Un lettore scrive a AW&ST ..... e fa alcune interessanti considerazioni su quello che potrebbe bollire in pentola in casa Boeing/Saab .....
Tracking T-X Requirements .....

The speculation surrounding Boeing’s T-X trainer aircraft is intriguing (AW&ST Aug. 3-16, p. 25).
The U.S. Air Force’s T-X requirements are nearly identical to what might have been written for a fifth-generation lightweight fighter.
When Boeing announced they would submit a new design in collaboration with Saab, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman undoubtedly understood the nature of the challenge.
Saab had been developing the FS 2020 concept for some time; extrapolations of it were explored with both Turkey and South Korea.
The study was quite mature - there was even a subscale model (*) flying - and Boeing was aware that its basic parameters matched USAF requirements to an unusual degree.
The GE F-414 engine is a known entity with an already scheduled set of future upgrades and its weapons integration capability is enviable not, to mention its cost; the Swedish systems suite already programmed for the Saab Gripen E parallels USAF requirements.
Boeing brings to the table its upgrades for the F-15 and particularly the Super Hornet, with design experience in conformal fuel tanks and weapons packs, as well as with U.S. systems and weapons suites, training simulators and related curriculum.
Finally, this pairing offers a long-range development program reflecting some obvious future requirements far beyond the advanced training needs.
The result is a potentially very large production base with concomitant cost reductions that combine to form a very attractive T-X program that will be hard to beat.
The T-X will have to meet training requirements not only for the F-22 and the F-35 but ultimately for the future FX and A/FXX.
The FS 2020 derivative is literally the minimum airframe and systems/weapons adaptability that could realistically meet the projected future requirements, so the above pretty much should be the expected Boeing/Saab submission.
The counteroffers will be what should intrigue observers.

Una prima occhiata al T-X ..... ma soltanto per pochi ..... ed accuratamente selezionati .....
Boeing is bringing the first tease of its T-X trainer design to next week's Air Force Association conference outside of Washington — but only a select few will get to see it.
The company is bringing a T-X demonstrator trailer to the conference, held annually in National Harbor, Maryland.
Boeing is partnering with Saab on the design.
----- ----- ----- ----- -----
The T-X trailer will be invite-only, and a Boeing official said there are no plans to display the design through models or artwork at the company's booth — meaning the specifications of the plane remain a closely-guarded secret.

Northrop Grumman ..... la strada per la sopravvivenza passa attraverso il programma T-X .....
Northrop Grumman's decision to launch a clean-sheet design for the Air Force's T-X trainer replacement program caught the aviation industry off-guard.
The new design, which is already in production and will fly this year, seemed to come out of nowhere, especially since the company had been promoting the BAE Hawk trainer system as its option for the T-X competition over the past four years.
But while a surprise, the announcement actually fits with the plan Northrop's aerospace division has been putting together in recent years.
The division has quietly reshaped itself into one that is banking on rapid prototyping and creative designs to help it win a series of key competitions that analysts say will determine nothing less than whether the company continues to produce military aircraft.

Il ruolo chiave dei simulatori .....
T-X award to focus on simulator capability .....

Brian Everstine (09/16/2015)

One of the main deciding factors for the next-generation training aircraft will be how good the system’s simulators will be, in addition to how the aircraft performs in the air, Lt. Gen. Darryl Roberson, the commander of Air Education and Training Command, told reporters Sept. 15 at ASC15.
The need for high-level training in threatened environments makes the need for simulators with enough fidelity to replicate intense training in anti-access/area-denial situations.
“We in AETC are focused on getting the state of the art capability in the virtual constructive environment so we can, from the beginning, train to a level that’s going to allow us to fight in that (high-threat) environment,” Roberson said.
The T-X’s simulators will need to get a pilot so into a mission that he can’t tell “he’s not out flying in the airplane for real,” he said.
AETC has worked to be open with contractors on the changing requirements for the system.
The T-X contract award is expected in 2017.

