STOCKHOLM--Swedish defense group Saab AB (SAAB-B.SK) declined to comment Wednesday on reports that Argentina is looking to buy 24 of its Gripen NG jet fighters, to be made in Brazil.
At the signing of a bilateral cooperation agreement between Brazil and Argentina in Sao Paulo Tuesday, the Argentinian defense minister Agustín Rossi announced a decision to begin purchase negotiations for the jets.
"The conditions of purchase, as well as the eventual Argentine participation in the production of these aircraft will be the subject of negotiations in the coming months, between representatives of the two countries," Brazil's defense ministry said in a note posted on its website.
Saab spokesman Sebastian Carlsson, told the Wall Street Journal Wednesday that the company did not wish to comment on the matter until a contract with Brazil has been signed, which is likely to be by December this year.
Brazil's government announced at the end of 2013 its intention to buy 36 Gripen jet fighters from the Swedish company in a contract worth an estimated $4.5 billion.
As part of the deal Brazilian firms would build 80% of the airframe of the Gripen as part of a technology transfer package.

Following the announcement in October that a $5.8 billion contract had been signed for the first batch of 36 aircraft, an air force representative confirmed to the International Fighter conference in London on 18 November that the full requirement will be for 108 airframes.
.While the FAB official made no mention of the proposed Sea Gripen (Gripen M) development proposed by Saab for the Brazilian Navy, the requirement for 'at least' 108 aircraft for the air force would provide the economies of scale needed to develop such a maritime variant for the Sao Paulo aircraft carrier.
