NH90 'Sea Lion' ..... il programma navale tedesco procede .....
NH Industries (NHI) is gearing up to begin qualification activities later this year for the naval-variant NH90 helicopters being procured by Germany under its Sea Lion programme.
Berlin is to acquire 18 NFH rotorcraft as replacements for its navy's 21-strong fleet of elderly Westland Sea Kings, used for search and rescue and transport missions, with deliveries of the first three examples to take place in late 2019.
Military certification trials will take place with the second flight-test aircraft, which performed its maiden sortie in November 2017.

Il relativo contratto è stato appena firmato .....
Spain has signed a contract worth up to €1.38 billion ($1.57 billion) with Airbus Helicopters España - part of the NHIndustries consortium - to supply additional NH90 helicopters to the Ministry of Defense, doubling the number of the type that will be operated by the country’s armed forces.
The contract, awarded by the MoD’s Directorate General of Armaments and Material (DGAM), was announced on January 2 and follows the Spanish Council of Ministers’ decision to approve the purchase in November 2018.
“The object of the authorized contract is the acquisition of 23 NH90 GSPA/MSPT helicopters destined for the helicopter fleet of the Ministry of Defense, which will be operated by the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy,” a statement from the Council of Ministers said.

Per sostituire i vecchi Westland Sea Lynx 88A ... la Germania sceglie una versione dello NH90 prossima a quella francese "Caiman" ...
Germany has selected the NH Industries NH90 as the replacement for its navy's 21-strong fleet of Westland Sea Lynx 88A anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters.
Due to be delivered from 2025, Berlin will take a version of the NFH model, which is closest to the "Caiman" ASW variant operated by France, the country's defence ministry says.
Vanificate, quindi, le aspettative di Leonardo ...
Although Leonardo will receive some revenue from the latest acquisition, Berlin's decision is a blow for the manufacturer's Yeovil, UK site that builds the AW159 Wildcat, which was seen by the company as a natural successor to the Sea Lynx.
The airframer has no current orders for the type.

NH-90 NFH ... la Norvegia si affida a Nova Systems ...
Norway is making progress with the introduction of the NH Industries NH90 NFH maritime helicopter for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions, having taken delivery of the first aircraft in August last year.
Although the Royal Norwegian Air Force previously operated the Westland Lynx from its navy’s frigate fleet, these were not deployed in an ASW capacity.
Lacking experience in such operations, especially use of a dipping sonar, the air force has had to turn to Australia-headquartered Nova Systems (*) to help it deliver the new capability, including the development of tactics, training and processes, says Simon Sparkes, chief operating officer of the company’s Norwegian arm.
Nova began working on the €15 million ($16.6 million) contract last month and is providing a team of operators, engineers and software specialists; Sparkes himself is a former UK Royal Navy pilot with 30 years of experience on the Leonardo Helicopters AW101 Merlin and Westland Sea King.

NH-90 FS ... nuova versione per le Forze Speciali francesi ...
NH Industries has received a development and production order from the NATO Helicopter Mangement Agency (NAHEMA) for the conversion of NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters (TTHs) into the NH90 FS (Forces Spéciales) version for the French army.
The contract, signed on September 29, is an amendment to an existing production contract and covers the conversion of the final 10 aircraft of France’s 74 TTH order to the new variant, which is also known as the TFRA Standard 2.
France’s Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre (ALAT, light army aviation) first revealed plans for a special forces NH90 in 2015, and over the past 18 months the country’s Direction Générale de l‘Armements (DGA) procurement agency has been working closely with NAHEMA, as well as involvement with Australia and Belgium, to finalize the requirement.

MRH90 ... l'Australia ne ha abbastanza ...
The sorry saga of the NHIndustries MRH90 battlefield utility helicopter in Australian military service is seemingly coming to an abrupt end.
The helicopter, known to the Australian Army as the Taipan, after a deadly venomous snake, has proven to be impossible to operate effectively and the government has instead decided to look at replacing it with the UH-60M Black Hawk.
Ironically, it was older Black Hawks, among other types, that the MRH90 had originally been intended to supersede, but the program has never been far from trouble since service entry in 2007.

