Co.’s (BA) 777, are urging the planemaker to decide soon on a successor to the top- selling wide-body model so it’s ready for service before 2020.

“We want it done now so they have the plane in 2019,” Emirates President Tim Clark said in an interview at an industry conference in Barcelona. British Airways Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh gave the same timeline yesterday as well.

Boeing will brief its board by year-end or early 2013 on potential plans to offer an upgrade to the current version, the company’s commercial airplanes chief, Jim Albaugh, said last month. He said the Chicago-based planemaker expected the new plane to be in service “towards the end of the decade.”

Emirates, the largest customer for the 777, and British Airways, the fifth-biggest, are pushing for a follow-on model to the 777-300 by decade’s end so they can move quickly to replace some of their older planes. Airbus SAS (EAD) is promoting the roomiest version of its A350 as a challenger to the twin-engine 777.

The 777, Boeing’s most-profitable commercial jet, lists for $298.3 million for the 777-300 model, which like other airliners is typically sold at a discount. A Boeing spokesman, Marc Birtel, said yesterday that there had been nothing to contradict the time frame given by Albaugh.

“I think 2019 at the latest would be my view,” Walsh said in an interview in Barcelona. “Everyone would like to have visibility around the plane and see it enter service as soon as possible.”

Fleet Replacement
British Airways, a unit of International Consolidated Airlines Group SA, intends to replace 52 Boeing 747 jumbo jets. It is currently evaluating the purchase of a 777 successor, the 787-10 Dreamliner, or possibly A350-1000s, the biggest variant of the Airbus plane.

While some of the four-engine 747s can still operate until as late as 2018 or 2019, rising fuel prices heighten the need for a more fuel-efficient replacement, said Walsh, who is CEO of London-based British Airways and IAG. Air France is the second- biggest 777 operator.

Emirates’s Clark said he has been talking to Boeing for more than two years about a new 777, and that in recent months he has urged Boeing to canvass other potential buyers to encourage a quicker decision. Dubai-based Emirates began taking its first 777s in 1995 and has ordered 174.

“Boeing had a hugely enthusiastic response when they spoke to all operators of the 777, so in terms of the business case that has to go before the board, I believe they’ve got what they need,” Clark said. He remained concerned that Boeing’s struggles with the 787 Dreamliner, which was more than three years late entering service, would stall a 777 decision.

“They screwed up badly on the non-recurring costs on the 787,” Clark said.

Boeing’s Birtel said the 777’s “strong market position” gives the planemaker time to make the right decisions on an upgrade.

“Those decisions are aligned with the right technologies and the right timing for our customers, and we are working details and studies now,” Birtel said yesterday in an e-mail.

Micro-contaminazioni dell'aria spillata dai motori? Qualcuno ne sa nulla?

Emirates spinge per una nuova versione del 777:
Emirates Airline wants Boeing to make a quick decision on the next-generation Boeing 777, with President Tim Clark claiming that the airframer could “sell immediately 150-200” of them.

Clark, speaking to Aviation Week on the sidelines of the International Air Transport Association’s annual general meeting this week in Beijing, says the initial client base also could include Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Japan Airlines, British Airways and American Airlines.
Emirates alone has 174 Boeing 777-300ERs in its fleet or on order and will start to retire them in 2017.

Boeing has not committed to a new-generation 777 launch, and Air Lease Corp.’s CEO Steve Udvar-Hazy says he does not expect the manufacturer will “rush with the 777,” maybe leaving the launch decision until a year from now, so it can focus on launching the 787-10, which he sees as an “easier step technologically.”

But Emirates has other priorities. Clark says Boeing would make a mistake if it waited until the performance of the competing A350-1000 becomes clear. “If you think you don’t have to move because the -1000 is in trouble, think again,” he says, adding that “if you believe in your product and your client base is telling you the same, why wouldn’t you get on with the job and bag it?”

Udvar-Hazy tells Aviation Week that rather than a major overhaul of the 777, he would prefer the 777X program to add new engines, a new wing (although not an all-composite one) and a small stretch of around four frames.

ALC’s founder also says Boeing should not “become hostage” of a small number of airlines that want maximum range capabilities of the new aircraft that most other operators do not need. In his view, the solution to accommodate differing interests would be to offer one ultra-long-range version and a stretch that would offer a similar range as today’s 777-300ER.

British Airways may take more 777-300ERs as it ponders ‘big-twin’ order

Concerns over the robustness of delivery schedules for potential new large twinjet acquisitions could prompt British Airways to opt for additional Boeing 777-300ERs as an interim solution.

The UK carrier is incorporating the second phase of its widebody fleet replacement order into a joint deal with sister airline Iberia (both are owned by International Airlines Group), and is evaluating new large widebodies including the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing's proposed upgraded 777X.

"We've got a large-aircraft [acquisition] programme and so has Iberia, so we'll get a better buying capability by combining the two," said British Airways' chief executive Keith Williams, in an interview with Flightglobal's Airline Business magazine.

Dubbed the "big-twin" deal, Williams adds that the order is being negotiated at "IAG level with input from BA".

The first of 12 A380s and 24 787s BA ordered as the first part of its widebody renewal programme will arrive in the first half of next year - later than scheduled. But Williams says that the delays did not create much of problem for BA, because it has had the flexibility to retain some of the 747-400s earmarked for replacement for longer than planned to cover for the delays.

