[smilie=mylove.gif]
Dassault Aviation Chairman Eric Trappier said Thursday he had written a letter of congratulations to Justin Trudeau, the newly elected Canadian prime minister, and pitched an offer of the Rafale fighter if Ottawa pulled out of the US F-35 program.
“We have to wait and see what he decides now he is in office,” Trappier told the association of aerospace journalists.
“I wrote a letter to congratulate him and to remind him that if the F-35 were canceled, the Rafale would be potentially proposed."
The letter was sent in the last two days.

Luke Issues New F-35 Helmet .....

Brian Everstine (10/26/2015)

Luke AFB, Ariz., issued the first next-generation F-35 helmet to a Norwegian Air Force pilot in training, according to a base release ..... http://www.luke.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123461403
The new helmet, built by Rockwell Collins, features upgrades in night vision, optics, and liquid-crystal displays, according to the Air Force.
The helmet is designed to project the aircraft’s heads-up display information onto a screen directly in front of the pilot, including information such as horizon, airspeed, altitude, and weapons.
"I think the helmet is going to be an important factor in enhancing my situational awareness," said Norwegian Air Force Maj. Morten Hanche, 62nd Fighter Squadron training pilot, the first Luke pilot to receive the helmet on Oct. 16.
"I don't have to look around. I can glance with my eyes and get the info I need."
The new helmet was first delivered from Rockwell Collins to the Air Force in August and is expected to enter low-rate production next year ..... http://www.airforcemag.com/DRArchive/Pa ... elmet.aspx

Turkish missile maker Roketsan is hoping to fly its SOM-J cruise missile for the first time “possibly late next year” ahead of planned integration with the F-16 Block 40 by 2018 and the Lockheed Martin F-35 sometime later.
SOM-J is essentially a scaled-down version of Roketsan’s SOM (stand off missile), and sized for internal carriage on the F-35.
SOM is already integrated with Turkey’s F-16 Block 40 and F-4E fighter jets, whereas the semi-armour-piercing SOM-J will become the nation’s cruise missile of choice once Ankara introduces the low-observable F-35 into its combat force.

Lockheed F-35 Leadership Changes .....

John A. Tirpak (10/30/2015)

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program manager since 2011, Lorraine Martin, is shifting to a newly created job, and will be succeeded by Jeff Babione, who has been her deputy since 2013, the company announced Thursday ..... http://lockheedmartin.com/us/news/press ... eader.html
Martin will be deputy executive vice president for Mission Systems and Training, where she’ll help integrate Lockheed’s acquisition of Sikorsky helicopters, company spokesman Mike Rein said.
Babione has been with Lockheed for 23 years, having come from the F-16/F-22 Integrated Fighter Group, where he was responsible “for all aspects of the development, manufacturing and sustainment” of those two aircraft.
Rein said the move is part of “natural succession planning” at the company.
Babione will oversee the completion of the system development and demonstration effort, the sharp increase in F-35 production coming in the next two years, and initial operational capability for the Air Force.
Lt. Gen. Chris Bogdan, the Pentagon’s JSF program executive officer, congratulated Martin in a statement released by the program office.
“Since 2013, we worked together … to deliver a world-class weapon system,” Bogdan said, and “improve government and contractor relations.”
Babione, Bogdan said, “has the skills and leadership necessary to continue the advancements we’re making in the F-35 program. Our team looks forward to work with Jeff and his new deputy, Fred Ross, in their new roles.”
Ross, like Martin, has experience with the C-130 program and comes directly from being vice president of supply chain management.

Despite the Lockheed Martin F-35 programme’s “unique relationship with Israel,” the country has not been granted unfettered access to every component on the 33 aircraft it intends to purchase.
Tel Aviv is demanding much from the joint programme office (JPO), including a local maintenance, repair and overhaul facility and pilot and maintainer training with full-motion simulators, even though those types of capabilities are being centralised at planned regional F-35 centres in America, Asia and Europe.

http://www.luke.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123462826
"Every aspect of today's operation was a multinational effort," said 61st Fighter Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Michael Gette.
One of the Italian pilots flew a Royal Australian Air Force F-35A, coached by an Air Force Reserve Command instructor pilot, launched by a mix of contractor and RAAF maintainers, according to Luke.
"It was a great example of how all the partner nations are cooperating to make this program a reality and shows how Luke ... is becoming the international training hub for the F-35," added Gette.
Student pilots began training sorties at Luke in March, and the 56th Fighter Wing stood up a second F-35 training squadron early this summer.
The RAAF launched international training at Luke, and Norway's first F-35A is slated to arrive at the schoolhouse, this year.
Luke will also eventually host Canadian, Dutch, and Turkish students, and a fleet of 144 Lightning IIs.

F-35 Buy Number Still Solid .....

