"Rocket Cargo" ... un programma che sa di fantascienza ...
The Air Force wants to soon be able to deliver cargo from space, and it is putting real money behind the effort.
The Department of the Air Force announced June 4 that the “Rocket Cargo” effort is its fourth “Vanguard” program, joining the Skyborg wingman drone, the Golden Horde weapon swarming initiative, and the Navigation Technology Satellite 3 as top priorities to move from science and technology development to real-world programs.
The Department of the Air Force requested $47.9 million for Rocket Cargo development in its 2022 budget.

... the Air Force Research Laboratory is leading studies to determine if using space launches to deliver material, and possibly personnel, across the globe within hours is viable.

"Exercise African Lion" ... questa notte il leone non dorme 🦁 ...

Immagine
Several U.S. Air Force aircraft including F-16s, C-130s, and KC-135s have deployed to northern Africa for the continent’s largest exercise, African Lion.
The exercise drew 7,000 participants from nine nations and wraps up June 18 with USAF aircraft flying alongside Moroccan aircraft for close air support training and C-130s airdropping personnel.
“The arrival of fighters and tankers adds another level to this already dynamic exercise,” said Gen. Jeffrey L. Harrigian, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa commander ...
“Every flight brings another opportunity to work closely with our partners and exchange best practices so we can better pursue our shared goals.”

Medio Oriente ... circolano voci di una prossima riduzione delle forze statunitensi presenti nell'area ...
The Pentagon is planning to draw down the number of fighter squadrons and missile defense systems deployed in the Middle East as the U.S. seeks to reduce its footprint in the region, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III informed Saudi Arabia that the U.S. intends to withdraw Terminal High Altitude Area Defense and Patriot missile defense systems along with some fighter aircraft deployed there.
The U.S. will also bring home fighters and missile defense systems from Iraq, Kuwait, and Jordan, the Journal reported.
Pentagon spokesman John F. Kirby would not confirm details, saying instead that the department regularly reviews capabilities and “the ability to sustain those capabilities and systems in whatever region they are deployed.”

Una segnalazione quanto mai tempestiva ... :onfire:
An F-15 pilot with the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom got to meet the civilian plane spotter who potentially saved his life.
In a Facebook post from RAF Lakenheath, 492nd Fighter Squadron pilot Maj. Grant Thompson was seen personally thanking Ian Simpson, a British aviation enthusiast.
Simpson happened to be watching planes take off at the base on July 13 when he noted that one F-15E Strike Eagle was seemingly spewing fire and sparks out of its right rear engine, but the pilot seemed unaware.
According to the BBC, Simpson said he called the base’s switch board and was connected with the 48th Fighter Wing field operations group.
From there, Thompson was alerted to the issue and was able to land safely without incident, according to the Facebook post.

Superlavoro per i reparti dotati dei C-130 "MAFFS" ... 🔥🔥🔥
High temperatures and drought across the West are sparking an almost unprecedented operations tempo for Air Force firefighting C-130s and aircrews.
C-130s from three Air National Guard wings and an Air Force Reserve wing are flying missions with the Modular Airborne Firefighting System, supporting the U.S. Forest Service.
Activated a month earlier this year than in 2020, they are flying at twice the pace as last year, fighting huge blazes including the Dixie Fire in Northern California.
“You can really see the impact,” said Col. Gary Monroe, commander of 1st Air Force (Air Forces Northern)’s 153rd Modular Airborne Firefighting System Air Expeditionary Group.
“The heat, the drought, and all the conditions out there are just very bad for sparking wildfires. … That’s why we’re here, to help with that, and to mitigate any damage or suffering that’s out there for our neighbors, our friends, our families, our citizens all around us.”

Prosegue il dispiegamento dei B-2 in Europa ... faranno una capatina anche in Italia?
A pair of U.S. Air Force B-2s integrated with Norwegian F-35s over the North Sea on Sept. 8, as part of a recent Bomber Task Force deployment.
The mission was “designed to test escort procedures, stand-off weapon employment, and the suppression and destruction of air defenses,” U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa said in a press release.
During the flight, the two different aircraft were able to link and use fifth-generation data sharing capabilities.
“The mission demonstrates the value of our continued presence and relationships,” said Gen. Jeffrey L. Harrigian, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa commander, in a statement.
“What our collective Airmen accomplish on these missions is vital to our alliance and maintaining agility as we move into the future.”

