NMA (New Midsize Airplane) ..... la rivelazione di Boeing a Le Bourget .....
Boeing partially unveiled a New Midsize Airplane (NMA) concept with a 787-like composite wing and fuselage, a likely narrower wingspan than the Dreamliner and, for the first time, what the company calls a "hybrid cross-section".
After achieving an authority-to-offer decision earlier this year, Boeing is still perhaps months or a year away from a launch decision for an aircraft sized to carry 200-270 passengers and fly 5,000nm.
Boeing has created a programme office to support the New Mid-market Airplane, and appointed a top 787 executive to lead the effort toward a future launch decision by the company’s board of directors.
The appointment of former 787 vice-president and general manager Mark Jenks to lead the NMA office signals that Boeing’s is closer to launching the new family of composite aircraft aimed at a market segment between the 737 Max 10 and 787-8.
IAG chief executive Willie Walsh is lukewarm to the prospect of Boeing’s proposed all-new middle-of-the-market aircraft, which he believes is coming late given the availability of Airbus’s A321LR variant of the A320neo family.
Speaking at the recent World Routes in Barcelona, Walsh praised the A321LR’s performance, explaining how Aer Lingus will use the extended range version of the re-engined twinjet to launch single-aisle transatlantic services in 2019.
He adds that he sees a wider role for the A321LR at other airlines within IAG.
Boeing will not be rushing into a decision on whether to launch a New Mid-market Airplane (NMA), despite seeing a clear opportunity for such a product, the head of its commercial unit tells FlightGlobal.
"A decision to launch a new airplane is one that requires a ton of rigour on: is it the right market, is it the right airplane, and does it have the right business plan?" says Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief executive Kevin McAllister.
Momentum appears to be gathering around Boeing's proposed New Mid-market Airplane (NMA) – already being referred to by some as the 797.
Reports indicate a potential launch this year or in early 2019, although this is perhaps more likely to refer to an authority to offer (ATO), rather than the full industrial launch.
Boeing has said it is looking at a small twin-aisle in two sizes, with 220-270 seats and a range of up to 5,000nm (9,260km).
It sees a global market for about 4,000 aircraft in the NMA class.

NMA ... “We are going to start with a clean sheet of paper, again.”
Boeing is taking a fresh look at the design of its so-called New Mid-market Airplane due to changes in the global aviation market and heightened focus on pilot-aircraft interactions.
“We are going to take, probably, a different approach,” Boeing chief executive David Calhoun says on 22 January in response to questions about the NMA.
“We are going to start with a clean sheet of paper, again.”
Boeing is assessing which segment of the commercial aircraft market it should actually address with its next aircraft development programme, suggesting options other than its proposed New Mid-market Airplane (NMA) may be on the table.
Speaking during Boeing’s 2019 earnings call on 29 January, chief executive David Calhoun also insists the company will not design its next aircraft purely as a response to the hugely-popular Airbus A321neo.
“We have asked the team to step back and reassess our commercial product development strategy to determine what family of airplanes will be needed in the future,” Calhoun says.
In considering its options for a New Mid-market Aircraft (NMA), Boeing could ponder using an early design of a bestselling twin-aisle aircraft which was shelved a decade ago, in an effort to keep development costs low and execute on an accelerated timeline, one analyst says.
As the company reevaluates its plans around building an NMA, Addison Schonland, founder and chief executive of AirInsight Research, says the answer for the Chicago-based planemaker could be relatively simple.
“The 787-3 died a miserable death,” says Schonland at the Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance meeting in Lynnwood, Washington on 6 February.
“What would happen if maybe the solution for Boeing and NMA is staring them in the face.”
Riesumo questo topic. Cos'è successo in 11 mesi?