The T-X design by Boeing and its partner Saab has been a closely guarded secret, but Defense News has an exclusive first look at concept art for the design.
As you can see, there isn’t all that much there — just the nose of the plane — but it largely conforms to the long nose design of the T-38, which the T-X will replace.
It’s a bit of a tease, but that lines up with how Boeing had handled press for AFA. The company has brought a trailer for the program, but has restricted access to VIPs — primarily service officials — and until now has resisted discussing or sharing any design details.

An industry source with knowledge of the situation said that Alenia and Raytheon have had ongoing talks about the possibility of joining forces for a T-X bid.
The source was not clear if a final agreement had been reached. Italian sources, meanwhile, have hinted for some time that a new prime for the T-100 bid is in the works.

In the president's budget request, there is a small amount of funding under T-X for using it as an aggressor training system.
Rand, however, insisted that the program is focused solely on advanced pilot training requirements.
"If there's any money in there, it's not come to my attention, it wouldn't be under my purview, because I'm not the person who is going to make those decisions," he said.
"We're working hard to make sure we stay to the requirements for advanced pilot training.
"There is no decision that's been made yet to use the T-X in any other capacity," Rand added.
"There will be discussions, but that's not been decided."
He added that there is no requirement to decide about other uses for T-X this year.

In a conversation with Defense News at last week's Air Force Association conference outside of Washington, a pair of US Air Force officials revealed that Raytheon has been involved in discussions with the service about the T-X program since before May.

Officials cautioned that the model displayed at its facility here was not fully representative of the final configuration.
However, the model indicates Northrop’s offering would be a low-wing, single-engine aircraft with side-mounted inlets and a conventional horizontal and vertical tail.
Similar to the T-38, the design also incorporated area ruling of the fuselage aft of the inlets for transonic capability and a notably tall vertical fin, as well as a distinct dorsal spine.
The fuselage indicated a flattened nose-on profile with a semi-chined forebody.
Dunque ..... monomotore .....

Se Northrop Grumman si lascia andare a qualche scarna rivelazione ..... Boeing preferisce invece continuare a mantenere il più stretto riserbo .....
Boeing Phantom Works president Darryl Davis is refusing to take Northrop’s bait by disclosing new information about his advanced research and design unit’s secretive “T-X” and future fighter projects.
In an interview with Flightglobal in Washington this week, Davis stayed tight-lipped on when the company intends to fly the clean-sheet, next-generation trainer it is developing with Saab for the air force.
The most that has been revealed about the Boeing T-X alternative is an artist’s impression of the twin-seat advanced pilot trainer’s long nose and forward cockpit. (*)
More was revealed to VIPs attending the Air Warfare Symposium in September, but reporters were not granted access.

Il giorno in cui LM venne presa in contropiede .....
Earlier this year, the company disclosed that its Skunk Works advanced design and development division had also been working on a clean-sheet alternative as a back-up if the air force’s performance specifications for the next-generation replacement for the 55-year-old Northrop T-38 evolve.
Although Lockheed’s long-term relationship with Korea through the country’s indigenous T-50 programme has been expected to form the basis for its T-X offering, Skunk Works declines to confirm that the clean-sheet offer is off the table for the $8 billion new-build trainer contest.
The unveiling at KAI’s Sacheon facility came as somewhat of a surprise, with no advanced notices sent to aerospace reporters by either company, and no Lockheed press release.
The event was attended by a mostly South Korean audience, including the country's president Park Guen-Hye.

LM invita la stampa ..... in vista di chiarimenti .....
Lockheed Martin might finally put to rest whether it intends to offer the Korea Aerospace Industries T-50 or a separate clean-sheet design for the US Air Force’s upcoming advanced pilot training competition known as T-X.
The company has invited media to its Washington DC-based flight demonstration centre next week for an announcement regarding the competition.
An invitation sent out on 3 February carries a darkened forward section off an aircraft that is strikingly similar to the KAI T-50.
Though long partnered with its Korean counterpart for the competition, Lockheed’s Skunk Works advanced design and development division is known to have been working on a clean-sheet alternative, should the air force’s requirements not favour the T-50.