Danneggiato dopo un atterraggio di emergenza ... #-o
A B-2 bomber is lying damaged on the side of the runway at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., after a crash early Sep.14.
Air Force Global Strike Command is withholding information about the condition of the aircraft and the operational status of Whiteman’s sole runway, but no one was injured in the mishap.
The unidentified aircraft - most of the 20 B-2s are named for a state - “experienced an inflight malfunction during a routine training mission” at about 12:30 a.m. local time, an AFGSC spokeswoman said.
It was damaged on the runway “after an emergency landing,” she said.
There were no personnel injuries and no fire as a result of the accident, and no munitions were aboard the aircraft, she said.
Further details will be provided after an investigation.
Global Strike Command issued a notice to Airmen (NOTAM) shortly after the accident to keep at least six miles away from the base.
The initial notice said the airspace would be restricted through Sept. 17.
The reason for the NOTAM was given as “to provide a safe environment for accident investigation.”

Boeing propone un missile aria-aria a lungo raggio ...

Immagine
Boeing has shown off a new long-range air-to-air missile design at the Air Force Association's annual Air, Space, and Cyber Conference, which opened today.
The weapon, referred to as the Long-Range Air-to-Air Missile, or LRAAM, has a two-stage configuration with a "kill vehicle" attached to a booster section that falls away after it is burned out, something that has been seen in previous U.S. military air-to-air missile concepts.
A Boeing representative told The War Zone that the company had crafted the LRAAM design in response to a so-called Broad Area Announcement (BAA) from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) last year that asked companies to submit ideas to meet a host of advanced technologies desired for future long-range air-to-air missiles.
AFRL said design submissions could be based around single and multi-stage rocket motors, as well as air-breathing engines, such as ramjets.
However, it added that it was particularly interested in, among other things, throttleable “multi-pulse solid rocket motors” and novel “propellants, grain configurations, cases, and liners” that would be able to deliver greater speeds, as well as ranges, compared to existing weapons, such as the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM).

Il Generale Mark D. Kelly, capo dello Air Combat Command, sostiene la necessità della realizzazione di armi aria-aria di quinta generazione a maggior raggio di azione ...
The range of current Air Force weapons compels pilots of stealth aircraft to get too close to their targets, risking that they’ll be seen and shot down, Air Combat Command boss Gen. Mark D. Kelly said Sep. 22.
The service must have longer-range “fifth-generation weapons” to go with its fifth-gen combat aircraft, he said.
“We [take] a lot of bang out of our low-observable force because we push them into ranges where everyone” - even stealth aircraft - “is observable,” Kelly told reporters during a press roundtable at AFA’s Air, Space & Cyber conference.
That means “we’re not going to get a good return on our investment” in fifth-gen or better fighters.
Fifth-generation weapons “allow us more range, whether it’s new air-to-air or air-to-ground,” he said.
The Air Force considers its F-22, F-35, and B-2 bombers to be “fifth generation” systems.
“I’m happy if it moves fast,” he said, because “any time we pull the trigger … we have to assume the target’s going to move between the time [the weapon] leaves the rail and the time it shows up at the target. And hypersonics and closer range shorten that time of flight.”
But, “it’s not exclusively hypersonics. We just have to make sure we can reach out and touch folks at a range that is equal to or exceeds their ability to reach out and touch us.”
The longest-range dogfight weapon in USAF’s inventory is the AIM-120 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile, which Kelly noted goes back more than 25 years.

The 48th Fighter Wing has reactivated the first U.S. Air Forces in Europe F-35A squadron.
The 495th Fighter Squadron, nicknamed as the “Valkyries,” was activated at exactly 8:49 and 50 seconds, Friday morning, 30 years to the day since its designation as a fighter squadron.
The first F-35A is scheduled to arrive at RAF Lakenheath later this year.
The base was selected to host the first U.S. F-35A squadrons in Europe based on very close ties with the Royal Air Force, existing infrastructure, and combined training opportunities.
Additionally, the U.K. is a critical component in training and combat readiness for U. S. Air Forces in Europe due to its excellent airspace and F-35 program partnership.

Gli alti papaveri lanciano un avvertimento al Congresso ...
Billions of dollars are on the line if Congress cannot pass a defense appropriations bill in the coming month and instead decides to fund the Defense Department through a continuing resolution for the rest of fiscal 2022, service chiefs and top Pentagon officials warned a House panel Jan. 12.
A yearlong CR also would cost the military an even more precious resource - its efforts to modernize and counter China and Russia, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. told the House Appropriations defense subcommittee.
“As much as this affects the Air Force fiscally, the impact it has on our way to change is more shattering,” Brown said.
“Time is irrecoverable. And when you’re working to keep pace against well resourced and focused competitors, time matters.”

