The 1st Fighter Wing activated the 71st Fighter Training Squadron as a stand-alone unit to provide T-38 Talon adversary support to the wing's F-22 Raptors at JB Langley-Eustis, Va., in a ceremony Aug. 21.
"For a fraction of the cost, T-38s can provide training support, which not only saves money on training, but allows our F-22 pilots more flying hours," 71st FTS Commander Lt. Col. Brian Coyne said in a release .....
http://www.jble.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123456711
The wing's first T-38s arrived in 2011 and were flown on a rotating basis by 1st FW and Virginia Air National Guard 192nd FW F-22 pilots, sharing the 27th Fighter Squadron stable with the Raptors.
The newly minted 71st FTS boasts a fleet of 17 Talons for its dedicated adversary mission, according to the release.
The 71st FS "Ironmen" previously flew the F-15C/D Eagle from Langley for more than 30 years prior to the squadron's inactivation in 2010 as part of Langley's transition to the F-22.

Concerns about potentially faulty ejection seat parts have prompted the Air Force to ground 279 trainer aircraft until inspections can be performed to assure that the aircraft are safe to fly.
The grounding, which went into effect July 27, affects nearly half the T-38 fleet.
The 203 T-38 Talons and 76 T-6 Texan IIs potentially affected are grounded until further notice “out of an abundance of caution,” Air Education and Training Command’s 19th Air Force commander Maj. Gen. Craig Wills said in an emailed statement.
“We will not return aircraft affected by this issue to the flying schedule until we’re confident their escape systems are fully functional,” he said.
“Our instructor pilots accomplish an incredibly important and demanding mission every day, and we owe them safe and reliable aircraft.”

The T-38 Talon was the world’s first supersonic jet trainer.
Airmen and astronauts have flown it.
It entered service with the U.S. Air Force in 1961, and nearly 1,200 were produced.
After more than six decades, the venerable trainer finally has a replacement in the T-7 Red Hawk.
It also finally has a place in the world’s premiere aerospace museum thanks to a remarkable female pioneer (*).
When the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C., reopens to the public Oct. 14, it will showcase a T-38 for the first time.
The Smithsonian received the plane from the Air Force in 2004.
It was stored outside of public view but was recently restored and briefly displayed at the museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., to prepare it for its place in the nation’s capital.

A T-38A Talon jet trainer of the 14th Flying Training Wing crashed near its home of Columbus Air Force Base, Miss., about 2:30 p.m. local time Nov. 7.
The pilot ejected and survived, a base spokesperson said.
No one on the ground was hurt.
The T-38 experienced “an in-flight emergency” and went down near Danelly Field, an Air National Guard Base near Montgomery, Ala., the spokesperson said, but details of the mishap will await the results of an investigation now underway.
The pilot, whose name was withheld pending further inquiry, was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Only one pilot was flying the two-seat, supersonic aircraft.
Technical Problems Push T-7A Production Decision Back At Least One Year …) ...
The supersonic T-38, built by Northrop, entered service in 1960 and has been modified a number of times to restore its structural strength and improve its training capabilities.
The Air Force is developing the Boeing T-7A to take its place, but the T-38 fleet is not expected to be fully retired until about 2030.
