Nancy Pelosi è atterrata a Taiwan

https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/spar ... -all-time/

Minutes before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's historic arrival in Taiwan, Chinese state-run media claimed Su-35 fighter jets were crossing the Taiwan Strait, but Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) quickly labeled this report as false.
At 10:26 p.m. on Wednesday evening, less than 20 minutes before Pelosi's arrival in Taipei, China's CGTN reported that China-operated Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets were crossing the Taiwan Strait, without providing additional information.

Un progetto ... indietro con i tempi  ...
Sierra Nevada Corp., the world’s 54th largest defense contractor in the Defense News annual ranking, will provide the U.K. with high-altitude uncrewed balloons to be used for surveillance and reconnaissance.
The U.S. aerospace company headquartered in Sparks, Nevada, will demonstrate the balloons’ capabilities as part of a U.K. Ministry of Defence’s Project Aether assessment phase contract, according to an Aug. 10 press release from the company (*).
The contract is valued at as much as £100 million (U.S. $121 million) and comes amid similar investments in the technology from U.S. lawmakers.
The U.K. project looks to address the country’s need for communication systems that are rapidly maneuverable for long-duration missions that require minimal resupply or maintenance.
Ayse Caglar, a spokesperson for Sierra Nevada did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

The German Air Force has sent a fleet of aircraft around the world for its first-ever deployment to the Indo-Pacific region, a move meant to demonstrate its operational capability during two regional exercises and to show solidarity with its allies there.
Six Eurofighter jets - painted with the flags of Germany, Singapore, Australia, South Korea, and Japan - left Neuburg Air Base Monday afternoon followed by four A400M multirole aircraft, and three A330 multirole tanker transport aircraft.
The goal is to reach Singapore within 24 hours, with a pilot change taking place in Abu Dhabi.
Upon arrival in Singapore, the aircraft will be transferred to Darwin, Australia, ahead of the biennial Pitch Black exercise taking place Aug. 19 to Sept. 9.
“We want to demonstrate that we can be in Asia within a day,” said Lt. Gen. Ingo Gerhartz, the air service’s chief of staff.

Contraddizioni turche ...
Russia said on Tuesday it signed a contract to supply Turkey with additional air-defense missiles, but Ankara quickly rejected the claims that a new purchase agreement was inked.
The contract includes local production in Turkey of components of the Russian S-400 missile-defense system, according to Dmitry Shugaev, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation.
Turkey’s defense procurement agency SSB denied that a second purchase agreement had been signed, saying there had been no change in the terms since an initial deal was inked in 2017.
Ankara’s swift denial highlights the evolving nature of its balancing act since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
The Turkish government arms Kyiv with deadly drones to help it defend itself against Moscow, but also refrains from joining Western sanctions targeting individuals and state companies in Russia, the single largest source of gas and crude oil for Turkey’s $800 billion economy.

Zaporizhzhia ... la Russia ha detto "Nyet" ...
Russia has rejected calls from the United Nations for a demilitarized zone around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which has been occupied by Moscow’s forces since early March and lies in a region of Ukraine that is set to become a new frontline of the war.
Russia’s permanent representative to the body, Vasily Nebenzya, told Interfax on Friday that Moscow must “protect” the Zaporizhzhia plant.
A withdrawal of its troops would make the facility “vulnerable … to provocations and terrorist attacks,” he said.
The UN secretary general, António Guterres, had earlier called for all military personnel and equipment to be pulled out, saying the plant “should not be used as part of any military operations” and a demilitarized zone needed to be agreed to.
Both the United States and France backed Guterres’ appeal.
Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said that officials must visit the plant as soon as possible.
“This is a serious hour, a grave hour,” Grossi told the UN security council.

Air Force Global Strike Command test-launched an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile Aug. 16, several days after delaying the test to avoid stoking tensions with China.
The launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., took place at 12:49 a.m. Pacific time.
The ICBM reentry vehicle traveled approximately 4,200 miles to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, AFGSC announced in a press release (*).
Airmen from the 625th Strategic Operations Squadron at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., and Sailors from the Navy’s Strategic Communications Wing executed the launch on board a Navy E-6B Mercury aircraft using the Airborne Launch Control System.
Airmen from the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., and 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., helped support the test launch, while the Space Force’s Col. Bryan Titus, vice commander of Space Launch Delta 30, was the launch decision authority.

