F-22 Raptor gets major upgrades …The 5th-generation F-22 Raptor has been one of the world’s most dominant fighter aircraft since entering service and has defined what air dominance means to the U.S. Air Force.
To ensure that it remains relevant for years to come, the Ogden Air Logistics Complex’s 574th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, through collaborative efforts of the F-22 System Program Office along with partners Lockheed Martin and Boeing, recently completed the last aircraft to go through the F-22 Structural Repair Program that has been generating aircraft for the last 14 years.
“This is a great milestone for the program,” said Misty Stone, 574th AMXS director.
“Since Hill Air Force Base gained the F-22 workload in 2006, the 574th AMXS team of 400 employees has remained focused and dedicated on expanding the combat capabilities of the F-22 weapon system”.

F-22 ... si avvicina il viale del tramonto ...
… airforcemag.com … CSAF: F-22 Not in USAF’s Long-Term Plan …Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. wants to neck down the Air Force’s fighter inventory from seven fleets to four, and the F-22 is not on his short list.
Speaking during the McAleese FY2022 Defense Programs Conference on May 12, Brown said the tactical aviation study, which launched earlier this year, isn’t meant to produce the exact “right mix” of fighters for the future but to assemble a range of options that will shift as the threat does.
“What I’m looking for out of the [TacAir] study,” Brown explained, is not necessarily “the exact answer of what is the exact mix” of the USAF’s combat aircraft of the future.
“I’m really looking for a window of options,” he said, because “the facts and assumptions based on the threat will change over time.”
He called the study an “internal document” and something that’s “not so much to be delivered to Congress.”
--- --- ---
He did not mention the F-22 or the F-15E.
Asked to clarify, an Air Force spokesperson said Brown is thinking very long-term and in the context of “a very small fleet,” which will become increasingly hard to support, especially as it passes the 25-year age mark in 2030.
The F-22 will “eventually” retire from the inventory, she said, noting the F-22’s likely successor will be the NGAD.

An Air Force Accident Investigation Board report released July 9 cited cultural issues within the 757th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and distractions caused by a “distinguished visitor” event as contributing factors to the incident, in which an auxiliary power unit overheated.
The jet, tail number 06-4109 with the 422d Test and Evaluation Squadron, had not flown since June 2020 and had undergone extensive modifications for an operational test mission at the Nevada base.

… airforcemag.com … Air Force Deploying F-22s to UAE, CENTCOM Boss Says …The Air Force is sending a squadron of F-22s to the United Arab Emirates “over the next week or so,” U.S. Central Command boss Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. told the official UAE news agency Feb. 8.
The F-22 Raptors will be tasked with helping the UAE respond to recent drone and missile strikes by Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels that have killed several and threatened American personnel stationed in the Gulf nation.
“We’re going to bring in a squadron of F-22 fighters, the best air superiority fighter in the world, and they will also work with their UAE partners to defend the nation of United Arab Emirates,” McKenzie said in an interview with Emirates News Agency (WAM) during a visit to UAE.
In addition to the F-22s, the U.S. is also deploying the USS Cole, a guided missile destroyer, to help defend UAE, McKenzie said.

… airforcemag.com … New Official Art Reveals Advanced F-22 Capabilities, Possibly JATM …An artist’s concept of the Lockheed Martin F-22, posted on Instagram by Gen. Mark D. Kelly, head of Air Combat Command, offers an official glimpse of new capabilities for the Raptor, including a possible first look at the highly classified AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile.
The image, released April 27, portrays three F-22s flying in formation, each carrying what appear to be stealthy extended-range fuel tanks and slender outer wing pods with a chiseled aperture at their leading edges.
In the picture, one of the F-22s has launched a missile, which is neither an AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile nor an AIM-9X Sidewinder, the two air-to-air missiles known to be qualified for the fighter.
The tanks seem to be the same ones described in new Air Force budget documents, while the pods are likely to be an infrared search and track and/or electronic warfare system.
The only new missile publicly identified for the F-22 is the JATM.

Si sta manifestando un dissidio fra USAF e Congresso sul mantenimento in servizio dei 33 F-22 più anziani ...
… airandspaceforces.com … Raptor Rebellion …The Air Force wants to retire its F-22, the world’s greatest fighter jet, within the decade.
Congress doesn’t agree.
The Air Force plans to invest billions to keep its F-22 Raptor fleet relevant and lethal for the remainder of its operational life, then retire the jets circa 2030.
Upgrades years in the making will soon reach operational squadrons, keeping the Raptor at the cutting edge as the Air Force prepares for the arrival of its successor, the Next-Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) family of systems.
But as the Air Force moves to retire its oldest 33 Raptors next fiscal year, Congress appears unready to buy into its vision.
Giving up the Raptors, which average age about 16 years old today, making them the second-youngest fighters in the force after the F-35 - is anathema to lawmakers skeptical of the Air Force’s ability to deliver replacements any time soon.
F-22 advocates are loathe to see USAF give up its unique combination of stealth, power, and payload capacity before the highly secretive and still-nascent NGAD technology is ready for prime time.
The House version of the fiscal 2023 National Defense Authorization Act would block the Air Force from retiring those 33 F-22s and instead order the Air Force to upgrade them to match the most advanced operational configuration.
The Senate, meanwhile, appears set to freeze any action that would diminish F-22 capacity until the service can demonstrate it won’t lose any combat capability.
The final joint NDAA will almost surely direct the Air Force to change course on the Raptor.
