Sempre sulla breccia .....
The US Air Force’s veteran B-52H Stratofortress has an unrivalled legacy and one that it continues to build upon, as on-going upgrades ensure that it is able to bring the fight to bear in a diverse range of missions.
After years prosecuting a very different kind of warfare in Afghanistan and Middle East, the B-52 is now back in the strategic fray, flexing its muscles in its more traditional arena of deterrence.

Ahi ahi ahi ..... ora perdono i motori ..... :blackeye:
An engine dropped out of a B-52 bomber during a training flight on Wednesday, the Air Force has confirmed following questions from Defense News.
Because the B-52 runs on eight Pratt & Whitney TF33-P-3/103 turbofan engines, pilots were able to land the aircraft safely without any injury to the five personnel on board.
The Air Force has since dispatched a UH-1N Huey helicopter to recover engine debris, which was found located in an unpopulated area about 25 nautical miles northeast of Minot Air Force Base, an Air Force spokesman said in a statement.

Rimotorizzazione ..... qualcosa si sta muovendo .....
After years of deliberation over whether to buy new engines for the decades-old B-52 bombers, Air Force officials say they are closer than ever to making a decision.
For the past two years, Air Force Global Strike Command has worked with engine manufacturers and financial institutions to put together a business case assessment for replacing the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress’s eight Pratt & Whitney TF33 engines.
That assessment shows that an initial investment in new propulsion systems can save maintenance and fuel costs in the long run, but the Air Force’s acquisition wing is still working on the best way to finance the effort, said James Noetzel, deputy chief of the B-52 weapon system team.

GE, Rolls, Pratt Vie For B-52 Engine Upgrade .....

James Drew - Aerospace Daily & Defense Report (AW&ST) - Mar. 13, 2017

Engine manufacturers are lining up to upgrade or replace the Boeing B-52H’s outdated and inefficient Pratt & Whitney TF33 low-bypass turbofan engines to keep the mighty Cold War bomber flying beyond 2050.
U.S. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Stephen Wilson told Congress on March 8 that the service must explore options for replacing the TF33, which powered the first H-model B-52 flight on March 6, 1961, almost six decades ago.
GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce tell Aviation Week they are actively engaged with the Air Force about the re-emerging requirement, offering ready-made commercial derivative engines or, in Pratt’s case, a TF33 upgrade package.
Their proposals come after the Air Force and Boeing proposed swapping the TF33 for eight modern, 17,000-19,000-lb.-thrust-class regional/business jet engines instead of earlier four-engine alternatives, which were deemed too risky because of the necessary structural modifications and airflow changes around the bomber’s nuclear-armed weapons.
The service once proposed a quartet of CF6 high-bypass turbofans, which are derived from the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy’s TF39.
It also considered the 757-class PW2040 and RB211 series.
But recent analysis points to an eight-engine solution to limit airframe modification.
That would require at least 608 powerplants for today’s operational feet of 76 B-52Hs, plus several sets of spares.
The Air Force has not commissioned or conducted any wind tunnel or flight tests of candidate engines in the past several years.
But market research suggests there are enough engine options on the commercial market to warrant a competition.
A request for information issued in 2014 sought alternative solutions that achieve 10-25% better fuel consumption and 15-25 years of use between schedule depot overhauls.
On Feb. 3, the government issued another RFI, this time seeking TF33 replacements, specifying “regional/business-size jet engines.”
“Acquisition strategies are in the process of being formed for both the purchase of the engine and the integration on the aircraft,” a service spokesman said on March 13.
“If the Air Force decides to fund a re-engine program in the future, it will assess all procurement options to create the best value for the government.”

GE Aviation CF34-10

GE Aviation is a longtime propulsion system supplier for the Air Force’s bomber force, including the four-engine Boeing B-1B (F101-102) and Northrop Grumman B-2A (F118-100).
The company says it supports the Air Force’s B-52 re-engining plan and would offer the 18,000-lb.-thrust-class CF34-10, developed from the TF34/CF34 family.
The smaller 9,000-lb.-thrust TF34-100 powers the service’s Fairchild Republic A-10 “Warthog” attack aircraft.
The latest commercial CF34-10 series powers the Brazilian Embraer 190, 195 and Lineage 1000 and Chinese Comac ARJ21 regional jets.
“While no GE engines have been demonstrated on the B-52, the CF34-10 is an economical eight-engine replacement,” says Karl Sheldon, GE vice president and general manager of large military turbofan engines.
“We are excited to compete for the opportunity to fly the CF34 on this strategic asset.”

