Enthusiasts examining the patch for NROL-35 think the trident, fire and breeze through the character’s hair might represent the elements—water, fire and wind.
“What that has to do with the actual payload, however, is anyone’s guess,” says space historian Robert Pearlman.
(National Reconnaissance Office)

NRO Payload Launched .....

(12/16/2014)

The Air Force and its industry partners launched a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying a National Reconnaissance Office payload into space from Vandenberg AFB, Calif.
"This Atlas V launch marked the last of the year and I am very proud of the teamwork that led to the success of not only today's launch, but those that preceded," said Col. Keith Balts, 30th Space Wing commander, of the Dec. 12 mission in Vandy's release.

http://www.afspc.af.mil/news1/story.asp?id=123434390

The Atlas configuration used in the mission, designated NROL-35, had four solid rocket boosters, along with the Atlas V's main engine.
This made it "the most powerful Atlas ever launched from California, with more than two million pounds of liftoff thrust," said Jim Sponnick, ULA vice president, in a release.

http://www.ulalaunch.com/ula-atlas-v-su ... nce+Office

The mission also marked the inaugural flight of the Aerojet Rocketdyne RL10C-1 engine.
"ULA is extremely pleased with this first flight of the new RL10C-1 engine," said Sponnick.
NROL-35 was the third and final NRO launch in 2014, according to NRO's release.

493rd Fighter Squadron ..... un'attività frenetica .....
Lakenheath Eagles Seize Top Fighter Squadron .....

(1/30/2015)

The F-15Cs of the 493rd Fighter Squadron claimed top fighter squadron honors, winning the 2014 Raytheon Trophy, officials announced on Wednesday.

http://www.lakenheath.af.mil/news/story ... =123437600

The unit deployed four times last year including NATO air policing rotations to Lithuania and Iceland, an emergency dispatch to Lithuania when Russia invaded Ukraine, and a quick-notice allied assurance mission to Bulgaria.
In Lithuania, the "Reapers" intercepted 31 Russian aircraft in and around NATO airspace, flew 221 armed over watch sorties.
They deployed six additional F-15Cs to the Baltic in less than 20 hours, in response to Russian aggression.
They continued operations in Lithuania through an alert rotation to Iceland, totaling 195 days of split-deployment, according to unit officials.
"I'm constantly in awe of what the team accomplishes," said former 493rd FS Commander Lt. Col. John Stratton.
The unit has won the Raytheon Trophy four times, most recently in 2007, according to the release.

Additionally, Britain rejoined the mission and air detachments from Italy and Belgium are also contributing forces to the current four-month rotation.

http://www.aeronautica.difesa.it/News/P ... vegia.aspx

Norway deployed four F-16s to Lithuania for the rotation and will be joined by four Italian Eurofighter jets at Siauliai, while four British Eurofighters operate from Amari AB, Estonia.
Belgium has deployed four F-16s to Malbork AB, Poland, for this rotation.
The Alliance has increased the size and scope of this mission since Russia’s aggression in Ukraine last year.
NATO jets scrambled more than 150 times in response to Russian air activity over the Baltics in 2014, four times the number of scrambles in 2013, said Alliance officials.

Moscow has dispatched a specialized spy ship off the coast of Hawaii with the likely mission to monitor the U.S. Navy led Rim of the Pacific 2016 exercise, USNI News has learned.
A Russian Navy Bal’zam-class, “auxiliary general intelligence ship recently arrived in international waters off Hawaii where exercise Rim of the Pacific is taking place,” U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman Lt. Clint Ramsden told USNI News this week.
“The ship’s presence has not affected the conduct of the exercise and we’ve taken all precautions necessary to protect our critical information.”
While it wasn’t unusual at all in during the Cold War for Russian spy ships to linger off the coast of the U.S. to suck up signals intelligence information or monitor exercises like RIMPAC, the Russians have been lax in their surveillance until recently.

The increased activity comes after Russian aircraft had not flown near Alaska for about two and a half years.
While the Pentagon doesn’t know what Russia’s thinking was behind the intercepts, there was a maintenance issue with the bomber fleet that kept them grounded during this span.
So the increase could be related to the aircraft returning to regular flight.