A B-2 bomber successfully released a long-range cruise missile during a weapons test in December 2021, contractor Northrop Grumman revealed Aug. 25, potentially giving the stealth bomber the ability to strike even deeper into contested areas.
The Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range, or JASSM-ER, has a range of more than 500 miles and has been integrated onto the B-1B and B-52 bombers and F-15E and F-16 fighters, according to Pentagon budget documents.
The December test on the B-2, however, marks the first publicly known instance of the Air Force testing the JASSM-ER on a stealth aircraft - there are plans to integrate the missile onto the F-35A as well.
The B-2 has already completed testing with the missile’s shorter-range variant, the JASSM.

The sister ship of the Russian guided-missile cruiser sunk by the Ukrainian Navy has left its position in the Mediterranean Sea after six months, USNI News has learned.
RTS Marshal Ustinov (055), sister ship to the former RTS Moskva (121), passed through the Strait of Gibraltar on Thursday after operating in the Mediterranean Sea since early February, according to ship spotters.
Shortly after it passed into the Atlantic two U.S. guided-missile destroyers assigned to the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, USS Cole (DDG-67) and USS Bainbridge (DDG-96), followed the Russian cruiser two hours after it passed the Rock of Gibraltar, according to photos published by ship spotters.
The cruiser was one of Russia’s primary naval assets in the region and reduces Moscow’s presence closer to Ukraine.
Ustinov, along with the Russian Navy’s two other Slava-class cruisers – the sunken Moskva and RTS Varyag (011) – were sortied from their homeports earlier this year in conjunction with the Russian ground invasion of Ukraine.

After two decades of this kind of training, the students from former Warsaw Pact countries such as Poland and Romania have changed.
“These young guys … haven’t flown any Russian airplanes,” said Putnam.
“Typically, their English is better, and we run them through to the basic course, and they are, for all intents and purposes, just like the U.S. guys who train alongside them.”
Making the transition from Russian to Western aircraft, however, requires a mind shift.
“It’s not easy,” he said.
“It depends a lot on how long they’ve been trained in the MiGs, because a lot of what comes along with their training is their mindset,” he said.
“They’re into the Soviet system that goes along with those aircraft, which is typically a lot of close control. They don’t make a lot of decisions. They’re not used to being super flexible.”
But in the U.S. Air Force program, pilots must learn to be decision makers.
“They can’t sit up in the airplane and just drive and wait to be told what to do,” Putnam said.
“They have to actively direct their aircraft and think about what it is they’re trying to accomplish.”

Japan’s Ministry of Defence is proposing to build a pair of ballistic missile defense ships – the among largest warships in the Japanese inventory since World War II – government officials said last week.
The Ministry of Defense listed design expenses and engines for the two Aegis BMD ships among 100 items requested that did not have a specific cost at the time of the budget rollout as part of its FY23 budget request.
The Ministry of Defense requested $39.7 billion in spending for the next fiscal year, which exceeds the FY 2022 budget of $38.4 billion.
The two ships would be built instead of the land-based Aegis Ashore installations that the Japanese Self-Defence Force backed away from in 2020 based on risks of missile debris falling to the ground, USNI News reported at the time.

An Australian member of parliament wants to speed up the delivery of nuclear-powered submarines to Canberra to send a clear message to China and Russia that Australia will defend its sovereignty against their aggressive ambitions.
Andrew Hastie, speaking at a Hudson Institute event on the anniversary of the historic agreement to build a nuclear-submarine force in Australia and share advanced technology between Canberra, London and Washington, said Australia wants the submarine capability in
“the next decade if not sooner.”
He added that this insistence on building up sovereign defense is a lesson Australia learned from Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion this year and China’s aggressive moves against Taiwan.
Australia will decide which model of submarine design it will follow – the United States’ Virginia-class attack boats or the United Kingdom’s Astute-class – in the first quarter of 2023.
But that is only one step in the larger agreement, he said.

