:drunken: :drunken:
May 7/14: QF-16 UCAVs? With the USAF looking for just 210 QF-16s at most, and hundreds of F-16s in storage and headed for storage, Boeing is thinking bigger. Boeing’s QF-16 chief engineer Paul Cejas told IHS Jane’s that they’re thinking of using them as Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles, for close-air support and deep strikes against the most dangerous targets.

Step 1 is giving the QF-16s control options that don’t require line of sight, which is currently the case at Tyndall AFB, FL and White Sands Missile Range, NM. Step 2 would involve thinking through mission performance very carefully. Contested airspace is the main reason to use a QF-16 over an MQ-9 Reaper, but UAV pilots have very limited fields of view. That’s a problem for contested strike missions, let alone aerial dogfights. Now add the inevitable delays of latency to magnify the problem, unless the QF-16s are given another level of autonomy for evasion and flight. Range will be limited without aerial refueling, though parallel R&D programs may be about to solve that issue.

On balance, this may be one of those ideas that needs to wait for another iteration or 2 of technology before it really makes sense. Sources: IHS Jane’s 360, “Boeing touts operational QF-16 UAV’”.

Forty years since it first flew, the F-16 fighter is poised to enjoy a new lease on life.
Upgrades to the aircraft’s avionics, coupled with structural work to extend flying hours, are set to enter service as customers refresh their jets ahead of the arrival of the F-35.
And, following South Korea’s selection of BAE Systems’ upgrade solution in 2012, there is now a choice of upgrade providers for the 28 customers who currently operate a staggering 138 different configurations of the blended-wing aircraft.

F-16V...tra un po' finiscono l'alfabeto se non si sgaggiano col JSF http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articl ... ne-402877/
Taiwan is the launch customer for the F-16V, which includes upgrades to the mission computer, airframe, cockpit instruments and electronic warfare systems, in addition to the AESA radar.

Northrop’s SABR is the same radar installed in 5th-generation fighters like the F-22 and F-35, which brings legacy aircraft more in line with modern aircraft.

The US Air Force was set to upgrade about 300 of its 1,000 F-16s under the combat avionics programmed extension suites (CAPES) programme, but canceled it due to budget constraints and in order to focus on bringing the delayed F-35A online. The air force also had chosen Lockheed as the lead systems integrator for CAPES, which would have upgraded portion of the service’s 650 newer Block 40 and 50 models.

The F-16 is one of the world’s most prolific fighter design, with more than 4,550 in service worldwide. Production is scheduled to continue through at least 2017. While the F-35A continues to flounder in development delays and cost overruns, many nations are saddled with maintaining a technologically relevant fighter force until the joint strike fighter is cleared for service.
