Si comincia a definire in quali basi collocarli ...
The Air Force will soon start studies assessing the environmental impact of basing the B-21 Raider at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, and Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., the service announced on March 6.
One of the two locations will be the first base to host the bomber.
Typical environmental assessments consider the impact of operations, noise, and pollution from a weapon system on the local area’s population, agricultural enterprises, water quality, transportation, cultural resources, airspace, and wildlife.

In about 10 years, “we’ll have B-21 filling out squadrons, with B-1 gracefully retiring, and then very soon after that the B-2s gracefully retiring. That’s a perfect world. And in a very perfect world, we’ll get to 220 bombers,” Nahom said.
That’s the figure combatant commanders need and will expect, he said.
“That is our goal, we’re going to try to get there.”

Il B-21? ... "Sta cominciando a sembrare un aeroplano" ...
The first Northrop Grumman B-21 test aircraft in final assembly is “starting to look like an airplane,” a senior U.S. Air Force official said.
The first B-21 entered the assembly process last fall at Northrop’s plant in Palmdale, California, and continues to make progress.
“The first test aircraft is being built, and it’s starting to look like an airplane. Suppliers from across the country are delivering parts that are coming together now,” said Randall Walden, director of the Air Force’s Rapid Capabilities Office, which is managing the B-21 development program.

The U.S. Air Force has commissioned a flying testbed aircraft to test the avionics system and software for the Northrop Grumman B-21 bomber, a senior official said on Aug. 13.
The first B-21 test aircraft is still being assembled in Palmdale, California, but the flying testbed allows the stealth bomber program to “buydown risk,” said Randall Walden, director of the Air Force’s Rapid Capabilities Office, which is managing the program.
“We have a flight test aircraft that we’ve been hosting some of these subsystems on,” Walden said.
“We’re doing it kind of in a parallel approach, working out some of the bugs with the software as well as the subsystems.”

The US Air Force (USAF) is now expecting the first flight of its Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider long range strike bomber (LRSB) to take place no earlier than 2022, slightly later than the late 2021 timeframe the service previously expected.
Major General Mark Weatherington, Eighth Air Force commander, said on 31 August that the USAF could also make the aircraft’s initial operational capability (IOC) date earlier, depending if it accelerates deliveries.
This does not mean the aircraft would be delivered earlier, he said, but instead would represent a steeper ramp-up.
Matthew Donovan, former USAF undersecretary, said in January 2018 that the B-21’s IOC was scheduled for the mid-2020s.

B-21 ... rollout tuttora previsto nella seconda metà del 2021 ...
Although the U.S. Air Force has backed off from a schedule revealed in July 2018 to fly the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider for the first time on Dec. 4, 2021, the first aircraft still may emerge from Building 401 on Site 4 at Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, during the next 12 months.
The Air Force’s new schedule calls for first flight of the B-21 in 2022.
Given the traditional 6-9-month period of outdoor ground testing in advance of any first flight by a new aircraft, the updated schedule still implies a strong chance of a factory rollout during the second half of 2021.

Production of a second B-21 stealth bomber is underway at Northrop Grumman’s facility in Palmdale, Calif., while the first Raider is expected to roll out in early 2022 and fly in the middle of that year, according to Randall Walden, director of the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office.
The Air Force predicted it could fly the secretive B-21 for the first time in December 2021.
But in an exclusive interview with Air Force Magazine, Walden said that forecast was always a best-case scenario, and that first flight in mid-2022 is now a “good bet.”
The first Raider hasn’t yet reached final assembly, he said, but is “really starting to look like a bomber.”
A second plane, now moving down the production line, will allow the Air Force to vet the airframe, Walden said.

