Seeing is Believing .....

Lockheed Martin issued an artist's rendering of its new C-130XJ transport concept.

Immagine
(Lockheed Martin posted an artist's rendering of its new C-130XJ transport concept at its Flickr website, Aug. 9, 2012.)

The company is marketing the new variant as a lower cost option to nations that might not be able to afford a full-up C-130J like those in the Air Force's inventory, or that do not have the same intense mission demands for an airlifter.

http://www.airforce-magazine.com/DRArch ... lHerk.aspx

The C-130XJ features the operational capabilities of the baseline C-130J, such as the same powerplants, company officials have said.

Among the differences, it would utilize the legacy cargo-handling system used on older C-130 models in place of the C-130J's fully automated cargo-handling system and underfloor winch, they have said.

:welcome1:

Immagine

Immagine
Winglets .....

Winglets are one promising option that turned up on the C-130, C-5, and P-3. Winglets are the upturned wingtip devices that improve the efficiency of fixed-wing aircraft by reducing drag through partial recovery of the vortex energy created by the airstream as it goes over the wingtip. These devices also increase the effective aspect ratio—that is, wing length-to-chord—without materially increasing wingspan.

That winglets work can be seen in the fact that commercial airlines—a notoriously penny-pinching bunch—have been buying new aircraft designed with winglets for the past decade. The Deltas and Americans of the world have also recently started retrofitting winglets to many of their older aircraft.

A combination of CFD studies and actual wind tunnel testing was conducted for both the C-130 and P-3. CFD was also used on the C-5. However, a large, high speed wind tunnel is required to determine winglet effectiveness accurately for that very large transport.

More than 400 variations of C-130 winglets were evaluated through CFD, and the most promising models were then tested extensively in the wind tunnel. The design was then optimized to minimize induced wing loading and to maximize aerodynamic benefits. The data collected during the wind tunnel testing verified the CFD predictions.

The optimal C-130 winglet design stands about five feet tall and adds about five feet to the 132-foot wingspan of a Herk. Predicted results show either about a four percent increase in range for a C-130J on a long-range cruise mission with a 17,250 pound payload or about a twenty-one gallon per hour reduction in fuel consumption on a typical 2,500 nautical mile mission with a 20,000 pound payload.

A set of trial winglets, made of composite material and aluminum, will be ready for flight test in late 2012. The Process Development Center, a Lockheed Martin rapid prototyping center at its Fort Worth, Texas, facility, built the prototypes.

“The microvanes, the lift distribution control system, and the winglets all provide benefits in different parts of the flight regime, but they offer significant net savings. Combined, they could result in saving fifty gallons of fuel per hour,” noted Hybart. “In terms of seeing these improvements on a C-130, I think the microvanes could be near-term. LDCS and winglets are probably a little farther out.”

The Guns from Navarone .....

An Air Force civilian saved Air Force Special Operations Command more than $14 million by finding a 1950s-era cache of rare 40 mm gun parts in Greece for AC-130 gunships, according to a command release.

The US military phased the modified M2 A1 cannons out of service except for AFSOC, and replacement barrels alone would cost some $1.3 million each to custom manufacture, states the Jan. 15 release.

"The Greek army retired the weapon in 2005, so the parts were just sitting in a warehouse," said Bill Walter, AFSOC strike program analyst who found the parts with US Army help.

"I spent two days combing through several arsenals" in Greece before preparing to ship the parts to Eglin AFB, Fla., last December, he added.

Walter's team recovered 139 barrels and enough parts to last the remaining service life of these guns on the gunships, states the release.

"With the exception of shipping, these parts were free of charge," said Walter.

C-130J ..... contratto pluriennale in vista .....
Lockheed Martin is close to securing a multi-year contract for C-130J procurement with the US air force, with the company saying a verbal agreement has been reached with the service for 78 firm orders, plus five contract options.
That total includes 72 aircraft for the USAF and six KC-130J tankers for the US Marine Corps, according to the company.
The US Coast Guard would exercise the contract options if it decides to continue updating from its HC-130H search-and-rescue fleet.

