The F-35A fleet is now the second-largest in the Air Force’s inventory, behind the F-16, surpassing F-15s and A-10s.
There are now 283 Joint Strike Fighters in the Air Force’s arsenal, compared to 281 A-10s, 234 F-15C/Ds, and 218 F-15Es.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. told the House Appropriations defense subcommittee on May 7 the F-35 reached the milestone within the last week.
The Air Force plans to buy 1,763 of the aircraft, and the numbers of jets have been growing at bases inside the continental United States and Alaska.
Jets are expected to start arriving at the first USAF overseas base - RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom - later this year.
Brown told lawmakers the service is still undertaking a study of tactical aviation requirements to determine the right mix of fifth-generation and legacy fighters.

F-35 americani in Francia per partecipare, assieme a Britannici e Francesi, all'esercitazione "Atlantic Trident 2021"...
F-35s and Airmen from Hill Air Force Base, Utah, deployed to Europe this week to take part in multiple exercises, including a major France-led air exercise focused on integrating fourth- and fifth-generation aircraft.
The F-35s from the 4th Fighter Squadron touched down at Mont-de-Marsan Air Base, France, on May 10.
The squadron is made up of Active-duty Airmen from the 388th Fighter Wing and Reservists from the 419th Fighter Wing.
The base is hosting Atlantic Trident 21, which runs May 17-28, with participants from the U.S., France, and the United Kingdom.
This is the third iteration of the exercise, which will include “complex air operations in a contested multinational joint force environment” ...

The F-35’s operational success outweighs its readiness and sustainment challenges, it is making progress against those issues, and it is too strategically important not to keep funding, House Armed Services committee member Rep. Anthony Brown (D-Maryland) said at a defense conference.
Speaking at the McAleese FY2022 Defense Programs Conference on May 12, Brown explained that he signed a letter from 132 House lawmakers to the body’s leadership urging full F-35 support because “it’s performing well” in “executing … real-world missions.”
The April 28 letter by the leaders of the Joint Strike Fighter Caucus urged the House leadership to support whatever request the services submit for buying F-35s in fiscal 2022 as well as any that appear on their “unfunded requirements” lists.
The letter was prompted by recent comments from House subcommittee leaders Reps. John Garamendi (D-California) and Donald Norcross (D-New Jersey) that they would oppose adding any F-35s to service requests this year in order to let the sustainment system catch up to the aircraft already in service.
Sustainment rates on the F-35 have been the biggest of several sticking points in the program.

airforcemag.comAir Force Wants to Cut 421 Old Fighters, Buy 304 New Ones

The Air Force will propose about a 10 percent cut in its planned F-35 purchases in the upcoming future years defense plan, citing sustainment costs for the jet well above what was expected, and because the service prefers to wait for the more advanced Block 4 model.
Budget talking points obtained by Air Force Magazine appear to show USAF giving the F-35 program an ultimatum: Get costs under control over the next six to eight years or the overall buy will be sharply reduced.
According to the talking points, which were prepared for Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown., Jr., the Air Force plans to request 48 F-35s in Fiscal year 2022, but only 43 aircraft a year from fiscal 2023-2026.
The result will be a FYDP buy of 220 jets versus 240 under the previous plan.

F-15E Strike Eagle & F-15EX Eagle II ... i battistrada del Lightning II ...
At its Northern Edge 21 exercises in Alaska, the US Air Force (USAF) tested the Boeing F-15 conducting an electronic attack to clear a path for a Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter.
The test reveals how the USAF may use its legacy fleet of F-15E Strike Eagles, as well as its new F-15EX Eagle IIs, in coordination with its stealth aircraft for air strikes deep into enemy territory.
The F-15 used the BAE Systems ALQ-250 Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS).
The demonstration, which took place on 14 May, was done to help evaluate a tactic improvement proposal that came out of the service’s annual Weapons and Tactics Conference, the USAF said on 17 May.
The tactic is part of an effort to minimise “the F-35’s emissions to get closer to the adversary”, the service says.
Electronic emissions would betray the stealth aircraft’s location.

:thumbleft:
The Air Force’s fighter fleet, led by the F-35A, turned in a better overall mission capable rate in 2020, even with limitations imposed by the pandemic, than it did in 2019, according to figures provided to Air Force Magazine.
The F-35’s MC rates soared, and rates even improved for the F-15C, which the Air Force is anxious to divest because of its age.
The F-15E’s MC rate declined, however.
“Mission capable” rates describe the percentage of jets in the inventory that are ready and available to do at least one of their assigned missions over a period of time.
“Full mission capable” is a measure of how many aircraft in a fleet are ready to do their full complement of missions over that period.
The F-35A’s mission capable rate leaped from 61.6 percent in fiscal ’19 to 76.07 percent in FY ’20, according to Air Force figures.

