LM, nel 2020, mancherà il bersaglio ... #-o
Lockheed Martin will likely miss its production target of 141 examples of the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter in 2020.
The company’s suppliers are not able to deliver parts on time, a disruption caused by the coronavirus.
As a result, the number of F-35s produced this year could fall by 18 to 24 units below the 141 aircraft goal, Lockheed said on 19 May (*).
The manufacturer is planning for a three-month production slowdown at its Fort Worth, Texas facility and has reached an agreement with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) to operate under a temporary alternating work schedule for line employees.

An F-35A from the 58th Fighter Squadron crash-landed late May 19 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., according to the 33rd Fighter Wing.
The pilot safely ejected.
The crash marks Eglin’s second recent fifth-generation jet mishap, following the May 15 crash of an F-22 assigned to the base.
The F-35A crashed around 9:30 p.m. after a routine night training sortie, the fighter wing said on Facebook.
The pilot was in stable condition and went to Eglin’s 96th Medical Group for evaluation and monitoring.
No civilian property was damaged in the crash, which will be formally investigated.

A proposito di danni riportati in occasione di voli a velocità supersonica ...
The F-35 pilot who flew the two infamous supersonic missions that inflicted damage to the jet’s stealth coating and tail wants to set the record straight.
When pilots conduct supersonic intercepts or find themselves needing to race away from an enemy during combat, they will be able to take the F-35 to its furthest limits of speed and altitude — most likely without any permanent damage to the aircraft, he told Defense News in an exclusive interview.
Last June, Defense News revealed that the Pentagon had instituted time limits on the number of seconds the F-35B short-takeoff-and-landing variant and the F-35C carrier variant could spend at supersonic speeds.
Those limits were imposed after two separate tests in 2011 where the "B" model incurred “bubbling [and] blistering” of its stealth coating and the "C" model suffered “thermal damage” to the tailboom and horizontal tail, according to documents exclusively obtained by Defense News.

F-35 ... l' Italia va avanti ...
Italy’s defense minister has thrown his weight behind the F-35 program to counter demands from within his coalition government to suspend purchases of the aircraft to help Italy’s coronavirus-stricken economy.
Lorenzo Guerini said he “confirmed that the program would continue,” after calls from Italy’s Five Star party to halt F-35 purchases for a year as Italy seeks cash to help rebound from the virus, which has killed 33,000 in Italy.
In an interview with Italian publication Formiche (*), Guerini said defense spending was often slashed during economic crises, but claimed cuts to Italy’s planned 90-aircraft buy would hurt high-tech jobs and damage an industrial sector which “offers very significant economic returns to our nation.”

A series of photographs released by the F-35 Joint Program Office on June 22 show that the U.S. Air Force’s Lockheed Martin F-35A has been undergoing Dual Capable Aircraft (DCA) tests.
DCA refers to the ability to deliver both conventional and nuclear weaponry.
In the nuclear case that involves the new B61-12 weapon that is currently in the early stages of production.
The F-35A is expected to introduce its DCA capability in early 2023 with the Block 4 software upgrade.

Senate Republican Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) has a novel approach to solving some of the U.S.’s problems with fellow NATO member Turkey: Sell us your Russian S-400 air defense system, and you can come back into the F-35 program.
Thune inserted language into the Senate’s Fiscal 2021 National Defense Authorization Act bill to allow the Army to buy the S-400, also known as the Triumf, from Turkey, using missile procurement money.
In exchange, Turkey, which was expelled from the F-35 program over its purchase of the S-400, could re-enter the program and resume providing more than 100 parts and sub-assemblies for the fighter, and also serve as a regional repair hub for it.

The new coating was already applied to US-built aircraft since 2017, but this seems to be the first time it’s applied to aircraft assembled internationally.
As you may already know, six Italian Air Force’s F-35As are currently deployed in Iceland for the second time in support of NATO Icelandic Air Policing.
A few days ago, two F-35s performed a Tango Scramble (or Training Scramble) to intercept a Challenger CL-604 of the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) on its way to Greenland, which acted as a “zombie” for this training mission.
“Zombie” is the term used by Quick Reaction Alert pilots to refer to the unidentified aircraft that they are going to intercept.
The RDAF later posted a photo of the two fighter jets flying in formation with the Challenger at the end of the training event on their social media channels.
What’s interesting about this photo is that we can see side by side both the new and the old coating of the F-35.
To be more precise, the aircraft in the background is the one with the older livery, while the other one in the foreground is the F-35 with the new livery.

Turkey’s expulsion from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program is overdue and should be expedited, regardless of the cost, according to a July 6 letter from four senators to Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper.
The lawmakers say delays in kicking Turkey out of the F-35 supply chain are making the U.S. look weak and are hampering diplomatic efforts to restrain Russian arms sales while economic sanctions are in place.
Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) aired their frustration that the Pentagon isn’t complying with the sense of Congress that Turkey’s role as a supplier of F-35 parts, which the Pentagon agreed would end early this year, will actually continue for another two years.

This is the vision for the Lockheed Martin F-35 program in 10 years:

A worldwide fleet of more than 2,000 fighters is in service with a still-growing list of customers.
Sales are spurred by a unit procurement price and cost per flight hour equal to or only slightly higher than a fourth-generation fighter.
Yet the newly modernized Block 4 fleet of F-35s boasts 25 times more computing power than the version of the aircraft operating today, enabling the software-based onboard fusion engine to mine data from a far more advanced set of active and passive sensors.
As the situational awareness in cockpit expands, the pilots have a variety of new weapon options available: the ability to carry six Lockheed Martin AIM-260 or Raytheon AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles internally; a maritime strike capability of the Joint Strike Missile; and the use of new long-range strike missiles, such as the future Stand-in Attack Weapon (SiAW) internally and possibly a hypersonic cruise missile carried externally.
Meanwhile, the Lot 22 F-35 rolling off Lockheed’s assembly line in 2030 also can access a new class of air-launched attritable stores that add vast new sensing capacity, multiply weapon loadouts and, depending on the mission, serve as kinetic options themselves.
The F-35’s role has already evolved from standard counterair and strike missions.
The Army and Navy now use the F-35’s sensor data remotely to guide their interceptors to knock down incoming missiles.
The Air Force’s decentralized command-and-control system relies on the F-35’s processing power, sensor data and communication hooks to orchestrate a wider attack in all domains.
F-35 pilots still train to perform traditional fighter missions, but the role the aircraft plays defies the vocabulary of the Air Force’s designation system.

Il peso della pandemia ... :nurse:
The end of F-35 operational testing and declaration of full-rate production will likely come in March 2021 - three months past the extension Pentagon acquisition and logistics czar Ellen M. Lord gave the program last year.
Lord extended operational testing of the F-35 last October from December 2019 to January 2021, in order to incorporate the fighter into the Joint Simulation Environment, which virtually pits various combinations of U.S. capabilities against foreign militaries.
The system is designed to find the optimum numbers of various systems to acquire and deploy.
“I am confident that we are going to meet the March date,” Lord told reporters on Aug. 20.
“We have the entire government/industry team focused on that.”
However, she acknowledged there “have been setbacks within the JSE from COVID,” because it requires “a very close working environment.”
Lord said she will visit the Joint Simulation Environment at Naval Air Station Patuxent River next week with Robert F. Behler, Director of Operational Test and Evaluation, to ensure the team “has all the resources they need,” Lord said.
