Questa mattina il 'Daily Report' dell' AFA è particolarmente ricco di notizie riguardanti la situazione attuale e le prospettive future del 'Fighting Falcon' .....

The F-16 orderbook will take until 2017 to work off, and Lockheed Martin anticipates there may be a market for a further 50 airplanes, said Rod McLean, company vice president and general manager for the F-16 and F-22. Speaking with reporters at a Lockheed Martin media event in Arlington, Va., on Wednesday, McLean said the company is producing F-16s for Iraq, but there is “considerable” interest in both new-build F-16s and substantial modifications.
“We have already reduced our footprint in Fort Worth,” Texas, where F-16s have been built since the mid-1970s, McLean said, and there is “no near-term pressure” to make space for more F-35 work there.
Lockheed is making F-16s at a rate of one per month, so an additional 50 jets would extend the line potentially to 2021.
That would make the Viper the longest in-production fighter by far (outstripping the MiG-21, which was produced for 26 years).
There’s also enough capacity that Lockheed could build more than one a month if a customer needed jets faster, McLean said.
He added that “even if we do have a gap” in orders, the operation is efficient enough that it could take a break and “stand up that line” again without too much difficulty.
There “continues to be a market for a fourth-generation aircraft,” he said.
Upgrades and Transfers .....

John A. Tirpak (2/20/2015)

There may be some new users of the F-16 even without new production, Lockheed Martin F-16 Vice President and General Manager Rod McLean said Wednesday.
Speaking with reporters at a company media event in Arlington, Va., McLean said Lockheed Martin is ready to facilitate transfers from existing users to new ones.
Romania is in talks to obtain F-16s that Portugal is phasing out, and there have been discussions about Denmark transferring some airplanes to a third party.
Modification work would likely be needed on any such transfer, McLean said.
Cash-strapped Greece is even thinking of an upgrade to get all its F-16s up to a common Block 50 standard, he said.
Although the US Air Force CAPES upgrade of the F-16—which would include the Northrop Grumman SABR radar—is currently moribund, a very similar upgrade to Taiwan’s F-16s is underway and going well, McLean said, and could easily be adapted to USAF’s Vipers if something like CAPES is resurrected.
Air Combat Command chief Gen. Hawk Carlisle said at AFA’s Air Warfare Symposium last week that he would still like to get at least the SABR for his F-16s, if not the rest of the CAPES.
There’s That Interoperability Thing .....

John A. Tirpak (2/20/2015)

Lockheed Martin F-16 chief Rod McLean notes that the preponderance of the air forces flying missions against ISIS in Iraq and Syria are using F-16s.
The US, Denmark, and many of the Gulf Cooperation Council nations—Bahrain, Oman, United Arab Emirates, as well as Jordan and Morrocco—are flying Falcons in Operation Inherent Resolve.
McLean, at a company media event in Arlington, Va., Wednesday, pointed out to reporters that Egypt, though not flying against Iraqi or Syrian targets, is flying missions against ISIS in Libya … with F-16s.
Turkey has also flown its F-16s against Syrian targets in unrelated operations within the last year.

Cricche ..... problema risolto .....
The US Air Force F-16D fleet is nearly back up and flying after a cockpit crack grounded the jets last year, with minimal disruption to pilot training.
The Air Force grounded 82 F-16D fighters last August following the discovery of "canopy sill longeron cracks" found between the front and rear pilot seats — part of the frame of the aircraft that surrounds the cockpit area of the jet. When the canopy is lowered, it rests on the longeron.

Una richiesta della massima urgenza .....
NORTHCOM Seeks Urgent F-16 AESAs .....

John A. Tirpak (3/30/2015)

The Air Force is two months from deciding how to meet an urgent US Northern Command request for F-16s fitted with active electronically scanned array radars, USAF leaders told Congress March 26.
AESA radars are needed to track “small cross-section threats,” such as cruise missiles, but would need improved command and control, surveillance, and “kill chain” tools as well, USAF strategic plans and programs chief Lt. Gen. James Holmes told the tactical air and land forces panel of the House Armed Services Committee.

http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... olmes.aspx

AESAs were part of the scrapped F-16 CAPES upgrade, which fell out of the Fiscal 2015 budget.
Maj. Gen. Timothy Ray, director of USAF global power programs, added the service is “looking very closely at the capabilities that would be required.”