In line with the contractual schedule and Customer expectations, on August 26th NHIndustries completed the final delivery of an NH90 MITT (Maritime – Italian Navy Tactical Transport) helicopter to the Italian Navy.
The aircraft is the last of ten MH-90s, which the Italian Navy will use for amphibious support and Special Forces’ operations.
The aircraft - designated ‘MH-90’ by its operator – is the result of strong cooperation between the customer and industry.
From Leonardo’s Venice-Tessera plant, the MH-90 was assembled, flight tested, and delivered on schedule to the Italian Navy’s Main Operating Base in Luni.

Il punto di vista di NH Industries ... secondo un noto ex-settimanale britannico ...
NH Industries sees route back for MRH90 helicopter in Australia despite ministerial pronouncements ...
By Dominic Perry - 23 December 2021

NH Industries (NHI) insists it has not abandoned hope that Australia will reverse an apparent decision to push its fleet of NH90 helicopters into early retirement in favour of new Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawks for its army.
But that would require a seismic shift in Canberra’s position; announcing the preference for Black Hawks on 10 December, defence minister Peter Dutton branded problems with the NH90 as “unresolvable” and slammed the platform for its poor levels of availability and cost.
Nonetheless, NHI maintains that Australian officials have presented it with a different message: that the country is merely evaluating options and that no final decision will be taken before the end of 2022.
“We had several calls with Australian representatives and the message that we got was very clear that the decision was not taken yet,” says Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, head of NH90 program at Airbus Helicopters and president of NH Industries.
“At this time we are not taking for granted that Australia is going to withdraw from the NH90.”
Tarnaud Laude says the more nuanced position, which contradicts Dutton’s public pronouncements, was directly conveyed both to herself and Bruno Even, chief executive of Airbus Helicopters – a partner in the NHI consortium alongside Leonardo Helicopters and Fokker.
But in order to ensure the fleet of 47 MRH90 Taipans – Australia’s designation for the 11t-class helicopter – continues in service, NHI must convince its customer that the programme is making progress.
Tarnaud Laude says the company has been “doing a lot to support” Australia over the last two years and that “we have made quite significant steps in improving the performance and availability of the Australian aircraft”.
She acknowledges that the 39% availability rate recorded in 2020, up from 37% the previous year, “was not the right level of performance” but believes the programme is now on the right track.
Australia has set NHI a target to have 38 Taipans in service by mid-2022, demonstrating a 65% availability rate; those figures are presently 36 aircraft with 54% availability.
“We feel there have been some steps taken in 2021 and we want to continue to support the Australian forces to try to restore confidence [in the NH90] and hope that by the end of the year a decision might go in a different direction.
“This is the only target we should have for 2022 – to bring forward what we initiated in 2021 and which has shown very good results.”
But pressed on the apparent finality of Dutton’s comments, she adds: “All I can say is that the quote in the press is different to the message we got as industry.”

NH-90 ... situazione e prospettive ... ... secondo un noto ex-settimanale britannico ...
NH90 operators will see availability boost by end-2022: NHI president ...
By Dominic Perry - 23 December 2021

