Top Swedish defense officials have thrown their weight behind Saab’s bid for the multibillion-dollar HX fighter competition in Finland, arguing the Gripen aircraft would enable unprecedented cooperation between the two countries in thwarting a hypothetical attack by Russia.
The Finnish race is one of two big-ticket aircraft competitions in Europe — Switzerland being the other — where major vendors from both sides of the Atlantic are jockeying for position.
Finland has requested final offers by the end of April from Airbus for the Eurofighter; Dassault for the Rafale; Boeing for the Super Hornet; Lockheed Martin for the F-35; and Saab for the Gripen E/F.

M-346 ... importante ordine dalla Nigeria ...
Leonardo will supply 24 Leonardo M346 Master jet training aircraft to the Nigerian Air Force.
The first six aircraft are already expected to be delivered this year.
According to the information, the new aircraft are reported to replace the Alpha Jets, of which thirteen are still active according to the Scramble database.
The exact version of the M346 Master has not been revealed, but it might be possible that Nigeria ordered the dual role M346FA Fighter Attack version.

Finnish officials have received final offers from five vendors for the multibillion-dollar HX fighter jet competition, kicking off an evaluation phase slated to run throughout 2021.
With a tender ceiling of €9 billion (U.S. $11 billion), the competition is one of the biggest air-armament acquisitions in Europe.
It aims to find a replacement for the Nordic country’s fleet of F-18 Hornets.
The usual suspects of Western suppliers responded by the April 30 deadline: Saab with its Gripen; Dassault with the Rafale; Lockheed Martin with its F-35; Boeing’s F-18 Super Hornet’ and the Eurofighter, made by a consortium of Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo.

AW149 ... Leonardo lo propone al Regno Unito ...
Leonardo Helicopters has underscored the credentials of its 8.6t AW149 super-medium-twin as a replacement for the UK Royal Air Force’s Puma HC2 transports, particularly compared with rival “paper aircraft”.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) in a March planning document revealed that it intends to retire the RAF’s 23 remaining Pumas by the middle of this decade, replacing them with what it calls the New Medium Helicopter (NMH).
However, also included within the scope of the NMH is the replacement of three other niche fleets: army-operated Bell 212 and 412 transports, and Aerospatiale-built AS365 Dauphins which are used to support special forces personnel.
No details of the MoD’s requirements have so far emerged ...

On June 24 the U.S. State Department approved the potential sale of 12 F-16 Block 70/72 fighters to the Philippines, following a request from the government in Manila as its searches for a Multi-Role Fighter (MRF) to defend the nation's airspace and surrounding seas.
However, a day later the Philippine defense secretary, Delfin Lorenzano, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that the F-16 package was too expensive, and that the Philippine Air Force (PAF) was examining other options.
The front-runners for the MRF requirement are the F-16 and Sweden's Saab Gripen.
Valued at an estimated $2.43 billion, the potential sale covers 10 single-seat F-16Cs and two F-16D two-seaters, along with related equipment, spares, and training.

Russia is still intent on selling 11 Sukhoi Su-35 fighters to Indonesia, despite pressure on Jakarta to abandon the long-troubled sale.
Speaking at the MAKS air show outside Moscow, Valeria Reshetnikova of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation said Moscow is still ready to execute the deal, which has been held up for several years.
“From the very beginning, the project on supplying 11 multirole Su-35 fighters to Jakarta has attracted the world community’s close attention,” says Reshetnikova, quoted by Russia’s state news agency Tass.
“It’s no surprise that after signing [the deal], the Indonesian side has come up against extensive pressure from representatives of certain states. At all possible levels, Jakarta was ‘strongly recommended’ to abandon the project. However, we confidently assert that the Russian side is intent on fulfilling this contract.”

With production coming to an end in four years, the Navy is working out a plan to sustain the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye command-and-control aircraft for at least another 30.
Upgrades include cockpit avionics and enhancements to mission systems, communication capabilities and cybersecurity to keep the “eyes of the fleet” open well into 2040 beyond, according to Capt. Pete Arrobio, who heads the Airborne Command and Control Systems Program Office at NAVAIR PMA-231.
The E-2D Hawkeye carrier-based, tactical battle-management, airborne early warning and command-and-control aircraft, is the more modern version of the Northrop Grumman-built E-2C.