http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... m-ray.aspx

Swapping the existing radar for an optimized AESA for the new mission might cause USAF to “lose some capabilities,” Ray said, which he did not elaborate on but likely related to the air-to-ground mode.
NORTHCOM wants the radars in place within 18 months.
A decision is expected “in the next month or two, of exactly how we’ll do that,” Ray said.
The pair said F-16s assigned to defend the National Capital Region would get the system first, but “we remain concerned about coverage for the rest of the country and the rest of the F-16 fleet,” Ray noted.

http://www.113wg.ang.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123442461

Holmes said after getting AESAs for NCR coverage, “we’ll ... then see how we would expand it across the country.”

Ancora su ..... "Una richiesta della massima urgenza" ..... ovvero ..... un bel dilemma per l' USAF .....
The U.S. Air Force is balancing between losing capability and meeting an urgent request to equip Air National Guard Lockheed Martin F-16s assigned to homeland defense with active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars to detect small radar cross-section targets, such as cruise missiles.
U.S. Northern Command has issued an urgent operational need (UON) and the Air Force must decide between fitting the Block 30 F-16s assigned to aerospace control alert with a non-integrated AESA suitable for the air-to-air mission or a fully integrated radar capable of supporting all the F-16’s roles.

F-16 Micro-Upgrade .....

John A. Tirpak (5/18/2015)

The Air Force will upgrade "20-plus" F-16s with an active electronically scanned array radar in response to a Joint Urgent Operational Need (JUON) from US Northern Command, service acquisition executive William LaPlante said Friday.
He told Air Force Magazine after the AFA-sponsored, Air Force breakfast the jets will likely be Air National Guard aircraft, and they will likely be those stationed at JB Andrews, Md., which has responsibility for defending Washington, D.C.
"The JUON we're acting on is focused not on the whole homeland defense mission," but on a "more focused" subset of it, he said.
The upgrade won't be applied F-16 fleet-wide "in the first tranche," LaPlante said, but he didn't say whether it would later be expanded.

Perso un esemplare irakeno (negli USA)
The crash of the F-16 occurred near Douglas close to the border between Arizona and New Mexico. The jet was the inaugural F-16D block 52 #1601 (RB-01) for the Iraq Air Force which first took flight on May 2nd, 2014.

The crash sparked a brush fire that was burning next to a high-pressure gas line. Emergency personnel from the Fire Department was pulled back from the area due to the proximity of the gas line. Homes in the vicinity were being evacuated.

Operating out of Tucson National Airport, the 162nd Fighter Wing is the largest Air National Guard fighter wing in the USA, and has been training pilots since 1969. I also operates the Air Force's international F-16 training academy. The Wing averages 17,000 flying hours per year. Arizona has excellent year-round flying weather. Fewer than 3 percent of all scheduled sorties are canceled due to bad weather conditions.

The Iraq government ordered 36 F-16s and while delivery of them is on hold, the pilots who will fly them have been learning the ropes of the aircraft with the 162nd FW since 2012.

US Won’t Speed-Up F-16 Deliveries to Iraq .....

Brian Everstine (09/09/2015)

The US does not intend to speed-up deliveries of F-16 fighter jets to Iraq, even though the first four in that country’s air force have begun combat flights against ISIS, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said Sept 8.
Iraq is still set to receive an additional 32 F-16s, with the next group slated for delivery in the “coming months,” he added.
The two countries are working out the details of that transfer, but that move is not being expedited as a way to assist with flights in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
The Iraqi F-16s recently joined the fight and flew its first airstrikes against ISIS, the Iraqi Air Force announced (*).
Iraqi pilots train with the Arizona Air National Guard on how to fly the jets.
The first four landed at Balad on July 13.
The additional flights from the Iraqis are “important steps forward” and help the coalition enhance its fight against ISIS, Cook said.
(*) ..... Iraq F-16s Join Anti-ISIS Air Campaign .....

