But as they plotted the air raids, planners didn’t know that would be the case.
They prepared for the worst.
Not only did F-16s and EA-6B planes carry HARMs—in case the regime activated its air defenses and the Americans needed to shoot back with radar-homing munitions—commanders also assigned the most dangerous targets to high-tech F-22 stealth fighters and cruise missiles.

Advanced derivatives of the tri-service Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter could replace the Air Force’s F-22 Raptor, Boeing F-15C Eagle and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, multiple sources told the National Interest.
However, they added that the idea of replacing the high flying and fast Raptor with the slower and less agile F-35 was not well received by many within the Air Force.

Consegnati due nuovi simulatori ad alta definizione .....
First Immersive F-22 Sims Arrive .....

(1/12/2015)

Boeing delivered the first pair of 360-degree high-definition F-22 Raptor simulators to the Air Force, the company announced on Jan. 8.

http://boeing.mediaroom.com/01-08-2015- ... ual-System

"Boeing has delivered what are probably the most advanced high definition flight simulators I have experienced, and they are going to let our pilots realize training unlike any they’ve had before," said Col. Anthony Genatempo, the F-22 system program director at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, in the release.
"That translates directly into mission readiness," he added.
Boeing plans to upgrade Air Force's three previously constructed F-22 Mission Training Centers with the Constant Resolution Visual System, in addition to the recently completed fourth, and future fifth center, which is slated for completion this summer, according to the release.
F-22 MTC locations include JB Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, JB Langley-Eustice, Va., Nellis AFB, Nev., JB Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, and Tyndall AFB, Fla.

The company will carry out this work at its site in Palmdale, Calif., and at the Ogden Air Logistics Complex on Hill AFB, Utah.
F-22 depot maintenance is consolidating at Hill over the next year and a half as a cost-saving measure.
Ogden has typically provided depot maintenance on some 12 F-22s each year, but that number will grow to about 24 this year as part of the changes, states the Jan. 9 release.
In a separate move, the Air Force let a $67.7 million contract to Peerless Technologies of Fairborn, Ohio, for F-22 research, development, and sustainment advice and services until January 2020, announced the Pentagon on Jan. 9 ..... http://www.defense.gov/Contracts/Contra ... actID=5455

'Raptor' ..... forever .....
Raptor 2045 .....

John A. Tirpak (4/10/2015)

The Air Force now plans to retain the F-22 Raptor fleet into the 2040s, the service said in response to a question from Air Force Magazine.
“Based upon current projected fleet flying hour programs and actual aircraft usage, the predicted service life of the Raptor fleet goes into the 2040s without a SLEP [service life extension program] of the airframe,” USAF spokesman Ed Gulick said in an email.
While the design life of the F-22 is 8,000 hours—which roughly equates to a service life of about 22 years, at 360 hours of flying per year—each aircraft has data recorders measuring every stress and strain on the jet.
These data are “used by the F-22 Aircraft Structural Integrity Program [ASIP] to apply a Fatigue Severity Ratio factor to actual aircraft hours and determine equivalent flight hours,” he said.
Analytical models and engineering analysis of the data, taken along with “the Raptor’s projected flying hour program,” yielded the service life projection.
Air Combat Command started substituting more simulator hours for actual flying hours on the F-22 a few years ago as a way to husband the asset, and future Red Flag exercises also will be predominantly virtual, buying more F-22 airframe hours.
Previous service estimates forecast the F-22 would have to start to retire in the mid-2030s.

"It’s amazing what that airplane can do” .....
Raptor Keeps Amazing .....

John A. Tirpak (6/2/2015)

No Air Force missions into Syria happen without F-22s playing a pivotal role, said Gen. Hawk Carlisle, head of Air Combat Command, on Monday.
“What we have learned” about using the F-22 in combat is its "ability … to enhance everybody else," he told the audience at an AFA-sponsored Air Force breakfast event in Arlington, Va.
"It’s amazing what that airplane can do,” he said, noting its impressive situational awareness, "its ability to get there, its sensor suite, its ability to pass information,” and, of course, to defend airspace and drop weapons.
Carlisle recounted the story of one F-22 pilot who recently conducted an extraordinary mission.
“He did a mission, took off at about 6:05 at night and landed about 6:30 the next morning," he explained.
The pilot switched to different roles numerous times during the mission.
He "went to the tanker about seven times, did strikes, escort …. He did redirect, did [intelligence surveillance, and reconnaissance], and passed data," said Carlisle.
Navy F/A-18 pilots, after an early exercise with Raptors in a wargame called Northern Edge, said they would never disparage the F-22 again, because it’s “making everyone all that much more effective,” said Carlisle.
It wasn’t possible to tell whether he called the 2010 “decision not to buy any more of the F-22s” a “fateful” one or “fatal.”

In response to a resurgent Russia, the U.S. Air Force is increasing its presence in Europe, including the possible deployment of the F-22 Raptor, according to the Air Force secretary.
“I could easily forsee the day … when the F-22 might rotate in,” Deborah Lee James told reporters at the Paris Air Show June 15, adding that she could not specify a date by which they would be sent.
