DARPA plans to test-fly a prototype F-15-carried rapid and affordable light weight satellite launch vehicle later this year, and potentially blast a test vehicle into orbit as early as 2016, officials announced.
"We’ve made good progress so far toward [Airborne Launch Assisted Space Access'] ambitious goal of propelling 100-pound satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO) within 24 hours of call-up, all for less than $1 million per launch," said Bradford Tousley, DARPA tactical technology director.
DARPA worked with Lockheed Martin Skunk Works to mature the technology .....

Nella LEO la resistenza residuale dell'atmosfera non è trascurabile e tutti i satelliti a quella quota sono destinati al rientro, ad orbite superiori il problema si pone e, generalmente, viene utilizzata un'orbita cimitero a fine vita...

A military weather satellite cracked up Feb. 3 after the power system overheated causing it to spin out of control, Air Force Space Command officials told Air Force Magazine in a statement released March 3.
The Joint Space Operations Center "identified a debris field" indicating Defense Meteorological Satellite Program flight 13 disintegrated into 43 bits of debris.
"While the initial response is complete, JSpOC personnel will continue to assess this event to learn more about what happened and what it will mean for users within this orbit," Col. John Giles, JSpOC Director, said in the statement.
DMSP 13 was the oldest operational satellite in the constellation, and was relegated to back-up status in 2006.
Operators took action to "render the vehicle safe" soon after the temperature spike, and the debris does not appear to pose a collision risk to other space assets, according to the statement.
JSpOC is continuing to monitor and warn of any potential risks, said AFSPC officials.
The most recent DMSP satellite, DMSP 19, launched last April.

Si levano critiche e si pongono domande ......

U.S. Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) took nearly a month to openly acknowledge to the press that one of the country’s oldest satellites fragmented into 43 pieces in orbit last month, creating a debris field.
This is viewed by some as too slow and underscores an argument that the military is the wrong place for oversight and management of space traffic, according to one influential onlooker.
