Alcuni F-35B dei Marines saranno presto a bordo della nave portaelicotteri giapponese Izumo ...
U.S Marine F-35Bs from Iwakuni will support the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s post refit trials of the destroyer helicopter carrier JS Izumo (DDH183) next month.
The Marine Corps aircraft will work with the JMSDF in the Pacific Ocean from Oct. 3 through Oct. 7, according to a Thursday news release from the Japan Defense Ministry.
Izumo in June completed the first of a two-stage modification that will enable it to operate the F-35, with the first stage adding heat resistant coating to the flight deck and flight line markings for F-35 operations.
The release did not say which squadron the aircraft would come from or how many USMC F-35Bs will be embarked for the trials.
The U.S. Marines have two F-35B squadrons operating from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, with the “Bats” of Marine Corps Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 242 declaring initial operating capability on Sept. 9.
The other squadron – the “Green Knights” of VMFA-121 – reached IOC in July 2015, before deploying to Japan in January 2017.

Two Marine Corps F-35B Lighting II Joint Strike Fighters took off and landed on Japan’s largest warship, JS Izumo (DDH-183), on Oct.3, marking the first time that fixed-wing aircraft have operated off a Japanese warship since World War II.
The two F-35Bs from the “Bats” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 242 flew from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, to operate on Izumo to test modifications to the big deck warship so the short takeoff, vertical landing (STOVL) version of the F-35 can operate from the ship.
“This verification is the first time for an F-35B fighter to land on a [Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force] vessel, and Japan is working to improve its capabilities in the maritime and air domains by steadily upgrading the Izumo-class destroyer in order to acquire the ability to operate STOVL aircraft,” reads a Tuesday statement (*) from the JMSDF.

F-35Bs from HMS Queen Elizabeth have refuelled from a US Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet.
According to the Royal Air Force:

F-35B Lightnings from 617 Squadron have conducted Air to Air Refuelling from a US Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet for the first time.
The refuelling sortie occurred during exercises with the US Navy aircraft carriers USS Ronald Reagan and USS Carl Vinson in the Pacific region.
This was part of interoperability training, and is known as buddy-buddy refuelling.
During the exercise RAF Marham based 617 Squadron also took the opportunity to conduct a joint fly past with US Navy and US Marine Corps jets over the combined fleet of carriers and their escorts.

Un "report" di Flight International rivela interessanti dettagli sull'operatività degli F-35B Anglo-Americani a bordo della portaerei Queen Elizabeth ...
HMS Queen Elizabeth opens new era of UK airpower in Asia-Pacific ...

By Greg Waldron (Flight International) - 12 October 2021

Immagine

FlightGlobal caught up with HMS Queen Elizabeth during a short port call in Singapore, following its extensive deployment in North Asia as part of the Carrier Strike Group 21 deployment.
The 65,000t vessel’s recent visit to the city-state marked the first time in years that a Royal Navy (RN) aircraft carrier called at the former British outpost.
The vessel had passed through the Singapore Straits in late July, but continued on to North Asia, where the RN had a busy schedule of exercises with regional allies including Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and the USA.
Prior to arriving back in Singapore, the carrier exercised with the Republic of Singapore Navy, with its Lockheed Martin F-35Bs working with Republic of Singapore Air Force Lockheed F-16s.
Given concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, the ship’s crew was restricted to the vessel during the stay in Singapore.
After testing negative for Covid-19, visitors to the ship were issued N95 masks and rubber surgical gloves.
A unique feature of Queen Elizabeth’s air wing is its joint nature, comprising 18 F-35Bs drawn from the Royal Air Force’s (RAF’s) 617 Squadron and the US Marine Corps’ (USMC’s) Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211.
In addition, the vessel carries Leonardo Helicopters AW101 Merlins from 820 and 845 Naval Air Squadrons.
The strike group’s commander, Commodore Steve Moorhouse, told a media gathering on the ship that cooperation and interoperability of the RAF and USMC F-35Bs has been excellent.
“As a commander, I’m almost blind to who’s flying it,” he says. “I ask for F-35s, and I don’t care which squadron they are coming from.”
This also carries over to the maintenance realm, where spare parts are shared between the RAF and USMC – in some cases, spares have come from other allied vessels.
That said, USMC and RAF engineers do not work on each other’s aircraft, mainly owing to permissions specific to the US and British governments.
Moreover, US Navy weapons loaders are present aboard Queen Elizabeth owing to differences in the weapons that USMC aircraft carry versus their RAF counterparts.
Industry representatives are embarked to support both squadrons.
Moorhouse says learnings have travelled both ways.
The RN and RAF have benefited from the USMC’s experience with operating F-35Bs at sea.
The USMC, in turn, has learned about operating aircraft from a British carrier.
Moorhouse says sustainment has gone well and that readiness rates are good.
He notes that the F-35B, with its short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capability, can pretty much operate from any flat top – even those from other nations.
“What we’ve also seen out here is the flexibility of the F-35B … where if you’re operating a big deck with F-35B, any nation can come and go, so you’ve got this incredible flexibility.”
Although the STOVL-capable F-35B as well as the F-35A (conventional take-off and landing) and F-35C (catapult assisted take-off but arrested recovery) are becoming more commonplace, there was considerable sensitivity around the low-observable type aboard Queen Elizabeth.
On typical aircraft carrier tours, visitors are free to wander up to aircraft and snap close-up pictures.
Aboard the Queen Elizabeth, however, visitors were asked to keep a respectful distance from the F-35Bs, particularly when taking photographs.
An “F-35B Photography Guide” in the media kit indicated sensitive areas that should not be directly photographed, such as the intakes, cockpit, lift-fan, and the rear of the engine.
On deck, every F-35B engine intake was covered, as was the interior of the thrust nozzle.
Pictures were not allowed in the hangar bay, where a few aircraft were undergoing maintenance.
Eighteen F-35Bs are embarked on the Carrier Strike Group 2021 deployment, but the vessel can carry up to 36.
An RN officer suggests that 36 fighters probably will not be part of the vessel’s typical load out.
Such a large contingent of embarked jets would have a considerable support footprint.
Still, the two main elevators can load a pair of F-35Bs each, supporting the rapid movement of aircraft down to and up from the hangar bay as necessary.
Another hallmark of Queen Elizabeth are the large display screens on her flight deck and in the hangar bay.
These inform the deck crew about air movements, such as which aircraft is about to take-off or land.
During the day the lettering is green, but this switches to red for night operations.
The vessel’s deck has a special coating that one officer says is “extremely expensive”.
It is designed to cope with – and rapidly dissipate – the high temperatures generated by the downward-directed jet wash from landing F-35Bs.
The deck coating is so effective at dissipating heat that flight deck crew can safely walk across the landing area after a fighter arrives.
During a media briefing aboard the ship Moorhouse was pressed about any encounters with Chinese forces during Queen Elizabeth’s voyage in the region.
He says that while Chinese units were sometimes in the task force’s vicinity, they kept a distance and behaved “professionally”.
RAF chief of the air staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston, who spoke with Moorhouse aboard the ship, adds that the RAF now operates similar types to air forces in the region.
These include the F-35, as well as assets such as the Airbus Defence & Space A330 multi-role tanker transport, A400M tactical transport, and Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
These fleet similarities are consistent with the UK’s desire to play a greater role in the Asia-Pacific.
“For the first time in many decades, the Royal Air Force is operating similar platforms to a number of the air forces in the region,” says Wigston.
“That offers lots of opportunities for squadron exchanges, partnering…there’s lots of opportunities there.”
Following its short visit to Singapore, Queen Elizabeth will head back through the Straits of Malacca to the Andaman Sea and beyond.
The Carrier Strike Group is expected back in the UK well before Christmas.

La Queen Elizabeth ha lasciato Singapore ...
Britain’s new aircraft carrier departed Singapore Tuesday, bringing an end to a nearly three month deployment to the western Pacific.
The deployment of the Royal Navy’s largest warship underscores the growing geopolitical complexities in the region, brought about in part by increasing Chinese assertiveness in the region.
The 65,000-ton HMS Queen Elizabeth had arrived in Singapore barely 24 hours earlier following exercises with the southeast Asian island nation’s military, which included the carrier’s Lockheed-Martin F-35B Lighting II Joint Strike Fighters training with Singaporean F-16 fighter jets.
The aircraft carrier carried 18 F-35Bs on this deployment, of which eight were from the Royal Air Force’s 617 Squadron and the remainder being U.S. Marine Corps aircraft from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron or VMFA 211.

La U.S. Navy come l'USAF ...
US Navy interested in 64 "Tactical Surrogate Aircraft" ...

By Garrett Reim (Flight International) - 22 October 2021

The US Navy (USN) is researching options for a “Tactical Surrogate Aircraft”.
The aircraft would supplement flight time and training in frontline combat aircraft, provide adversary air support and serve as a flight lead aircraft for Fleet Replacement Squadrons, a unit that trains naval aviators on frontline combat aircraft, such as the Lockheed Martin F-35C and Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
The service’s interest was expressed in a request for information, posted on 20 October, and appears to have parallels to the US Air Force’s (USAF) “Reforge” pilot training concept, which would use advanced jet trainers instead of actual fighter aircraft to teach modern combat aviation skills.
In fact, it is virtually identical to an “Advanced Tactical Trainer” request for information that the USAF posted on 12 October.
“The aircraft needs to simulate and/or replicate current and future fighter aircraft systems by providing the training environment and relevant experience to build tactical skills, systems management skills, and decision making skills required for weapon system employment actions”, says the USN.
The service says it is notionally interested in buying 64 aircraft, with deliveries beginning in fiscal year 2024 or FY2025.
For its part, the USAF says it is interested in at least 100 Advanced Tactical Trainers.
The USN wants a two-seat fighter type aircraft “configured for single seat operations with alternate options for rear cockpit use”.
It is interested in knowing about the cost to remove rear the crew station and replace it with “permanent additional fuel or avionics bay volume”.
The aircraft should have a minimum level aircraft speed of at least 600kt (1,111km/h).
It should have a minimum ceiling of at least 45,000ft above mean sea level.
The jet’s structure ought to at a minimum be able to handle 7.5G of force and a sustained 6G of force at 10,000ft.
The aircraft should have a minimum flight endurance of 90min, including 30min of tactical manoeuvring.
The jet should be able to fly basic fighter manoeuvring, air-to-air and air-to-ground mission profiles.
The USN wants the jet aircraft’s cockpit to have large area displays with an open architecture configuration.
The Tactical Surrogate Aircraft should have an “operational flight program to replicate frontline [type model series] aircraft displays and enable simulated displays of aircraft combat systems, simulated inputs, and simulated weapons”.
The service wants the aircraft to be able to carry a captive air training missile on one wingtip and a tactical combat training system, or an air combat manoeuvring instrumentation pod, on the other wingtip – equipment used to conduct virtual weapons training.
The USN also wants a wing station to carry an electronic attack or electronic counter measures pod.
The USAF and USN are fielding a growing number of advanced F-35 stealth fighters that require pilots to manage and use many complex electronics systems at once, for example, active electronically scanned array radars, long-range air-to-air missiles, and electronic warfare equipment.
US military services are also facing off against increasingly sophisticated foes, such as China and Russia, that have their own stealth fighters.
The increased complexity of modern aerial combat has caused the services to rethink how they train fighter pilots.
As a first step toward improving combat pilot training, the USAF in 2018 selected Boeing for a $9 billion contract to produce 351 “T-X” advanced jet trainers and 46 ground simulators.
The company’s T-7A Red Hawk is now to replace to the service’s aging fleet of Northrop T-38C Talons.
In 2020, the USN kicked off its search for a new advanced jet trainer to replace its Boeing T-45 Goshawk fleet.
The service has 191 T-45s in its fleet, according to Cirium fleets analyser.
However, despite their advanced trainer programmes, the USAF and USN appear to believe they need additional light-weight jets for higher-end training and adversarial air exercises.
Competitors in the Tactical Surrogate Aircraft and Advanced Tactical Trainers programmes would likely include past contestants in the T-X programme: Boeing’s T-7A, Lockheed Martin’s T-50A, based on the FA-50 light-attack/trainer developed with Korea Aerospace Industries; and Leonardo’s T-100, based on the company’s M-346.

La Marina USA ha fatto una rivelazione ...
... the CVW of the 2030s is described as a complementary mix of F-35C Lightning II, F/A-18E/F Block III Super Hornet, and a next generation strike fighter dubbed F/A-XX.
The F/A-XX is the strike fighter component within the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) Family of Systems (FoS).
The requirement for this aircraft has been around since 2008, with a formal Request for Information in 2012, to replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in the 2030s.
Later, the F/A-XX was included in the NGAD program which, by the way, is a separate program from the identically named Air Force program.
The Navy says that its “specific capabilities and technologies are under development, however analysis shows it must have longer range and greater speed, incorporate passive and active sensor technology, and possess the capability to employ the longer-range weapons programmed for the future”.
The NGAD FoS will include unmanned platforms with F/A-XX as the quarterback, exploiting the Manned/UnManned Teaming (MUM-T) concept to reduce risk to the manned aircraft, while simultaneously increasing capability, capacity, and survivability.

It may look the same superficially, but Sikorsky's new CH-53K King Stallion represents a dramatic leap in capability compared with its predecessor, the CH-53E.
The Marine Corps eagerly awaits the latest iteration of the CH-53 heavylifter, which is making steady progress towards service entry following earlier delays caused by technical issues, and with Sikorsky recently handing over the first production aircraft to the Marine Corps.
Despite still undergoing an intensive phase of trials, the CH-53K has even notched its first official fleet mission, when an aircraft recovered a downed MH-60S Knighthawk from Mount Hogue in California’s White Mountains.

Un F-35B della portaerei britannica Queen Elizabeth è precipitato nel Mare Mediterraneo ... salvo il pilota ...
A U.K. F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter operating from Royal Navy carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08) crashed in the Mediterranean on Wednesday, the U.K. Ministry of Defense announced.
A British F-35 pilot from HMS Queen Elizabeth ejected during routine flying operations in the Mediterranean this morning,” reads a statement from the MoD.
The pilot has been safely returned to the ship and an investigation has begun, so it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
The crash occurred at about 10 a.m. London time and no other ships or aircraft were involved, an MoD spokesperson told USNI News.
As of Wednesday morning, other type models of U.K. F-35s were still flying without restrictions, the spokesperson said.
Queen Elizabeth deployed with a blended air wing that includes the “Wake Island Avengers” of U.S. Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 211 and the Royal Air Force’s 617 Squadron “The Dambusters.”
The MoD would not identify the service branch of the pilot of the crashed F-35.
RAF and Royal Navy pilots fly the U.K. F-35s.
The carrier strike group is on its final leg of its inaugural deployment after departing the U.K. for its deployment on May 22 with eight RAF F-35Bs and 10 Marine F-35Bs.

Israel’s Ministry of Defense now has a green light to spend more than $2 billion on a fleet of Sikorsky CH-53K heavy-lift helicopters.
Multiple Israeli media outlets report that a committee of government officials that oversee defense spending approved the $2.4 billion deal in a meeting on Nov. 28.

On the recommendation of the Ministry of Defense, the deal is good for 10 to 15 helicopters to replace the Israeli Air Force’s aging CH-53 “Yasur” helicopters.

Il 'bestione' continua a darsi da fare ... 💪
Marines recently transported a 12-ton light armored vehicle from an amphibious assault ship to shore with a testing version of the Corps’ most workhorse of helicopters.
The Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron One, or VMX-1, did the over-the-horizon heavy lift and troop transport ship-to-shore maneuver over the Atlantic Ocean from Nov. 19–21 using the CH-53K King Stallion helicopter, according to a Marine Corps statement (*).
Moving such heavy gear and troops is key to future combat operations concepts such as expeditionary advanced base operations that the Marines are leaning into so that they can enable naval forces in future fights.

Dodici elicotteri pesanti Lockheed Martin CH-53K per Israele ... e non solo ...
The Defense Ministry has signed an agreement with the US government to acquire 12 Lockheed Martin CH-53K helicopters and two additional Boeing KC-46 refueling aircraft.
The Defense Department’s procurement delegation signed the letters of acceptance with Israel on Thursday evening to replace the Israel Air Force’s CH-53 Yasur heavy-lift helicopters and Ra’am (Boeing 707) tanker aircraft that are required for long-range missions.
“These procurement agreements are significant milestones in the IDF’s force buildup processes,” said Defense Minister Benny Gantz.
“We continue to strengthen our capabilities and to change and adapt our air force to face future challenges both near and far.”

Ed è pure caduto in mare ... :o
The F-35C Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter that crashed on the deck of aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and injured seven sailors was lost over the edge of the flight deck, U.S. 7th Fleet said early Tuesday in a statement.
The Navy said Carl Vinson was able to resume flight operations shortly after the crash of the F-35.
“An F-35C Lightning II assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, embarked aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) had a landing mishap and impacted the flight deck and subsequently fell to the water during routine flight operations,” the statement said.
“Impact to the flight deck was superficial and all equipment for flight operations is operational. Carrier Air Wing 2 and USS Carl Vinson have resumed routine flight operations in the South China Sea.”

La Marina USA sta prendendo in considerazione il recupero dello F-35C caduto nel Mar Cinese Meridionale nei giorni scorsi ...
The U.S. Navy says it is assessing its options for recovering an F-35C Joint Strike Strike Fighter that fell into the South China Sea yesterday after a failed landing attempt on board the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson.
The service is almost certain to try to retrieve as much of the jet as possible to prevent sensitive components, and the information about aircraft's advanced capabilities that might be gleaned from them, from falling into the hands of America's competitors, such as Russia or China.
The U.S. Seventh Fleet, headquartered in Japan, confirmed that the F-35C had fallen off Carl Vinson's deck as a result of the accident in a statement this morning.
The U.S. Pacific Fleet's public affairs office had previously declined to confirm or deny that detail.

The Navy is investigating the unauthorized release of a video that shows the ramp strike of an F-35C Lightning II aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).
The footage comes from flight deck cameras aboard the carriers, Cmdr. Zach Harrell, spokesperson for commander, Naval Air Forces, told USNI News.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, according to the statement.
The video shows both the ramp strike and the aircraft’s high-speed slide across the carrier deck before the F-35C falls into the sea.

USS Carl Vinson e “Air Wing of the Future” ... rientro negli Stati Uniti dopo oltre sei mesi di esperienze accumulate in occasione del lungo dispiegamento nella regione Indo-Pacifico ...
Aircraft carrier Carl Vinson returned home Feb. 14 after a six-and-a-half-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific, in the U.S. Navy’s first deployment of the “air wing of the future.”
The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group and its Carrier Air Wing 2 brought along an F-35C Joint Strike Fighter squadron in its first-ever operational deployment, and they worked with a detachment of CMV-22 Ospreys as the carrier onboard delivery aircraft.
The “air wing of the future” also included two additional EA-18G Growlers and one additional E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft, bolstering the air wing’s ability to sense the operating area and share data from those sensors across the CSG.

Four senior enlisted sailors and a junior officer are facing charges for their alleged role in releasing government video footage from aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) showing the ramp strike of an F-35C Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter last month, USNI News has learned.
Following the investigation into the leak of a cell phone video recording the crash from Vinson’s Pilot’s Landing Aid Television (PLAT), the Navy has charged one senior chief, three chiefs and an ensign with failure to obey a lawful order under Article 92 the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Cmdr. Zach Harrell a spokesperson for Naval Air Forces told USNI News.
Harrell would not identify the sailors when asked by USNI News.

NGAD navale ... la Marina USA continua a mantenere la segretezza sia sul velivolo che sui suoi costi ...
The Navy is spending more money to develop its sixth-generation fighter program but is keeping the costs classified for the third year in a row, the service said on Monday.
For the last three budget cycles, the Navy has classified the research and development dollars it’s spending on Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) and service officials have provided few details about the program due to the classification.
The Fiscal Year 2023 proposal, unveiled Monday, lists NGAD under the aircraft section of its research and development efforts without dollar figures.
“Although NGAD is a classified line, investments do go up over the [Future Years Defense Program] somewhat dramatically for NGAD,” Rear Adm. John Gumbleton, the Navy’s deputy assistant secretary for budget, told reporters during a Monday briefing.
Gumbleton was referring to the Pentagon’s five-year budget outlook.