NH Industries (NHI) believes operators of the NH90 helicopter will see a significant improvement in aircraft availability over the next 12 months as concerted efforts by the airframer and its partners begin to pay dividends.
Recent headlines have been dominated by bad news for the NH90, with customers Australia and Norway both highlighting issues with the 11t-class helicopter.
However, they are not the only customers to have complained about the rotorcraft’s performance, a fact acknowledged by Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, head of the NH90 programme at Airbus Helicopters and president of NHI, which is a joint venture also involving Leonardo Helicopters and Fokker.
To address this, NHI launched in 2020 a “very ambitious transformation plan”, which aims to “tackle some of the issues that we have experienced”, she says.
This includes cutting the maintenance burden and reducing repair times, plus increasing the availability of spare parts.
By the end of 2022, NHI aims for the availability across the global fleet to have increased by 10-20 percentage points from the end-2020 baseline, to around 50-60%.
Tarnaud Laude says there has been progress over the last 12 months, but stresses a larger impact will only be visible by the end of 2022.
“At the moment we are just a bit improved from 2020 on average but the significant improvement we are looking to is for 2022.”
Localisation of maintenance activities also promises to bring improvements, she says, pointing to Norway where NHI is discussing with Kongsberg the potential to add “future MRO capability” on top of its existing main gearbox overhaul facility.
NHI is also aiming to substantially reduce the time it takes to retrofit aircraft to bring them to the full operatiional capability standard.
That process currently takes up to 24 months on average.
“This is an area where we need to make progress. We have helicopters sitting in our premises for too long,” she says.
Initial improvements to the current process should reduce the duration by six months, but NHI has launched a study which aims to entirely rethink how the retrofit is performed.
This should enable lead time to be cut to around 12 months, she says.
A total of 112 NH90s still need to be retrofitted, from a 179-strong pool.
In all, 13 retrofits will be delivered this year, an improvement on the five handed over in 2020, “and next year our ambition is to deliver a lot more helicopters”.
Shipments of new-build helicopters will be flat in 2021: NHI expects to deliver “a minimum” of 27 NH90s against 28 last year.
However, early December saw two milestone deliveries – the French navy taking its final anti-submarine warfare NFH variant and Qatar receiving its first TTH troop transport.
Backlog for the programme stands at 130 units, from a total order book of 597, and Tarnaud Laude thinks “a reasonable target” would be the sale of “at least” 100 more helicopters in the coming years.
While that total includes top-up orders from current operators, NHI has also tabled offers to a “couple of interested parties” who would be new to the programme.
Meanwhile, development work continues on the Standard 2 upgrade for the French army.
Designed for special forces missions, initial modifications include the addition of the Safran EuroFLIR 410 electro-optronic system, with displays and controls available for all on board, a new generation digital map generator, plus the introduction of a fast roping and rappelling capacity through the doors, an enlarged rear sliding window allowing the use of a machine gun.
A second step, which is still to be contracted, will gain a new distributed aperture system (DAS) – six infrared cameras arrayed around the nose – with the 3D image generated then presented on the digital screen of a next-generation Thales TopOwl helmet, aiding operations in degraded visual environments, such as brown- or white-out conditions.
To be applied to France’s last 10 examples of the TTH variant, deliveries of Standard 2 helicopters are on-track to begin in 2025, she says.
Additional customers for the upgrade may also emerge, with talks ongoing between Paris and prospective buyers.
In addition, a separate major system upgrade called SWR3 – currently being discussed with the NATO NAHEMA agency and NH90 operators – may include a new datalink to the Link 22 standard.
Meanwhile early discussions have started among the operator base around the potential for a mid-life upgrade (MLU) for the NH90 in order to define “the capabilities [required] for a horizon of 2030,” says Tarnaud Laude.
France is leading the effort to keep the NH90 relevant into the 2040s and beyond and in July 2021 organised a meeting of operator nations at Istres air base to begin that process
However, Tarnaud Laude declines to speculate on what elements could be considered for any prospective MLU.
Although the upgrade could progress without all the operators signing up, she says it is “our objective to convince as many nations as possible to join the MLU”.

NH-90 ... insoddisfazione nordica :angryfire: ...
... secondo un noto ex-settimanale britannico ...
Norway threatens cancellation of NH90 helicopter contract over upgrade delays ...
By Dominic Perry - 9 February 2022

Norway is again threatening to cancel its contract with NH Industries (NHI) after further delays to deliveries of NH90 maritime helicopters.
Addressing the country’s parliament on 9 February, Norwegian defence minister Odd Roger Enoksen expressed his dissatisfaction with the manufacturer.
“We do not yet have the maritime helicopter capacity we need, and I am not happy with this,” he says.
Deliveries of new-build helicopters to Norway have consistently run behind schedule since Oslo signed for 14 NFH-variant NH90s in 2001; the full complement of helicopters was due to have arrived by 2008, but shipments did not begin until 2011.
Back in 2012, then deputy defence minister Roger Ingebrigtsen said Norway was prepared to walk away from the contract if NHI’s performance did not improve, with the Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk reportedly under consideration as an alternative.
But the latest outbreak of hostilities is caused by the length of time taken to upgrade already delivered examples.
Of the 13 NH90s received by Norway, six are in an initial operating configuration and were due to be raised to the full operating standard by the end of 2023.
However, Enoksen says the latest forecasts from NHI indicate that the upgrade has been postponed to 2024.
“The supplier has not given us reason to have confidence in these plans,” he says.
As such, the defence ministry will now consider its options, which include the potential termination of the contract.
“I know that there is no quick and easy solution to this problem, but the goal is to get a justifiable solution for the future,” says Enoksen.
While commending the efforts of the armed forces and Norway’s defence materiel agency related to bringing the NH90s into service, he adds: “But they are working uphill with deliveries that are constantly delayed and a supplier that is unable to deliver in accordance with the agreements that have been entered into.”
Oslo was already considering the possibility of leasing in commercial helicopters to backfill for the NH90 in support of coastguard operations.
That process is still proceeding and a report from the defence materiel agency on the feasibility of such an arrangement was due to be submitted to the defence ministry earlier this week.
Norway’s initial plans called for eight helicopters to be employed on coastguard missions, with the remainder operated in an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and naval support role.
However, poor availability rates forced a rethink, with the NH90s instead dedicated to the ASW mission.
NHI is a three-way consortium comprising Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo Helicopters and Fokker.
Late last year NHI president Nathalie Tarnaud Laude promised the manufacturer was taking action on the slow pace of NH90 upgrades.