Pratt & Whitney Engine Enhancement Package

Nobody has more experience with the 56-year-old TF33 than the original designer and manufacturer, P&W.
The company says it could offer a new commercial engine, but believes an upgrade makes the most sense.
“Commercial engines offer advantages of higher fuel savings, extended mission range, reduced aerial refueling and minimized overhaul maintenance,” a company spokesman says.
“However, all commercial engines in this class require increased ability to support the B-52H electric and hydraulic load requirements, and would also require extensive airframe integration and flight testing.”
The firm’s engine enhancement package would address the TF33’s performance, durability, reliability, fuel consumption and time between scheduled overhauls as much as possible without needing to buy new.
“The TF33 currently meets all B-52H power and performance specifications and would not require any changes to the aircraft structure,” the company says.
P&W is pitching this as the “affordable option.”
Digitally-controlled commercial propulsors would also need to be militarized and hardened against electromechanical pulses resulting from nuclear explosions as well as cyberattacks.

Rolls-Royce BR700

Headquartered in Indianapolis, British engine maker RR’s U.S. division has already had “several conversations” with the Air Force about a B-52 propulsion upgrade.
The company would offer something from its BR700 series, which already powers the Air Force’s Gulfstream V/C-37A personnel transport fleet and the Bombardier E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node - based on the Global Express.
The alternatives in the B-52’s thrust class are the BR715 and BR725 series, but the company has not decided which to offer.
“A decision has not been reached yet, as we await the specific requirements,” says Thomas Hartmann, RR’s senior vice president for U.S. customer business.
“We are confident we can meet the technical and availability requirements.”

The Accident Investigation Board found that the cause of the mishap was that the pilot analyzed visual bird activity and perceived cockpit indications as a loss of symmetric thrust required to safely attain flight, and subsequently applied abort procedures.
Drag chute failure on deployment and exceeding brake-energy limits also substantially contributed to the mishap.

The Air Force has decided in principle that it will go ahead with re-engining the B-52 bomber force, but is still trying to figure out when, and with what money.
“This is one of those things where, we’re trying to fit it all in,” Secretary Heather Wilson said at an ASC17 press conference.
“We’re in the midst of bomber tradeoffs,” she said in reference to building the next five-year plan.
The Air Force has already invested heavily in modernizing the B-52 and “we know we’re going to have to re-engine it for the longer term,” Wilson said.
Keeping the B-52 makes sense because it “is able to do everything from [dropping] leaflets to nuclear deterrence.”
She called it “an amazing piece of equipment,” that is doing things never imagined by its designers - such as dropping ordnance “danger close” to troops on the ground - and it “will probably be in our arsenal for a fair amount of time to come.”

La notizia .....
BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La.
— The U.S. Air Force is preparing to put nuclear-armed bombers back on 24-hour ready alert, a status not seen since the Cold War ended in 1991.
That means the long-dormant concrete pads at the ends of this base’s 11,000-foot runway — dubbed the “Christmas tree” for their angular markings — could once again find several B-52s parked on them, laden with nuclear weapons and set to take off at a moment’s notice.
“This is yet one more step in ensuring that we’re prepared,” Gen. David Goldfein, Air Force chief of staff, said in an interview during his six-day tour of Barksdale and other U.S. Air Force bases that support the nuclear mission.
“I look at it more as not planning for any specific event, but more for the reality of the global situation we find ourselves in and how we ensure we’re prepared going forward.”

La smentita .....
“We are not planning or preparing to put B-52s back on alert,” service spokesperson Capt. Mark Graff told Air Force Magazine in an emailed statement.
“Preparations like updating base infrastructure,” including “updating alert facilities, munitions storage, dining facilities” did not indicate plans to change the status of the base’s B-52s, Graff added.
“Conducting exercises, and modernizing equipment are necessary to maintain a baseline level of readiness,” Graff said.
“We do this routinely as part of our organize, train, and equip mission so our forces are ready to respond when called upon.”

Il 2022 potrebbe essere l' anno buono .....
USAF Could Start Re-engining First Two B-52s By 2022 .....
James Drew (Aerospace Daily & Defense Report - AW&ST) - Dec. 21, 2017