Fuori dal nero ... :black: >>> :)
The first B-21 stealth bomber will roll out of its California factory in early 2022 and make its first flight a few months later.
The second, nonflying test model is also in assembly.
Contracts should be coming soon for constructing hangars and maintenance facilities at operating bases.
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the project appears to be on track.
But how many Raiders will be built - and at what pace - remains an open question.
The first Raider is “really starting to look like a bomber,” said Randall G. Walden, director of the Air Force’s Rapid Capabilities Office (RCO), which manages the highly secretive program, in an exclusive interview with Air Force Magazine.
The B-21 will come out in the open for engine runs, taxi tests, and other necessary ground checks at Northrop Grumman’s Palmdale, Calif., plant in early 2022.
The first flight should follow several months later, Walden said.
That first flight will be a short, 36-mile hop from Palmdale to Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.
Once there, the 420th Flight Test Squadron will put the bomber to extensive aerial tests.

The Air Force has erected a prototype temporary shelter for the B-21 bomber at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D.; one of a number being evaluated for use at B-21 bases, depots, and potentially at forward deployment sites.
An image released with a press release about the shelter, however, may also divulge the dimensions of the aircraft, which have never been revealed.
The image shows the temporary shelter on the tarmac at Ellsworth.
Adjacent to the shelter is a vehicle in the class of a Ford F-150 or Chevy Silverado, both of which are about 20 feet long.
Comparing the truck to the grid of concrete sections on the tarmac, also about 20 feet square, indicates the shelter is about 150 feet long and 80 feet deep.

An experimental, temporary shelter for the B-21 recently erected at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., which appeared in press release photos to be substantially smaller than B-2 hangars (and suggested a smaller size for the B-21), is actually 200 feet wide by 100 feet deep, the Air Force said in response to a query.
That makes it large enough to accommodate the B-2, which has a wingspan of 172 feet and a length of 59 feet, and reveals nothing about the dimensions of the B-21.

In attesa del primo volo ...
As the first flight of the B-21 Raider bomber draws closer, Gen. Timothy M. Ray, head of Air Force Global Strike Command, toured Northrop Grumman’s production facility and the test enterprise that will put the jet through its paces beginning next year.
Ray saw “significant progress made on the build of the first flight test aircraft that will one day make its way to Edwards Air Force Base, [California], for testing,” said the Rapid Capabilities Office, which manages the B-21 program, in a press release.
The RCO (*) said flight testing of the new bomber will begin as soon as aircraft No. 1 is complete, and this will be driven by “key maturity events” and not “arbitrary dates.”

The US Air Force wants to acquire at least 145 B-21 Raiders from Northrop Grumman, estimated to cost in excess of $90 billion.
President Joe Biden’s nominee to be the next secretary of the air force, Frank Kendall, says that “is a reasonable number, at this point.”
Kendall’s comments were made during a confirmation hearing for his new post at the Senate Armed Services Committee on 25th May.
In 2010 dollars, USAF said at contract award that it expected the jets to come in at $511 million each.
Adjusted to inflation, this would come in at $626 million and in excess of $90 billion for 145 units.
However, the contract-award number was calculated against a buy of 100 airplanes – a larger volume of production would naturally drive unit costs lower.

The success of the B-21 program so far is due to its modular approach and incremental changes to its technology, not its requirements, Air Force Global Strike Command head Gen. Timothy M. Ray said June 3.
“We’ve codified the approach … of open mission systems [and] modularity of design, and that allows us to keep very stable requirements” on the B-21, Ray said during an AFA Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies streaming discussion.
“It’s not necessary to return to [the Joint Requirements Oversight Council] and ask for a new radio, weapon or sensor, or new defensive systems.”
These are assumed to be a necessary “part of the bomber,” he explained.
Because of that, “you can build it very quickly,” and there have been no requirements changes on the program, he added.

