... a fighter squadron and elements of a fighter wing will be repositioned to Italy, moving them closer to the Black Sea region and better capable of conducting dynamic force employments and rotational deployments to NATO’s southeastern flank.

When Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced July 29 the movement of almost 12,000 troops out of Germany, the impact on the U.S. Air Force was seemingly minor.
One F-16 squadron, the 480th Fighter Squadron, would transfer from Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany to Aviano Air Base in Italy, which already hosts two F-16 squadrons.
Meanwhile, KC-135 tankers from the 100th Air Refueling Wing and CV-22 Ospreys operated by the 352nd Special Operations Wing would remain at RAF Mildenhall, England, instead of transferring to Spangdahlem.
At the time, Esper said the shift of F-16s to Italy would “[move] them closer to the Black Sea region and [make those forces] better capable of conducting dynamic force employments and rotational deployments to NATO’s southeastern flank.”
However, the strategic and geopolitical implications of the changes could be even more considerable than first thought and play into a range of areas from Germany’s fighter contest to the way the U.S. Air Force trains for war, former Defense Department and Air Force officials told Defense News.
Very little is known about when the transfer of forces will take place, how many airmen and their families will be impacted, or how much it will ultimately cost.

The never-ending saga of machines outperforming humans has a new chapter.
An AI algorithm has again beaten a human fighter pilot in a virtual dogfight.
The contest was the finale of the U.S. military’s AlphaDogfight challenge, an effort to “demonstrate the feasibility of developing effective, intelligent autonomous agents capable of defeating adversary aircraft in a dogfight. “
Last August, Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, or DARPA, selected eight teams ranging from large, traditional defense contractors like Lockheed Martin to small groups like Heron Systems to compete in a series of trials in November and January.
In the final, on Thursday, Heron Systems emerged as the victor against the seven other teams after two days of old school dogfights, going after each other using nose-aimed guns only.
Heron then faced off against a human fighter pilot sitting in a simulator and wearing a virtual reality helmet, and won five rounds to zero

Taiwan's Air Force has already upgraded 42 F-16 A/B jet fighters to the new F-16V standard, and it aims to complete all 141 planned upgrades by 2023.
As part of a NT$110 billion (US$3.8 billion) military modernization project launched in 2016, the Air Force is upgrading all of its F-16 A/Bs to the F-16V variant, which is equipped with more advanced avionics, including the Helmet Mounted Cueing System, APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar, and other electronic warfare systems.
The work is being undertaken by U.S. manufacturer Lockheed Martin and Taiwan's state-run Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation.

Based on Lockheed Martin’s backlog of F-16 orders, planned upgrades, and the recent revelation that the Air Force plans to depend on the fighter into the late 2030s, the F-16’s sunset years now could come in the 2070s, or later.
Lockheed Martin’s backlog of 128 F-16s - all for foreign military sales - won’t all be delivered until 2026, and the company anticipates more orders may be coming.
With a potential service life of 40 years or more, those jets could be flying into the late 2060s or later.
The type first entered service in the 1970s.

L' Air Force svilupperà il "gemello digitale" dell' F-16 ... 👥
The U.S. Air Force plans to make a digital replica of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, in an effort to improve the sustainment and modernization of F-16s operating around the world.
The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s F-16 Program Office is sponsoring the project through a new contract with Wichita State University’s National Institute of Aviation Research or NIAR, which will disassemble, and scan two F-16s – located at 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG) at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base – to create the ‘digital twin.’
The project is expected to last four years, and will collect data essential for future efforts to keep the F-16 fleet operational and effective.
This effort lays the groundwork for a multitude of potential future efforts in F-16 digital engineering.
Part of the initiative includes creating an adjustable 3D model of the plane.
“Our goal is to create a full scale 3D model of the aircraft, with the exception of the engine,” said 1st Lt. Connor Crandall, Digital Twin Program Manager within the F-16 Program Office.
“The data will be used to help address future parts obsolescence, and mitigate supply chain risks because we won’t have to rely on legacy manufacturing sources and processes. We’ll have the 3D models, and designs that we can send to the manufacturers we choose.”

