Serial number 61-1021 of Air Force Reserve Command's 307th Bomb Wing at Barksdale is the first of 30 Active B-52s slated for conventional-only conversion by 2017, according to a Sept. 17 release.
An additional 12 B-52Hs currently in storage at Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., will also be converted to spare them from destruction under the treaty, officials announced.
Conventional-only B-52s will be outwardly identifiable to ease Russia's treaty compliance monitoring efforts.
New START stipulates that both the US and Russia meet limits of 1,550 deployed warheads, 700 deployed launchers, and 800 deployed and non-deployed launchers by February 2018.
AFGSC plans to fully complete conversions early to provide for unforeseen delays.
The conversions will leave a nuclear capable fleet of 20 B-2A and 46 B-52H aircraft.

The campaign, though, had not yet achieved its central purpose of driving Hanoi back to the negotiating table—and the Air Force had suffered devastating losses getting to that point.
The problem was the deadly network of SA-2 surface-to-air missiles that webbed the landscape around Hanoi and Haiphong.
In a toll almost defying comprehension today - with B-52s still in regular frontline service - SA-2s downed 11 BUFFs and their crews in the first four nights of Linebacker II.

Six Air Force Global Strike Command bomber and missile wings responded to a series of mock nuclear threats as part of US Strategic Command's annual operational command and control exercise this month.
"Global Thunder gives us an ability to exercise our role as our nation's premiere deterrent force," AFGSC boss Gen. Robin Rand (1) said in a release (2).
"Our airmen had the opportunity to hone their skills as they support our nuclear deterrence and global strike missions for situations we don't normally experience," added the command’s crisis action team director Col. Eric Moore.
B-52s launched from Barksdale AFB, La., and Minot AFB, N.D., while B-2s participated from Whiteman AFB, Mo.
Missile wings at Minot, F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., and Malmstrom AFB, Mont., additionally took part in the combined command staff and field exercises, beginning Nov. 2.
U-2s acting under USSTRATCOM's Task Force 204 also contributed strategic intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support for the exercise from Beale AFB, Calif., according to a base release (3).
The week-long exercise concluded Nov. 8.

The Boeing B-52H is the vintage bomber that just won’t quit, and now the Cold War-era “Stratofortress” is being outfitted with one of America’s newest and longest-range conventional cruise missiles.
Lockheed Martin has been put on contract to arm the 54-year-old aircraft – which has outlived many of those who predicted its retirement – with the extended-range Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Weapon (JASSM) under a $9.1 million contract announced earlier this month.

Upgrading B-52 Bomb Bays .....

(1/19/2016)

The Air Force and Boeing have upgraded the bomb bay launchers in six B-52 bombers, allowing the aircraft to carry smart bombs in the weapons bay for the first time.
The upgrade is needed as the B-52s eventually transition from the Conventional Air-Launched Cruise Missiles to the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range, said Col. Tim Dickinson, USAF’s B-52 program director, in a Boeing release .....
http://boeing.mediaroom.com/2016-01-13- ... Media+Room
The upgrade modifies the B-52s existing common strategic rotary launcher to increase the total number of weapons the B-52 can carry.
The launchers can carry eight GPS-guided Joint Direct Attack Munitions, with future upgrades coming that will allow the launchers to carry standoff missile and Miniature Air Launched Decoys, according to Boeing.

Dal bilancio della Difesa USA per il 2017 spunta un ancora misterioso 'aereo arsenale' .....
Potrebbe essere il B-52 ..... destinato, di conseguenza, ad una nuova, lunga vita .....
A couple of decades ago, the Navy had an idea for an "arsenal ship" that went nowhere, but Defense Secretary Ashton Carter did the service one better Tuesday with his surprise proposal for an "arsenal plane."
Nobody knows yet what an arsenal plane would look like, or what its potential missions would be, other than that it would fashioned from an existing large aircraft platform - maybe a B-52 bomber - and it would be crammed with all manner of munitions.
It might be manned or unmanned.