John A. Tirpak (11/12/2015)

The Air Force’s plan to acquire 1,763 F-35s is still good … for now, Air Combat Command chief Gen. Hawk Carlisle told defense reporters in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.
The Air Force is not ignoring Congress’ request for an updated assessment of how many F-35s the service needs, but delays that have been pushing the buy “to the right” may ultimately affect how many are bought, he noted.
“We certainly owe an answer back to Congress,” Carlisle said, but other things are coloring the decision.
“One of the things we have done in recent years is budget reality … we haven’t reached the numbers that we wanted to buy at the time, which has spread the buy out to the right, which has caused added problems.”
Though Carlisle didn’t say so, those “added problems” could be derailing the service’s carefully constructed timeline of when it will acquire the many things on its shopping list, such as the Long-Range Strike Bomber, JSTARS recap, T-X trainer, and KC-46 tanker.
“As we look to the future and what we’re going to do, I think there is a decision to be made on how many F-35s we’re going to buy,” Carlisle said.
However, he added, “It’s way too early to make that decision when we’re not even” at the point of declaring initial operational capability yet.

Sarà una 'piattaforma aperta' ..... ma quando ?
F-35 Open Mission Systems ?

John A. Tirpak (11/12/2015)

The F-35 will eventually be an Open Mission Systems platform, Air Combat Command chief Gen. Hawk Carlisle said Tuesday.
Speaking with defense reporters in Washington, D.C., Carlisle said OMS - which allows new sensors, software packages and other upgrades to a platform to be competed because the system architecture will allow modular improvements - is becoming “critical to just about everything we do in the … Air Force.”
The typical time to buy new gear is seven years, he said, but Moore’s Law makes new gear obsolete within 18 months, “so we have to get to a point where we can upgrade at a pace that is reasonable with the development of capability.”
When systems are “proprietary, it make it very difficult to upgrade,” Carlisle said.
He said he frequently talks to Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan, F-35 program director, and “the folks at Lockheed,” including outgoing F-35 program manager Lorraine Martin and incoming PM Jeff Babione, as well as Lockheed Martin Aerospace Executive Vice President Orlando Carvalho, “and we’re looking at all those things. In fact, we had a meeting … not too long ago,” attended by USAF acquisition chief William LaPlante, “and Lockheed basically came out straight and said, ‘We’re going to Open Mission Systems.’ So they’re helping us and they understand our desire to get there.”
A Lockheed Martin spokesman, however, said that while OMS is a goal on the F-35, “it’s way down the line” and “there are no details, yet.”

The Royal Norwegian Air Force's first two F-35A Lightning IIs arrived at Luke AFB, Ariz., on Nov. 10, joining the burgeoning fleet at the international schoolhouse there, Luke officials announced.
The aircraft joined the 62nd Fighter Squadron, Luke's second F-35 training squadron.
"Today, as we accept our first partner aircraft into the squadron, we are one step closer to fulfilling our mission of training the best F-35 pilots from around the world," 62nd FS Commander Lt. Col. Gregory Frana said in a release ..... http://www.luke.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123463115
The first Italian air force trainee pilots began F-35 flying at Luke earlier this month and "we have been working closely with our Norwegian partners to ensure that we are ready to receive and fly the most technologically advanced aircraft the world has ever seen," added Frana.
Luke currently hosts a total of 32 F-35s, including Royal Australian Air Force jets, and will eventually operate a total of 144 Lightning IIs, training pilots from Canada, the Netherlands, and Turkey as well.

Crack in F-35C Found During Testing .....

Jennifer Hlad (11/18/2015)

Inspectors testing the durability of the Navy’s F-35C have found a small crack in one of the aircraft’s 13 wing spars, the joint program office said.
The crack was found after tests simulating more than 20 years of operational flying, and does not affect current F-35C flying operations or the Navy’s ability to reach initial operational capability, program office spokesman Joe DellaVedova told Air Force Magazine.
The finding also does not affect the F-35A or F-35B, which have smaller wings than the C variant, DellaVedova said.
Government and industry teams are working on an engineering solution now, he said, and estimate that modifying the aircraft by about half a pound will fix the issue.
The Air Force also recently announced that the F-35A is undergoing electromagnetic effects tests at the Benefield Anechoic Facility at Edwards AFB, Calif.
Testing ensures the jet’s electronic components don’t interfere with each other, and the successful completion of the test will allow the program office to sign off on verification of military electromagnetic standards, according to a release (*).
The verification is necessary before the initial operational capability testing can begin with Block 3i software, according to the release.

PACAF F-35 Integration Office .....

John A. Tirpak (11/19/2015)

Pacific Air Forces chief Gen. Lori Robinson has set up an “F-35 Integration Office” for her command, even though deployment of the fighter in the Pacific is still potentially years away.
Robinson, speaking with defense writers in Washington, D.C., said the office will build on the experience of flying the stealthy F-22 in the Pacific theater, and begin laying the groundwork for a joint employment doctrine, since the Marine Corps, Australia, Japan, Korea, and potentially other Pacific region partners will also operate the jet.
The Marine Corps has already signed on to participate with the office, as it will be first in theater to deploy the F-35, she said.
