Primo incontro ... [smilie=be mine!.gif]
Members of the U.S. Air Force 1st Helicopter Squadron here got their first look at the MH-139A Grey Wolf in Richmond, Virginia, as it made its way from the Boeing production line in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Duke Field, Florida.
Pilots from Boeing and Air Force Global Strike Command’s Detachment 7 jointly ferried the aircraft to its first stop, where it met its predecessor -- a 1st Helicopter Squadron Huey.
The MH-139A was on its way to Duke Field, where developmental test operations are being conducted by Boeing and the 413th Flight Test Squadron supported by AFGSC Detachment 7.
“Since the Air Force announced the fleet replacement of the Huey last December, our team has been waiting in anticipation to have eyes-on our future asset,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Anne-Marie Contreras, 316th Operations Group commander.
“We are so impressed with the partnership Global Strike Command has extended to us to make sure our mission requirements are met with the Grey Wolf.”

The Air Force did not request to buy any new MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters in its fiscal 2022 budget and fielding will be delayed as the service waits to receive Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification.
The Air Force bought eight of the new helicopters in 2021, and previous budget documents called for the purchase of eight more in 2022, before the certification delay.
“The FAA requires the MH-139A to obtain an updated certification, because it is a commercial derivative aircraft with military unique equipment that requires certification,” the service said in a statement.

Air Force Global Strike Command boss Gen. Timothy M. Ray said the Air Force did not include any new MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters in its fiscal 2022 budget request because of certification delays related to the pandemic.
Ray said the issue with the helicopter, which the command will use to support and provide security for its missile fields, is more “a matter of paperwork” due to delays in Europe stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic than any technical issues with the aircraft.
“I spent some time talking to Boeing about this three weeks ago,” Ray said during a June 3 virtual event hosted by AFA’s Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.
“I would characterize these problems as administrative certifications, not terribly technical in nature. [It’s] not very complicated technology.”

MH-139 Grey Wolf ... qualcosa si muove ...
After months of unexpected delays, the Air Force’s MH-139 Grey Wolf is set to enter military utility testing within the coming month, a service program officer said.
The Air Force first announced flight testing of the Grey Wolf, intended to patrol the service’s sprawling intercontinental ballistic missile fields, in February 2020, and the service was hoping to declare initial operating capability by 2021.
Those plans were delayed, however, when the helicopter ran into trouble getting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification.
As a result, the Air Force’s planned purchase of eight helicopters in fiscal 2021 was delayed, and the buy in fiscal 2022 was skipped completely, the service announced in June 2021.
The FAA certification process has moved slowly since then, but a number of key supplemental type certifications were approved recently, Joe Lask, deputy division chief of helicopter programs for the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, told reporters at the Life Cycle Industry Days conference Aug. 10.

The Air Force’s new MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopter is at risk of not meeting “operational effectiveness requirements,” the Defense Department’s chief weapons tester declared in a new report.
Problems with the automatic flight control system, sensor display, and intercom system, along with its cabin layout and “restrictions on takeoffs in crosswinds or near obstacles” have raised concerns during ground and flight testing.
The DOD Office of the Director of Operational Test & Evaluation (DOT&E) 412-page annual report, released Jan. 19, covers more than 240 programs the office reviewed in the past year.
Its conclusions and recommendations on the Grey Wolf were not previously widely known.
DOT&E questioned the MH-139 program’s testing regimen, including both the amount of testing leading up to a key milestone and the enduring need for ballistic and electromagnetic testing.
The MH-139 is intended to replace the Air Force’s aging UH-1N Huey helicopters used by security forces to support the service’s missile fields and also to transport government and visiting officials around the Washington, D.C., area.
Based on the AgustaWestland AW139 civilian helicopter, it is supposed to offer enhanced performance, which requires testing to prove crews can “operate up to the edge of the allowed operating envelope.”

After months of delays and a new report raising questions about its worthiness, the Air Force is nearing a key production decision for its new MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopter - and laying the groundwork to ensure forces are ready when it arrives.
The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center said it is “on track” for the “Milestone C” production decision in February or March, AFLCMC spokesman Brian Brackens confirmed to Air & Space Forces Magazine.
Military flight testing began in August after a yearlong FAA certification delay.
Last week, in its annual report, the Pentagon’s Office of the Director of Operational Test & Evaluation (DOT&E) warned there might not be enough time for testing before the anticipated production decision.
But Brackens said in an email that the production decision won’t come until the Air Force has “performed sufficient flight testing to enable completion of all Milestone C entry criteria.”
Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., will be the first operational base for the Grey Wolf aircraft and will host much of the operational testing, while Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., will host the MH-139’s Formal Training Unit.

Boeing fornirà fino a 80 elicotteri MH-139A Grey Wolf all’Air Force.
