Stanno lavorando alla messa punto del programma ed hanno stilato un calendario dei lavori ..... ma l'entrata in servizio è ancora lontana .....
Requirements Review For Rescue Helicopter .....

Marc V. Schanz (4/14/2015)

Air Combat Command officials have made progress in defining key requirements for the HH-60W Combat Rescue Helicopter since the Air Force awarded the $1.28 billion development contract to Sikorsky Aircraft last June, ACC officials told Air Force Magazine.
The HH-60W program's system requirements review is underway, said Maj. Joel Soukup, rotary wing branch chief in ACC's personnel recovery requirements division.
ACC anticipates that the preliminary design review will be held by April 2016, with the critical design review taking place by spring 2017.
HH-60W flight testing is scheduled for Fiscal 2019, added Soukup in the recent interview, with the target of Fiscal 2021 for having the first unit of combat-ready HH-60Ws available for use.

Programmers have a good amount of confidence in the schedule because many of the variables the program office must work out are "non-developmental," he said, since the HH-60W is modeled on the same airframe as the service's existing HH-60G Pave Hawk.
"The state of the program is very good, and we have a way forward," said William Young, ACC's personnel recovery weapons systems division chief.
"We recognize the CRH is not a revolutionary leap in technology; it's more evolutionary," he added.
Nonetheless, when fielded, it will be "the most modern rescue helicopter in the world … with a ton of capability that the Air Force has never had," said Young.

Don’t Let the Airframe Fool You .....

Marc V. Schanz (4/14/2015)

Although the Air Force's new HH-60W Combat Rescue Helicopter is a slimmed-down reboot of the cancelled CSAR-X rescue platform, the CRH will share many of its performance requirements, Air Combat Command officials told Air Force Magazine.
While the HH-60W will be built on Sikorsky's H-60 airframe, "it will be different in many ways" from the Air Force's legacy HH-60G Pave Hawk model, said William Young, ACC's personnel recovery weapons systems requirements chief.
The payload, for starters, is an area of improvement, said Maj. Joel Soukup, rotary wing branch chief in ACC's personnel recovery requirements shop.
ACC wants the HH-60W to be able to pick up two patients simultaneously on more mission profiles.
Currently, with a fully loaded maximum gross weight of around 22,000 pounds for systems, crew, and fuel, the HH-60G is dependent on air refueling support to execute longer and higher flying missions, said Soukup.
Personnel recovery planners also want to integrate sensors and flight systems more uniformly in the HH-60W, he said.
This equipment is far more "federated" in the Pave Hawk, he noted.
Planners also want upgrades to defensive systems, to provide better field of view for the flight crew to detect threats.
The new platform, most importantly, will offer improvements in maintainability, said Soukup.
HH-60G mission-capable rates are floating around 75 percent and fleet availability is around 59 percent, as of early April, according to ACC.

The latest variant of the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is moving into the detailed design phase after successfully passing an air vehicle preliminary design review (PDR) by the US government.
The US Air Force is buying 112 HH-60W Combat Rescue Helicopters to replace the HH-60G Pave Hawk that was introduced under the Reagan administration in the 1980s.
The Sikorsky design was selected in late 2013 and a $1.2 billion development contract that funds four pre-production examples and six aircrew and maintenance trainers was awarded in July 2014.

Passi avanti .....
Lockheed Martin has reached the Air Vehicle Critical Design Review for the US Air Force’s new Combat Rescue Helicopter (CRH) program.
This event prepares the program to proceed to assembly, test, and evaluation of the new HH-60W helicopter.
The joint Sikorsky and USAF program team met in May with key partners from government and industry for an in-depth design review.
Throughout the review, the CRH team successfully presented a design that participants were confident would meet system requirements.
Review participants included leaders from USAF and key suppliers who took part in the technical presentations.