Russia has “almost certainly” moved its Black Sea Fleet Kilo-class submarines from Sevastopol, Crimea, to the Novorossiysk port in Krasnodar Krai, the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense announced in a Tuesday intelligence report.
Russia could have up to four of the diesel-electric attack boats in the Black Sea.
All of the Kilo-class are capable of launching Kalibr NK cruise missiles.
Sea-launched Kalibirs have been used in attacks on Ukraine, a senior military official said during a Monday briefing.
While the United States has seen reports, Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder during his Tuesday press briefing was not able to confirm that Russia is moving their submarines.

The U.S. Navy has revealed that it recently demonstrated a road-mobile ground-based launching system for multi-purpose SM-6 missiles at an as-yet undisclosed location in Europe.
The containerized launcher module, in this case loaded onto a tractor-trailer, is all but certainly the same type, or a variant thereof, as the one that was installed on the unmanned test ship Ranger for a live-fire test last year.
This launcher system is also set to be a component of the U.S. Army's future Typhon system, which is expected to be able to fire SM-6s, as well as Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles.
Photographs of what the Navy described as a "modular SM-6 launcher system" appeared on official social media accounts belonging to the service's Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet (NAVFOREUR-AF/Sixth Fleet) earlier today.
"U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet personnel conducted convoy protection rehearsals with a U.S. Navy modular SM-6 launcher system within the U.S. European Command (EUCOM) area of responsibility on Sunday," according to the post on NAVFOREUR-AF/Sixth Fleet's Facebook page.
"This U.S. Navy capability enables rapid defense of the maritime domain."

Ucraina ... i Russi sarebbero sulla difensiva ...
The Pentagon’s international affairs chief said Monday that Russia’s new losses in the strategic southern Kherson region are about to spiral into a “major defeat” that would give Ukraine a defensive position amid “hot fighting” expected this winter.
After news that Ukrainian forces broke through Moscow’s defenses in Kherson, which Moscow saw as the gateway to Odessa, Assistant Defense Secretary for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander said the Ukrainians were on the verge of pushing back the main Russian bridgehead across the Dnipro River.
“That would be a major defeat for Russia because it pushes back even more Russia’s ambition to take Odessa, which was one of the stated objectives earlier this year,” Wallander said at a Center for Strategic and International Studies event.

The U.S. assesses that Ukraine’s battlefield gains on the eastern and southern fronts over the past three days are strategically important, but Kyiv is still far from a decisive victory, according to U.S. officials.
In the east, Kyiv’s forces over the weekend captured the city of Lyman, a strategic railway hub, and continued to push east into the Donetsk region.
In the south, Ukrainian soldiers broke through Moscow’s defensive lines in the Kherson region, gateway to the port city of Odesa.

Belgorod !!!
A Russian Navy submarine that carries bus-sized nuclear torpedoes was spotted in the Arctic after sparking headlines earlier this week over fears of a nuclear weapons test, according to new photos published on Wednesday.
Project 09852 Belgorod was spotted on the surface operating in the Barents Sea, on Sept. 22 and Sept. 27, near the Kola Peninsula ...
On Monday, Italian newspaper La Repub(b)lica reported that military officials in Europe had warned that the submarine had traveled to the Kara Sea to test its Poseidon torpedoes.
Pentagon officials did not provide any specific information on Belgorod’s movement when contacted by USNI News earlier this week.
However, a defense official played down the submarine’s recent operations in general.

The Tu-95 Bear-H bombers were tracked entering the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone or ADIZ.
An ADIZ can include international airspace to help identify approaching aircraft early.
The Alaskan ADIZ covers a large area over the Pacific.
The Alaskan NORAD Region detected, tracked, and positively identified the bombers entering and operating in the ADIZ before dispatching two F-16s to intercept them.
NORAD’s press release (*) did not specify which units the F-16s belonged to.

A Russian military jet has crashed into a residential building in the city of Yeysk, and the Russian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that the aircraft involved is a Sukhoi Su-34 Fullback.
In videos and images of the incident that have so far surfaced online, large black plumes of smoke can be seen emanating from the scene where the Russian jet went down, proceeded by a huge fireball.
In one specific photo, what appears to be a member of the jet’s crew can be seen parachuting down next to the flames presumably after ejecting from the aircraft just an instant before the crash.