The U.S. Air Force says the Boeing B-52H bomber’s 1960s-vintage Pratt & Whitney TF33-103 engine is “not sustainable past 2030” and must be replaced to keep the Stratofortress flying for another two decades, and the first two test aircraft could start undergoing modification by fiscal 2022.
Seventy-six of the Strangelovian Cold War bombers remain in the service’s arsenal and the fleet has been tapped to carry the new nuclear Long-Range Standoff (LRSO) cruise missile.
To keep the colossal aircraft flying beyond 2050 and meet the high power demands for next-generation weapons, a fire control radar and other electrical systems, the Air Force wants an eight-for-eight swap of the original TF33 with a similarly sized, but far more efficient, commercial replacement.
The service is specifically targeting a 20-40% improvement in fuel consumption compared to the TF33 and enough power-generation capacity to support a peak electrical load of 400-500 kVA.
The old bomber will require substantial modification, including a new power architecture and full authority digital engine controls.
But the service still wants to minimize any impact to the airframe and onboard systems, while maintaining the gross takeoff weight of 488,000 lb.
These and other details were provided to potential engine manufacturers and prime integrators at an industry event Dec. 12-13, 2017, at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana.
All of the big engine manufacturers attended the forum, including GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce and Safran.
Other attendees included Boeing, Rohr of United Technologies Corporation, Northrop Grumman, L3 Technologies, Omega Air, D-J Engineering, Honeywell, Spirit Aerosystems and McGill Aircraft Parts.
“The B-52 has a long past and a long future (2050+), but the TF33 is not sustainable past 2030 due to age, obsolescence and diminishing manufacturing sources,” the government says in an industry day slide presentation released Dec. 15.
The document notes that the Air Force is considering the potential purchase of 650 engines, enough to upgrade 76 aircraft, with another 42 units kept as spares.
The service will seek 20 engines initially to modify the first two bombers for testing.
To avoid the expense of completely recertifying the aircraft and all of its weapons, aerodynamic changes must be minimized at all costs.
The aircraft’s center of gravity also must remain unchanged.
The program plan remains in flux, but seed funding to get started has been provided in the Air Force’s budget for fiscal 2018.
There likely will be multiple contracts for preliminary designs and studies, followed by single awards to prime contractors for integration and engine manufacturers for engineering and manufacturing development, and production and deployment.
The service has for the first time released a draft or “notional” acquisition schedule.
Depending on which course of action the government decides to take, it will likely select one contractor for the engine and one for aircraft integration, with downselects for both anticipated by mid-2020.
Following an extensive development and testing period with the first two modified aircraft, engine upgrades for the first 10 operational aircraft could start in fiscal 2026, followed by full-rate production for the remaining 64 through fiscal 2028-34.
If initiated, this would be the most extensive upgrade in the bomber’s storied history.
The Air Force has been studying engine upgrades for the B-52G/H-series Stratofortress since 1971, starting with “Project Seek Four,” which would have swapped eight TF33s for four larger turbofan engines.
There have been no fewer than nine studies and proposals since then, with interest picking up in the late-1990s and mid-2000s.
So far, the Defense Department has nothing to show for its efforts except reams of paper.
But with the return to larger-power competition from Russia and China and the planned introduction of the LRSO cruise missile, the Air Force appears to be getting serious.
The leading candidates are Rolls-Royce’s 16,000 lb.-thrust BR725 and GE Aviation’s 18,000-lb.-thrust CF34-10.
Pratt & Whitney has previously offered upgrades.

Argo riconobbe Ulisse, Penelope no.

B-52s Deploy to England .....

Four B-52s are deployed to RAF Fairford, England, for “theater integration and training” in the United Kingdom, the Air Force announced (*).
Three B-52s and about 300 airmen from the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot AFB, N.D., arrived on Jan. 9, with the fourth arriving Thursday, according to US Air Forces in Europe.
The deployment will include joint and allied training “to improve bomber interoperability,” according to USAFE.
B-52s have regularly deployed to Fairford, most recently in September.

Rimotorizzazione ..... pressioni da parte di alcuni senatori .....
Senators Call for White House to Fund B-52 Modernization, Re-Engining .....

A bipartisan group of senators this week sent a letter to the White House urging funding for B-52 modernization, including new engine development.
“During the development of the next generation of bombers, the Air Force will continue to rely on the B-52 for vital operations around the world, which reinforces the need to upgrade these engines and the technology supporting the aircraft,” Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) said in a statement.
It is “imperative” that the Air Force gets new engines for the 76 B-52s in service to keep the bombers sustainable beyond 2030, according to the Jan. 31 letter (*), which was directed to White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney.
In addition to Heitkamp, the letter was signed by Sens. John Hoeven (R-N.D.); Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.); James Lankford (R-Okla.); Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.); Chris Murphy (D-Conn). Heitkamp and Hoeven represent North Dakota, which hosts B-52s at Minot Air Force Base.
Oklahoma is home to Tinker Air Force Base and the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, which does long-term maintenance on B-52s.
Connecticut is home to Pratt & Whitney (the manufacturer of the current engines), while GE Aviation and Rolls Royce have a presence in Indiana, both of which have stated interest in competing for B-52 re-engining work.
The Air Force said in December it has “initial seed funding” in the 2018 budget to begin re-engining the B-52.
The aircraft is currently powered by eight TF33-PW-103 engines, which began service in the 1960s, according to Pratt & Whitney.
