Forse, in taluni ambienti cinesi, non si sono ancora resi conto che, in casa, hanno altri grossi problemi ...
The United States and China are escalating their military duel near Taiwan by flying strategic bombers near the island state in recent days.
The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) sent several H-6 bombers near Taiwan on Feb. 10, including one that provocatively crossed the middle dividing line between the mainland and Taiwan, prompting Taipei’s military to scramble F-16 jets to intercept and shadow the bomber.
A day later, the U.S. Pacific Air Force flew two B-52 nuclear-capable bombers near Taiwan in an apparent response.

Un messaggio inequivocabile ... :argue:
The Air Force recently sent an unexpected aircraft over the village of Kismayo, a rural town on the Somali coast that has been a hotbed of extremist activity by groups such as al-Shabab.
A nuclear-capable B-52, forward deployed to U.S. Central Command, flew an unmistakable show of force over the region last month.
USAF leaders said the Feb. 15 flight was a direct message, not necessarily to the violent extremist groups armed with AK-47s and pickup trucks, but to global powers working to exert their influence on a continent that is becoming increasingly important to the global power structure.
“There’s a message opportunity here, not just to al-Shabab and [violent extremist organizations] on the ground, but more broadly to Russia and China that: ‘Hey, we’re competing with you down here, we’re engaged here, we have high situational awareness as to what’s going on, and we’re going to use this opportunity to demonstrate that to the collective world,’” US Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa boss Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian told Air Force Magazine.

Exercise Red Flag is underway with the U.S. and some of its tightest allies fighting a mock air war over the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) in southern Nevada.
Either in conjunction with the exercise or independent of it, there is a lot of testing currently going on over the same area.
Case in point, this test F-15E Strike Eagle assigned to Eglin Air Force Base carrying an inert version of America's newest variant of its long-running B61 series of nuclear bombs, the precision-guided B61-12

Ground Based Strategic Deterrent ... il contratto per la realizzazione del missile balistico intercontinentale di nuova generazione potrebbe essere assegnato a Northrop Grumman prima del previsto ...
An award for the U.S. Air Force’s Ground Based Strategic Deterrent program is slated to granted by the end of September, but it could happen earlier, the service’s acquisition executive said Thursday.
“I think early award is possible on GBSD,” Will Roper told reporters during a teleconference.
“I’m very hopeful, but because GBSD has a large component of classified work, that team is having to go in and maintain workforce in our [sensitive compartmented information facilities] and in our classified spaces. So we’re watching very carefully to make sure the installations are open to allow that work.”
As the sole bidder on the GBSD program, Northrop Grumman is anticipated to win an estimated $85 billion to design and build the Air Force’s next-generation intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Fine (temporanea?) di un' era ...
The Air Force announced April 16 it will no longer base strategic bombers outside of the continental United States, marking an end to the service’s 16-year continuous bomber presence at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.
But before the last bomber left the island, USAF reminded the world of its combat power with an impressive “elephant walk” that included five B-52 strategic bombers, six KC-135 tankers, an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, an RQ-4 Global Hawk, and a U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton (*).
“U.S. strategic bombers will continue to operate in the Indo-Pacific, to include Guam, at the timing and tempo of our choosing,” said Air Force Global Strike Command in a statement.
“We will maximize all opportunities to train alongside our allies and partners, to build interoperability, and bolster our collective ability to be operationally unpredictable.”

The Air Force is spearheading development of the Defense Department’s first hypersonic cruise missile, which would complement another weapon already underway.
The service on April 27 reached out to industry to seek input on a “solid rocket-boosted, air-breathing, hypersonic, conventional cruise missile” that can be launched from existing fighters and bombers.
Air Force acquisition boss Will Roper told reporters April 29 the program will leverage work already done by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Air Force Research Laboratory, and partner with industry to speed the design into production.