Japan is set to be the first country after the United States to field the Standard Missile 6 as part of a proposed $450 million arms package, according to a State Department notification to Congress.
According to the Thursday notification (*), Japan was conditionally approved to buy up to 32 of the Raytheon-built SM-6 Block Is, pending congressional approval.
“The proposed sale will improve Japan’s Air Defense and Ballistic Missile Defense capabilities against potential adversaries in the region. It will also provide the U.S.-Japan Security Alliance with the latest and most advanced capabilities, reducing Japan’s reliance on U.S. Forces for the defense of Japan and further improving U.S.-Japan military interoperability. Japan will have no difficulty absorbing these missiles into its armed forces,” reads the notification.

He may have hung up his lightsaber as Luke Skywalker in 2019, but “Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill is still fighting.
This time, it’s for Ukraine.
During an interview with Bloomberg Radio’s Sound On program (*), the actor revealed he helped send 500 drones to Ukraine.
“Very simply, Ukraine needs drones,” Hamill told Bloomberg.
“They define war outcomes, they protect their land, their people, they monitor the border, they’re eyes in the sky.”

Gli Stati Uniti stanno prendendo in considerazione la fornitura all'Ucraina di vecchi missili antiaerei HAWK ("Homing All the Way Killer") ...
The United States is considering sending older HAWK air defense equipment from storage to Ukraine to help it defend against Russian drone and cruise missile attacks, two U.S. officials told Reuters.
The HAWK interceptor missiles would be an upgrade to the Stinger missile systems - a smaller, shorter range air defense system - that the United States has already sent to blunt Russia's invasion.
The Biden administration would use the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) to transfer the HAWK equipment which is based on Vietnam-era technology, but has been upgraded several times.
The PDA allows the United States to transfer defense articles and services from stocks quickly without congressional approval in response to an emergency.

Armi statunitensi fornite all'Ucraina ... meglio tenerle d'occhio ...
The State Department announced a new plan Oct. 27 to track weapons the United States has provided to Ukraine.
The plan addresses concerns that the nearly $18 billion in military aid America has provided since Russia’s renewed invasion could fall into the wrong hands.
If Russia acquires American weapons, it could “develop countermeasures, propaganda, or … conduct false-flag operations,” according to the State Department.
The U.S. government has an existing process to track American weapons that are provided through security assistance or foreign military sales.
But the high-intensity war in Ukraine and the presence of U.S. aid required a more comprehensive and public approach, according to the State Department.
“This plan does not represent the start of an effort. We have taken concrete steps to address this issue since Russia’s renewed invasion of Ukraine began, and even before then,” a State Department spokesperson told Air & Space Forces Magazine on Oct. 28.
“The United States has long maintained a variety of tools to mitigate diversion risks of U.S.-origin defense equipment.”
According to the U.S., Ukraine has responsibly handled its donated equipment and the plan was not a result of any known cases of American weapons ending up in the wrong hands.

The United States is planning to deploy up to six nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to an air base in northern Australia, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday, amid heightened tensions with China.
Dedicated facilities for the bombers will be set up at the Royal Australian Air Force's remote Tindal base, about 300 km (190 miles) south of Darwin, the capital of Australia's Northern Territory, said the source, who declined to be identified because they are not authorised to speak publicly on the issue.

Si teme un attacco dell'Iran all'Arabia Saudita ...
Saudi Arabia recently warned the US of an imminent attack by Iran on targets in the kingdom and in Erbil, Iraq, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.
The US military and other militaries in the Middle East have raised their alert level in response to the warnings, according to the report.
The planned attacks are aimed at distracting from the protests that have swept Iran in recent weeks.
The White House National Security Council said it was concerned about the warnings and was ready to respond.

