Pratt & Whitney has developed a fix for its F135 engines afflicted with “harmonic resonance,” which should only take 30 minutes per affected engine to correct, company officials said.
Deliveries of the engine, which powers the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter, resumed Feb. 18 after nearly a two-month hiatus, they said.
As a result, deliveries of all-up F-35 aircraft should resume “very soon,” an industry official said.
The aircraft is one of the U.S. military’s most expensive and important weapons programs.
Heather Uberuaga, a Pratt & Whitney spokesperson, told reporters that the company has developed a field fix for the “very small number” of engines affected by “harmonic resonance,” which is a vibration issue discovered in the aftermath of an F-35B crash at Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth, Texas, facility in December.
Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor for the F-35.
The fix offers an “immediate resolution” to the problem, which is already being made on production engines, and “in the field right now,” according to Uberuaga.
She declined to specify how many engines have the problem or what exactly the fix entails, but she said “for sure we are going to be retrofitting some jets.”
The repair takes about half an hour and “we are not going deep into the core” of the engine to make it, said Uberuaga.

The entire F-35 fleet is slated to get a retrofit its engine manufacturer and the U.S. military say will fix a problem that halted deliveries of the jet for two months.
Engine maker Pratt & Whitney has identified the solution, but the move will affect hundreds of fighters globally.
The decision to make the fix to every fighter in the fleet comes even as both the F-35 Joint Program Office and Pratt say only a “small number” of fighters were actually affected by the problem of “harmonic resonance.”
The JPO confirmed the retrofits to Air & Space Forces Magazine in a March 2 statement, days after Pratt & Whitney officials told reporters they had identified a fix for the vibration issue identified after an F-35B crash at Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth, Texas, facility in December.

Lockheed Martin restarted flying operations at its Fort Worth, Texas, facilities March 6, paving the way for deliveries of F-35s to resume after a nearly three-month hiatus.
It’s not yet clear when the first new F-35 of 2023 will be delivered.
“We resumed F-35 production flight operations today following an F135 engine mitigation action,” the company said in a press statement.
The move follows action by Pratt & Whitney to resume deliveries of F135 engines with the issuance of a technical order to address issues of harmonic resonance in the powerplants.
Lockheed has completed but not delivered 26 F-35s since the hold on flying operations was put in place after a mid-December crash of an F-35B at Fort Worth.
Acceptance flights by Lockheed and Defense Contract Management Agency test pilots are needed to ensure the aircraft work properly and that any deficiencies can be documented.

After a year’s deliberation, the Air Force has decided not to develop Adaptive Engine Technology Program (AETP) powerplants for its F-35s, deeming the cost too high in light of other demands.
Instead, the service will go with a suite of upgrades for the existing F135 engine and press ahead with the Next Generation Advanced Propulsion project meant to power its next fighter, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said in a March 10 budget briefing.
“We needed something that was affordable and that would support all variants” of the F-35, Kendall said.
The upgrades to the F135, deemed the “Engine Core Upgrade” by contractor Pratt & Whitney, will deliver improvements to the engine necessary to meet the demand for additional power and cooling on advanced Block 4 versions of the F-35.
Those specific Block 4 requirements have not been made public.
GE Aerospace and Pratt both developed competing powerplants under the $4 billion-plus AETP program - GE the XA100 and Pratt the XA101.
The two engines achieved improvements of 30 percent in fuel efficiency and at least 10 percent in thrust compared to the stock F135.

Lockheed Martin has resumed delivering F-35s to the U.S. government, the Joint Program Office announced March 14, three months to the day after they were halted in the wake of a Dec. 14, 2022 F-35B crash.
The first aircraft delivered was an F-35A headed for Air Force duty.
The delivery comes eight days after Lockheed was cleared to resume F-35 flight operations, following Pratt & Whitney’s development of a technical fix to address harmonic resonance issues with its F135 engines, discovered in the aftermath of the December crash.
The JPO has not said how many aircraft or engines were affected by the issue, but Lockheed and Pratt have said changes were made in production to prevent the problem.
A fleetwide technical order was issued for all F-35s to be inspected and have a correction applied.
Pratt resumed F135 engine deliveries March 2.
Pratt has asserted that the harmonic resonance issue is a well-understood phenomenon and only manifested after more than 600,000 flight hours on the F135 fleet.