Ma potrebbe anche essere il B-1B .....
Based on “one of our oldest platforms,” the concept has been developed by the Pentagon’s Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO), which Carter stood up in 2012 to accomplish “rapid innovation by building on what we have.”
----- ----- ----- ----- -----
Carter did not identify the “arsenal plane” platform.
According to a source familiar with the studies, the SCO is looking at using either the B-52 or B-1B in that role.
“It’s still conceptual and no program has been established.
It’s indicative of the kinds of things they are thinking about that could give them an advantage in precision strike.
It could end up being both bombers.”

Arsenal of Technocracy .....

John A. Tirpak (2/16/2016)

The Air Force is keeping mum on the “arsenal plane” concept teased by Defense Secretary Ashton Carter in a budget preview speech in early February.
Carter said the concept, developed by the Strategic Capabilities Office, would rely on an “existing aircraft” to carry loads of standoff munitions that would be cued to their targets by fifth-generation fighters deep inside enemy territory.
Lt. Gen. Mike Holmes, the Air Force’s deputy chief of staff for plans and requirements, told reporters Friday the concept is being worked with the Defense Advanced Research Projects agency, but he declined to say if the potential platform is a B-52 or B-1 bomber, or something else.
“We want to keep our options open,” Holmes said, saying the idea may “close a couple of gaps,” without elaborating.
He also declined to limit the concept to a ground-attack mission, leaving open the possibility of an air-to-air role as well.
“We’ll be looking … to see what the most productive mix really is,” he said, “and see if there’s enough there to make it worth investing beyond the concept phase.”
Asked if it might come along within the next five years, Holmes said “our record has not been great on developing things in five years.”

Ci vuole un nuovo radar .....

The US Air Force wants to spend more than $500 million replacing the outdated Northrop Grumman AN/APQ-166 mechanically scanned array radar on its 53-year-old Boeing B-52H fleet.
The old battlewagon, which ceased production in 1962, will not retire anytime soon, but needs a replacement radar if it is to continue supporting nuclear and conventional missions, says USAF deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and requirements Lt Gen Mike Holmes.

The Air Force has laid in money in the Fiscal 2017 budget to start replacing the B-52’s radar, service plans and requirements chief Lt. Gen. Mike Holmes said Thursday .....

“If we’re going to keep the B-52 around” until the 2040s, Holmes said, then it makes good operational and fiscal sense to replace the radar, which is becoming unsupportable and has a mean time between failure shorter than most operational missions, meaning the jets are “flying around with a broken radar a lot. So we will be buying a new radar.”
USAF is “working through the requirements” for what the radar needs to be able to do, he said.
Holmes added that, “if I had to guess,” USAF will use an existing radar and adapt it to the bomber, “rather than something new.”
Service officials have been saying for several years that they would like to adapt one of the current generation of Active Electronically Scanned Array radars for the B-52, to give it synthetic aperture capability and reduce its electromagnetic footprint.

There’s no re-engining program planned for the B-52, despite Global Strike Command leaders arguing hard in the last budget cycle that it would make sense to undertake one, according to Air Force Materiel Command chief Gen. Ellen Pawlikowski .....
http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... owski.aspx
Speaking with reporters at AWS16, Pawlikowski said that while GSC leaders “would very much like to” launch a re-engining program, “we haven’t figured out a way to put it in the budget” when there are so many other priorities.
USAF looked at a federal law aimed at energy-saving investment incentives for facilities as a possible mechanism to fund the engines, as well as leasing and other contractual vehicles, but “the business case wouldn’t close” on any of them.
“It would take too long” for maintenance and fuel savings to pay back the investment to make such an arrangement worthwhile to a “third-party source of funds,” she said.
The steep drop in fuel prices exacerbated the business case, but was not the main reason why the re-engining didn’t make it into the budget, she said.