L'Aeronautica Militare ringrazia ... la pandemia ... :eeeek:
The Italian Air Force is getting its money’s worth out of its single F-35B jet.
The jet made a short landing Tuesday on the Italian island of Pantelleria to join a British Royal Air Force F-35B.
The two Joint Strike Fighters practiced fast ground refueling from a parked C-130J, marking the first time F-35Bs from Italy and the U.K. have trained together.
The British jet had flown in from the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, which is steaming past the island on a flag-flying mission to the Asia-Pacific region.
The Italian F-35B arrived on Pantelleria, a tiny speck in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, for the second time as it tests Italy’s plan to deploy the type to advance bases with very short runways.
And it is all thanks to COVID-19.
After rolling off Italy’s F-35 final assembly line, the Air Force’s first and so far only “B” model was due to fly to the U.S. for pilot training in February 2020, but was stuck in Italy because of pandemic-related restrictions.
According to officials, things have worked out just fine.
“Because of the pandemic ... it stayed in Italy, and in a year we have acquired notable experience, including on maintenance, qualifying technicians, and achieved a series of certifications allowing activities like today,” said Gen. Gianni Candotti, the Italian Air Force’s operational commander.
“Partnering is absolutely important in Europe where we and the British use the F-35B, and we exploring [additional] opportunities to exercise together.”

Continuing delays from COVID-19 disruptions mean it will take longer than expected to make up the backlog of F-35 jets stemming from the pandemic, said Bridget Lauderdale, Lockheed Martin’s vice president and general manager for the fighter.
Lauderdale told reporters visiting the company’s Fort Worth, Texas, F-35 production line June 10 that while “you may have heard” that it will take “a couple of years” to get back on pre-COVID delivery schedules, the actual recovery timeline is not decided and is still being discussed with the Joint Program Office and international F-35 partners.
She said 120 F-35s were delivered in 2020 - 22 shy of the planned number - and the company expects it will deliver “between 133 and 139” of the fighters in 2021.
Lockheed Chief Financial Officer Kenneth R. Possenriede told a brokerage conference June 4 that Lockheed is ramping up to deliver 169 F-35s in fiscal 2022, but Lauderdale said that number was based on an out-of-date evaluation of COVID impacts.
“The number he used this week was based on a recovery assessment made last summer,” Lauderdale said.
“As we were entering the first handful of months of COVID, there was a deliver recovery assessment made, … but certainly it did not anticipate we would be continuing in the pandemic and continue to be disrupted into 2021.”
Pre-pandemic plans called for 155 F-35s to be produced in 2021.

Nave Cavour ... prossimo l'imbarco di un F-35B ...
The Italian Navy aircraft carrier Cavour will receive its first F-35B this month after the vessel started certification work in the U.S. earlier this year to host the aircraft.
The fighter jet is undergoing final checks at the Cameri air base in Italy, home to the country’s F-35 final assembly and checkout facility, which is due to turn out 90 F-35s for Italy, including 30 F-35Bs.
“The test flights have been completed, so within a few days [the aircraft] will be available for the Navy to collect and it will [be] delivered directly to the Cavour,” said Rear Adm. Dino Torresi, the head of the Navy’s air operations.
The Navy previously took delivery of two other F-35Bs, which were sent to the U.S. to join a training program for pilots and technical personnel.
The new delivery makes it three out of a final order of 15 aircraft for the Navy.

effettua “onorevoli short TO e altrettanti vertical Landing”

The idea is that the U.K. could continue cross-decking with other countries that also have F-35s, like Italy.
Wallace (*) said he recently met with his Italian counterpart and that Italy is eager to attain its F-35 certifications.
“The whole point of it is it’s a carrier that will interoperate very well with F-35Bs. And that’s what we’re working on together and the Italians are incredibly keen to sort of get certified, or verified – whatever the term is – to use it. I think that’s the plan is that first of all, for us, it’ll be as much a NATO asset,” he said.

Ogni giorno una nuova !!!
More than 40 F-35s across the U.S. Air Force are currently without engines according to the most recent data, top officials told Congress on July 13.
Speaking before the House Armed Services subcommittee on tactical air and land forces, acting Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Darlene Costello said 41 of the fifth-generation fighters don’t have an engine due to maintenance issues, while 56 F135 power modules are currently being repaired at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.
There are 272 F-35A jets in the Air Force’s inventory, meaning nearly 15 percent are without an engine.
Lt. Gen. Eric T. Fick, F-35 program executive officer, confirmed Costello’s numbers while noting that the exact number can be calculated in different ways.

I problemi?
As the F-35 program inches its way through operational testing, the number of critical technical deficiencies is slowly dwindling, dropping from 11 critical deficiencies in January to seven in July.
However, the exact nature of these problems will remain unknown to the public, even when the deficiency itself is not classified.
The F-35 Joint Program Office declined to characterize the fighter jet’s remaining seven critical deficiencies, but said in a statement that it has identified and tested fixes for each problem.
“Details of [deficiencies] - even unclassified [deficiencies] - are not publicly releasable because the information is operationally sensitive, and its release could be detrimental to U.S. and international war fighters operating F-35s worldwide,” said F-35 JPO spokeswoman Laura Seal.
Seal noted that all remaining critical deficiencies are classified as category 1B issues, which represent a “critical impact on mission readiness.”
The more serious category 1A problems indicate a risk to the operator’s life.
Lockheed Martin also declined to issue additional details on the deficiencies.