F-35 Lightning II fighters arrived on Okinawa this month as the Air Force continues to swap out its permanently deployed F-15 Eagles at Kadena Air Base, Japan.
The 18th Wing at Kadena said the 355th Fighter Squadron from Eielson Air Base, Alaska began the deployment on March 28.
It is unclear how many F-35s are now operating there.
Air Force officials declined to provide the exact number of F-35s at Kadena or say when more F-15s would depart, citing operational security.
However, officials said the F-35 deployment was temporary as part of the DOD’s plan to place more advanced fighters at Kadena on a rotational basis as the old F-15s head out.
“The next batch of F-15s will depart Kadena in phased movements over the coming months,” a spokesperson for Pacific Air Forces told "Air & Space Forces Magazine".
“Departures will occur once sufficient deployed forces are in place and operational to ensure no gap in steady-state fighter presence.”
Kadena is a strategic location for the Air Force, around 450 miles from Taiwan.
The base bills itself as the “Keystone of the Pacific".(*)

Lockheed Martin will deliver fewer F-35s than expected in 2023 due to delays with the Tech Refresh 3 update, as well as the three-month pause in engine deliveries, but Chief Executive Officer Jim Taiclet expects the government will sign an F-35 Performance Based Logistics contract by the end of the year.
Speaking on a first-quarter earnings call with financial reporters April 18, Taiclet said “we do expect a fraction of total expected 2023 deliveries to be impacted later this year, due to both software maturation related to Technology Refresh 3 and hardware delivery timing.”
He did not specify how many aircraft the company would be short, but the goal for delivery in 2023 was 156 airplanes.
Part of the delay is also due to the three-month halt in F135 engine deliveries from Raytheon’s Pratt & Whitney to Lockheed, which Tacilet noted are provided as government-furnished equipment.
Lockheed was prevented from conducting delivery test flights - and hence, deliveries - of F-35s for three months while Pratt investigated a harmonic vibration problem discovered after the crash of an F-35B at Lockheed’s Fort Worth, Texas plant in December 2022.

It was an unusually humid day in February when Air Force Col. Chris Bergtholdt picked up a shovel at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., and went about a peculiar task.
He and his deputy, Lt. Col. Alex Goldfein, walked together into a construction area where, at a spot marked by four posts near the intersection of two sidewalks in front of where the old 95th Fighter Squadron building once stood, they began to dig.
It did not take long to find what they were looking for - two coffins made of plywood that had rotted away in the wet, sandy dirt.
Inside each coffin was a skeleton: not a real one, but a full-scale, medical school-quality imitation wearing a flight jacket.
The skeletons, both called Mr. Bones, served as mascots for the ‘Boneheads’ of the Air Force’s 95th Fighter Squadron.
The first Mr. Bones was buried in 2010 when the squadron, at the time an F-15C/D training unit, was deactivated, Bergtholdt said in an interview with Air & Space Forces Magazine.
Airmen bought a new Mr. Bones when the unit was reactivated as an F-22 squadron in 2013, but he too was buried in 2019 when the unit was disbanded again after Hurricane Michael devastated the base.
Four years later, the historic squadron will be reactivated as an F-35 unit this June.
It will be the first of three such squadrons to stand up at Tyndall, and Mr. Bones is one of the first squadron members to return.
“There was a whole culture around Mr. Bones, kind of this aura and personality around him even though obviously it’s this inanimate object,” said Bergtholdt, commander of Tyndall’s 325th Operations Group and a former F-15 student at Tyndall’s 1st Fighter Squadron.

U.S. Air Force F-35A Joint Strike Fighter pilots flying patrols along NATO's eastern flank have been detecting air defense systems – likely Russian, or possibly Belarusian – operating in unexpected ways, according to a report from Air Force Times (*).
These incidents highlight the Joint Strike Fighter's already substantial electronic warfare capabilities and the importance of forthcoming upgrades to these systems.
Above all else, these encounters in Europe underscore the importance of developing, and the inherent potential of, so-called cognitive electronic warfare capabilities.
Cognitive electronic warfare, at its core, refers to efforts to automate and otherwise speed up various aspects of electronic warfare, including the rapid updating of the functionality of existing systems and the development of all-new countermeasures.
The absolute "holy grail" of the concept envisions electronic warfare suites being able to do all of this by themselves, in real-time, even right in the middle of an actual combat mission.

