State calmi ..... non c'è alcuna fretta .....
Time for Air Dominance .....

John A. Tirpak (4/10/2015)

The Air Force’s forecast that the F-22 will last into the 2040s helps explain why the service seems in no rush to launch a sixth-generation fighter program.
Reporters have been peppering the Air Force and DOD leadership with queries as to why there’s no F-22 replacement in the budget, since it took 20 years to develop the Raptor from drawing board to initial operating capability, and the F-22 was thought to be retiring in about 2035.
The Pentagon and USAF leaders have responded that they are undertaking an “Air Dominance 2030” study that will analyze such technologies as hypersonics and directed energy to determine what mix of attributes will give the US air superiority/air dominance 15 years hence.
Apparently, the clock will not run out on the Raptor before its replacement capability is in hand.
Asked about a sixth-generation fighter at the AFA Air Warfare Symposium in February, Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh said, “I don’t know what it looks like,” and “it may not be a single platform,” but a family of systems, not unlike the service’s concept for long-range strike.

Togliere i piloti ?
Non pensateci neanche ..... [-X
And the Air Force plans to increase its reliance on unmanned aircraft to remove worrying "about the limitations of the human body," Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh said.
But, he added, pilots will be needed in the cockpits of most of the service's combat fleet for the foreseeable future.
Even the next-generation stealth bomber that someday might be optionally manned will start out with pilots in its cockpit.

Andiamoci piano ..... prima di metterla da parte .....
Lockheed Martin says it is too early to discount highly maneuverable fighter aircraft designs for future US Air Force and Navy warplanes, even as advances in long-range air-to-air missile technology makes dogfights less likely.
According to the company’s director of advanced air dominance and unmanned systems strategy, Bob Ruszkowski, the US must be prepared to fight outnumbered, and air-to-air missiles can be countered.

In a departure from the dual-service F-35 effort, the Pentagon’s sixth-generation fighter jet likely won’t be common between the US Air Force and the US Navy, a top Air Force general said Friday.
The next generation of fighters likely will be designed as separate aircraft across the services because the Air Force and Navy will have unique mission requirements in future decades, said Lt. Gen. James “Mike” Holmes, Air Force deputy chief of staff for plans and requirements.
The sixth-generation fighter jet will replace the Air Force’s F-22s and the Navy’s F/A-18s in the 2030s.

Intanto ..... in Europa .....
Britain and France will begin full-scale development of an unmanned Future Combat Air System (FCAS) that could replace current-generation European fighters in the 2030 time frame.
The two nations will commit £1.54 billion ($2.1 billion) to the joint effort, according to an agreement announced on March 3.
The FCAS builds on Britain’s development of the Taranis unmanned combat air vehicle and the pan-European Neuron UCAV project led by France’s Dassault Aviation.
Britain and France signed an agreement at the Farnborough Airshow in July 2014 to conduct a two-year feasibility study of the FCAS, which has been discussed as a potential far-term replacement for fourth-generation Dassault Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon fighters.

The US Air Force has no interest in restarting production of the Lockheed Martin F-22, partly because it's too expensive and because it wants to move quickly on a next-generation fighter.

A sixth-generation fighter would appropriately enter the force circa 2045, said Rob Weiss, head of Lockheed Martin’s “Skunk Works” advanced projects division.
----- ----- ----- ----- -----
The sixth-gen jet would have advanced propulsion and sensors, but likely wouldn’t be hypersonic, he allowed, and would probably not enter service “for 30 or 40 years,” with a program not even getting launched for another decade or so.

Lt Gen James “Mike” Holmes, USAF deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements, says his team is moving away from terms like “fighter” and “next-generation” and will instead look at completely different ways of doing air warfare in the future.
His personal ambition would be to have an “operationally representative configuration” of this future air superiority network in place by 2025.
The service has even delayed by one year its F-X or Next-Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) analysis of alternatives to avoid ending up with requirements for another generation of fighter.
Fonte .....USAF backs off sixth-gen 'fighter' in quest for air supremacy

Daily Report (AFA) .....
Don’t Call it “Sixth Gen” .....