"MC-130J Amphibious Capability (MAC)" ... ritorna a galla la vecchia proposta di realizzare una variante anfibia dell'Hercules ...
The U.S. military is once again looking at the potential of an amphibious C-130 Hercules variant to operate from littoral areas in support of special operations forces.
The project, which in its early stages, has yielded an artist’s concept of an MC-130J Commando II multi-mission combat transport fitted with large underslung floats mounted on the fuselage.
The MC-130J is the latest Air Force special operations version of the Hercules, intended to penetrate into denied areas to insert, extract, or resupply special operations forces, as well as refuel helicopters and tilt-rotor aircraft.
The new effort, known as the MC-130J Amphibious Capability, or MAC, came to light today in a briefing given by U.S. Air Force Colonel Ken Kuebler, U.S. Special Operations Command’s (SOCOM) Program Executive Officer for Fixed Wing (PEO-FW), at the annual Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC).
At a media roundtable later in the day, Kuebler added that feasibility and operational studies regarding the project are going on now and that the command is working with unspecified “innovative partners” to hopefully prove out a lot of the concept using digital design tools.
This, in turn, could help speed up the research and development and help keep costs low.

The Air Force is looking beyond the venerable C-130 for tactical airlift missions, saying the airplane no longer meets its needs for a future of dispersed operating locations where a runway may not be available.
Under typical questioning from members anxious about continuing C-130 missions for Guard and Reserve units in their districts, service “futurist” Lt. Gen. S. Clinton Hinote told the House Armed Services seapower and projection forces panel the Air Force no longer views the C-130 as “well suited” to the future tactical airlift mission, and it needs to replace it with “new capabilities” involving vertical lift technologies.
“There’s been a lot of discussion about tactical airlift in the future, and I think it’s important for me, as the Air Force’s futurist, to say something about it,” said Hinote, whose title is deputy chief of staff for strategy, integration, and requirements.
In wargaming scenarios with China, and given the Air Force’s plan to island- and location-hop to avoid enemy missiles, “we run significant risk in [tactical] airlift, especially in conducting logistics under attack,” Hinote said.
The “C-130 capability is not well-suited to address this risk,” he said.
“That’s why we feel we need to retire a certain number of the older C-130s, while addressing this airlift risk in new ways, with new capabilities.”

Back in May, we reported on the fact that U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) really wanted to make the long-standing dream of a C-130 seaplane a reality.
In fact, the so-called MC-130J Amphibious Capability, or MAC, was listed as one of its new procurement priorities.
While we had a grainy little rendering of what this could look like when we filed that report, as well as other historical design concepts, we now have a far better look at exactly what they want, and yes, it is a C-130 on floats.
Actually, they have put forward a number of similar floatplane concepts, some more traditional looking while others are more streamlined, conformal, and futuristic looking.
The capability appears to include the requirement for amphibious operations.
In other words, the MC-130 can still land on a runway with the floats fitted.

Hercules history is made once again, with the announcement that Lockheed Martin recently delivered its 500th C-130J Super Hercules airlifter.
This Super Hercules (Lockheed Martin aircraft #5934) is a C-130J-30 aircraft assigned to the 130th Airlift Wing located at McLaughlin Air National Guard Base in Charleston, West Virginia.
The 130th Airlift Wing is a longtime C-130 operator that is currently modernizing its legacy Hercules fleet with C-130Js.
The U.S. government operates the largest C-130J Super Hercules fleet in the world.
This delivery represents the U.S. government's continued transition to the C-130J as the common platform across the Air Force, the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard.

