The possibility of a “bridge tanker” competition to cover the gap between the end of the current KC-46 program and a future U.S. Air Force refueler is looking less likely as the service continues to refine its requirements for the future fleet.
The service in July 2021 kicked off the KC-Y program, with the goal of buying 140-160 tankers starting in 2029 after the last of the 179 Boeing tankers (KC-X) are delivered and before an Advanced Air Refueling (KC-Z) contract in the mid-2030s.

Pegasus batte un record ...
A KC-46 Pegasus crewed by Airmen from the 22nd Air Refueling Wing flew for more than 24 hours, establishing a new Air Mobility Command record and covering more than 9,000 miles, the Air Force announced.
The 24.2-hour, record-breaking flight - which lasted from May 5 to 6 - was intended to gather data on the “feasibility, limitations, potential risks as well as unique benefits of the KC-46 for long-duration flights” ...
Six pilots, three boom operators, a photojournalist, and a physician assistant took part in the flight, with two-pilot teams swapping out every four hours while a backup pilot team gathered data and took notes.
The physician assistant onboard monitored the aircrew to ensure their safety and the safety of the mission.

Only five U.S. aircraft have yet to be operationally certified to refuel from the KC-46, but the Pegasus can still tank up those aircraft in an emergency, according to Air Mobility Command.
The last certifications will be driven by test events and not a calendar schedule, AMC said.
While AMC announced June 2 that some 97 percent of U.S. Transportation Command air refueling taskings can be met by the KC-46, the tanker is not yet certified for the A-10 attack jet; B-2 bomber; CV-22 tiltorotor special operations turboprop; E-4 flying command post, and MC-130H special operations tanker.
“We’re continuing to work through operational certifications” on the last five airplanes, “but they face no technical hurdles,” an AMC spokeswoman said.
The only jet that doesn’t apply to is the A-10, which is restricted because of the KC-46’s “stiff boom” deficiency, she noted.
The issue affects lightweight aircraft such as the A-10 being unable to deliver sufficient power to compress the boom enough to maintain refueling position.

A KC-46 Pegasus passed fuel to a CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor midair over Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., in June, a further expansion of the tanker’s ability to refuel USAF aircraft, according to an Air Force release.
The KC-46, from the 349th Air Refueling Squadron, refueled a CV-22 Osprey from the 20th Special Operations Squadron, using the centerline hose and drogue system used for helicopters, Navy/Marine Corps aircraft and foreign types.
Most USAF aircraft use the boom-type refueling system.
Air Mobility Command recently announced that the new tanker is certified for about 88 percent of all the aircraft types it needs to be able to refuel.

The Pentagon has put out a call for blended wing body aircraft concepts that could be applied to future military tanker and cargo aircraft as well as commercial aircraft, according to a solicitation posted by the Defense Innovation Unit.
The Pentagon wants “concepts of design of an advanced aircraft configuration that provides at least 30 percent more aerodynamic efficiency than the Boeing 767 and Airbus A330 families of commercial and military aircraft, enabling operational advantages such as increased range, loiter time, and offload capabilities,” according to the solicitation.
The Boeing 767 and Airbus A330 are the bases for the KC-46 and KC-30 Multi-Role Tanker Transport, the only strategic tankers now in production.
An Air Force Research Laboratory spokesperson said the solicitation “is not connected to the KC-Y program” but did not say whether it’s related to the KC-Z, which the Air Force has not defined but could be a stealthy aerial refueling aircraft.
The solicitation did not mention stealth or low observability, but BWB-type aircraft, as “flying wings,” would likely have a much lower radar cross section than traditional types.

The U.S. Air Force and Boeing are finalizing a new schedule for installation of an improved Remote Vision System (RVS) on the KC-46A tanker following the critical design review (CDR) for the overhaul.
Additionally, a software-only update to the system has been implemented and is being installed as of mid-July, the service says.
The Air Force and Boeing on June 28-29 conducted the CDR for the required upgrade of the RVS - a full replacement of cameras, sensors and the boom operator’s work station in the 767-based refueler first announced in April 2020.
The CDR followed an extended preliminary design review that included a dispute between the two sides on the need to install new panoramic cameras as part of the RVS.