"But when we get into the big-twin programme, our 747s will be that little bit older so we won't have the same flexibility as we had this time round, so we'd like some certainty on the delivery schedule."

The two types under evaluation include the Airbus A350 and Boeing's proposed enhanced 777X derivatives. Although delivery of the A350-1000 is slated for 2017, there is speculation this could slip again and the schedule for the upgraded 777 is unclear.

In the interim, BA has taken six of eight 777-300ERs it has on order, which are "partly a hedge on late deliveries", and Williams says that one option could be to take more. "The problem is, is the next generation going to be so much more fuel efficient than 777-300ERs to make it worth waiting for? But I'm conscious of the fact that if you wait for something and it never turns up eventually you don't have any aircraft."

Meanwhile BA is also turning its attention to the replacement of the ageing 737-400 fleet that serve its short-haul network from London Gatwick. But Williams says that he must be sure of a sound business case for Gatwick's short-haul operations. "I need to justify that [fleet replacement] to IAG with a plan that is built around the ability to make a return," he says.

Emirates to buy 100 777s if Boeing builds new model
da arabianbusiness.com

Emirates, the world's largest airline by international passenger traffic, is likely to order 100 planes or more from Boeing if the plane manufacturer upgrades the design of the wide-body 777 with a newer model, the Dubai-based carrier's president Tim Clark said.

"If Boeing produced the airplane that we want I can see easily that figure, bearing in mind that we've ordered 175 of them," Clark said in an interview with Arabian Business. "If it's as good as we hope it'll be, it's a natural thing to say 'yes we would probably roll over what we have to what they're offering with the new aircraft'."

If Chicago-based Boeing was to produce the next generation of the long-haul 777-300ER (Extended Range), its most profitable aircraft to date, an order of 100 jets from Emirates would probably cost more than US$36bn considering the current list price for the 777-300ER.

That would be Boeing’s largest single order after Emirates ordered 50 of the company’s 777-300ERs in November last year.

Emirates is the largest customer of the 777-300ER with 151 in its fleet or on order, and will begin retiring them in 2017. That is in addition to other models in its fleet like the 777-200, 777-300 and the 777-200LR.

"We have been trying to get Boeing to build the 777-9x and 8x and we are working closely with them to try and persuade them that it's a good idea to build it. We are not there yet," Clark said. "I guess if they had been there we would have done orders by now but they're not. The moment you read that Boeing are launching the new 777 you will probably find that Emirates is fairly close behind."

"Our airplanes start retiring in 2017, the ERs that we have today... they will all have to go and be replaced at some point, so there is a kind of a natural rollover in terms of what we do," Clark said. "Unless Airbus have a 350 programme - but the 350-1000 isn't of the size of the 777ER today or the new 777. So it's not something that is that attractive to us at the moment unless they change it."

The 300ER competes with Airbus SAS' A340-600HGW and the upcoming A350-1000, whose design Clark is unhappy with. Emirates has 70 A350s on order, 20 of which are A350-1000. In the last 12 months, Abu Dhabi-owned Etihad Airways cancelled orders for 13 A350-1000s.

"Emirates’ experience with aircraft in this class has led it to prefer Boeing,” said Richard Aboulafia, vice president of Fairfax, Virginia-based Teal Group, an aviation consulting firm. "The A340 was a disaster, and the A380 is only useful as a way of maximising scarce slots. The 777 has been a very big success for Emirates, and they’ve become the biggest customer. In other words, even though the A350-1000 looks promising, it’s very much in Emirates’ interest to motivate Boeing with the prospect of large numbers.”

Emirates uses the versatile 777-300ER to fly long haul flights to South America, the US, Asia and Australia.

Boeing's reluctance or delay to go forward with the 777-8x and 777-9x stems from a fear that the new models may stunt demand for the 747-8, analysts say. If the larger 777 comes online Emirates would most likely be its launch customer. The Dubai-based carrier's fleet strategy would also change.

"If that's good we may start offloading the later aircraft and flog them on the secondary air market to grab the new one because it has all the fuel efficiencies that we want. But we're not there yet," Clark said. "We've been working with them for a couple of years now and it's a little bit slow, they've got a lot of work to do. They still have got to put the 787 programme to bed."

China Airlines to order six Boeing 777-300ERs

China Airlines has received approval from its board to place an order for six Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

The announcement was made on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, but details were scant.

A spokeswoman contacted said the board's decision was made on 6 December and that the Taiwanese airline will now work with Boeing on the formal order. She declined to say when the aircraft will be scheduled for delivery.

Last month, China Airlines told Flightglobal that it was assessing the Airbus A350-1000 and the 777-300ER to replace some of its aging and fuel-hungry Boeing 747-400s.

The SkyTeam alliance member operates a fleet of 13 747-400s and another 55 Airbus A330s, A340s and Boeing 737s.

It also has orders for 14 A350-900s, which are due to be delivered from 2016 and options for another six more. The airline had said that it could convert some of these to the -1000 variant, while the -900 variants will be used to replace its A340s and grow capacity.

China Airlines expects to receive one more A330-300 in 2013 and 2014 respectively, for a total of 24 of the type. It will also receive three 737-800s in 2013 and three more in 2014, for a total of 16 of the narrowbody aircraft.