Low NH90 availability pinned on contract failings, but programme chief sees causes for optimism ...
By Dominic Perry - 23 May 2022

Availability rates as low as 25% on the NH Industries (NHI) NH90 were the result of too much focus on managing the acquisition and introduction of the helicopters and not enough on how to keep them flying, according to a senior Airbus Helicopters executive.
The 11t rotorcraft has come in for regular criticism from several customers due to inoperable aircraft, long wait times for spare parts or maintenance, and lengthy retrofit periods; Australia in particular has become so frustrated with the NH90’s problems that it seems almost certain to ditch its fleet in favour of the Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk.
“In the past the focus was on contract management,” says Christoph Zammert, executive vice-president of customer support and services at the airframer, which is a partner in NHI alongside Leonardo Helicopters and Fokker.
“The contractual set ups were not always putting enough focus and priority on flight availability. We have now realised this and we are moving towards a more collaborative approach [with customers].”
In part, that is due to the maturity of the programme, enabling a move to the “sustainment phase”, whereas previously “it was very much focused on managing the acquisition and industrial delivery of the fleet to the customers”.
However, that shift in mindset at the industrial and customer level “could have been done earlier”, admits Zammert.
Across the whole fleet – which encompasses 14 operators flying a mix of the naval NFH and TTH troop transport variants – availability rates average 40%, he says, with the manufacturer aiming to reach at least 50% by 2023, a level that “should be possible”, he says.
Zammert reveals that the lowest recorded availability rate was 25%; this was at a customer two or three years ago and was “mainly driven by the introduction of a new type in a support environment that was used to other OEMs’ models and needed to manage the transition to the NH90 generation”.
Although the NH90’s availability is frequently compared with that of the stock Black Hawk, Zammert argues that its performance is better benchmarked against helicopters where extensive mission equipment “adds complexity and generates additional maintenance workload”.
“You would see similar availability figures comparing the NFH to the Romeo or the TTH to the M-model Black Hawk,” he asserts.
Airbus Helicopters has also invested in centrally held spare parts “rather than wait for the customer to do so”, which “past experience shows is not the best way of doing things”.
In addition, NHI and its partner companies have been working more closely with individual customers to tackle specific issues, and to share best practice across the operator community, says Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, senior vice-president and head of the NH90 programme at Airbus Helicopters and president of NHI.
She argues that a “transformation plan” launched last year and featuring 22 separate initiatives, is having a tangible impact on fleet availability.
That has included the extension of maintenance intervals for certain tasks, plus the establishment of local partnerships for repair and overhaul work, such as with Kongsberg in Norway.
That deal appears crucial to NHI’s overall recovery plan in the Nordic country: frustrated with the slow pace of deliveries and low aircraft availability, Oslo in February again threatened to walk away from the programme if there was no improvement.
“We consider that developing a relationship with partners in Norway is very important. Considering the situation with Norway at the moment, where aircraft are not flying enough, we believe such partnerships can really make a big step-change,” she says.
Oslo laid out its concerns in a letter to NHI and Tarnaud Laude says the issues raised have been answered “with very clear solutions – we now believe we have a plan to improve the situation for them”.
Availability issues should ease further as the fleet grows: Norway’s final serial NH90 is due to be delivered shortly, followed by its final retrofitted helicopter by the end of 2023, she says.
The time taken to perform retrofits – a requirement due to early aircraft being delivered in an initial operating capability standard – has been another bone of contention with operators.
That process is being accelerated, she says: there are 107 NH90s still awaiting retrofit and NHI has so far this year delivered five of the 20 upgraded units scheduled.
That compares with 13 in 2021 and five in 2020, and illustrates “quite significant levels of ramp-up”, she says.
While mission systems are still awaited for “a couple” of helicopters awaiting retrofit, overall “we feel confident we can accelerate retrofit deliveries in 2022 as scheduled”, says Tarnaud Laude.
But even with the improvements being made they seem unlikely to be enough to rescue the situation in Australia, which in late 2021 said it would retire its MRH90s – the local designation for the NH90 – to be replaced by UH-60Ms.
Although no final decision will be made until the end of the year – and a change of government may alter the picture – Canberra seems set on divesting the NH90; indeed, it has already phased out five examples used by the Royal Australian Navy in favour of additional MH-60Rs.
Tarnaud Laude still holds out some hope that the NH90 can find a way back, but counsels that “we should not be naive” about its prospects.
However, with the remaining 42 helicopters likely to continue in operation until 2026 or 2027, future support will remain necessary; both sides are discussing an extension to the current contract, she says.
“It is very important for us that no matter what the decision is that we deliver on our commitments [so] that the customer can fly when they want.” NHI is has promised that 38 units will be available by mid-2022.
Meanwhile, development of the new Standard 2 configuration for the French special forces continues, with the critical design review milestone imminent: “Here we are on a very good track,” says Tarnaud Laude.
Deliveries are due to begin in 2025.
In addition, a separate major system upgrade called SWR3 is currently being discussed with the NATO NAHEMA helicopter management agency and NH90 operators.
This could require considerable downtime to perform the upgrade on each helicopter, Tarnaud Laude admits.
She remains hopeful this can be reduced to 12 months, “but we are not there yet”.
Meanwhile, NHI is hopeful that it will receive a contract from NAHEMA in the coming weeks to conduct an analysis that will allow the lifetime of the NH90 to be extended to 50 years.
“This is something that was positively appreciated by the customers who want to continue to operate the aircraft of course beyond 2030 and until at least 2050,” she says.
But with the backlog dwindling, production is currently set to run out in about 2026.
However, Tarnaud Laude thinks more NH90s can be sold.
“To be honest with you we totally believe we can accept other customers,” she says.
“We have a good machine – we are convinced that it is one of the best machines in the category – we just need to convince them it can be operated with better availability.”