Amy McCullough (09/08/2015)

Iraqi F-16s have joined the air campaign against ISIS terrorists, Iraqi Air Force Commander Anwar Hamad Amin announced during a press conference in Baghdad on Sunday.
“The blows of these aircrafts [sic] were accurate and carried out based on accurate intelligence,” said Amin, according to IraqiNews.com .....
http://www.iraqinews.com/iraq-war/f-16- ... air-force/
However, he also urged citizens to “stay away from the headquarters of the organization in order not to be subjected to harm.”
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook praised “the Iraqi Air Force for its successful use of this cutting edge aircraft in the international campaign to degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL.”
Iraqi F-16 pilots trained with the Arizona Air National Guard’s 162nd Fighter Wing in Tucson, Ariz., after the initial two aircraft were delivered in December 2014 because of the shaky security situation in Iraq.
While in Arizona, one Iraqi F-16 was lost in a fatal crash.
Four F-16s were ferried to Balad, Iraq, on July 13.
“The United States is committed to building a strategic partnership with Iraq and the Iraqi people and we will continue to work with the Government of Iraq on the delivery of the remaining aircraft as they become available within the framework of the production schedule,” said Cook.
Amin also noted that “what happened is the result of great cooperation between Iraq and America,” reported the Iraqi news organization.

Arie Church (09/11/2015)

Two F-16s are being retrofitted with Northrop Grumman's Scalable Agile Beam Radar for testing at Edwards AFB, Calif., in support of the Taiwanese air force and future US F-16 upgrades.
"In an era in which the numerical superiority of adversaries is expected to remain large, [Active Electronically Scanned Array radar] can offset that advantage and provide increased lethality for the F-16," Jon Haser, 416th Flight Test Squadron support contractor, said in a Sept. 9 release .....
http://www.edwards.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123457520
The F-16 Radar Modernization Program testing will "help develop radar modes of the SABR and to evaluate the AN/APG-83 radar performance specified in the contract prior to integration efforts by Lockheed Martin," Haser added.
The Air Force terminated its F-16 Combat Avionics Programmed Extension Suite program, which would have included new AESA radar, but is testing SABR for Taiwan's ongoing upgrade program.
US Northern Command is looking to upgrade alert Air National Guard F-16s at JB Andrews, Md., with AESA under a separate, urgent operational requirement.
Testing at Edwards will continue through August 2016, according to the release.

Eight F-16s from the 13th Fighter Squadron at Misawa AB, Japan, are in Singapore to participate in Commando Sling 15-3, a bilateral air combat training event with the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
The fighters have trained at Paya Lebar AB, Singapore, since Aug. 31 alongside their Republic of Singapore Air Force counterparts.
The event is due to wrap Sept. 19.

F-16 Finishes Torture Test .....

John A. Tirpak (11/4/2015)

An F-16C Block 50 has finished 32 rounds of torture tests inflicted over two years in Lockheed Martin’s Full Scale Durability Test facility in Fort Worth, Texas, which will develop data needed to conduct a service life extension program on the type, the company announced Tuesday .....
http://lockheedmartin.com/us/news/press ... stone.html
The aircraft endured 27,713 equivalent flight hours in a stress rig designed to push, pull, and twist its structure to simulate flying the aircraft well past its 8,000 equivalent flight hours design life.
After the test was completed, the F-16 was subjected to maximum-load conditions to prove it could still operate within the full flight envelope.
It’s now being torn down for inspection of the parts to see which ones held up, which ones fractured, and which ones broke.
The data will help the Air Force figure out what kinds of replacement parts and reinforcements it’ll need to SLEP 300 F-16s so the aircraft can serve to 12,000 hours.
The Air Force cancelled its Combat Avionics Programmed Extension Suite (CAPES) F-16 upgrade in recent years, but Air Combat Command chief Gen. Hawk Carlisle said in September USAF will have to do some kind of SLEP of the F-16 to keep it flying while the service takes extended deliveries of the F-35.
Lockheed Martin flew an upgraded version—the F-16V—in October, which featured many of the improvements USAF wants, including an AESA radar.

Air Force Collecting F-16 SLEP Info .....