The Air Force’s nascent KC-Z program, aimed at developing a next-generation family of systems for aerial refueling, will look to launch its analysis-of-alternatives study in 2024, years earlier than originally planned, a top acquisition official said Aug. 11.
Originally, the analysis of alternatives for KC-Z was set for “maybe in the 2030s,” Paul Waugh, program executive officer for mobility and training aircraft, told reporters at the Life Cycle Industry Days conference.
Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, however, directed that work on the next-gen tanker start much more quickly, “so we moved it to the left,” Waugh said.
That work will now begin in 2023, Waugh said, as the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center teams with Air Mobility Command on “pre-analysis of alternatives,” followed by the official analysis the next year, helping to “inform where KC-Z, the whole family of systems, goes,” Waugh said.
Waugh’s characterization of KC-Z as a family of systems follows on a request for information issued by AFLCMC that referred to a new Advanced Aerial Refueling Family of Systems program.
That RFI emphasized technologies like survivability, autonomy, and interoperability, and Waugh echoed the RFI in stating that the tech developed for KC-Z could eventually make its way onto the rest of the tanker fleet.
“Some of that technology may make its way into KC-Y or KC-46, or KC-135. It just depends on what it is and where it’s at,” Waugh said.

A KC-46A Pegasus tanker jet gave a group of congressional staffers an impromptu lesson in airborne emergencies during an introductory flight this week.
Two of the Air Force’s new tankers took off Tuesday with a group of 16 staffers who work for New Hampshire’s congressional delegation - Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan and Reps. Annie Kuster and Chris Pappas.
The guests were onboard for a firsthand look at the KC-46s that belong to the New Hampshire Air National Guard’s 157th Air Refueling Wing.
Pease Air National Guard Base in southeastern New Hampshire was the Air Guard’s first to receive the KC-46, which replaced its older KC-135 Stratotanker planes from 2019 to 2021.
When one of the airplanes demonstrated its ability to refuel other jets, the cable used to retract the fuel boom into the fuselage snapped.
So, pilots diverted to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, and landed the KC-46 with its boom still outstretched.

“Emergency services from the 305th Air Mobility Wing responded and safely secured the scene, with no fire or injuries to crew or passengers,” Pease said in a statement provided to Air Force Times on Thursday.

The Air Force has awarded a pair of contracts to Boeing potentially worth more than $3.1 billion combined for 19 KC-46s - four for Israel - the Pentagon announced Aug. 31.
The larger of the two deals is worth roughly $2.2 billion and will go toward the KC-46’s Production Lot 8, made up of 15 of the aerial refuelers, the contract award states.
Work will take place in Boeing’s Seattle facility and is expected to be completed by Nov. 30, 2025.
While those jets will go to the U.S. Air Force, the other contract calls for four tankers to be delivered to Israel.
The cost cannot exceed $927 million.

Tutti ... meno uno ...
The Air Force on Monday said the KC-46A Pegasus refueling tanker is now cleared to carry out all refueling missions around the world on all aircraft - with one exception.
In a roundtable with reporters at the Air Force Association’s Air Space Cyber conference here, Air Mobility Command head Gen. Mike Minihan said he signed off on Friday on the final Interim Capability Release, opening up the Air Force’s 60 KC-46s to worldwide deployments.
Minihan said that includes the B-2 and U.S. Strategic Command missions.
However, AMC clarified later the KC-46 still cannot refuel the A-10 Warthog due to a problem with the stiffness of its refueling boom and won’t be able to until the issue is fixed.
The Air Force in 2019 awarded Boeing a contract worth up to $55.5 million to redesign the boom; that effort is still in the works.

The Air Force plans to complete testing of a full-scale blended wing body advanced cargo/tanker aircraft within four years, according to the department’s new Climate Action Plan.
The demonstrator could be a prototype for a future operational mobility aircraft or family of aircraft, and the plan suggests the Air Force may skip the so-called “bridge tanker” acquisition.
The Air Force Climate Action Plan, released Oct. 5, notes a number of fuel-saving efficiency modifications for existing aircraft, such as winglets, vortex generators, compressor blade coatings, and more efficient engines.
But one of its “Key Results” planned under fleet modernization is the development and testing “of a full-scale blended wing body prototype, completed by FY27.”
A blended wing body aircraft, as the name implies, is a large flying wing, dispensing with a cylinder-type fuselage and blending the wings directly into the fuselage.
The concept, which is more aerodynamically efficient than a cylinder-type aircraft and boasts a far greater internal volume for fuel and payload, has been explored for decades.
Boeing flew a subscale demonstrator called the X-48, in various configurations, from 2007 to 2013.

