The US Marine Corps will have to wait until at least March for its new heavy lift helicopter, the Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion, to make its maiden flight.
Originally planned for summer 2014, the King Stallion’s first flight was pushed to the end of the year when a crack was found in one of the four gear boxes of a ground test article.
US Naval Air Systems Command now says the aircraft will enter flight testing “sometime between March and May next year.”

Bell Helicopter Textron Inc., Fort Worth, Texas, is being awarded a $461,142,760 fixed-price incentive (firm target) modification to a previously awarded firm-fixed-price contract (N00019-13-C-0023) to definitize the manufacture and delivery of 12 Lot 13 UH-1Y aircraft; 16 Lot 13 AH-1Z aircraft, and 16 auxiliary fuel kits.
Work will be performed in Fort Worth, Texas (60 percent); and Amarillo, Texas (40 percent), and is expected to be completed in February 2019.
Fiscal 2016 aircraft procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $461,142,760 will be obligated at time of award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) appears to be confident that the Sikorsky CH-53K programme has put the gearbox failures and parts delays experienced prior to first flight in October 2015 behind it, but the Lockheed Martin-owned helicopter manufacturer won’t receive bonus cheques for lateness.

The US Marine Corps is pressing forward with a fleet-wide maintenance reset of the Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion as it awaits delivery of the CH-53K King Stallion replacement, which has flown for the first time with an external load.
Speaking at a congressional hearing on 20 April, USMC deputy commandant for aviation Jon Davis said the E-model has “probably the worst” readiness rate in the service’s aviation inventory.
An independent assessment concluded that not enough attention has been paid to the heavy-lift type after 13 years of punishing combat operations in the Middle East and many CH-53 pilots haven't been able to log enough flight time because their aircraft are grounded for repairs.

The Naval Air Systems Command awarded April 18 a $25 million firm fixed-price advance acquisition contract to Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, Stratford, Conn. for long-lead parts and materials required to build and deliver the first Low Rate Initial Production Lot 1(LRIP-1) of the U.S. Marine Corps CH-53K King Stallion.

A CH-53K King Stallion, the U.S. Marine Corps' newest helicopter, completed its first external load flight test Apr. 19 at Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation's Development Flight Center, suspending, then releasing, a 12,000 lb. load.
Further tests will continue to expand the envelope with external payloads of 12,000 pounds flown first in hover, then incrementally increasing speeds up to 120 knots, followed by 20,000 and 27,000 pound external payloads.

The US government is preparing a response to Germany’s letter of request for pricing and availability of 41 heavy-lift Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion helicopters to begin replacing the 80 G-models the country currently operates.
Berlin is considering both the CH-53K and the Boeing CH-47 Chinook to meet its heavy vertical lift requirement, and the US Marine Corps is keen to take advantage of the better pricing that could be achieved by adding a sizable King Stallion order at the front-end of the production ramp.

The US Marine Corps ideally wants its new Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion to carry 13.6t (30,000lb) externally over 110nm (204km) unrefueled, but early analysis indicates that it will fall approximately 907kg short of that “objective” key performance requirement.
The minimum target is 12.2t (27,000lb) over 110nm in high, hot environments, which US Naval Air Systems Command officials expect the in-development aircraft to comfortably achieve.
However, CH-53K integrated product team deputy Col John Neville says it is too early to tell exactly what external load target the CH-53K will meet or what programmatic steps the NAVAIR might take to bump up the aircraft’s performance to the objective requirement.

Boeing and Sikorsky are touting the benefits of their heavy-lift rotorcraft offerings to Germany in a bid to influence the decision on a replacement for the air force’s CH-53G.
Berlin is considering both the Sikorsky CH-53K and the Boeing CH-47F/extended range Chinook as its options for replacing the CH-53G variant.
Details of the requirement remain speculative because a request for proposals is yet to be released, but Boeing emphasises the availability and success of the Chinook, while Sikorsky claims new characteristics such as fly-by-wire controls, plus the company’s experience with Germany.

The Marine Corps is advancing through its test plan for the Sikorsky CH-53K heavy lift helicopter faster than previously planned, with the service successfully carrying a 20,000-pound load externally for the first time on May 26.
The heavy lift helicopter program office at Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), PMA-261, began with lifting a 12,000-pound external load and moved up to the 20,000-pound load late last month– just shy of the weight of a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV).
The program office will continue testing at that weight, flying the helicopter at higher speeds and expanding the flight envelop before eventually moving to a 27,000-pound lift, NAVAIR spokesman Billy Ray Brown told USNI News.

All 147 of the US Marine Corps’ Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion rotorcraft will be overhauled to address safety and availability issues that have been evident in the fleet since 2014, the service has announced.
Following the fatal crash of a US Navy MH-53E Sea Dragon variant in January 2014 which resulted from an electrical fault sparking a fire, an investigation concluded that the condition of the aircraft was “degraded”, and the remaining examples will be “reset” to increase the safety and readiness of the fleet.

The Marine Corps ultimately plans to buy 200 CH-53Ks by 2029 to replace its fleet of aging CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters, which have the most serious readiness problems of all aircraft in the Marine Corps' current fleet.
Earlier this month, Rep. Niki Tsongas, D-Mass., asserted that the price for each CH-53K had ballooned from $87.1 million to $122 million per helicopter, which is made by Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company.

The total acquisition cost of the U.S. Marine Corps’ new heavy lift helicopter has increased from $26.1 billion to $27.7 billion — a result of growing labor costs and the move of its production line, the service’s program manager said in an exclusive interview with Defense News.
Col. Hank Vanderborght, program manager for U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy heavy lift helicopters, confirmed that the CH-53K King Stallion program has run a 21 percent cost overrun against its 2006 baseline as of this month’s Milestone C decision.
That puts it 9 percent away from a Nunn-McCurdy breach that would trigger a decision from the Defense Department on whether to re-baseline the program.
But as the program moves into production, Vanderborght is confident that cost-saving initiatives that the Marine Corps plans to put into place going forward can keep the King Stallion on track.
“I am not concerned about [the cost growth] because we’re doing a lot of good things to control it,” he told Defense News.
“And I think that the things that we’re doing to control it are working.”

Sikorsky has confirmed that the CH-53K King Stallion will make its air show debut at next year's ILA Berlin event, as the airframer pursues a lucrative export contract with Germany.