Air Force Special Operations Command plans to demonstrate an amphibious version of the MC-130J Hercules by the end of next year, AFSOC’s commander told reporters Monday morning at the Air Force Association convention.
“I can say with certainty that our plan is to conduct a demo by the 31st of December next year.,” AFSOC commander Lt. Gen. Jim Slife said in a roundtable with media on Sept. 20.
Slife emphasized that a flying demo would most likely feature a single aircraft and would be aimed at validating digitally engineered models that the program has run so far on the aircraft’s capabilities.
The variant of the MC-130J capable of landing on water the aircraft would be better equipped for a wider breadth of missions as the Pentagon shifts focus to littoral regions, per a Sept. 14 statement.
The development has been dubbed the MC-130J Amphibious Capability, or MAC.
The latest rendered illustrations of the proposed model feature large, removable floats that would allow the aircraft to take off and land on both bodies of water and runway independent locations.
In allowing significantly greater to non-traditional takeoff and landing areas, MAC would also help curtail aircraft vulnerability by avoiding easily-targetable locations.

C-130H ... grossi problemi con le eliche ...
Air Mobility Command and Air Combat Command confirmed that they have grounded their C-130H variants with older propeller systems after discovering cracked parts - and AMC is considering accelerating the production and installation of new propellers to replace them.
All told, up to 116 C-130Hs could be affected as AMC waits for field-level inspections of the aircraft to assess the scope of the problem, spokesperson Maj. Beau Downey told Air & Space Forces Magazine.
A “post-depot operation engine run check” at Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, Ga., first revealed the issue when a maintenance crew discovered a leak from one of the propellers, Downey said.
A further inspection found a crack in the propeller barrel assembly, and the same issue was subsequently discovered in two more propeller assemblies.

With no end in sight for the grounding of virtually the entire fleet of older C-130H Hercules, the Air Force is turning to other aircraft and trying to find other workarounds to keep its mobility missions moving.
But the Air Force can’t say how long it will be before most or all of the grounded C-130Hs will be back in the air.
Replacement parts to end the groundings are in short supply.
In the meantime, the service is trying to figure out how it can get newer replacement propeller assemblies into grounded C-130Hs faster, weighing which grounded planes are safe to return to flight status with their older propeller assemblies intact, and prioritizing missions for the workarounds.

The U.S. Air Force has started to return some of its 116 grounded C-130H mobility aircraft to flying status, but cautioned the process for getting the remainder back in the air will be slow going.
So far, two C-130Hs have been returned to service since the grounding began Sept. 27, Air Mobility Command spokesman Maj. Beau Downey said in a Friday email to Defense News.
One of those planes was returned to flying status after it was inspected and deemed airworthy, Downey said in a follow-up email.
The second had one “unserviceable” 54H60 propeller that needed to be replaced with a working one of the same model, he said.

Air Force maintainers examining the propellers on C-130H planes used electric arc etching pens to inscribe serial numbers once inspections were complete - and in doing so, likely caused the damage that has forced a grounding of the fleet.
That’s the conclusion Air Mobility Command has reached a month after it first ordered a safety stand-down of more than 100 C-130Hs with older propellers due to cracks in the propeller barrel assemblies.
“The process used to engrave serial numbers on the propellers caused the cracking that is being found on the C-130Hs. That process … involved an electric arc pen to incise digits into the surface of the metal,” AMC spokesperson Maj. Beau Downey told Air & Space Forces Magazine in a statement.
The practice of engraving the serial number on propeller parts is “standard,” Downey added, but the process for doing so isn’t always the same - sometimes maintainers use what he called an “acid wash,” chemically etching the number onto the part.
AMC Airmen first began using the electric arc etching pen process more than a decade ago and continued to do so up until six months ago.

The Air Force’s final MC-130H Combat Talon II, Tail Number 89-0280, made its last flight April 2, taking off from Hurlburt Field, Fla., with a crew including members of the 15th Special Operations Squadron and led by AFSOC commander Lt. Gen. Tony D. Bauernfeind, a long-time MC-130H pilot.
The Combat Talon II, a variant of the C-130H, was a stalwart special operations tanker and mobility aircraft used extensively for infiltration, exfiltration, and covert resupply for missions in hostile and denied territory from the early 1990s until now.