Da VISTA a X-62A ...
The U.S. Air Force’s Variable In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA) has been redesignated as the X-62A, according to the Air Force Materiel Command (*).
The highly modified F-16 fighter has been operating for nearly 30 years as the NF-16D, the “N” signifying a permanent test modification.
The aircraft’s redesignation reflects, in part, its years of testing in support of new technology development, but also highlights a new mission that is being added during a major upgrade for the aircraft.
As well as having a new and improved VISTA Simulation System installed, the X-62A is being fitted with the System for Autonomous Control of Simulation (SACS), which will support autonomy testing for the Skyborg program being run by the Air Force Research Laboratory.
Skyborg is an autonomous capability being developed to enable a family of low-cost, teamed, unmanned aircraft to increase airborne “combat mass” alongside manned aircraft.
The aim is to rapidly defeat or disrupt hostile threats in contested environments, as well as increase situational awareness and survivability.

After some years of stalling over a fleet modernization effort, the U.S. Air Force will now upgrade 608 of its youngest Lockheed Martin F-16s in a massive program that will cost an estimated $6.3 billion.
Managed by the Fighters and Advanced Aircraft Directorate of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, the program brings together 22 specific modifications - some of which are already under way - that address the aircraft’s lethality and aim to equip it for service until at least the late 2040s.
The overall project - known as Post Block Integration Team, or PoBIT - is highly complex in terms of managing the application of upgrades across such a large fleet while still ensuring operational requirements are still being met.
This is a pretty massive effort, a collision of mods as we call it,” said Oryan “OJ” Joseph of the directorate’s F-16 Program Office.

Lunga vita al "Fighting Falcon" !!!
Additional budget documents set to be released later this month will start to map an improvement program for the F-16, to support that type serving almost another two decades, the service’s deputy chief of staff for plans and programs said.
USAF doesn’t have to decide on what the F-16’s replacement will be until 2028 or later, he added.
The F-16 will be ideal for a variety of missions not requiring high-end stealth and survivability, Lt. Gen. David S. Nahom told Air Force Magazine in an interview.
The jet will continue to be USAF’s low-end, multipurpose force builder.
The F-16 can be that “one airplane that can do a lot of low-end missions, and remarkably cheaper than a fifth-generation platform, and it can do them well,” he said.
It can “satisfy an objective in the Middle East and a week later, fly [combat air patrol] over a point on the U.S., and do a homeland defense sortie. It’s pretty amazing. And do that at half … [the] operating cost of any other air platform we have out there.”
Nahom asserted that, “There’s a utility to that. That’s why you’re seeing the investment in the post-block, our latest-model F-16s. Because we think we can get another 18-20 years out of them.”

Seventy-two F-16s across the Air National Guard have been upgraded with fifth-generation radars, giving the fighters the ability to track more targets at longer ranges with greater precision, the Air Force and Northrop Grumman announced this month.
The completion of the upgrades concludes a five-year process that started in 2017 when the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center awarded Northrop Grumman a contract worth $243 million to update the radars on the F-16.
That was in response to an urgent request from U.S. Northern Command, which said it needed the fighters outfitted with the radars to track “small cross-section threats,” such as cruise missiles.
The new Active Electronically Scanned Array radars derive from the radars that Northrop Grumman has put in the F-22 and F-35, the contractor said, and provide “earlier and longer range target detections and tracking.”

A program to develop and produce Turkey’s first active electronically scanned array radar will extend the flight time for some of the country’s F-16 aircraft by half, to 12,000 hours, according to a senior development engineer with the manufacturer.
Military electronics specialist Aselsan, Turkey’s largest defense firm, recently adopted the radar effort as part of a program dubbed Ozgur, which translates to “Free” in English.