Turkmenistan ... consegnati due M-346FA ...
Turkmenistan has emerged as the launch customer for the light attack version of Leonardo’s M-346 jet trainer after the country’s president took a flight in one of the aircraft shortly after delivery. [
Footage released by state news agency of Turkmenistan shows President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov boarding, taking off and flying on one of two M-346FA delivered to the country.
The flight reportedly took place on Aug. 1.
The aircraft are based at an airfield in the westernmost Balkan region of the Central Asian country.
Turkmenistan is one of several countries to which the M-346 was flown and demonstrated in recent years. Leonardo revealed in 2020 that it had secured an undisclosed launch customer for six examples of the fighter attack version of the jet trainer.

Kazakhstan ... ordinati due A400M ...
Airbus Defence and Space announced on September 1 that it has received an order from the Republic of Kazakhstan for two A400M airlifters.
The order brings the number of A400M customers to nine.
The first aircraft is scheduled to be handed over in 2024.
To support the aircraft, Airbus will deliver a complete training and maintenance support package.
A memorandum of understanding has been signed to collaborate on maintenance and overhaul services and marks the first step in the creation of a local maintenance center for the C295 medium airlifter.
The Kazakh order brings the number of A400Ms sold to 176, a figure that Michael Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus D&S, “expects to increase in the near future.”
In May this year, Airbus delivered the 100th A400M — the 10th aircraft for the Spanish air force — and the global fleet has passed 100,000 hours in operation.
The most recent nation to begin receiving aircraft was Belgium, for which the first was delivered in December 2020.
This aircraft was preceded by Luxembourg's sole A400M, which operates in a joint squadron with the Belgians at Brussels-Melsbroek.

Leonardo has not commented, but Nigeria would be the second customer for the light attack variant after Turkmenistan.

Indonesia ... confermato l'acquisto di alcuni C-130J ...
A visit to Lockheed Martin’s plant in Marietta, Georgia, by Indonesia’s Air Force Chief of Staff, Air Chief Marshal Fadjar Prasetyo, on September 7 resulted in confirmation that the country's air force has ordered the C-130J Super Hercules, the latest version of the perennial transport.
The number of aircraft now on order has not been formally revealed but is believed to be five.
As the aircraft were ordered as a direct commercial sale, the purchase had previously gone unpublicized.
The Indonesian air force (TNI-AU) is understood to have selected the stretched C-130J-30 in 2018, and it is thought to have placed an order in the following year.
During the air chief’s visit to Marietta, he was photographed alongside a flight deck section of the first C-130J-30 for the TNI-AU, indicating that the initial aircraft could be handed over sometime next year, although no delivery schedule has been announced.

KAI sta negoziando ...
South Korea’s sole aircraft manufacturer, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is negotiating with the Slovakian Government for the sale of ten KAI FA-50 fighter/attack aircraft to the Vzdušné sily Ozbrojených sil Slovenskej Republiky (SAF, Slovak Air Force).
A possible contract is valued at USD 500 million.
The SAF wants to replace its ageing fleet of L-39 Albatros trainer aircraft. Currently, the air force operates six L-39 trainers, two L-39ZAM and four L-39CM.

F-35 ... la Spagna smentisce ...
Spain has no interest in the American F-35 fighter jet and is solely committed to the Future Combat Air System that it is pursuing with France and Germany, a defense spokeswoman told Reuters (*).
The statement comes after Spanish officials at a defense exhibition in Madrid last week said the Lockheed Martin-made plane was a least a theoretical contender for the Spanish Navy and, if the sea service were to select it, the Air Force.

F-35 ... la Spagna smentisce ... ma Lockheed Martin ribadisce ...
A Lockheed Martin executive says discussions continue with the Spanish government about a potential future order of F-35Bs and F-35As despite a firm denial by Madrid.
“They have an aircraft carrier, and they’re going to have to replace the Harrier, so our approach into Spain is really through that,” Lockheed Executive Vice President Greg Ulmer told ShowNews on Nov.16 at the Dubai Airshow.
“Obviously, we see the [F-35] B-model to be that,” Ulmer added, referring to the short-takeoff and vertical-landing variant.
“We’re also talking to them about potentially A-models as well.”