Lockheed prepares to bring undisclosed country into F-35 programme ...

By Ryan Finnerty - 05 May 2023

Lockheed Martin, manufacturer of the F-35 stealth fighter, is preparing to integrate an “undisclosed” country into the multinational fifth-generation aircraft programme.
The company landed a contract worth more than $25 million through the US Department of Defense (DoD) on 3 May (*) for “support of an undisclosed country’s integration as a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customer into the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programme”.
Few details are available, but the award seems to involve the work of preparing a country that is an existing customer to receive its first F-35s.
The funds come from an “FMS customer”, according to the DoD, meaning a foreign government seeking to purchase American weapon systems through the US Department of Defence’s foreign military sales programme.
Under FMS agreements, the DoD acts as an intermediary between foreign buyers and American manufacturers, holding customers’ payment in escrow and negotiating certain contract and delivery terms on their behalf.
Lockheed declines to identify the undisclosed country involved in the 3 May contract, referring inquiries to the DoD’s joint procurement office (JPO) for the F-35 programme.
The JPO says it is unable to name the customer but confirms the country is an existing F-35 FMS customer.
That narrows down the possibilities.
There are currently 17 countries participating in the F-35 programme, of which eight – the USA, UK, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Denmark and Norway – are founding partners, having shared the cost of designing and producing the advanced jet.
Turkey was originally among that group, too, but was dismissed from the F-35 programme by Washington in 2019 after Ankara moved to acquire a Russian S-400 air defence system.
The country is still attempting to secure a small number of jets from its original order of 100 F-35s.
Of the original partners, only Canada is still awaiting F-35s.
Ottawa did not officially enter a procurement contract with Lockheed until early 2023.
The Danish government took delivery of its first F-35s in 2021.
However, those aircraft were flown to Luke AFB in Arizona, where Danish crews are undergoing pilot and maintainer training.
The fighters are expected to be transferred to Denmark in December.
The undisclosed customer is seemingly among the additional nine FMS F-35 buyers, which were not original partners but have signed to acquire the jet.
Because the DoD contract announcement cites “integration” – which typically occurs prior to aircraft deliveries – the customer seems likely to be among buyers that have yet to field F-35s.
Among the nine non-founding FMS customers, Israel, Japan, South Korea have already received aircraft.
Belgium, Poland, Singapore, Finland, Germany and Switzerland have not.
In April, Lockheed said it had begun producing Poland’s F-35s, which the company expects to begin delivering in 2024.
Lockheed and the Pentagon have finalised contracts for F-35 Lots 15-17, which cover Poland, Finland and Belgium, in addition to existing operators.
Poland seems an unlikely candidate to request anonymity, as it has been open about seeking to integrate F-35As into its air force, which currently operates Soviet Bloc MiG-29s and Su-22s and American F-16Cs made by Lockheed Martin.
That leaves Belgium and Finland as likely originators of the undisclosed integration contract.
Another possibility is Switzerland, which has long maintained geopolitical neutrality.
However, the Swiss government only committed to the F-35 in 2022, meaning delivery of those aircraft is still several years away.
The Swiss contract covers the procurement of 36 F-35As to be delivered between 2027 and 2030, according to Lockheed.
Singapore, whose strategic geographic location and proximity to China could be cause for requesting anonymity, has also not yet taken delivery of F-35s.
Lockheed indicates those are not scheduled until 2026
.
(*) ... Dalla pagina "Contracts" del "DoD" del 3 Maggio 2023 ...
Lockheed Martin Corp., Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Fort Worth, Texas, is awarded a $25,296,081 cost-plus-fixed-fee, firm-fixed-price modification (P00005) to a previously awarded contract (N0001922C0032).
This modification adds scope to provide for continued program management, logistics, sustainment, and system engineering support, in support of an undisclosed country’s integration as a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) customer into the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.
Work will be performed in Fort Worth, Texas (85%); Orlando, Florida (10%); and various location outside the continental U.S. (5%), and is expected to be completed in April 2026.
FMS customer funds in the amount of $25,296,081 will be obligated at the time of award, none‬ of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

F-35 ... nuovi ritardi nelle consegne ...