John A. Tirpak (1/25/2016)

The Air Force has issued a solicitation for companies able and interested to participate in a Service Life Extension Program of the F-16 fleet .....
https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity ... e&_cview=0
The solicitation, issued on Jan. 14, would apply to F-16C and D aircraft in Blocks 40-52, and the SLEP would extend aircraft life from 8,000 equivalent flight hours to at least 10,000 (the threshold, or minimum) and possibly 12,000 (the objective).
USAF said there may be a foreign military sales element, as well.
The Air Force emphasized that it’s not ready to contract for the SLEP, but is seeking “initial sources.”
The service has not yet asked Congress to fund an F-16 SLEP, but has said in recent years that one will be necessary to preserve minimum fleet sizes given delays in bringing the F-35 into service.
The Jan. 14 solicitation focused on structural elements, “consumables” (such as nuts, bolts, and washers), and companies able to assemble and integrate the upgrade kits.
Notably, the solicitation said nothing about new sensors or avionics, such as an Active Electronically-Scanned Array radar, which USAF officials have said will be needed for any F-16s that may be extended in service.
The service will compete elements of the SLEP as much as possible, and will try to attract small businesses to participate.
It said an “industry day” will be scheduled to brief potential offerors.

Northrop Grumman began flight testing of its new APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) on the latest F-16V Viper variant this week at Edwards AFB, Calif., the company announced .....
http://www.globenewswire.com/newsarchiv ... d=10159711
"The beginning of flight testing is a major milestone for SABR that will lead to game-changing mission advantages for the warfighter," company airborne C4ISR vice president Mike Hinkey said in a release.
The SABR Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar is a key component of the F-16V configuration, which is available as upgrade to existing F-16s or for new-build aircraft.
The APG-83 "provides fifth generation fighter radar capabilities to the F-16" at an affordable price, said Hinkey, and has already been selected by Taiwan as part of its ongoing F-16 upgrade.
A pair of legacy F-16s have already been retrofit with the APG-83 at Edwards to support testing for Taiwan.
The company has delivered 14 APG-83s to Lockheed Martin since last December and plans to deliver 144 units for international customers this year.

Devo dire che gli dona..

Evaluating the Viper’s Future .....

Brian Everstine (3/16/2016)

Initial reports on the full-scale durability test of an Air Force Block 50 F-16C have not produced any “significant” findings, showing promising potential for the long-term health of the fleet, Lockheed Martin officials said on Tuesday.
Lockheed in November wrapped up its testing on the Fighting Falcon, testing the aircraft to 27,713 equivalent flight hours to see how the jet’s body would hold up to extensive flight and test the lifespan of the jet .....
http://www.lockheedmartin.com/us/news/p ... stone.html
Susan Ouzts, the vice president of Lockheed’s F-16 program, told reporters on March 15 that an initial report earlier this month showed nothing significant, and a full report on the test will come this summer.
Lockheed is finishing up its current, on-the-books production of the F-16 with seven more jets headed to the Iraqi Air Force out of a total buy of 18.
The company is looking for more international customers for the F-16, offering the new F-16V, which was developed for the Taiwan air force, to keep the company’s line going before it could go cold in late 2017 .....

Sul viale del tramonto ?

On the 45th anniversary of the F-16 lightweight fighter’s first flight, Lockheed Martin faces the very real prospect of turning off "Fighting Falcon" production as prospective customers like Pakistan struggle to clear the US government’s regulatory and funding processes.
After assembling more than 4,500 F-16s in almost 140 different configurations, the Fort Worth, Texas production line is thawing from hot to lukewarm and could go cold by “about the end of 2017” after Lockheed delivers the remaining seven of 36 Iraqi F-16IQs.

Precipitato un esemplare dei Thunderbirds
The pilot was able to parachute to safely while his jet went down in a field. The Colorado Springs Fire Department said the pilot was being evaluated by Air Force Academy paramedics. The Thunderbird pilot purposely went down in that open field to avoid harming anyone.

Polonia ..... in vista migliorie per gli F-16 .....
The Polish military is in discussions with the United States about a new logistics agreement for its F-16 fighter fleet, with a military official arguing here that Warsaw should look to boost its F-16 fleet come 2025.
The Polish military also has had preliminary talks about a major upgrade package that would install active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars on at least some of its 48 F-16 C/D models.
Lt. Col. Robert Gurzeda, commander of the 32nd Tactical Air Base, told reporters during a visit that the Polish government made a “mistake” in 2003 when it signed a contract for 48 of the Lockheed Martin-produced fighters, because it did not involve a complete spare-parts replacement program.
