In the event that the President travels outside of North America using a VC-25A as Air Force One, an E-4B will deploy to a second airport in the vicinity of the President's destination, to be readily available in the event of a world crisis or an emergency that renders the VC-25A unusable. When the President has visited Honolulu, Hawaii, an E-4B has often been stationed 200 miles away at Hilo International Airport on Hawaii Island.

If You Want American-Made …

John A. Tirpak12/5/2014

The Boeing 747-8 is likely to be the basis of the next Air Force One presidential transport, US Transportation Command chief Gen. Paul Selva said Thursday.
Talking with defense reporters in Washington, D.C., Selva said “we haven’t said we want a specific airplane” but he acknowledged that if the selection criteria demand a US-built airframe, “there’s only one.”
Selva said the existing VC-25A aircraft—both 747-200s—“are approaching end of lifetime,” and the Air Force will soon be the only operator of the type—counting up to six others in service, such as the E-4B command post.
Being the sole operator is “not an enviable place to be … it makes it exorbitantly expensive to maintain and keep,” he noted.
There are ways to keep costs down in buying a new version of the 747, Selva said.
Commercially available first-class “lay flat seats” that come with their own internet connectivity can be bought off the shelf to support the needs of staff working aboard the jet for “days, not hours.”
The existing jets have unique, “handmade seats.”
The 747-8 has adequate “space and power” for the antennas and communications gear needed to “satisfy the requirements of the President in his role of Commander-in-Chief,” Selva said, not to mention the legion of security, staff, and press that usually fly along.

It’s the Dash-8 for Air Force One .....

John A. Tirpak (1/29/2015)

The Air Force will base the next presidential transport, call sign Air Force One, on the Boeing 747-8, the service announced Wednesday.

http://www.boeing.com/boeing/commercial ... round.page

The Dash-8 “is the only aircraft manufactured in the United States,” which when “fully missionized” can meet the project’s stringent requirements, according to service Secretary Deborah Lee James.
Made in the USA is important because the aircraft is “one of the most visible symbols of the United States of America,” James said.
The existing VC-25s are 747-200Bs, which have been flying since 1987.
They’ve performed well, James said, but are afflicted with “parts obsolescence, diminishing manufacturing sources, and increased downtimes for maintenance” and they need to be replaced.
Air Force One is a tough mission, she continued, because USAF must provide the President with “safe and reliable air transportation with high levels of security and communication capability as the alternate White House.”
The Dash-8 will provide that “for future Presidents.”
A service spokesman said USAF will acquire three aircraft in total.
Separate requests for proposals—one for the airframe and one for mission equipment—will be issued this year, with a contract award expected in 2017.
The first airplane that will be ready for modification to the Air Force One configuration is to be delivered in late 2018, and is to be operational in 2023.
On this schedule, President Obama’s successor might get to fly in it, assuming he or she wins two terms.
The Dash-8 closely resembles the iconic 747, but with an extended upper deck and new wings.

E' ..... complicato .....
The aircraft is the easy part.
In this case, it’s a massive, four engine, two-floor Boeing 747-8 from a company that has been churning out aircraft from its Washington State assembly lines for nearly a century.
But the must-have equipment needed on the plane that acts as a mobile White House is where things get more complicated.
