Misterioso attacco aereo vicino al confine fra Irak e Siria ...
US denies involvement while Jerusalem remains mum as per its policy.
Iranian state TV claims trucks were carrying fuel to Lebanon, but others claim weapons were also being shipped ...
Israel was accused Wednesday of carrying out a series of overnight airstrikes on a convoy near the Syria-Iraq border that left at least 10 people dead, including a number of Iranian fighters.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the strikes on a series of trucks as they crossed into Syria from Iraq at the al-Qaim crossing shortly before midnight Tuesday.
The trucks were reportedly carrying fuel and possibly weapons from Iran to Lebanon.

Da Flight International ...
Russian airpower could regain initiative in Ukraine: think tank ...

By Greg Waldron - 16 November 2022

A think tank warns that Russian airpower could regain the initiative in Ukrainian skies if Kyiv is not urgently supported with air defence systems and western fighter aircraft.
A misperception about Russia’s war in Ukraine is that the Russian Aerospace Forces have had a limited role thus far, according to a recent report (*) by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
It observes that Russian airpower was initially able to suppress Ukrainian air defences in the days following the war’s start on 24 February, and that Ukrainian fighter aircraft took “serious casualties”.
The pictured changed after Ukrainian surface-to-air missile (SAM) capabilities found their footing, and Russian Sukhoi Su-25 and Su-34 attack aircraft are now wary of crossing the front lines to attack Ukrainian targets.
Ukrainian MANPADS (man portable air defence systems) further complicate the air picture for Russian fixed-wing aircraft and attack helicopters.
Nonetheless, Russian fighters on combat air patrols near the front lines have proven highly effective at very long ranges, specifically the Su-35S equipped with R-77-1 air-to-air missiles, and the RAC MiG-31 interceptor with R-37 missiles.
These force Ukrainian aircraft to operate at very low altitudes, reducing their effectiveness.
The report, authored by Justin Bronk, Nick Reynolds, and Jack Watling, observes that Russian helicopters tend to approach fixed targets at altitudes below 200ft, before pitching up and firing unguided rockets on a ballistic trajectory.
It notes that the Kamov Ka-52 has proven particularly vulnerable to Ukrainian forces.
“The Russian attack helicopter fleet was initially used to conduct aggressive hunter killer sorties behind Ukrainian frontlines, with penetration depths of up to 50km relatively common,” says the report.
“However, losses to MANPADS were heavy and so Russian tactics shifted during March, with penetrating sorties becoming less and less common; they were replaced by rocket ‘lofting’ attacks from a safe distance. Since April, Russian attack helicopters have been used extremely cautiously, with a heavy reliance on standoff rocket attacks rendering them little more than flying rocket artillery assets.”
In recent months Russia’s air war has gained traction with the arrival of cheap Shahed-136 loitering munitions from Iran, which Moscow uses in conjunction with cruise missiles to attack Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.
While Shahed-136s are frequently shot down, the large numbers deployed absorb valuable Ukrainian air defence resources.
“In the short term, Ukraine also needs large numbers of additional MANPADS and radar guided anti-aircraft guns, such as the [German-supplied] Gepard, to sustain and increase its ability to intercept the Shahed-136s and protect its remaining power infrastructure and repairs to damaged facilities,” says RUSI.
Further, Kyiv requires western fighter aircraft. RUSI specifically names the Saab Gripen C/D as well suited for operating in austere conditions.
“The West must avoid complacency about the need to urgently bolster Ukrainian air defence capacity,” says RUSI.
“It is purely thanks to its failure to destroy Ukraine’s mobile SAM systems that Russia remains unable to effectively employ the potentially heavy and efficient aerial firepower of its fixed-wing bomber and multi-role fighter fleets to bombard Ukrainian strategic targets and frontline positions from medium altitude, as it did in Syria.”

"AUKUS" ... un recente commento di Noah C. Mayhew nel "Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists" ...
Since the September 2021 announcement of the Australia-United Kingdom-United States (AUKUS) partnership entailing a “trilateral effort of 18 months to seek an optimal pathway” to help Australia acquire nuclear-powered submarines, experts opposed to such acquisition have made grave predictions about it.
When I first heard the announcement, I was unconcerned.
While nuclear-powered submarines in a non-nuclear weapon state’s possession would be unprecedented, safeguards - technical measures implemented by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - are designed to ensure that sensitive nuclear technology is not diverted toward the manufacture of nuclear weapons.
As these measures are in place for Australia, I saw no need for concern.
What has raised concern is the alarm over AUKUS from a small but vocal minority of countries, clearly driven by geopolitics rather than safeguards.
This issue played out in dramatic fashion in September at the IAEA’s annual General Conference in Vienna.
On the one hand, in his opening remarks Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said unequivocally that the drafters of the document on which the vast majority of safeguards agreements are based (an information circular known as INFCIRC/153) (*) recognized that military naval nuclear propulsion was a permitted activity.
On the other hand, whether to address AUKUS in a conference resolution (and if so, how) was the subject of intense debate during conference deliberations.
The Chinese delegation attempted not only to push a separate resolution on AUKUS and its implications for IAEA safeguards, but also to insist on AUKUS-related language in other conference resolutions - including resolutions on the IAEA’s safeguards system, the application of safeguards in North Korea, and even the IAEA’s budget.
Ultimately, China dropped its resolution when it failed to win support beyond a few other IAEA member states.