Il Giappone ha scelto dove dislocare gli F-35B ...
Japan’s defense minister has confirmed that the U.S. ally will base its Lockheed-Martin F-35B Lightning II Short Take off and Vertical Landing or STOVL fighter jets at the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands.
Nobuo Kishi, the Japanese minister of defense, said July 16 that the Japan Air Self-Defense Force or JASDF base of Nyutabaru on the east coast of the island of Kyushu was “the best fit” to deploy the stealthy fifth-generation fighter.
The base is currently home to an operational and a training squadron of JASDF Mitsubishi F-15J/DJ Eagle interceptors, and is the southernmost JASDF combat base on Japan’s main islands.
He also revealed that the deployment of the F-35B to Nyutabaru will begin in the 2025 fiscal year with six aircraft.
An additional two aircraft will arrive in the following year. Japan’s fiscal year runs from the 1st of April to the 30th of March of the following year.

Lockheed Martin took a $225 million loss on a classified developmental aeronautics program, company officers disclosed in a July 26 second-quarter results call with reporters, but the program is moving forward, and the company expects it to enter production.
Company officers also said the unit cost of the F-35A will likely go up in the next lot contract and that the program will be “rebaselined” over the next couple years with a more stretched-out delivery schedule, and signaled a phase-out to the U-2 spyplane.
They also said they expect to close out any Federal Trade Commission concerns and conclude their planned acquisition of Aerojet Rocketdyne, announced last December, by the end of this year.
The charge on the classified program came after a May “deep dive” with government and company auditors, Lockheed Martin Chief Financial Officer Kenneth R. Possenriede said during the earnings call.
About 40 percent of the cost of the secret project has already been spent, he noted, with the remainder “embedded in the new estimate to complete” the program.

Ulteriori dettagli ...

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and new Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall have a history, and some parts of it look to be repeating themselves.
Kendall, now in his third week leading the Department of the Air Force, oversaw DOD weapons buying as the undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology, and logistics from 2012 to 2016.
For the two years before that, he served as principal deputy undersecretary and acting undersecretary in the same office.

As the Defense Department starts to put money toward advancements that will keep the F-35 relevant against Chinese threats, incumbent engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney is making the argument that F135 propulsion system upgrades should be part of the equation.
Over the next decade, the Pentagon is set to upgrade the Lockheed Martin-made F-35 with a suite of new weapons, computing technologies and software that will make the jet a more capable foe, as Russia and China field their own improvements to fighters and air defense systems.
But F135 engine modernization is not included in those Block 4 upgrades - at least not currently, said Jen Latka, Pratt & Whitney’s vice president for the F135 engine program.
“Now is the time we need to get the requirement in place, the funding, and then start the program,” she told Defense News in an Aug. 6 interview.
In March, Pratt & Whitney delivered a study to the F-35 Joint Program Office on F135 engine upgrades, which proposed two enhanced engine packages, which could be applied to all three variants of the F-35.

Al tempo stesso, però ...
New engine technologies emerging from the Adaptive Engine Transition Program are “vastly different” from those now flying on Air Force fighters, so retrofitting the current force with the new power plants won’t be possible, the service’s program executive officer for fighters and advanced aircraft said Aug. 12.
The AETP technologies “really are future looking” and not applicable to existing fighters, Brig. Gen. Dale R. White told reporters in a press conference associated with the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s recent Life Cycle Industry Days symposium.
The AETP, based on previous advanced engine programs, got underway in 2016, and full-scale engine tests have been conducted this year. General Electric’s version is the XA-100, while Pratt & Whitney’s is the XA-101.

"ODIN Base Kit (OBK)" ... cominciata l'assegnazione ai primi reparti ...
The F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office (JPO), in partnership with Lockheed Martin, has achieved a milestone in the transition to the modernized Operational Data Integrated Network (ODIN) F-35 logistics information system by deploying ODIN hardware to two F-35 squadrons.
Personnel from the JPO, Lockheed Martin, and local squadron maintenance crews completed the installation of new computer hardware called the ODIN Base Kit (OBK) July 16 at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California, in support of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125, and Aug. 6 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, in support of the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron (TES).
These are the first of 14 scheduled OBK deployments from July 2021 through early 2022.

:cussing:
Upgrades in missile technology over the past several years have made the F-35 less survivable than previously hoped, the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Aug. 31 as he pushed for more investment in smaller, unmanned platforms.
Speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Brookings Institution, Rep. Adam Smith (D.-Wash) was quick to note that the F-35 remains more survivable than other fighters “by quite a bit,” pointing to the F-16 for comparison.
“But it’s also got some environments that it’s not going to be able to get into because of how much missile technology has improved since we started building the thing,” Smith said.
Lockheed Martin, the maker of the stealthy fifth-generation fighter, claims the F-35 is the “most lethal, survivable, and connected fighter jet in the world.”
The Air Force plans to buy 1,763 of the aircraft, which would make it the service’s largest fleet.
Smith, on the other hand, has made no secret of his displeasure with the F-35 program.
In March, he referred to the fighter as a “rathole,” and in June, he slammed the program’s high sustainment costs.
