Despite the high price tag, air-launched cruise missiles have become a luxury few European nations can live without.
While nations with a history of expeditionary warfare such as France, Germany and the U.K. began investing in these capabilities long ago, the recent crisis in Ukraine and the re-arming of Russia has stirred other countries to consider how to deal with the new generation of long-range ground-based air defense systems.

Russia accused NATO on Monday of destabilizing northern Europe and the Baltics by carrying out drills there and announced new military exercises of its own, increasing tension over the Ukraine crisis.
NATO responded by blaming Moscow for instability in the region, while British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he was concerned by "extremely aggressive" probing of Britain's air space by Russian planes.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg .....
NATO Announces Interim Spearhead Force .....
12/3/2014
NATO announced Tuesday that an interim “Spearhead Force” will be operational next year as part of the Alliance’s efforts to improve readiness and assure eastern allies following Russia’s recent aggression in Ukraine, according to a Dec. 2 release.
http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/news_115552.htm
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the plus up is “the biggest increase in our collective defense since the end of the Cold War.”
He added that the readiness action plan enables NATO “to meet any threats from wherever they come.”
The interim force will primarily be made up of troops based in Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway, although all 28 countries “will contribute to this effort into the next year.”
The Spearhead Force will “provide the quick reaction capability we need, straight away,” added Stoltenberg.
NATO defense ministers are slated to decide the full size and design of the force in February, and the “aim is to stand it up in 2016,” states the release.
“So, we will be 28 for 28 through 2015 to assure allies and to deter threats,” said Stoltenberg.

I timori della Lituania .....
Russian Aggression Prompts Lithuania to Raise Troop Readiness .....
Marc V. Schanz (12/10/2014)
Russian military activity around the Baltics has escalated over the past three days, prompting Lithuania’s military to place its rapid reaction force on alert status.
“Since Saturday, we have observed a rise in the activity of the Russian Federation’s forces in the Kalingrad region as well as in the western part of the Russian Federation,” including air, naval, and land activity, Chief of the Lithuanian Joint Staff Army Brig. Gen. Vilmantas Tamošaitis declared Monday evening on Lithuanian television.
http://en.delfi.lt/lithuania/defence/li ... d=66615972
Lithuania also released recent surveillance and intercept data on Monday, showing a large naval group accompanied by military aircraft, which was spotted in the Baltic Sea Dec. 6, and on Dec. 7 NATO fighters scrambled three times to intercept both Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers as well as military transports.
http://www.kam.lt/en/news_1098/current_ ... tml?pbck=0
NATO also reported intercepts continued on Monday.
As a result, Tamošaitis said Lithuania has put its 2,500-strong “rapid response units” on an alert posture.
US European Command spokesman Navy Capt. Greg Hicks, deferred to the Lithuanians to comment on the scenario, but echoed NATO critiques of Russian military flights telling
Air Force Magazine they “do not help de-escalate the current situation.”
The Russian flights often do not use their transponders or file flight plans, which poses risk to civil aviation.

The German Air Force (GAF) is not seeing a more confrontational attitude from Russian pilots it is intercepting over the Baltic region, despite concerns being raised by Western leaders of increased aggression over recent weeks.
Speaking during a media tour of Amari Air Base, Estonia, on 17 December, the GAF's detachment commander Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Schnitger said that the Russians that his pilots have encountered since they took on the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission in September have not shown any particular signs of hostility.
"We have seen no change in behaviour from the Russian pilots," he said.
"Our task is to ID them, not to harass them. Our aim is to be visible to them, and so we don't fly our normal tactics which would have us trying to sneak up on them. There is no [combat manoeuvring] from us or them."