KC-46 ... una nuova battuta d'arresto 😱 ...
The troubled KC-46 Pegasus tanker faced yet another setback Oct. 7.
The Air Force said the new Remote Vision System (RVS) 2.0, which will be used to operate the airplane’s refueling boom, will not be available until October 2025.
That is a further 19-month delay from the previous plan the Air Force and Boeing, which makes the airframe and the RVS, agreed upon.
The Air Force and Boeing put the delay down to broad supply chain issues in the economy, though the RVS problem existed long before supply chain troubles came to the fore in the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Our defense industrial base continues to face supply chain issues and we’re seeing effects in the acquisition schedules of technically complex systems,” said Andrew P. Hunter, assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition, technology, and logistics, in a statement disclosing the delay.

Lockheed Martin says it is still pitching its LMXT tanker to the Air Force amid a looming requirements announcement for the KC-Y tanker program.
Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall has cast doubt on whether a KC-Y program would field a wholly new aircraft and has said the program may end up being an upgraded KC-46 Pegasus.
However, the KC-46 and its manufacturer Boeing face growing disquiet over numerous delays and problems with the aircraft.
The KC-Y is the so-called “bridge tanker” envisioned for production between the current KC-46A and a next-generation KC-Z family of aerial refueling systems.
While the company does not yet know what the requirements of the KC-Y will be, Lockheed Martin said the Air Force has expressed possible interest in a “KC-Y plus,” which the company says could be its LMXT.
“We see this airplane as already being in that KC-Y plus scenario - it is already embodying next-generation technologies,” Lockheed Martin’s LMXT director Larry Gallogly told reporters Oct. 25.
“I would certainly say that that’s a potential outcome.”

In volo senza copilota ...
A KC-46 tanker from McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., flew without a co-pilot Oct. 25, part of Air Mobility Command’s push to study limited aircrew operations.
Two flights took place with just a pilot and a boom operator, the 22nd Air Refueling Wing announced in a release.
The first sortie flew a pattern only, while the second accomplished a “full mission profile,” including “takeoff, aerial refueling rendezvous, air refueling on-load, and offload, [and] landing.”
When not engaged in boom operations, the boom operator was in the cockpit with the pilot.
A second instructor pilot was on board during the flights to act as a safety observer, and a second KC-46 with a full crew flew alongside the tanker to provide assistance if needed.

The U.S. Air Force is speeding up plans to look beyond its Boeing C-17 and Lockheed Martin C-5M airlift fleets, announcing that next year it will begin work on new airlift capability, paralleling a similar move for its aerial refueling fleet.
“This coming year, the Department of the Air Force will be working to define the next generation of airlift and tanker capabilities,” Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said during the Airlift/Tanker Association Annual Convention in Aurora, Colorado, on Oct. 28.
Earlier this year, the service said it wanted to accelerate its future KC-Z tanker by moving up pre-analysis of alternatives research to 2023 from a previous projected timeline of 2030.
Kendall says the future airlifter will also need to be moved up as the service studies how it could deliver people and materiel to a war in the Pacific as its bases and logistics hubs come under attack.

Air Mobility Command is investigating a potential Class A mishap involving a KC-46 Pegasus tanker that left the plane’s boom and fuselage damaged in October.
The incident, which occurred Oct. 15, was first reported by Air Force Times (... https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your ... ghter-jet/ ...) after images circulated on social media showing the refueler with a cracked boom and a dented tail cone.
AMC spokesperson Capt. Natasha Mosquera confirmed the details to Air & Space Forces Magazine.
The KC-46 in question belongs to the 305th Air Mobility Wing from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., and was flying back to the base from the United Kingdom when it experienced an “in-flight emergency after experiencing a problem with the refueling system, causing damage to the boom and fuselage,” Mosquera said.
Air Force Times reported that the problem occurred while the KC-46 was refueling an F-15 due to the two planes flying at such different speeds that the boom forcibly broke away from the fighter and hit the KC-46.
Mosquera told Air & Space Forces Magazine that the cause of the problem had not been determined, with an investigation scheduled to conclude in late November.

