Industry Heads to Wright-Patt to Discuss T-X .....

Members of industry will gather on Tuesday at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, for several days of discussions on the options available for T-X, the Air Force's next-generation Advanced Pilot Training family of systems.

T-X is envisioned as the replacement to the service's aging fleet of T-38 trainers.

Although a needed capability, Air Force officials have acknowledged that replacing the T-38s remains a secondary priority as budgets tighten.

http://www.airforce-magazine.com/DRArch ... nWait.aspx

"The purpose of this event is to broaden United States Air Force knowledge on the depth, breadth and dynamics of the market, communicate to industry pre-decisional information on the Advanced Pilot Training family of systems, and allow industry to offer candid feedback, especially with respect to affordability and costs versus capability analyses currently being conducted by the government program team," states the notice posted at the Federal Business Opportunities website.

https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity ... e&_cview=0

A Wright-Patt spokesman confirmed to the Daily Report on Jan. 28 that the event was still on.

AW&ST:
On the Air Force’s T-X trainer program, could you provide more detail about what Boeing brings to the table that is different from competitors’ off-the-shelf view, rather than a clean-sheet design?

Chadwick:
We absolutely believe we have a competitive differentiator on the T-X next-generation Air Force trainer, from a couple of different perspectives.
Our partner, Saab, brings a different design-develop mind-set.
It is that collision of ideas that is helping us see better ways of designing in a more-for-less world.
Our design is completely tuned to the U.S. Air Force and its requirements and needs, and our competitors’ are not.
Their products were designed and developed for someone else’s air force.
They are going to have to make modifications, go back through flight test.
They will have to add capability, perhaps take capability out, which will have a cost impact.
We believe that from a cost perspective, we will have an advantage.

The T-X is In .....

(John A. Tirpak - 9/19/2014)

After countless attempts to get a replacement for the T-38 Talon, the T-X trainer program is finally in the Air Force budget that just went to the Pentagon leadership, Air Education and Training Command chief Gen. Robin Rand said Wednesday.
“The Chief and the Secretary insisted” the T-X be part of the Future Years Defense Plan, Rand said in remarks at AFA’s Air & Space Conference in National Harbor, Md.
While he couldn’t specify the amount requested, Rand said it will grow rapidly in the coming years, and is aimed toward providing a capability in the early 2020s.
Requirements are being developed now—very much in partnership with industry—and will be completed next summer, Rand reported.
The T-X will have other roles besides undergraduate pilot training, but those—such as lead-in fighter training, service as an Aggressor aircraft, for example—are still being hashed out, Rand said.
USAF will be “as transparent as we can” with industry to ensure the requirements are thoroughly understood, he said, but he denied there is any preference for an off-the-shelf solution.
The successful airplane will have to provide a good “bridge” for students going on to fifth generation F-22 and F-35 fighters, he added.
It will also have to play in the live-virtual-constructive training systems now being developed.

Deep in the Heart of T-Xs .....

John A. Tirpak - 11/20/2014

Although the Air Force has hinted it would only look at proven, off-the-shelf trainers for its upcoming T-X competition, a clean-sheet design hasn't been ruled out, said Lt. Gen. Ellen Pawlikowski, the Air Force's military deputy for acquisition, on Wednesday. (*)

(*) ..... http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... owski.aspx

Speaking with defense reporters in Washington, D.C., Pawlikowski said she wants to “keep the trade space completely open” and will consider a new design if it offers the optimum combination of performance and cost.
She said it’s likely that any off-the-shelf design would require “some development work” to optimize it for the Air Force's use, so the cost difference may not be as large as one might expect, but a new design would also have to be available in the needed timeframe.
Just as important will be how well the aircraft can transition pilots to fifth generation combat aircraft like the F-22 and F-35, and how much of the syllabus can be accomplished with an associated simulator, said Pawlikowski.
The Air Force's acquisition shop is working with Air Education and Training Command "on the cost/capability curves" and "we are still tweaking the requirements," she added.

