Gli 'Skunk Works' sono di nuovo all' opera .....

..... stanno progettando un successore stealth del leggendario U-2 .....
Lockheed Martin Skunk Works is designing a next-generation high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) surveillance airplane, known internally as RQ-X or UQ-2, as an optionally-manned successor to the U-2 and Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk.
U-2 programme officials told reporters at the Skunk Works headquarters in Palmdale, California, that its engineers have been mulling designs for stealthy HALE platform that would combine the best of the U-2 and its unmanned rival, the Global Hawk.
The advanced research and development arm of Lockheed is essentially pursuing an improved version of the U-2, which is powered by the same General Electric F118 engine and optimised to fly at 70,000ft or higher.
It would carry many of the same sensors, since those are already calibrated for use at that altitude.
The biggest difference will be the aircraft’s low-observable characteristics.

Riguardo al motore ed alla tangenza massima .....
To reduce development costs the design also utilizes the same General Electric F118 turbofan which was used to re-engine the U-2/TR-1 fleet in the mid-1990s.
“It’s a very good engine and it’s relatively new. We would look at using the same engine because of the cost but, on the other hand, if they say [the altitude requirement was] 90,000 ft. then that means a new engine. We would then go back and see what is out there and that may mean redesigning something,” says Winstead.

In forma dubitativa .....
I got the impression from Winstead that, while Skunk Works definitely has done substantial design work for this aircraft — RQ-X? — this is in the we-could-do-it-if-they-ask-us-to box.
He told me there is no requirement for it nor has there been great interest expressed by the Air Force.
Should the Air Force decide it does need this new plane, Skunk Works could deliver it quickly IF the requirement is clear and does not change, Austin told us.

Il nuovo U-2 ..... evoluzione di un progetto .....
Lockheed Martin Skunk Works’ proposal for a next-generation, optionally-manned U-2 surveillance aircraft has morphed into more of a tactical reconnaissance aircraft dubbed “TR-X”.
The designation is both a throwback to the U-2’s TR-1 designation in the 1980s but also symbolises a change in thinking that could drive the design to be more of an affordable peace and wartime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) workhorse than a strategic, penetrating platform – like the supersonic Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.
Fonte ..... " Lockheed Skunk Works' next-generation U-2 morphs into 'TR-X' " .....
https://www.flightglobal.com/news/artic ... nt-416709/

Inoltre ..... dal 'Daily Report' dell' AFA .....
Lockheed Promotes TR-X U-2 Replacement .....

John A. Tirpak (09/15/2015)

Lockheed Martin is preparing an unsolicited offer to the Air Force for a “TR-X” replacement for the U-2, and could have something flying by 2025 if given the go-ahead.
Scott Winstead, company U-2 strategic business manager, said at a press briefing during ASC15 that the aircraft would be a cost-effective way to continue the “complementary” role of the U-2 with the RQ-4 Global Hawk because it could re-use the U-2S General Electric F414 engines, which have a lot of life left in them, as well as many of the U-2’s unique sensors and reconnaissance systems.
What would be new, he said, is an airframe that would be stealthy enough to survive in heavily defended airspace.
As it stands, the U-2S has enough structural life to serve until 2045, he said, but conditions will change long before then, requiring more survivability.
The notional TR-X could also perform electronic warfare, communications node, and even laser attack missions.
Winstead said a fleet of 25-30 airplanes would be sufficient to take over the duties now performed by 18 U-2s and 25 Global Hawks.
The design would change, however, if the Air Force wants an aircraft able to fly at 90,000 feet.
That, Winstead said, “would require new engines.”
The notional design would have a longer airframe and somewhat larger wings and elevators than the U-2; it could be optionally manned, but more likely unmanned if USAF wants endurance of longer than 20-22 hours.
The U-2S limit today - driven by the endurance of the pilot - is about 14 hours.
Asked about prospects for a sale - given that the U-2 has been terminated and resurrected several times - Winstead said “the design will have to sell itself.”
The notional name, TR-X, harkens back to when the U-2 was called the TR-1, and had a distinctly tactical mission.
Lockheed sees a similar role for the jet in the future, Winstead noted.

'Un nuovo U-2? Vedremo' ..... così parlò il generale Otto .....
New U-2? We'll See .....

Arie Church (10/02/2015)

Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance boss Lt. Gen. Bob Otto .....
http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/Biographies/D ... -otto.aspx
said he hasn't discussed Lockheed Martin's proposed U-2 follow-on platform with the company but he is enthusiastic that industry is putting forward ideas.
"I think it's exciting that industry is coming up with ideas on how we can modernize, so I want to encourage that, my hat's off to Lockheed," Otto said, speaking at a roundtable in Washington, D.C., Oct. 1.
The next generation airborne ISR platform needs to be capable of penetrating anti-access, area-denial defenses, meaning "we're going to have to have some low-observable characteristics" as a given, said Otto.
Lockheed Martin's notional TR-X incorporates low observable elements with an optionally-manned capability anticipating high-end requirements.
"We want to improve upon things that we've seen with the Global Hawk - certainly we want the ability for it to be all-weather" and equipped with "exquisite sensors" that would allow stand-off as well as close-in ISR, Otto added.
"The question that I would have is 'what gap would it fill that is not currently being filled?'"
The company anticipates TR-X replacing the U-2 and Global Hawk fleets by roughly 2025, though Otto said both aircraft could last "much longer" if needed.
"So, what would cause us to do the upgrade? We'd have to see," said Otto.

L' episodio è stato raccontato in dettaglio da Sergei N. Chruščëv (figlio dell' ex premier dell' Unione Sovietica Nikita S. Chruščëv) nel volume di memorie "Nikita Khrushchev and the Creation of a Superpower" (The Pennsylvania State University Press - 2000) .....

Lockheed Martin’s plan to construct a fleet of 30 high-altitude, single-engined tactical reconnaissance aircraft from cannibalised U-2S Dragon Lady and RQ-4B Global Hawk components would take 10 years and cost approximately $3.8 billion if adopted, a company official says.
Called TR-X, the programme would furnish low-observable airframes – powered by the U-2’s GE Aviation F118 non-afterburning turbofan engine – with sensor suites and antennas from the manned Lockheed U-2 and remotely piloted Northrop Grumman RQ-4B.