John A. Tirpak (4/8/2016)

There’s probably a new fighter-like airplane in the Air Force’s future, but it won’t be the sole answer to achieving air superiority, senior service planners said Thursday.
Speaking at an AFA-sponsored, Air Force breakfast in Arlington, Va., Lt. Gen. Mike Holmes, USAF’s strategic planner, revealed that a year-long “Air Superiority 2030” study concluded that a heavily networked and space-dependent “system of systems” approach is the way to go to keep ahead of adversaries who will soon have all the tricks and technologies USAF has now.
The key element probably won’t be a successor to the F-22, though.
In fact, Holmes and Col. Alex Grynkewich, who headed the study, said they discourage use of the term “sixth generation” to describe the new aircraft, lest people think of it as a mere successor to existing systems.
It will be one element in a broader system that will feature cheap, quasi-disposable drones built and fielded in large numbers; enhancements of today’s “roll-back” and standoff capabilities aimed at penetrating heavily defended airspace; space systems delivering connectivity, navigation, and targeting; and rapid “prioritized technology insertion” into all existing systems.
Grynkewich said the study indicated long-range and higher payloads will be key for a new platform.
While something like the new B-21 bomber will be one alternative looked at for air superiority, he said “speed and agility” were found to “still have value” in air combat of the 2030s and beyond.

Forse.

In its quest to dominate the air battlefield of the future, the US Air Force may look to replace the traditional fighter jet with a network of integrated systems disaggregated across multiple platforms.
The Air Force on Thursday rolled out the initial findings of a team tasked last year to explore options for maintaining air superiority in the future battle space.
The group, the Air Superiority 2030 Enterprise Capability Collaboration Team, found that the best path forward is developing a “family of systems” to address the range of threats in a highly contested environment.
As near-peer adversaries like Russia and China continue to close the capability gap, building long-range missiles, anti-satellite and anti-aircraft weapons designed to foil US forces’ ability to penetrate, the Air Force must find new ways to dominate the air.

Un futuro ancora pieno di incognite .....
..... more and more countries are getting fighters, radars, and surface-to-air missiles that can reliably shoot down American planes.
In the direst scenario, Air Force fighters simply won’t survive over enemy territory long enough to make any difference during a major war.
In that case, the penetrating counterair system, or PCA, might not be a fighter jet as we currently understand it.
Instead, it could be a radar-evading drone whose main job is to slip undetected into enemy air space and use sophisticated sensors to detect enemy planes - and then pass that targeting data via satellite back to other U.S. forces.
“A node in the network,” is how the strategy document describes the penetrating system’s main job.
The Air Force could start work on the penetrating counterair system in 2017, according to the new air-superiority plan.
The document proposes that this possible stealth drone could team up with an “arsenal plane” - an old bomber or transport plane modified to carry potentially hundreds of long-range missiles.

The development of future combat aircraft – fifth- or sixth-generation fighters and unmanned combat air vehicles – is at the forefront of military planning.
But aside from the platforms themselves, a new generation of weapons is also in the pipeline to add greater precision and lethality at increased stand-off ranges.
Combat types entering operations now, such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, already have an upgrade plan in place to add ever-more sophisticated munitions over the life of the aircraft, but work is also under way to explore future concepts.

Since the arrival of the high-bypass turbofan almost 50 years ago, engineers have made huge strides in jet engine efficiency without altering the basic architecture.
Two air flows of constant volume either bypass or enter a core section.
The core combusts a mixture of compressed air and fuel to generate thermal energy, which is then converted to supply some of the aircraft’s thrust and most of the power.
For combat aircraft in the mid-2030s, that basic architecture is not going to work, according to the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).
Plans to insert laser weapons into future fighters and armed drones will overwhelm power and thermal management capacity.
Ever-growing range and endurance standards require another step change in fuel efficiency for thrust, while advances in ground-based air defences will only increase demand for instant acceleration and nimble manoeuvring.
“In some ways, you’re going to ask the engine to do things they haven’t been asked to do before,” says Chuck Cross, the AFRL’s chief of the Turbine Engine Division.

