La notte scorsa c'è stato un bombardamento di artiglieria russo sulla centrale nucleare ucraina di Zaporizhzhia ...

Un aggiornamento da parte della IAEA ...

Ukraine informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today that Russian forces had taken control of the site of the country’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), but that the nuclear power plant continued to be operated by its regular staff and there had been no release of radioactive material, Director General Rafael Mario Grossi said.
Ukrainian counterparts informed the IAEA that a projectile overnight had hit a training building in the vicinity of one of the plant’s reactor units, causing a localized fire that was later extinguished.
The safety systems of the plant’s six reactors had not been affected and there has been no release of radioactive material.
Radiation monitoring systems at the site are fully functional.
However, the operator has reported that the situation remains very challenging and therefore it has not yet been possible to access the whole site to assess that all safety systems are fully functional.

La Svizzera amplia le sanzioni nei confronti della Russia per l’invasione dell’Ucraina adeguandole alle ultime decisioni dell’Ue.
I provvedimenti entreranno in vigore alle 18.00 di oggi.
Secondo una nota governativa odierna (*), tale adeguamento avviene nel rispetto della neutralità e tiene conto delle attività umanitarie, per le quali sono previste deroghe.
Stando alla rivista ordinanza emanata oggi dal Consiglio federale, le nuove misure colpiscono in particolare il commercio e il settore finanziario, come il divieto di transazioni con la Banca centrale russa e limiti all’uso del sistema SWIFT, e il congelamento dei beni di diverse persone vicine al presidente Vladimir Putin.

“The authorities of the Republic of Poland,” after consultations between the government and President Andrzej Duda, “are ready to deploy - immediately and free of charge - all their MiG-29 jets to the Ramstein Air Base and place them at the disposal of the Government of the United States of America,” according to a statement posted on the Polish government’s official website.
“At the same time, Poland requests the United States to provide us with used aircraft with corresponding operational capabilities. Poland is ready to immediately establish the conditions of purchase of the planes.”
The Polish government also urged other NATO allies that operate MiG-29s “to act in the same vein.”

Ukrainian forces are making good use of their Russian-made air defense systems, and Russia’s slow progress in Ukraine is an indication of how important it is to have air superiority, Air Combat Command boss Gen. Mark D. Kelly said March 9.
However, the U.S. needs new weapons to equip its fighters because adversaries are getting better at detecting even low-observable aircraft.
Speaking at a McAleese and Associates conference in Washington, D.C., Kelly said Russian S-300 and S400 air defense systems are “operating pretty well, operated by Ukrainians.”
Unconfirmed reports indicate dozens of Russian aircraft have been shot down in the week-old invasion of Ukraine.
Russia has also bogged down due to “logistical challenges [and] morale challenges,” Kelly said.
But “one challenge they do not have [is] … an air base defense challenge.
They just don’t, because they operate layer upon layer upon layer of S-300s and S-400s, as well as SA-23s, etc.”
These nested air defense systems have provided Russian forces with good protection against air attack, Kelly said.

“The purpose of these tests, which did not demonstrate ICBM range, was likely to evaluate this new system before conducting a test at full range in the future, potentially disguised as a space launch,” Kirby’s statement read.

Commander of the U.S. Pacific Air Forces, Air Force General Kenneth Wilsbach, confirmed that the two aircraft had at least one encounter over the South China Sea with the Chinese jets having been supported by KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft.
“It’s a bit early to say what they intend to do with the J-20, so really all we’ve seen it do is air superiority,” he said.
“But we notice that they are flying it pretty well. We recently had – I wouldn’t call it an engagement – where we got relatively close to the J-20s along with our F-35s in the East China Sea, and we’re relatively impressed with the command and control associated with the J-20. We’re seeing relatively professional flying and it’s still too early to tell exactly what they intend to do with [the J-20] – whether it’s going to be more like an F-35 that’s capable of doing many, many missions or more like an F-22 that is primarily an air superiority fighter that has an air to ground capability.”