The Secretary of the Air Force officially selected Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, as the location to host the Air Force’s first operational B-21 Raiders and the formal training unit.
The B-21 Raider was designed to replace the Air Force’s aging bomber fleet as a long-range, highly-survivable bomber capable of carrying mixed-conventional and nuclear payloads, to strike any target worldwide.
“Since its humble beginnings as Rapid City Army Air Base in 1942 with a mission of training B-17 Flying Fortresses for missions in the European theater, Ellsworth has continuously evolved into its current role of providing combat airpower – anytime, anywhere around the globe,” said Maj. Gen. Mark Weatherington, 8th Air Force and Joint-Global Strike Operations Center commander.
“Now home to three of the four original squadrons that participated in the historic Doolittle Raid, the rich heritage continues today with Ellsworth’s selection as the first main operating base for the B-21 ‘Raider’ bomber.

NEW
B-21 BOMBER STEALTH

Ps.
Anche Il B-2 Bomber “è stato ben pensato e fatto”;

Nuove informazioni sulla configurazione del B-21 ...
The Air Force’s newest rendering of the secret B-21 bomber shows an exotic layout of cockpit windows.
The image, the third released so far, offers a new oblique view of the aircraft from below its port side, showing a deeper keel and wider weapons bay than that of the B-2 bomber it will succeed. But the air intakes, which have been redesigned, are obscured.
The new B-21 Raider image was published July 6 along with a new fact sheet (*).
The Air Force identified it as an “artist’s interpretation.”
It shows the aircraft taking off from Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., where it will be flight tested beginning early next year.
The prior official illustrations were released in January 2021 and in February 2016.
The new picture shows a triangular, curved main forward cockpit window and a wide, arcing side window with no apparent interior framing.
That departs from earlier views which showed B-2-style windows.
Just aft of the side window is the Global Strike Command badge and stenciling for ground rescue instructions.

(Aereo senza pilota della marina US NAVY)

Ps.
Personalmente non credo che ciò si realizzi,

ovviamente, come si sa, tutto può succedere.

Un commento da "The Aviationist" ...
The U.S. Air Force published on July 6, 2021 a new rendering of the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, accompanied by its official fact sheet.
The new artist rendering graphic follows the second one that was released in January 2020.
The Air Force has put some emphasis on the fact that this is an artist’s interpretation, meaning that it could also include some inaccuracies (possibly even intentional as to not disclose important details).
While the last time the renderings featured the locations where the operational bombers will be based, this time Edwards Air Force Base, California, can be seen in the background.
As mentioned in the Air Force’s press release, the 420th Flight Test Squadron based at Edwards AFB will plan, test, analyze and report on all flight and ground testing of the B-21 Raider, so it made sense to include in the rendering the “first home” of the bomber after its first flight from the Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, where its being built.

The Air Force needs to move quickly as it brings on the B-21 and modernizes the B-52, because operating four bombers at a time is not sustainable.
This means the venerable B-1s and B-2s need to head to the boneyard for retirement ASAP, the service’s top planner said.
The secretive, next-generation B-21 Raider is being built right now and will be flown in the “not-too-distant future,” said Lt. Gen. David S. Nahom, the deputy chief of staff for plans and programs, during a July 14 AFA Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies event.
When that happens, the Air Force will be flying the B-1, B-2, B-52, and B-21 simultaneously.
“That is not affordable,” Nahom said.
“The B-1 and B-2, as phenomenal as they are, we’ve got to get those out of service as the B-21 comes on and we get ourselves to that two-bomber fleet, which is a B-21 and a modernized B-52.”

The U.S. Air Force has five B-21 Raider bombers currently in various states of production at manufacturer Northrop Grumman’s plant in California, the service’s top civilian said on Monday.
“We have been living off of bomber fleet investments made many decades ago, but that is rapidly changing,” Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told the audience at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference here.
“As I speak there are now five test aircraft being manufactured on the B-21 production line at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California,” he said.
“You will never hear me make optimistic predictions about programs. All programs have risk and the same is true of the B-21, but at this point at least, the program is making good progress to real fielded capability.”
Previously, the Air Force had only acknowledged two B-21 test aircraft in production ...