I laser ?
While the Pentagon continues to pursue directed-energy weaponry, the building’s top weapons buyer wants to temper expectations.
Frank Kendall told reporters this week that 30 years of work on laser arms have led him to conclude such systems are not the “panacea” they sometimes are made out to be.
“They could be useful if they get to a level of both power, [transmission], and size, weight and power that are manageable,” he said, “but we’re not at the point where we can decide we’re going to put lasers in the force.”

Il successore del Raptor .....

Dave Majumdar intervista il colonnello Tom Coglitore, capo dello Air Superiority Core Function Team dello Air Combat Command .....

The U.S. Air Force is in the process of completing its initial research on a next-generation air superiority capability to replace the Boeing F-15C Eagle and Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor fighters.
Once such research is completed, the service will embark on an 18-month analysis of alternatives (AOA) starting this coming January to determine exactly what kind of capabilities it will need to gain and maintain control over the skies in the post-2030 threat environment.
By then — in the year 2035 — the stealthy F-22 will be 30 years old while most the F-15C fleet will be more than 50 years old.
Thus, while the Air Force has not made any decisions on what a future air superiority fighter might look like, the service says that the so-called Penetrating Counter-Air (PCA) capability will be designed to meet threats that an upgraded F-22 and F-15 fleet cannot.
“We understand what the threat is going to be like in the future,” said Col. Tom Coglitore, chief of Air Combat Command’s Air Superiority Core Function Team in an interview with The National Interest.

While some have called PCA the air force’s next-generation fighter, top USAF officials have eschewed the term “sixth generation,” says Brig. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, team lead for the air force’s 2030 air superiority study, in an interview with FlightGlobal.
The ECCT has all but settled on a fighter designation, though Grynkewich remains cautious about characterising the PCA effort as another fighter jet recapitalisation.
Although the USAF is struggling with a smaller fleet of F-22s, upgrades on the the Raptor and the block 4 upgrade on the F-35 push the need for replacement fighters several years out.
Grynkewich does not foresee air-to-ground as PCA’s primary role, indicating the service is not billing the platform as an F-15E or F-35 replacement.
“We’ll probably call it a fighter, it will probably have an F designation,” he says.
“But what we want to do is open up our aperture and think a little bit more broadly about attributes.”

E Boeing presenta il suo 'concetto' .....
Boeing is out with new concept art for the U.S. Air Force’s next-generation fighter jet, a sleek, tail-less design featuring conformal engine inlets and what looks like a manned cockpit.
The latest image, provided to Aviation Week Nov. 1, looks more like a fighter-bomber than a pure fighter.
The tail-less airframe, thin swept wings and conformal shaping suggest a stealthy, penetrating aircraft that may be able to fly supersonic.
The silhouette of a pilot inside the cockpit indicates Boeing is banking on the Air Force sticking with at least an optionally manned platform for the future capability.

Il 2017 sarà un anno chiave .....
2017 could be a decisive year for the Air Force’s future fighter jet, as the service begins multiple efforts that will help determine the requirements of its so-called Penetrating Counter Air capability.
The service’s current plan hinges on several lines of effort.
The Air Force is preparing to kick off an 18-month analysis of alternatives this January that will explore a handful of fighter-jet concepts and evaluate their ability to meet future threats, said Col. Thomas Coglitore, chief of ACC’s ‎air superiority core function and next-generation air dominance working groups.
The AOA group is working hand-in-glove with another team at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, that is responsible for formulating an acquisition strategy and will conduct risk-reduction activities, he said.