Episodio a dir poco surreale quello a cui ha dovuto assistere l’equipaggio di Nave Carabiniere in transito nel Ponte Girevole di Taranto che mette in comunicazione il Mare Grande con il Mar Piccolo.
La fregata della Marina Militare rientrava in Italia dopo aver partecipato, tra il 4 ed il 5 marzo, alle operazioni condotte dal Carrier Strike Group della portaerei nucleare USS Harry S. Truman nell’Egeo Settentrionale nell’ambito del rafforzamento delle difese dell’Alleanza Atlantica.
Alle 14:45 circa di ieri, oltre alla folta schiera di tarantini che assistono da ormai 135 anni al passaggio di unità della Marina italiana, era presente un gruppo composto da una ventina di persone di così detti “pacifisti” che non è certamente passato inosservato.
Al passaggio della fregata, con parte dell’equipaggio sul ponte, i manifestanti hanno iniziato a lanciare sassi o altri oggetti contro la nave urlando una serie di frasi ingiuriose tra cui “assassini”, “vergogna”, “dovete morire” nonché il classico “fuori l’Italia dalla NATO”.

According to the March 4 report, Xi had been "considering taking over Taiwan in the fall."
Part of the rationale given for that timing was that Xi "needs his own little victory to get re-elected for a third term," a reference to the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, amid what the analyst described as a "colossal" power struggle among China's elite.

La Russia ha già perso?

We are at the one-month mark into Russia's invasion of Ukraine and it looks like things are only set to get bloodier.
Short of a sudden ceasefire and a robust peace deal, which some would argue seems less feasible with each passing day, the war will grind on.
But regardless of if Russia achieves its military objectives in the country, it has already lost in nearly every conceivable way.
What's worse is what awaits them if they succeed in conquering Ukraine's territory — an insurgency the likes of which we have never seen.
It will be one funded by the richest nations on earth and run by hardened fighters in a country absolutely awash with advanced anti-armor and anti-aircraft weaponry.
This, combined with a whole slew of other factors I detailed over three weeks ago — which are more relevant now than they were then — results in the conclusion that there is no conceivable path to a positive outcome to this conflict for Russia.
It can win any battle and seize any city, but the reality is that the country has already lost.

“I think we can do it.”
Speeding or increasing production of the anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons, though, involves heaps of considerations: long-lead procurement, ancillary equipment, field needs and supply chain concerns.

Seven wildfires have broken out in the exclusion zone surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, according to a statement by Ukraine’s Parliament.
The fires, which were observed via satellite, exceed Ukraine’s emergency classification criteria tenfold.
Ukrainian officials stated that the fires were caused by “the armed aggression of the Russian Federation, namely the shelling or arson,” though this has not been independently verified.
Wildfires risk mobilizing and dispersing radioactive contaminants left over from the 1986 nuclear accident at Chernobyl.
Ukrainian firefighters have been unable to access the area since Russia took control in the first days of the war.
Energoatom, Ukraine’s state nuclear company, also reported this week that Chernobyl’s radiation monitoring system is no longer working.
Without the data that system would provide, radiation levels in the region may rise unchecked.
Though the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is no longer operational, it requires constant management.

Arnold Engineering Development Complex has supported the land-based leg of the nation’s nuclear triad, the Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, since 1958 when the first iteration was still in development.
As the complex continues to support the Minuteman III program with aging and surveillance testing of stage II and III motors, Team AEDC has begun providing test and evaluation support for the next-generation nuclear deterrent, the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent.
“The Ground Based Strategic Deterrent ICBM is a total weapon system replacement of the Minuteman III weapon system,” said Rick Gamble, a subject matter expert with AEDC.
The Air Force Test Center is the Minuteman III and GBSD lead developmental test and evaluation organization, and AEDC, a wing-equivalent organization within AFTC, is the executing test organization.
The ICBM Test Branch of AEDC’s Test Division and the GBSD Combined Test Force provide personnel to support ICBM developmental test and evaluation.
Other branches within the Test Division and the 704th Test Group of AEDC provide the facilities and personnel to perform ground testing.