La Norvegia, ormai stanca della scarsa disponibilità dei suoi NH90 navali, ha deciso di disfarsene ...
Frustrated with the poor availability of its NH90 naval helicopter fleet, Norway has decided to call it a day with the European rotorcraft.
Oslo has halted operations of the platform permanently as of June 10 and sent manufacturer NHIndustries - a joint venture of Airbus, Leonardo and Fokker - a program termination notice.
The Norwegian Defense Ministry will return the aircraft to the manufacturer and says it expects a refund of NKR5 billion ($522 million) - equivalent to how much it has paid out, plus interest and other expenses.
“No matter how many hours the personnel work, and no matter how many parts we order, NH90 will not be able to meet the needs of the Armed Forces,” Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram told a press conference June 10.

Anche la Svezia, dopo la Norvegia, ha deciso di annullare l'accordo relativo all'acquisto degli NH90 :signbye: ...
Sweden’s top military officer announced Nov. 1 that the country was cancelling its agreement to purchase NH90 maritime helicopters, following problems with availability of the NHIndustries-produced rotorcraft.
The decision, taken by Gen. Micael Byden, Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, was announced as part of newly issued defense modernization and procurement guidance.
But it did not come out of nowhere - senior Swedish Air Force figures, citing poor availability rates, have been openly floating the idea of cancelling the agreement for the NH90s for several months.
Byden’s plan, subject to government approval, puts the country in line with its future-NATO ally Norway, which similarly ended its contract with the manufacturer - a collaboration between Airbus, Leonardo and GKN Aerospace/Fokker Technologies - for 14 NH90 aircraft on June 10.
Norway said at the time that it would return aircraft already delivered and seek compensation to the value of almost 5 billion kroner ($525 million).