USAF e Sikorsky hanno fretta .....
The next generation of Air Force combat rescue is taking shape on a new Connecticut production line, where two development models of the HH-60W helicopter are undergoing final assembly ahead of flight testing late this year.
Sikorsky officials are confident in the progress on the helicopter, known in the factory as “Whiskey,” heartened by the Air Force’s budget request of $1.14 billion in Fiscal 2019.
The funds will help accelerate development and shrink the deployment schedule.
When the original $1.28 billion contract for engineering, manufacturing, and development for the helicopter was awarded in June 2014, it launched a 75-month program aimed at delivery on Sept. 26, 2020.
With the additional funding and progress made so far, Sikorsky is now executing a schedule that would bring the Milestone C production decision in the third quarter of 2019, and delivery in March 2020.

HH-60W ... ci siamo quasi ...

Immagine
After 17 years of continuous operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, the US Air Force’s combat rescue workhorse, the Sikorsky HH-60G Pave Hawk, is looking tired.
The 96-helicopter fleet has far outlived its average per-aircraft life expectancy of 6,000 flight hours, with each rotorcraft now averaging 7,100h, according to an August report by the US Government Accountability Office (*).
Only about 68% of the fleet was mission-capable in fiscal year 2017: below the USAF’s desired 75%.
The Pave Hawk is becoming harder to maintain.
Airframe, turboshaft engine, and flight control failures are common, says the GAO.
On average, the fleet spent 332 days in depot-level maintenance in FY2017, compared with 233 days in FY2007 – a more than 40% increase.
“The biggest impact has been the burden on our maintainers, the sustainment when we are not flying,” says Lt Col Charles McMullen, a USAF Pave Hawk pilot.
“The aircraft go through maintenance cycles much faster. The cost to sustain those airframes as components get older is also going up.”
Fortunately, by as early as this December Sikorsky hopes it will be able to test fly the aircraft’s replacement, the HH-60W.
The new Pave Hawk II – or Whiskey – variant boasts longer range, with a 2,500 litre (660USgal) internal fuel tank, and a specially-developed tactical mission kit that will give pilots and pararescue crew information from a phalanx of sensors.

Issues in testing have pushed back the first flight of the Air Force’s Combat Rescue Helicopter program and could further delay a production decision, though the prime manufacturer has previously pushed to accelerate the program.
The Air Force in June 2014 awarded Sikorsky the original contract for the Combat Rescue Helicopter, with delivery scheduled for September 2020.
The company told Air Force Magazine last spring that based on the progress it has made, it could accelerate the production decision to the third quarter of 2019, with first delivery in March 2020.
Sikorsky is developing the HH-60W helicopter, known as Pave Hawk II, based on the current Black Hawk but with several upgrades.
However, those upgrades have run into issues in development and testing, the Defense Department’s director of operational test and evaluation said in its yearly evaluation of weapons systems.

Nearly 20 years after the Air Force first embarked on its search for a new combat search-and-rescue helicopter with the CSAR-X program, the helicopter that will replace the legacy HH-60G Pave Hawk flew for the first time May 17 in Florida.
Sikorsky’s HH-60W Combat Rescue Helicopter, based on the Army’s UH-60, is slated to replace an HH-60G fleet from the 1980s in a $7.1 billion procurement program that includes 112 combat, test, and training assets.
Over more than an hour, the initial flight test proved whether the Pave Hawk II could perform basic vertical-lift maneuvers: going forward, braking, left- and right-hand turns, hovering, speeding forward, back, left and right, automated pitch and roll moves, accelerating from 10 knots to 100 knots, turning at 80 knots, and more, said Greg Hames, Sikorsky’s CRH program manager.

Alto senso della tradizione o, piuttosto, mancanza di fantasia ?
The Air Force’s new combat rescue helicopter will be named Jolly Green II.
The new helicopter, slated to replace the HH-60G Pave Hawk, will carry on the name of the venerable Vietnam-era HH-3E, which flew combat rescue missions from 1967 to 1995.
Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett unveiled the name during her keynote at AFA’s Air Warfare Symposium in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 27 with an early production model on-site.
The new helicopter honors the history of combat search and rescue, with Barrett highlighting missions from Vietnam - when crews with limited equipment made dramatic rescues due to their “bravery and tenacity” - to a heroic flight of Jolly 4-1 and Jolly 4-2 to rescue U.S. special operations troops under fire in Somalia.
“The Jolly Green crews never lacked audacity or courage,” Barrett said.