Amid strategic competition with China, the United States plans to augment its ability to operate submarines out of Guam, the commander of U.S. submarine forces in the Pacific said today.
After sending Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine USS Springfield (SSN-761) to Guam earlier this year, the Navy will spend the next five to 10 years building out both its maintenance capacity and training capabilities on the U.S. territory.
“Looking to the future, we are going to expand our submarine operating capability from Guam to optimize our presence and warfighting capacity in the Western Pacific,” Rear Adm. Jeffrey Jablon, the commander of Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, said Wednesday at the Naval Submarine League’s annual symposium.

Una visita alquanto insolita ...
The U.S. Navy's Ohio class ballistic missile submarine USS Rhode Island has made a very uncommon public port visit to the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar.
The public announcement about this stopover is also unusual and even more so coming nearly two weeks after the U.S. Central Command made the extremely curious decision to disclose that another one of these submarines, the USS West Virginia, was operating in the Arabian Sea.
As in that case, it's difficult not to view Rhode Island's ostensibly scheduled stop in Gibraltar as messaging aimed at potential adversaries, such as Russia, as well as allies and partners.
Ship spotters were quick to identify Rhode Island's arrival at the British naval base in Gibraltar earlier today, which the U.S. Navy subsequently confirmed (*).
The service also noted that this is the first time an Ohio ballistic missile submarine, or SSBN, has visited Gibraltar since the USS Alaska stopped there in June 2021.
Alaska's stopover was the first time in two decades one of these boats had visited the British territory.
Rhode Island also made a public visit to His Majesty's Naval Base Clyde in Scotland in July.

U.S. Air Force Secretary Concerned With Sentinel ICBM Timeline ...
Brian Everstine - November 03, 2022

U.S. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall says he is “concerned” about the schedule for the LGM-35A Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile system as there has been a schedule slip, though it remains within its overall baseline while there is not much more slack to give.
The Northrop Grumman Sentinel, previously known as the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent, will replace the Air Force’s Minuteman III ICBM system.
Kendall said Nov. 1 at Aviation Week’s A&D Programs event in Washington that the internal slip comes as “we don’t have a lot of margin right now on the schedule.”
The government, including under Kendall when he served as the Pentagon’s acquisition chief in the Obama administration, delayed nuclear modernization to the point where it is necessary now.
“I am concerned about the schedule, specifically for Sentinel,” Kendall said in a discussion on nuclear modernization.
The most recent selected acquisition report (SAR), released in September, says that Northrop Grumman has reported a “schedule variance to their baseline plan.”
The SAR estimates the system Critical Design Review for May 2024, a slip from the current baseline objective of July 2023 but before the threshold of July 2024.
The Milestone C decision is set for January 2026, ahead of the objective of May 2026, with Initial Operational Capability estimated for May 2029.
“As the year progressed, there has been significant progress made on linking the [Northrop Grumman] schedule to the Government Enterprise schedule and verifying several hundred giver/receiver linkages and Government Furnished Equipment delivery dates,” the SAR says.
The program faced a setback in test in July, when a Minotaur II+ rocket exploded shortly after launch at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California.
The rocket was the first launch test supporting the development of the Lockheed Martin Mk21A re-entry vehicle.
The SAR estimates the total budget cost in 2023 for the Sentinel program to be $95.8 billion, with a total end procurement quantity of 634.

Dopo Putin ... cosa? ...

Before February 24, 2022, many observers in Europe and North America considered Russian President Vladimir Putin a ruthless but pragmatic autocrat.
But after the murderous invasion of Ukraine, Putin comes across as an aggressive gambler, a believer in historical myths, and a Nietzschean power-grabber..
For many, especially in Eastern Europe, Putin came to be an embodiment of “eternal Russia”: the country that has always been bent on conquest and therefor is dangerous.
From Finland to the Baltic states, from Poland to Romania, many privately consider Putin’s Russia as a successor to the Soviet Union and the Russian empire.
The tsars and communist rulers were all the same: imperialists bent on colonizing and expanding.
And Russian people “always needed a strong leadership.”
This reductionist view, which equates Putin, Russia, and the Russian people, is in rapid ascendance inside Washington, D.C., too-from the so-called “national security state” to think tanks.
As US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed it: “We want to see Russia weakened to the degree that it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine”