In attesa del rollout del B-21 Raider ...
The coming year will see the U.S. Air Force’s most anticipated new aircraft rollout in recent memory as the service debuts its next stealth bomber.
But 2022 will also bring what are expected to be tough choices and retirements as part of the upcoming budget proposal for the following fiscal year.
The B-21 Raider will be rolled out to the public in 2022, though there is no concrete date.
Several months afterward, the Raider will make its first test flight.
“We’ll do something special as we bring out the B-21,” such as a ceremony for the unveiling or the follow-on first flight, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown said in September during Defense One’s online State of Defense conference.
This will be the first public unveiling of a new Air Force bomber in more than three decades, since Northrop Grumman’s B-2 Spirit bomber was revealed to the public at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, in November 1988.
The B-2′s first public flight took place the following year, in July 1989.

Ora sono sei i B-21 in produzione ...
The U.S. Air Force has confirmed that a sixth B-21 Raider is now under construction, and that software designed to support the aircraft's fuel system has already been validated in a digital environment.
The service is still expecting the rollout of the first of these new stealth bombers to happen before the end of the year, and for the type's first flight to occur shortly afterward

The first B-21 expected to fly is largely assembled and has moved to a calibration facility, one of the last steps before powering systems and making final checks ahead of first flight, Rapid Capabilities Office Director Randall Walden reported.
On the sidelines of the AFA Warfare Symposium in Orlando, Fla., Walden noted that “we’ve taken the first one out” of the production facility.
“It’s got landing gear. … It’s got wheels on it. … It’s got the wings on it. It really looks like a bomber,” Walden said.
Six B-21s are now under construction at Northrop Grumman’s Palmdale, Calif., facility, he said.
The loads calibration test is a “normal thing you do” and ensures the structure “is designed and built to what we actually meant it to do.”
Once that’s done, “that gives us great insight into, ‘Did the actual design meet our needs, and did the manufacturing of that meet our needs?’”
The calibration test aircraft has not yet been assigned a tail number or name, he said, but it’s expected to be the first to fly.
Walden said supply chain issues have not significantly affected the production program, but he declined to predict when the rollout and first flight would occur.

The Air Force’s “4+1” fighter plan is still intact despite Secretary Frank Kendall’s new “imperative” to develop a fighter-like unmanned airplane, and the Air Force is well into developing a concept of operations for a new unmanned long-range bomber that might be attritable, if the price is right.
The 4+1 plan - a roadmap for fighters that includes the Next Generation Air Dominance system, the F-35, the F-15EX, and the F-16, with the A-10 as the “plus one” - “is still valid … as part of near-term plans, … even mid-term plans,” Kendall told reports at the AFA Warfare Symposium.
That’s because “it’s early … to commit” to uncrewed combat aircraft of the scope he’s contemplating.
In his keynote speech, Kendall said the NGAD system “will include a crewed platform teamed with a much less expensive, autonomous, uncrewed combat aircraft employing a distributed, tailorable mix of sensors, weapons, and other mission equipment.”
It will “very much be” a “system of systems” approach for air-to-air combat, he said.
The unmanned bomber, on the other hand, is “more speculative.”
There’s “more work to do” to flesh the idea out, he said.
He clarified that the aircraft he has in mind isn’t necessarily an unmanned version of the B-21, which was “designed with an option to be unmanned.”
But it could be.
The unmanned bomber is to have “comparable range” to that of the B-21, with a “payload to be determined,” but it must be “operationally valuable and cost effective.”
It might accompany the B-21, he said.

Come Defense News riporta la notizia ...
The first B-21 Raider bomber has entered the ground test phase, paving the way for its expected rollout this year and subsequent first flight.
Northrop Grumman now has six of the stealthy, next-generation aircraft in various stages of production, Darlene Costello, principal deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition, technology and logistics, said in a Friday roundtable with reporters at the Air Force Association’s Air Warfare Symposium in Orlando, Florida.
Tom Jones, Northrop’s Aeronautics Systems president, also confirmed in a statement that the first Raider is now undergoing ground tests.
Costello said that with the start of testing on that B-21, “we are on track for first flight [and] we’re holding to our schedule.”
She would not go into further detail on plans for the B-21.
In another roundtable with reporters at the conference, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said he’s satisfied with the B-21′s progress so far.

