B-1s to Return to Flight This Week .....

Air Force Global Strike Command announced Tuesday that its B-1Bs will return to flight this week following a June 7 grounding, which includes bombers deployed to the Middle East, due to an ejection seat issue.
The grounding gave the command time to “thoroughly evaluate the egress components” and assess risk, the command said in a statement.
“We have high confidence that the fleet’s egress systems are capable and the fleet is ready to return to normal flight operations,” Maj. Gen. Thomas Bussiere, commander of 8th Air Force, said in a release (*).
The grounding was announced following a May 1 incident where a B-1 was forced to make an emergency landing at Midland International Air & Space Port in Texas.
Pictures of the aircraft showed an open hatch above the weapons systems officer’s position, which indicates a possible attempt to eject.
That incident is still under investigation.
US Army Col. Sean Ryan, spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, said he could not comment on military operations when asked Tuesday about the impact of the grounding and the B-1's return to flight.

The first B-1B bombers returned to flight this week following a nearly four-week stand-down due to issues with drogue chutes in the aircraft’s ejection seats.
Air Force Global Strike Command said in a Tuesday release (*) that more aircraft are expected to return to flight in the near future as inspections and maintenance are completed, but the command did not say how many aircraft already had returned to flying status.

Only six of the Air Force’s 61 B-1 bombers are fully mission-capable, a South Dakota senator said July 30.
The B-1 fleet is in the midst of an intensive slate of maintenance work and upgrades.
Of the 61 jets, 15 are in depot maintenance and 39 aircraft are down for inspections or other issues, Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said during a Senate Armed Services Committee confirmation hearing for Gen. John Hyten, the US Strategic Command chief who is under consideration to become vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In response, Hyten implored lawmakers to provide B-1 maintenance funding to reverse the fleet’s problems.

The Air Force likely needs at least 225 bombers, and that means it should probably hang onto the B-1 fleet - if studies show the hard-used aircraft can hold up, Global Strike Command chief Gen. Timothy Ray said at AFA's 2019 Air, Space & Cyber Conference.

Fonte ... airforcemag.com ... http://www.airforcemag.com/Features/Pag ... -Last.aspx ...
The Air Force is considering reducing the B-1 bomber fleet and using the savings to pay for a range of bomber fleet improvements, including a speed-up in the pace of B-21 bomber buys, and more long-range weapons, Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein told reporters Sept. 17, giving a limited peek ahead at the fiscal 2021 budget request.
He said he could not “lean forward” with many details because the budget is not yet approved.

The Air Force’s continuous bomber presence in the Pacific will continue to rely on the venerable B-52 for the foreseeable future as Air Force Global Strike Command wrestles with improving the readiness of the B-1B.
Since 2004, the Air Force has kept bombers stationed at Andersen AFB, Guam, with the B-52s and B-1s rotating through the area, with B-2s occasionally deploying for short periods of time.
For the past couple of years, B-52s have been the mainstay at Andersen as AFGSC pulled B-1s back from deployments after flying hard in the Middle East for years at a pace that “broke” the jets, AFGSC boss Gen. Timothy Ray said.

The health of the Air Force’s B-1 fleet, which spent much of 2019 plagued with readiness issues, has improved, enabling Air Force Global Strike Command boss Gen. Timothy Ray to send the bombers on a short-notice deployment to the Middle East with plans for a full task force rotation in the near future.
Years of overuse has strained the fleet, causing structural issues with the airframe.
In Spring 2018, the bombers couldn’t fly because of an issue with a failed ejection seat and the fleet also was grounded earlier this year because of issues with the aircraft’s drogue chute.
But in recent months, the fleet’s readiness has improved thanks to a focus on fleet management, additional maintenance assistance from Boeing, success in working through time-compliant technical orders, and by addressing problems with the aircraft’s egress systems.
Now the B-1 is back in the planning rotation for deployments, Ray told Air Force Magazine on Dec. 8.

The first of 17 B-1B bombers to be retired this fiscal year under a Congressionally-approved divestiture plan flew to the “boneyard” at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., on Feb. 17, Air Force Global Strike Command said.
The aircraft was based at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., but the Air Force did not provide specifics on which aircraft retired.
“This action will not affect the service’s lethality or any associated maintenance manpower,” AFGSC said in a press release (*).
It will allow a focus of maintenance and “depot-level manpower on the remaining aircraft, increasing readiness and paving the way for the bomber fleet modernization.”