Upgraded cameras that can support refueling under covert conditions.
A projection display incorporating a curved mirror to create a more immersive experience for boom operators.
Enhanced processing power and new fiber optic cabling.
Boeing lifted the veil from its long-awaited Remote Vision System 2.0, offering a glimpse at enhancements for the KC-46 tanker, even as delivery of the new optical systems remains years away.
Boeing, Air Force, and Collins Aerospace officials shared the vision with a small group of reporters at Boeing’s Everett, Wash., facility this month, divulging a prototype RVS 2.0 display, diagrams detailing the planned system, and side-by-side video comparing the RVS 1.0 and 2.0 cameras.
The video comparison suggests the new camera system overcomes the issues that plagued the original camera system, including blurriness and distortion, a lack of depth perception under certain conditions, and blackouts and whiteouts caused by sudden changes in lighting.

While Boeing and the Air Force inch forward on the new KC-46 Remote Vision System 2.0, they are also making progress on other deficiencies that have thus far limited the aircraft in certain missions.
Boeing is tweaking the design of the actuator at the base of the tanker’s boom so that it will operate with the thrust-limited A-10 Thunderbolt.
The Pentagon Inspector General characterized the problem as a “stiff boom” that “would not extend or retract during flight testing unless subjected to more force” than the A-10 could muster.
Rather than a full “boom redesign,” Boeing KC-46 Program Manager James Burgess said the fix is a new actuator.
Speaking to reporters at Boeing’s Everett, Wash., plant, Burgess explained the challenge this way: The actuator “drives the boom out in the telescope direction, and then when a receiver connects with it, the receiver drives the boom back into sort of a nominal refueling position.”
The original actuator requires about 1,400 pounds of pressure to enable refueling, Burgess said.
But when at high altitude and fully loaded with weapons, the A-10 is “a very thrust-limited receiver aircraft; it had trouble pushing it up to that 1,400 pounds and then keeping it compressed at that force.”

Tutto vero, Paolo, ma, e non è la prima volta, c'è un "però" ...
The Air Force awarded Boeing a $2.2 billion contract for 15 KC-46 tankers, the ninth lot of the aerial refuelers, just days after the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center acknowledged a previously undisclosed deficiency with the aircraft.
The latest purchase order is roughly the same as the Lot 8 order from Aug. 31, 2022.
The number of aircraft is the same, but the cost slightly increased.
Work on the 15 jet aircraft is expected to be completed in 2026.
The KC-46 Pegasus has suffered a stream of deficiencies since its introduction, including ongoing issues with its over-stiff boom and the remote vision system for boom operators.
But the latest deficiency has nothing to do with aerial refueling; instead, the ding is for insufficient documentation for loading cargo on the jets.
The Defense Department’s Office of the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation, disclosed the latest problem in its annual report, which noted that the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center had determined that several “individual cargo-related deficiencies merited generation of a Category I emergency deficiency report against overall KC-46A cargo operations capability.”
An Air Force Life Cycle Management Center spokesperson, responding to questions from Air & Space Forces Magazine, acknowledged the deficiency, but said it had been downgraded to a Category II deficiency in November 2022.
The command did not indicate if that was based on progress toward its resolution or simply a judgment call.

Airbus Defence and Space has received an order from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) for another A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft.
The latest order, when delivered, will increase the size of the Multinational MRTT Fleet (MMF) to 10 aircraft.
The new purchase follows the decision by Belgium to add another 1,100 flight hours of annual usage, requiring a new aircraft to cater for the additional demand.
Belgium has invested a further €265 million ($287 million) in the MMF program, which will raise its total hours allocation to 2,100 by 2027.
“Since the arrival of the first aircraft in 2020, and especially since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the MMF is protecting European sovereignty and showing its capabilities as a multirole tanker,” said Jean Brice Dumont, head of Military Air Systems at Airbus Defence and Space.
“With this new order, NSPA has already acquired one out of four optional MRTTs requested beyond the nine aircraft contracted earlier, demonstrating the level of customer satisfaction.”

These capabilities will further enhance the data and communications connectivity the KC-46A provides to joint and allied forces for battlespace situational awareness.
“This upgrade demonstrates long-term investment from Boeing and the Air Force,” said James Burgess, vice president and KC-46 program manager.
