July 16/14: Phase 2 Testing. The MC-27J Praetorian Phase 2 has completed the first phase of ground and flight testing, with the support of the Italian Air Force (ITAF). The ITAF MC-27J was modified with an L-3 Wescam MX-15Di Electro-Optical and Infrared Turret, and Alenia says that the tests “exceeded all test objectives and demonstrated the accuracy of ATK’s side-mounted GAU-23 30mm cannon.”

This is good news for the ItAF, but not enough for Alenia. The truth is, their product’s current capability is considerably behind Jordan’s smaller Airbus AC-235 gunship, which can use guided weapons and has already been delivered. Jordan is now working with Airbus and ATK to create a larger AC-295 that uses the same systems, creating an even closer peer competitor.
The candidates will likely include Alenia with the C-27J, Antonov with the An-32 and Airbus Defence & Space with the C-295.
However, a decision on whether Alenia can bid is pending, after the controversial sale of AW101 helicopters by fellow Finmeccanica subsidiary AgustaWestland was halted.
There are also concerns about Antonov, from war-torn Ukraine.
Should the C-295 end up as a sole bidder, the project might be shelved unless the Indian Air Force seeks special approval from the MoD.

Sept 15/14: No bids. India had to extend the deadline to October 2014, after their Avro replacement tender attracted zero bids and just 2 firms turned up on Aug 28/14 to even indicate interest. That’s awkward.

Their main problem may be pretty simple: absent long-term expectations of sales beyond the Indian government, who is going to spend money to build a manufacturing facility with full airport rights for an order of around 40 planes? Approximately nobody.

Miracolo !!!!!
The logistical nightmare that is America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan got a lot worse in August, when the U.S. Air Force scrapped 16 G.222 transport planes worth roughly half a billion dollars.

These were planes the Air Force had bought for the Afghans, but which rarely flew.

And just how much is half a billion dollars worth of military aircraft, in scrap value?

Around $32,000

With both platforms meeting or exceeding the RfP the competition is on a knife-edge.
That said, one area that may well work in favour of the C-27J is the Italian aircraft's compatibility with the Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules, which the IAF already fields.
Both types use the same engine and loading system, and share many of their avionics, meaning smaller spares and logistics requirements, which translates into lower support and operating costs.
This commonality can also be seen in the cross-sections of the main cargo bays - although narrower than the C-130J, the C-27J can fit the same sized pallets into its hold by loading them lengthwise instead of widthwise.
This saves time and effort in reconfiguring pallets when transferring loads from one aircraft to the other.