La Polonia accetta ...
Poland’s Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak has announced that, in the aftermath of last week’s fatal missile strike on Polish soil, he has “received with satisfaction” the offer of his German counterpart, Christine Lambrecht, who said Germany could deploy some of its Patriot launchers to protect its neighbor’s skies.
“I will propose to deploy this system close to the border with Ukraine,” Błaszczak said in a Nov. 21 tweet ahead of his scheduled phone talk with Lambrecht.
Following the conversation, Błaszczak tweeted that “the German Defence Minister has confirmed her willingness to place Patriot launchers near the border” with Ukraine, and that the number of launchers, their variant, and time of delivery, among others, were to be further discussed by both allies.

Rapporto al Congresso sul programma nucleare dell'Iran ...

Immagine
Several U.N. Security Council resolutions adopted between 2006 and 2010 required Iran to cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) investigation of its nuclear activities, suspend its uranium enrichment program, suspend its construction of a heavy-water reactor and related projects, and ratify the Additional Protocol to its IAEA safeguards agreement.
Iran did not comply with most of the resolutions’ provisions.
However, Tehran has implemented various restrictions on, and provided the IAEA with additional information about, the government’s nuclear program pursuant to the July 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which Tehran concluded with China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
On the JCPOA’s Implementation Day, which took place on January 16, 2016, all of the previous resolutions’ requirements were terminated.
The nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) and U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231, which the Council adopted on July 20, 2015, compose the current legal framework governing Iran’s nuclear program.
The United States attempted in 2020 to reimpose sanctions on Iran via a mechanism provided for in Resolution 2231.
However, the Security Council did not do so.

The Japanese Ministry of Defense released last week new details on Tokyo’s plan to build two ballistic missile defense warships to counter North Korean missiles.
On Dec. 23, the MoD released additional details on the two BMD ships Japan elected to procure after canceling two planned Aegis Ashore BMD batteries ...
“The document released by the MoD describes the need for two vessels to let the other AEGIS vessels focus on different missions, and stressed once again the utility to have ships with superior capacities than the existing Aegis destroyers – able to cope with current ballistic threats, but also to neutralize hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV)” ...

La Corea del Sud sta discutendo ora apertamente di armarsi con armi nucleari ...
South Korea's president has said that his country might build nuclear weapons in response to the continuing buildup of similar weapons in North Korea.
This is the most explicit announcement so far from Seoul that it’s actively considering nuclear weapons, although the disclosure is also very likely calculated to pressure the United States into giving Seoul a role in nuclear war planning on the peninsula, and perhaps also to redeploy U.S. tactical nuclear weapons to South Korea, the last of these having being withdrawn in 1991.
Indeed, this is apparently the first time since 1991 that a South Korean president has actually brought up the idea of fielding homegrown nuclear weapons.

Le armi nucleari degli Stati Uniti nel 2023 ...
At the beginning of 2023, the US Department of Defense maintained an estimated stockpile of approximately 3,708 nuclear warheads for delivery by ballistic missiles and aircraft.
Most of the warheads in the stockpile are not deployed but rather stored for potential upload onto missiles and aircraft as necessary.
We estimate that approximately 1,770 warheads are currently deployed, of which roughly 1,370 strategic warheads are deployed on ballistic missiles and another 300 at strategic bomber bases in the United States.
An additional 100 tactical bombs are deployed at air bases in Europe.
The remaining warheads — approximately 1,938 — are in storage as a so-called hedge against technical or geopolitical surprises.
Several hundred of those warheads are scheduled to be retired before 2030.

"I have a creative proposal to our German friends.
The Bundeswehr has 93 Tornado multirole combat aircraft that will be decommissioned soon & replaced by F-35.
Though it’s an old jet fighter, but still very powerful.
Why not to deliver these Tornados to Ukraine?

Nel frattempo ... a Mosca ...
The Russian military appears to have emplaced Pantsir air defense systems on top of at least two different government buildings in Moscow, including the Ministry of Defense's headquarters.
The official reason for the apparent deployments is unclear, but Ukrainian forces have demonstrated their ability to conduct strikes at extended ranges using various types of drones.
There could be other explanations, including this just being part of an ostensible exercise of some kind.
Multiple pictures and videos reportedly showing the rooftop Pantsirs began to emerge on social media earlier today, but it is not immediately clear when exactly they were taken.
In addition to the one on top of the headquarters of Russia's Defense Ministry, another looks to have been craned onto a building that is slightly closer to the city center and that Google Maps says belongs to the country's Ministry of Education.