Sono appena entrati in servizio e già hanno bisogno di un "upgrade" miliardario ...
Enemy threats are outpacing development of the U.S. Air Force’s new Combat Rescue Helicopter (CRH), prompting the Air Force to offer Sikorsky nearly $1 billion for capability upgrades to the :D HH-60W just as it enters service.
“The government has a requirement for a new contract vehicle to address a broad spectrum of known and undefined CRH operational capabilities,” according to a justification document posted Feb. 11 on the U.S. government’s contracting website.
Under the potential five-year deal for rolling capability upgrades to both the helicopter’s hardware and software systems, Sikorsky — owned by Lockheed Martin — stands to receive up to $980 million.
The Air Force already has taken delivery of two HH-60W helicopters.
Sikorsky holds contracts worth $1.6 billion for the first 22 of a planned fleet of 113 HH-60Ws that will replace its aging and battle-worn HH-60G Pave Hawks.
The new helicopter was dubbed the Jolly Green II after the legendary HH-3E “Jolly Green Giant” combat search-and-rescue helicopter famous for plucking downed pilots from lush Vietnam War jungles.

IOC (Initial Operational Capability) per gli HH-60W Jolly Green II ...
Air Combat Command said its new HH-60W Jolly Green II has achieved initial operational capability, a key milestone for the new combat search and rescue helicopter.
Lockheed Martin, whose Sikorsky business unit makes the helicopter, and ACC each announced the achievement in separate press releases Oct. 12.
Achieving IOC means the Air Force now has the Airmen, equipment, and logistics in place to deploy a package of four HH-60Ws to any independent location for up to 30 days.
“It’s an exciting day for combat rescue as we bring a new platform and its upgraded capabilities into operation,” said Maj. Gen. David Lyons, director of operations at ACC, in the release.
“Current and future combat environments require us to maneuver further and faster than ever before, and the capabilities provided by the Jolly Green II supports the platform’s viability for our Air Force Personnel Recovery core function for as long as possible.”

L'USAF ha rivelato che i nuovi Jolly Green II hanno effettuato i primi salvataggi in combattimento ... con un'operazione sulla quale era stato mantenuto sino ad ora il massimo segreto ...
An HH-60W Jolly Green II - the Air Force’s new combat rescue helicopter - and its crew has been credited with the type’s first “saves” in hostile conditions overseas and on its first operational deployment, the service said, but details of the rescues are being withheld because of operational sensitivity.
Guardian Angels of the 347th Rescue Group, operating with HH-60Ws and HC-130Js, rescued two U.S. service members from a “battlefield” in the Horn of Africa in late December, the Air Force said in a release.
The aircraft made its first overseas deployment to the Horn of Africa region in mid-September 2022, shortly after declaring initial operational capability, but the Air Force has declined to say where they went or where specifically they were operating at the time of the saves, other than East Africa.

L'USAF esaminerà il CV-22, il nuovo elicottero dell'esercito per la ricerca e il salvataggio in combattimento a lungo raggio ...
The Air Force will consider the Army’s recently-selected Bell V-280 Valor tiltrotor aircraft as a possible solution to its long-range combat rescue helicopter needs - but the service will also look into using CV-22s and other new aircraft, Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. told the House Armed Services Committee on April 27.
Brown, testifying on the fiscal 2024 budget request, was asked if the Air Force, which has purchased all the CV-22 Ospreys it plans to buy, would consider buying more to use for combat rescue in the Indo-Pacific, where long ranges challenge the new HH-60W Jolly Green IIs.
The Air Force has cut its planned buy of HH-60Ws from 108 to 85 because they can only meet requirements in the European and Middle East theaters, USAF officials have said.
“I don’t see us actually going to additional CV-22s or opening back [up]” production, Brown said.
“Once you shut down the production line, it’s very expensive to start back up. And oh, by the way, it’s technology that’s somewhat dated.”
