“XS-1” spaceplane .....

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will accept outside bids for the construction and demonstration of a reusable, unmanned “XS-1” spaceplane.
DARPA has been working with industry teams Boeing-Blue Origin, Masten Space Systems-XCOR Aerospace and Northrop Grumman-Virgin Galactic to mature three competing designs.
However, it will select just one team for Phase II and III, worth up to $140 million.

NG ci punta .....
Northrop Grumman might be "playing to win" the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's XS-1 programme, but the aerospace firm's interest in a reusable spaceplane for rapidly launching small satellites runs far deeper than any one project or contract.
The company's vice-president of space systems resiliency Doug Young tells Flightglobal that Northrop will likely press forward with its XS-1 concept through "other ways and means" if it isn't downselected for the programme's $140 million demonstration phase.

The semi-classified X-37B robot spaceplane hasn't received much attention, despite the fact that it is on its fourth flight in space.
At least, that's the official story.
Launched in May 2015, the latest mission seems even more covert than the three previous launches.
Absolutely no images of the spaceplane were released before launch.
That's a big change from the past, when we saw high-resolution images of the vehicle before launch and after landing.
Nobody knows when X-37B is coming home.
It's even possible that the US Air Force, which owns the small vehicle, has not set a firm date.
But we can consider what will happen when it does.
This analyst will speculate that no images or video of X-37B will be released after its landing.
Again, that would be a departure from previous trends, but consistent with the "no photography" policy of this flight.
Why is X-37B so camera-shy this time around?
The reason could be that the spacecraft currently in orbit isn't the same type of X-37B that we already know, or is an entirely different vehicle.

The Air Force’s X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Fla., on Sunday after nearly two years in low-earth orbit.
The mission, which launched on May 21, 2015, was the fourth completed flight for the OTV program.
Each successive mission has been longer in duration than the last - the first was 224 days, the second was 468, and the third was 675.
OTV-4 remained in orbit for 718 days, during which time it flew at altitudes ranging between 190 and 225 miles, reported Space Flight Now.

Beccato !
Noted astronomer and satellite expert Ralf Vandebergh of Nijswiller, Limburg, Netherlands, spent months searching the skies for one of the Holy Grails of sky spotting, the secretive U.S. Air Force Boeing X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle.
In May of this year, he finally succeeded.
Remarkably, on June 30 and July 2 of this year that Vandebergh finally captured some rare photos of the secret military spacecraft.
Fifty-year veteran space journalist and author of the new book, “Moon Rush: The New Space Race”, Leonard David broke the story about Vandebergh’s sighting and photos on Saturday, July 6, 2019 on LiveScience.com (*).
The photos are now being republished and shared around the world.

The U.S. Air Force's X-37B space plane just broke its spaceflight-duration record.
At 6:43 a.m. EDT (1043 GMT) today (Aug. 26), the robotic X-37B sailed past the program mark of 717 days, 20 hours and 42 minutes, which was set by the previous mission, known as Orbital Test Vehicle 4 (OTV-4).
The current mission, OTV-5, began on Sept. 7, 2017, with a liftoff atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
It's unclear what the space plane is doing up there now, or what it has done on past flights; X-37B missions are classified, and the Air Force therefore tends to speak of the vehicle and its activities in general terms.

E' ritornato ...
The U.S. Air Force X-37B spaceplane successfully landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility Oct. 27 at 3:51 AM EST, the Air Force announced.
This was the fifth mission of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle.
It flew for 780 days during this mission, breaking its own record by being in orbit for more than two years.
As of today, the total number of days spent on-orbit for the entire test vehicle program is 2,865 days, the Air Force said.
The spaceplane originally was designed to fly for just 270 days.
“The X-37B continues to demonstrate the importance of a reusable spaceplane,” Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett said in a news release.

X-37B ... imminente la prossima missione ...
The X-37B spaceplane will embark on its sixth mission from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., on May 16, Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett said.
The secretive, unmanned orbital test vehicle, which will launch on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, is notching new milestones as it matures.
Its fifth mission was its longest to date, ending Oct. 27, 2019 after 780 days on orbit.
Now, it will take a new approach to bringing experiments to space.
“This sixth mission is a big step for the X-37B program,” said Randy Walden, who runs the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office.
“This will be the first X-37B mission to use a service module to host experiments. The incorporation of a service module on this mission enables us to continue to expand the capabilities of the spacecraft and host more experiments than any of the previous missions.”

The head of a Russian defense contractor recently said the U.S. Air Force’s unmanned X-37B spaceplane is a secret space bomber that can drop nuclear warheads from orbit.
It isn’t, and it can’t.
Yan Novikov, the director-general of the state-owned Almaz-Antey design firm, made the false claim during the virtual New Knowledge conference, according to Russian state media outlet RIA Novosti.
During the event, Novikov said the U.S. has two unmanned spaceplanes: a large shuttle, which can carry up to six nuclear weapons, and a smaller spacecraft, which can carry three.
Novikov also said while the Air Force officially built the X-37B for “scientific research,” it actually developed the spacecraft for reconnaissance - and, in fact, it serves as a nuclear-armed space bomber.
And for good measure, Novikov claimed the Air Force will expand its fleet of unmanned craft to eight by 2025.

A Chinese aerospace manufacturer hailed a successful test flight of a new spaceplane that will broaden China’s reusable spaceflight capabilities.
The unnamed craft reportedly takes off like a rocket and lands like an airplane, much like the U.S. Air Force’s X-37B, but can’t go all the way into orbit like the American spaceplane can.
The Chinese version is the first of a series of reusable spacecraft that will benefit the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
The launch took place at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Inner Mongolia.
China’s Global Times reported the suborbital craft “landed at an airport in Alxa Right Banner in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.”

An uncrewed U.S. military space plane landed Saturday after spending a record 908 days in orbit for its sixth mission and conducting science experiments.
The solar-powered vehicle, which looks like a miniature space shuttle, landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Its previous mission lasted 780 days.
“Since the X-37B’s first launch in 2010, it has shattered records and provided our nation with an unrivaled capability to rapidly test and integrate new space technologies,” said Jim Chilton, a senior vice president for Boeing, its developer.
For the first time, the space plane hosted a service module that carried experiments for the Naval Research Laboratory, U.S. Air Force Academy and others.
The module separated from the vehicle before de-orbiting to ensure a safe landing.