PERICOLO IMMINENTE !!!!!
This year, the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moves the hands of the Doomsday Clock forward, largely (though not exclusively) because of the mounting dangers of the war in Ukraine.
The Clock now stands at 90 seconds to midnight - the closest to global catastrophe it has ever been.
The war in Ukraine may enter a second horrifying year, with both sides convinced they can win.
Ukraine’s sovereignty and broader European security arrangements that have largely held since the end of World War II are at stake.
Also, Russia’s war on Ukraine has raised profound questions about how states interact, eroding norms of international conduct that underpin successful responses to a variety of global risks.
And worst of all, Russia’s thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons remind the world that escalation of the conflict - by accident, intention, or miscalculation - is a terrible risk.
The possibility that the conflict could spin out of anyone’s control remains high.

PERICOLO IMMINENTE !!!!!
La Russia reagisce e incolpa Stati Uniti e NATO ...
The Kremlin expressed alarm on Wednesday that the "Doomsday Clock" had edged closer to midnight than ever, even though the scientists who moved the symbolic dial cited Moscow's own "thinly veiled threats" to use nuclear weapons.
The "Doomsday Clock," created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to illustrate how close humanity has come to the end of the world, on Tuesday moved its "time" in 2023 to 90 seconds to midnight, 10 seconds closer than it has been for the past three years.
Midnight on this clock marks the theoretical point of annihilation.
The clock's hands are moved closer to or further away from midnight based on scientists' reading of existential threats at a particular time.
"The situation as a whole is really alarming," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, calling for a sober appraisal of the tensions between Russia and the West over the Ukraine crisis.

Downed !!!
A trio of Navy warships, service divers and the FBI are on the hunt for the wreckage of a high-altitude Chinese spy balloon that was shot down on Saturday by an Air Force F-22 Raptor off the coast of South Carolina, Defense Department officials told reporters Saturday.
“The balloon, which was being used by the PRC in an attempt to surveil strategic sites in the continental United States, was brought down above U.S. territorial waters,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a Saturday statement.
“On Wednesday, President [Joe] Biden gave his authorization to take down the surveillance balloon as soon as the mission could be accomplished without undue risk to American lives under the balloon’s path.”
The Raptor from the 149 Fighter Squadron, based at Langley Air Force Base, used a single AIM-9X Sidewinder, fired from 58,000 feet in the air, to shoot down the balloon that was operating at 62,000 feet, a senior military official told reporters on Saturday afternoon.

In parata ...
North Korea’s latest military parade once again saw intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs, take center stage, with the country’s biggest-ever display of these weapons, including around a dozen examples of the Hwasong-17, its largest ICBM design to date and very likely the largest road-mobile missile of its kind.
At the same time, Pyongyang showed off a mock-up or a possible prototype of what could be a future solid-fuel ICBM design, which would be a significant development for the country’s rapidly evolving strategic missile forces.

Downed !!! ... ed ora siamo a tre ...
The U.S. downed two high-altitude flying objects that flew into North American airspace near Alaska and over Canada, a Pentagon spokesman said.
On Saturday, a combined intercept mission of American and Canadian fighters detected and downed a high-flying object over Canadian air space after detecting it over Alaska late Friday.

On Friday, around 1:45 p.m., an F-22 pilot, with the U.S. Northern Command, flew from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, and shot an AIM-9x at the object, which was flying at about 40,000 feet, Ryder said during a Friday press briefing.

Le intercettazioni continuano (siamo alla quarta) e le cose si fanno sempre più "strane" ...
In the wake of the latest shootdown of an unidentified object over North American airspace, we now have audio recordings of the in-cockpit communications from the two F-16 fighter jets involved in yesterday afternoon’s intercept over Lake Huron.
What’s immediately striking on listening to them, is that the pilots in question also seem to be perplexed as to what they are actually observing and the precise nature of the craft that they ultimately dispatched.
The object was “decommissioned” over Lake Huron by a pair of 148th Fighter Wing “Bulldogs” F-16CMs.
The fighters launched out of Madison, Wisconsin at around 10:30 AM yesterday, after an alert scramble that turned into a live intercept.
As well as the Vipers, we know that at least one KC-135 tanker out of Pittsburgh and an E-3 AWACS radar plane from Oklahoma were also involved in the operation.

Il Trattato "New START" e l'annuncio di Vladimir Putin ...
On Tuesday, in his long-delayed state-of-the-nation address, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Moscow would suspend its participation in the New START nuclear arms treaty, but not withdraw from it.
Putin added that Russia stands ready to resume nuclear weapons tests if the United States does.
The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty is the only bilateral nuclear arms control agreement between the United States and Russia, which possess the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals and more than 90 percent of its nuclear warheads.