Ground Based Strategic Deterrent ... il successore del Minuteman III supera l'esame preliminare del progetto (PDR) ...
Northrop Grumman’s Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent system passed a two-day preliminary design review in late April, the Air Force said May 15.
The evaluation clears the way for a final review by Ellen Lord, undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment.
If she approves, the Air Force expects to award Northrop the GBSD development contract by the end of September.
The review showed that the GBSD - the replacement for the Minuteman III ICBM force - is “sufficiently mature and ready to proceed into detailed design with acceptable risk, and will meet performance requirements within budget and on schedule,” program manager Col. Jason Bartolomei said in a press release from the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (*).

Armi ipersoniche ... a quanto pare il plasma non costituisce più una preoccupazione ...
The US Department of Defense (DoD) is not concerned that its in-development hypersonic missiles could suffer from a communications blackout caused by a cocoon of plasma.
NASA spacecraft and intercontinental ballistic missiles have previously suffered from a communication interference caused by a layer of plasma forming around the vehicles when they re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere.
Plasma forms when atmospheric gases are ionized – electrons are separated from their atoms – by the heat and compression caused by an object moving through the air at many times the speed of sound. The plasma layer blocks radio transmissions.
Many researchers and observers have thought that hypersonic missiles would also form a plasma sheath while flying more than five times the speed of sound through the atmosphere.
That could make it difficult to communicate with the missiles.
Radioing the high-stakes weapons could be critical, for instance, to abort a mission.
However, despite popular perception, the possibility is not a major concern, says Mike White, assistant director of hypersonics with the Pentagon.

SM-3 Block IIA ... pronto per la produzione ...
The U.S. military considers the development of the Standard Missile 3 Block IIA ballistic missile interceptor to be complete and the weapon ready for production, even as co-developer Japan has changed its mind about using the interceptor as part of a shore-based ballistic missile defense site.
Japan had been set to build two Aegis Ashore BMD sites, one in the northern region of the country and one at the southern end.
Earlier this week, though, the Japanese government said it had changed its mind, citing concerns that the rocket booster on the SM-3 Block IIA interceptor wasn’t properly falling back to the ground in safe areas and could put civilian infrastructure or people at risk.

L' Australia punta al rafforzamento ...

Da FlightGlobal ...
The update stresses continued acquisition of the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF’s) planned 72 Lockheed Martin F-35As, adding that a replacement will be sought in the late 2030s.
A replacement for the Boeing EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft is also foreseen from the late 2020s.
An “Additional Air Combat Capability” with funding of A$4.5-6.7 billion is listed from the mid-to-late 2020s.
It is not clear precisely what this refers to, but local trade publication ADBR (*) suggests it could mean upgrading Royal Australian Air Force Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornets to a Block III configuration, acquiring additional F-35As, or adding unmanned combat air systems - or some combination of these options.

La Russia rafforza la presenza della sua flotta subacquea nel Mediterraneo ... violando in tal modo la Convenzione di Montreux ...
The Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet recently has been deploying its submarines to the Mediterranean, despite a decades-old international treaty which many thought would prevent those deployments.
The Montreux Convention, agreed to in 1936, prohibits submarines from passing through the Bosporus Strait, which connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.
There are exceptions in the treaty for special cases for Black Sea nations: delivery of new submarines to the Black Sea and transits for repairs.
Russia is now routinely using these clauses to reestablish a permanent submarine presence in the Mediterranean.
The deployment of these submarines to the Mediterranean is a serious concern for NATO leadership.

Gli Stati Uniti accusano la Cina di impiegare 'tattiche gangsteristiche' nel Mar Cinese Meridionale ...
The U.S. will no longer remain on the sidelines when China uses “gangster tactics” to get its way in territorial disputes in the South China Sea, a senior State Department official said on Tuesday.
Speaking at an online forum at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, David Stillwell, assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific, said if Beijing continues to block Philippine access to fishing waters in Scarborough Shoal or militarize outcroppings there, the United States would regard those as “a dangerous move.”
Four years ago, an international arbitration panel ruled against China and said Scarborough Shoals belonged to the Philippines.
Beijing ignored the ruling, calling it “a piece of paper,” Stillwell said.