Da AW&ST ...
As First B-21 Begins Ground Test, Plan For Uncrewed Teaming Emerges ...
Brian Everstine - March 09, 2022

The first Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider has rolled off its assembly line and will begin ground testing, just as the U.S. Air Force starts planning for a future uncrewed aircraft that will fly alongside the bomber with extra sensors or weapons.
Northrop and Air Force officials announced in early March that the first Raider to be used for developmental testing has started load testing and that the company will start powering on the aircraft for initial evaluations in a separate facility from the assembly line in Palmdale, California.
Additionally, the company said the sixth B-21 has entered assembly at Plant 42.
“Our first test aircraft has moved from the line and entered formal ground test,” Northrop Grumman Aeronautics President Tom Jones said in a statement.
“That’s a testament to the speed and efficiency we’re achieving on the program, in large part due to the partnership we have with our [Rapid Capabilities Office] and [Air Force Global Strike Command] customers and the innovative business practices and digital engineering we’re employing on the program.”
Darlene Costello, the Air Force’s acting assistant secretary for acquisition, says this progress indicates that the B-21 is still on schedule for a rollout this year, to be followed by the bomber’s first flight.
“Everything I’m hearing is we’re staying on track,” adds Gen. Arnold Bunch, head of the Air Force Materiel Command.
As the Air Force prepares to bring on the B-21, a team of developmental and operational test pilots is waiting at Edwards AFB, California, with the aim of identifying potential issues as soon as possible, says Maj. Gen. Evan Dertien, commander of the Air Force Test Center.
“The goal is to get, as soon as [possible], an operational pilot in there flying it, much earlier on in the program, [and] to start maybe identifying issues,” he says.
“But the whole goal is to get that capability tested quicker, get it exposed to a larger environment that’s operationally representative sooner, so we can identify [and] eliminate any early risks.”
As the testing begins, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall is ordering research on how the service can develop an uncrewed system to fly with the bomber.
As part of a series of operational imperatives, the Air Force in February released a request for information to define the B-21’s “family of systems.”
Kendall says he wants this system to cost about half of the B-21’s estimated $550 million-per-aircraft price tag, which will allow it to be “sacrificed” if that would be operationally useful.
That would never be an option with a crewed aircraft, he says.
Although that price is still high, Kendall says there needs to be a balance to keep the drone operationally effective.
“I’d love to have it be less than half,” he says. “I’d love to have it be a quarter . . . . At the end of the day, it’s a trade-off.”
The potential system, along with another for the Next-Generation Air Dominance fighter, builds on lessons from the Air Force’s Skyborg, DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution program and Boeing’s Loyal Wingman development.
Details in the request for information show, however, that the potential aircraft’s capability is beyond much of the current offerings.
“The technologies are there now to introduce uncrewed platforms in this system-of-systems context, but the most cost-effective approach and the operational concepts for this complement to crewed global strike capabilities have to be analyzed and defined,” Kendall says.
“One of the things that people often miss about uncrewed systems is that if you’re going to use an autonomous platform with a crewed system, it has to have range capability to go as far as the crewed system goes and support that system with a reasonable payload when it gets there.”

The US Air Force has awarded Northrop Grumman a $108 million contract for advance procurement in support of the B-21 Raider bomber program.
Advance procurement funds will directly support the acquisition of long lead items necessary to build the first lot of production B-21 aircraft.
Northrop Grumman is already working on six of the next-generation bombers after air force officials first revealed in September last year that five airframes were in construction.
In February this year, the air force confirmed a total of six bombers were in assembly at the service’s Plant 42 facility in Palmdale, California.
“The B-21 Raider program is foundational to the Air Force’s operational imperative for an effective, long-range strike family of systems to guarantee our ability to strike any target, anytime, anywhere, even in the most contested environment,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr.