In an effort to reduce cost and speed up its often snail-paced acquisition system, the US Air Force intends to water down the capabilities it expects to see in a new jet trainer, as well as several other ongoing acquisition programmes.
USAF Secretary Deborah Lee James said on 14 January that the Air Force is specifically targeting four programmes for capabilities downgrades, including the T-X trainer replacement for the Northrop Grumman T-38 jet trainer.
Also in the crosshairs of the so-called cost-capability analysis (CCA) programme are the long-range standoff weapon, the follow-on to the space-based infrared system (SIBRS) and the multi-domain adaptable processing system (MAPS), which is envisioned as a pod to enable communications between stealth fighters.

Budget Funds T-X .....

(2/4/2015)

Though Air Force budget documents released Monday did not call out funding for the new T-X trainer, "It's in there ... at the BCA level," Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh said in an interview with Air Force Magazine.
The BCA is the Budget Control Act, or sequester-level of funding.
"T-X is kind of existential to us, and it's time we do this, so it's included in the budget," he said.
Welsh said a choice of a platform will be made in Fiscal 2018, and initial operational capability is planned for 2023.
An Air Force spokeswoman said the T-X is funded for $628 million across the Future Years' Defense Plan.
In Fiscal 2016 and 2017, planned spending is $11.4 million and $12.2 million, respectively.
In Fiscal 2018, the figure balloons to $17.2 million, more than doubling in FY'19 funding to $262.8 million.
The fiscal year 2020 figure is $275.9 million.
The spokeswoman said the strategy is to "take advantage of existing and emerging industry-developed aircraft to reduce the cost and time to field the T-X."

La sorpresa di Northrop Grumman ..... ovvero ..... l'azienda USA molla, non a torto, il Bae Hawk ..... e punta a dare un degno successore alla sua fortunata famiglia T-38/F-5 .....

Immagine
A Northrop Grumman-led team is dashing its plan to propose a modified BAE Systems Hawk trainer for the U.S. Air Force’s T-38 replacement program, opting instead for a clean-sheet design for the $1 billion program.
The shift is more bold than it is surprising.
The team is paying for a brand-new prototype despite a slump in defense spending.
But it has become increasingly evident that the Hawk is unsuited for the mission due to shortfalls in the fast-jet trainer’s ability to sustain Gs, perform high angle-of-attack maneuvering and execute tight turn rate and radius.

Northrop Grumman has opted to design a brand new aircraft for the US Air Force’s T-X trainer programme rather than a modified version of the BAE Systems Hawk it had planned to pitch.
Northrop has delegated the design work to Scaled Composites subsidiary, which is responsible for revolutionary aerospace innovations like the SpaceShipOne commercial space ship.
Development of the new aircraft is apparently well along.
Northrop says it will fly by the end of 2015.

Northrop Dumps Hawk for Clean-Sheet T-X .....

John A. Tirpak (2/9/2015)

Northrop Grumman has abandoned plans to offer the BAE Systems Hawk for the Air Force's upcoming T-X contest, in favor of an all-new jet being prototyped with the company's Scaled Composites division.
The aircraft "has been purpose-designed for the Air Force," a company spokesman told Air Force Magazine.
"We are in discussions with BAE Systems to include their training system in our aircraft solution.
L-3 Communications is responsible for the ground-based training system," the spokesman said.
The Hawk, he added, "Is a tremendous airplane; however, we decided as a team to offer a new design as the US Air Force continued to mature their requirements."
The Hawk, a venerable design dating back to the 1970s, was seen by some as unsuited to USAF's wish for a tight-turning airplane able to maneuver at high angles of attack, the better to prepare pilots for the F-35 and F-22.
Air Force Magazine queried Northrop Grumman in 2013 about whether the company was planning to adapt its privately-funded F-20 Tigershark—itself a derivative of Northrop's own F-5/T-38 series—for T-X.
The company said at the time it had no plans to do so.
However, in a cover image supplied to Aviation Week and Space Technology, Northrop Grumman portrayed an aircraft not unlike the F-20.
The spokesman said the image was "an artist's concept," without saying whether it truly represented the airplane that will be offered

:rightfighter5:

..... tutto a stelle e strisce ..... :usa2:
