The Marines broke a record on Sunday when they loaded the most 16 F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters ever aboard a big-deck amphibious warship.
Under cloudy skies on Sunday afternoon, deck sailors directed Marine pilots onto launching spots and maneuvered others into parking spots on the flight deck USS Tripoli (LHA-7), the Navy’s newest big deck amphibious warship, with more coming later this week.
The fighters belong to two operational squadrons — the “Vikings” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 225 and the “Wake Island Avengers” of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211, both based at Yuma Marine Corps Air Station, Ariz. – and to Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1, based at Yuma and New River, N.C.
The Marine Corps is fielding the advanced, multi-mission aircraft to replace its older F/A-18 Hornet and AV-8B Harrier jets.
But bringing more than a dozen of the F-35B jets aboard Tripoli for flight operations – a number that could grow to 18 or 20 this week – along with 500 Marines isn’t just about breaking records and a photo opportunity, military officials told USNI News.
Rather, the week-long MAG-13 training event with Tripoli is the start of identifying and building capabilities for the big deck and its crew and for Marines and their jets to conduct integrated MAG-level operations at sea, something that hasn’t been done in a generation.

Demonstrating its advanced capabilities in the fleet environment, the CH-53K heavy lift helicopter completed Initial Operational Test & Evaluation test vignettes (IOT&E) paving the way for the expected declaration by the U.S. Marine Corps of Initial Operational Capability (IOC) later this year and a Full Rate Production decision in 2023.
Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, built four System Demonstration Test Article CH-53K helicopters and delivered them to the Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron One (VMX-1), in Jacksonville, North Carolina, to support the seven-month evaluation, which concluded in March.
“The performance of these intelligent aircraft during Marine-operated flight tests displays the CH‑53K’s operational effectiveness and ensures it will support Marines at the forefront of combat capability and heavy lift for decades to come,” said Bill Falk, Sikorsky’s CH-53K program director.
“The CH‑53K delivers greater lift and endurance capabilities over the legacy aircraft. Its fly-by-wire system reduces pilot workload and enhances the ability to refuel in midair, which is critical to expanding the Marine Corps operational flexibility across all U.S. and allied military services, making the CH-53K a powerful asset for the Marines evolving missions.”

The future F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter will operate as the Navy’s “quarterback” for manned and unmanned teaming in future carrier operations, according to the service.
Navy officials described the vision for the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, meant to expand the range for carrier-based operations, in written testimony to Congress this week.
“The NGAD [family of systems] will replace the F/A-18E/F Block II aircraft as they begin to reach end of service life in the 2030s and leverage Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) in order to provide increased lethality and survivability,” reads joint testimony from Department of Navy acquisition officials.
“F/A-XX is the strike fighter component of the NGAD FoS that will be the ‘Quarterback’ of the MUM-T concept, directing multiple tactical platforms at the leading edge of the battlespace.”

In rotta verso il Pacifico Occidentale ...
Amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA-7) departed Naval Station San Diego, Calif., on an independent deployment to the Western Pacific on Monday, USNI News has learned.
The 45,000-ton big-deck amphibious ship left San Diego to gather F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters that will include further testing of the Marine’s “lightning carrier” concept, a defense official confirmed to USNI News.
The lightning carrier can load up to 20 of the short take-off, vertically landing F-35s as an adjunct capability to a carrier strike group, USNI News understands.
A U.S. 3rd Fleet spokesman confirmed to USNI News the big-deck left San Diego on Monday, but did not provide additional details on the deployment.

On May 17, 2022 Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 242 achieved Full Operational Capability (FOC) and is now ready to support the full complement of its missions.
A significant part of this milestone is the establishment of 32 F-35B aircraft permanently forward-based as part of Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 12, ready to support a free and open Indo-Pacific.
This transition occurred on schedule per the annual Marine Corps aviation plan.
The F-35 Lightning II aircraft represents the future of Marine Corps tactical aviation and will eventually replace the AV-8B Harrier, the F/A-18 Hornet, and the EA-6B Prowler in all units across the Marine Corps.
On October 16, 2020, VMFA-242, known as Bats, was re-designated as an F-35B squadron and on September 9, 2021, the squadron attained Initial Operational Capability (IOC).

Addio ... Kittyhawk ... :salute:
The Navy’s last conventional super carriers arrived in Brownsville, Texas this week after taking one last towed sail before getting scrapped.
The former USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) reached South Padre Island, near the Texas-Mexico border, on Tuesday as veterans of one of the Navy’s last conventional carriers looked on ...
The ship is now at International Shipbreaking Limited, which bought the supercarrier for a penny last year to dismantle and recycle.
The shipyard will also scrap the former USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), similarly purchased for a penny.
A spokesperson for International Shipbreaking Limited said the yard will begin “actual structural dismantling in July” and plans to finish the dismantling process in about 18 months.
The expected completion date is December 2023.

Il ruolo che ebbe l'U.S. Navy nel raid di Son Tay ...
Early after midnight on 21 November 1970, the U.S. Navy in the Gulf of Tonkin executed what should be lauded as the greatest special operations deception in modern warfare by assisting the Army and the Air Force in their attempt to rescue American prisoners of war from Son Tay in North Vietnam.
Perhaps the main reason why this unique operation is not regarded as such by our military historians is because its principal creator, Vice Admiral Frederick A. Bardshar, Commander of Task Force 77 (TF-77), ordered his subordinates to destroy all copies of the plans and prohibited publicity about the operation’s execution.
Now, more than 50 years later, it is recognized by historians as a tremendous tactical success, and the Navy deserves due credit for its critical role in it.
The raid did not rescue anyone; however, it saved the lives of many suffering prisoners and resulted in more humane treatment for all who remained captive in North Vietnam.

Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin Company, delivered the third Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) CH-53K helicopter ahead of contract schedule to the U.S. Marine Corps.
This aircraft, built in Sikorsky’s digital factory, is the first CH-53K from the Lot 2 LRIP contract awarded by the U.S. Navy in 2019, and the seventh overall delivered to the fleet.
The CH‑53K’s heavy-lift capabilities exceed all other U.S. Department of Defense rotary wing platforms and is the only heavy-lift helicopter that will remain in production through 2032 and beyond.
This CH-53K heavy lift helicopter joins the six in operation at Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
The CH-53K is the only sea-based, long range, heavy lift helicopter in production and will immediately provide three times the lift capability of its predecessor.

The Navy is looking to contract with a commercial dismantlement facility to dispose of the service’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier due to a heavy workload at the service’s yard Puget Sound.
Former USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was deactivated in 2012 and decommissioned in 2017.
It is currently stored at HII Newport News Shipbuilding.
According to a National Environmental Act Policy draft report, any shipyard would not start dismantlement until 2025.
The Navy listed several options for the dismantlement of the aircraft carrier but recommended one that allowed for a commercial yard to perform the work, according to the draft plan, first reported by The Kitsap Sun.
That option would cost $554 million to $696 million and take five years, compared to the other two alternatives that would last 15 years and cost $1.102 billion to $1.358 billion, according to the draft report.
The sea service also considered a no action alternative, which would see the Navy store Enterprise long-term.

The U.S. Navy’s plans for its future weapons have centered on one critical capability: range.
In a potential conflict in the Indo-Pacific region, ships and carrier-based aircraft would have to engage advanced enemy targets from long distances, especially since China continues to develop advanced long-distance missiles.
But that focus is not enough.
For the immediate future, the Navy says greater range is useless if a missile is slow because the speed of these weapons is becoming more important.
“We need to increase range, but we also need increased speed,” Cmdr. Garth Blakely, aviation weapons officer at the Office of Naval Operations, said on Sept. 10 during the annual Tailhook Association Symposium held outside Reno, Nevada.
“We may potentially need increased speed more than increased range at this point.”

Sailors could’t use the potable water system aboard aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) for three days after jet fuel contaminated the fresh water tanks last week, a Navy official told USNI News on Wednesday.
After discovering JP5 in the water while the carrier was at sea on Sept. 16, the potable water became safe to use again on Sept. 19 after flushing the system, Cmdr. Zach Harrell, a spokesman for Naval Air Forces, told USNI News.
“On September 16, 2022, aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) identified traces of jet propellant-5 (JP-5), used to fuel carrier-based aircraft, in the ship’s potable water supply while operating off the coast of southern California,” he said.

A Lockheed Martin helicopter whose mechanical issues had delayed it from becoming operational deployed to its first Marine Corps training exercise in the mountains of Idaho last month, the service said (*).
The CH-53K “King Stallion” helicopters can externally carry as much as 27,000 pounds for 110 nautical miles, making them three times as powerful as their predecessor, the CH-53E Super Stallion.
That means the King Stallion can transport light armored vehicles long distances from ships to positions inland.
The ability to carry heavy loads across long stretches of sea may prove an asset as the threat of China looms and the U.S. military turns its attention toward the islands of the Pacific.

Aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) will soon leave for a short cruise before heading out on its first deployment next year under the Defense Department’s global force management system.
The upcoming cruise will take the first-in-class Ford throughout the Atlantic Ocean and will include a foreign port call, Ford commanding office Capt. Paul Lanzilotta told reporters today.
“We’re going to sail on the high seas with our partners. We’re going to operate in concert with them. We want interoperability, we want interchangeability with our partners. So our NATO partners that are sailing with us, we’re going to work with them every day, every night. That’s what it means to operate on the high seas. We’re going to learn lessons with them. We’re going to build out the tactics that Ford-class brings to the table, kind of see where we’ve got, areas to improve,” Lanzilotta said.
“There’s always going to be areas to improve.”

After years of delays, the Navy’s first-in-class aircraft carrier is underway on a two-month operational stress test of the carrier’s new systems and air wing as the ship and its crew prepare for an extended deployment early next year.
USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) left Naval Station Norfolk, Va., on Oct. 4, 2022, will operate throughout the Atlantic, exercise with allies and partners, make a foreign port call and operationally employ the carrier air wing for the first time.
Ford, the first of its class, has a host of new technologies new to the fleet and will have about 60 aircraft aboard at any given time during the service-retained deployment. The ship is taking about 80 percent of a carrier air wing and embarking with every type of aircraft that operates from a carrier.

E. coli bacteria was found in the potable water aboard the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln last month, but Navy officials said Friday that they do not believe that was the cause of the ship’s drinking water becoming cloudy and smelly a few weeks ago.
“There have been no confirmed cases of illness related to the ship’s water, but the Abraham Lincoln medical department continues to closely monitor their Sailors for any potential symptoms,” the Navy said in a statement Friday.
Crew first noticed cloudy, odorous water on Sept. 21 as the ship operated off southern California, according to Naval Air Forces officials.
All potable water tanks were tested the following day, and E. coli was found in three of the carrier’s 26 potable water tanks, according to a Friday statement.
Those tanks were isolated and secured from the potable water system, and the ship provided bottled water to sailors.

The safety stand-down that has grounded the Navy’s fleet of T-45C Goshawk training jets happened after one of the trainers experienced “a low-pressure compressor blade failure” before takeoff on Oct. 11, officials have confirmed.
Officials said no prior Goshawk mishaps are being attributed to this type of engine blade fault, although a mishap from August remains under investigation.
The Navy initiated the safety stand-down on Oct. 14.

“The process of returning to operations is based off engineering analysis by NAVAIR, with the most important decision being the safety of our aviators,” Chief of Naval Air Training Rear Adm. Richard Brophy said in the release.
“The aircraft we are flying are verified and known-good. We have the highest confidence in the compliance of these aircraft.”

In ginocchio da te  ...
A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B stealth fighter today suffered damage after a nose-gear collapse at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, in Japan.
The short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) jet was under tow when the incident happened, having just returned to the base for a precautionary landing.
The jet is home-based at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Japan.
The incident occurred at around 1:40 PM, local time, after the F-35B had touched down and was being towed back to the flight line.
In a video, the jet is seen bumping up and down in an unusual way as it’s towed.
The nose gear oleo then gives way and the aircraft ends up sitting on its nose on the taxiway.
No injuries were reported to any of those involved and the jet was soon surrounded by firefighting and other emergency vehicles.

The Italian pilots and technicians have been training on US soil since 2018.
The Italian Ministry of Defense disclosed on Nov. 30, 2022 that a ceremony was held at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina, to celebrate the end of the agreement which allowed Italian Navy and US Marine Corps F-35B pilots and technicians to train together at the US base.
The agreement started in 2018 with the arrival of the first Italian F-35B at Beaufort and initially foresaw only an 18-month duration.
Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 helped support the Italian Navy F-35B pilots and maintainers and assisted in the development of their organic F-35B training program as the service prepares to replace the aging AV-8B+ Harrier II.

The next Ford-class aircraft carrier will now deliver to the Navy in 2025, one year later than the service’s most recent projection, according to Fiscal Year 2024 budget documents released this week.
The Navy delayed future carrier John F. Kennedy’s (CVN-79) delivery date from June 2024 so the service could alter the ship’s Post Shakedown Availability (PSA) and perform more work during construction, according to the service’s Fiscal Year 2024 budget documents.
“The Navy is implementing a strategy to pull baseline work from the Post Shakedown Availability (PSA) into the construction period in order to provide more capability at ship delivery,” the Navy’s shipbuilding budget books read.
The altered schedule will ensure Kennedy is ready to deploy to the Indo-Pacific, according to the service.

Lockheed Martin has opened a second production line to make two of the Pentagon’s most in-demand weapons: the "LRASM" anti-ship cruise missile and the "JASSM-ER" air-to-surface variant.
Wargames have shown the utility of the missiles in countering a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
The problem is that the simulations also show that the stocks of "AGM-158C LRASM" and "JASSM-ER" from which it is adapted would be quickly expended in a conflict, putting pressure on the services to boost their modest inventories.
“I think one of the most glaring gaps in our portfolio is anti-ship weapons, especially air-launched ones, and "LRASMs" are particularly important since it gives you the ability to attack from standoff,” Stacie Pettyjohn, director of the defense program at the Center for a New American Security, told Air & Space Forces Magazine.
“For several decades, we got out of the ship-killing business,” Pettyjohn added.
“You actually do have to invest resources in it.”

The Navy is still working through a timeline to meet a congressional mandate to add Standard Missile 6 and the Tomahawk Cruise Missiles to future Constellation-class guided-missile frigates, service officials told USNI News.
A requirement from the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act directed the Navy Secretary to add SM-6s and Tomahawks to the Connies starting with the second hull.
The frigates, based on the Italian and French navies’ FREMM frigate, are multi-mission, but will specialize in anti-submarine warfare.
The original design of the 7,300-ton frigate called for a 32-cell Mark 41 vertical launch system that would field the smaller Evolved Seasparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2 anti-air missile and the SM-2 Block IIICs.
In an explanatory statement accompanying the FY 2023 NDAA, Congress said it wants the integration of the Tomahawk to serve as a test bed for a virtualized system to control the Tomahawk and to experiment with the missile options for future unmanned surface vehicles.

The CH-53K King Stallion completed five full days and nights of envelope expansion testing at sea in the Atlantic last month.
The aircraft continued testing in a modern naval environment following initial successful sea trials in June, 2020.
A diverse team of 105 personnel from Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Two One (HX-21), H-53 Heavy Lift Helicopters Program Office (PMA-261), Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461 (HMH-461), Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron One (VMX-1), and Sikorsky pilots, engineers, technicians and maintainers successfully accomplished this second set of sea trials for the CH-53K.
Sea trial testing took place aboard the USS Arlington, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock (LPD24), operated by the U.S. Navy.
“The latest sea trials were another great success for the CH-53K program,” said Col. Kate Fleeger, PMA-261 program manager.
“Data analysis has shown a greater CH-53K LPD launch and recovery envelope than that of the CH-53E.”