Tempo di bilanci, tagli e ... trasformazioni ...
The Department of the Air Force is requesting $234.1 billion in its 2023 budget request, of which $40.1 billion is “pass-through funds,” or money the services will never see, while $169.5 billion is for USAF and $24.5 billion is for the Space Force.
The budget request looks to cut 240 aircraft, including 33 fifth-generation F-22 stealth fighters and the majority of the AWACS fleet, to pay for additional research and development, long-delayed nuclear modernization programs, and the growing Space Force.
It also significantly reduces the F-35 buy.
The 2023 budget request represents a $12 billion increase over the $182 billion enacted by Congress in 2022 - one of the largest increases in years.
Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said the 2023 request attempts a “transformational” change in the services, motivated by China’s rapid modernization and taking into account Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Service leaders view the 2023 request as a prelude to even more profound “transformational” changes in fiscal 2024.

F-35 ... l'Air Force ne acquisterebbe un maggior numero se le risorse a disposizione lo permettessero ...
Budget compromises driven by the need to modernize two-thirds of the nuclear triad forced Air Force leaders to cut planned purchases of F-35s in 2023 to just 33 - 15 fewer than it bought in fiscal 2022 and 27 fewer than 2021, said Lt. Gen. David S. Nahom (*), the service’s deputy chief of staff for plans and programs.
The Air Force’s $169.5 billion budget plan, released March 28, opted to slow down F-35 purchases while accelerating acquisition of the F-15EX.
The necessity to pay for billions in nuclear modernization meant something had to give, and with upgrades pending to the F-35, the service reduced the F-35 buy in 2023 from 48 to 33 in favor of a purchase of 24 F-15EX aircraft.
Nahom said the tough choice was in part due to the required stealth to meet the current threat.
“Would we have bought more F-35s if we had more resources? Yes, absolutely,” Nahom told Air Force Magazine in a Pentagon interview.

Boeing sarà alla guida di un gruppo internazionale di industrie che studierà la migliore soluzione per la sostituzione degli E-3 AWACS della NATO destinati al ritiro nel giro di alcuni anni ...
An industry team led by Boeing will study how best to replace NATO’s E-3 AWACS system, which will retire in 13 years, under a contract awarded March 31 by NATO’s support and procurement agency.
Boeing is doing a similar study for the U.S. Air Force centered on the E-7 Wedgetail platform, which Air Force leaders recently hinted could be the replacement for retiring the Airborne Warning and Control Systems in the U.S. fleet.
NATO operates a fleet of 14 E-3s.
The contract covers a “risk reduction and feasibility study” of “future air surveillance command and control concepts,” Boeing said in a statement.
The company will “guide capability development efforts by … alliance members” ahead of the NATO AWACS retirement.
The contract was awarded to the ABILITI industry team, formed in 2019, which also includes Indra of Spain; Leonardo of Italy; Thales of France; ESG Elektroniksystem-und-Logistik-GmbH of Germany, and Mott MacDonald of the U.K.
The contract’s value was not disclosed, and it did not specify a particular solution.

"Stratofortress" e "Raptor" in missione in Medio Oriente ...
A USAF B-52 flew through the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility on March 29, integrating with American F-22s and aircraft from nine other countries over the Middle East, U.S. Air Forces Central Command announced April 2 (*).
The B-52 bomber, assigned to the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., flew over the East Mediterranean, Arabian Peninsula, and Red Sea after taking off from RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom, where it is deployed as part of a bomber task force mission.
The F-22s, from the 1st Fighter Wing at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., that joined the bomber have been in CENTCOM since February - a squadron deployed to the United Arab Emirates to respond to recent drone and missile strikes by Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels.
A KC-10 also joined the mission, refueling the B-52 over Saudi Arabia, according to images released by AFCENT.

Un missile aria-aria misterioso ...

Da AW&ST ...
The Weekly Debrief: More Details Emerge About New USAF Mystery Missile ...

By Steve Trimble - April 05, 2022

A single line item in a 101-page book of U.S. Defense Department funding requests for fiscal 2023 introduces a mysterious new air-to-air missile project for the Air Force.
The “Modular Advanced Missile” (MAM) program appears for the first time in the budget documents on line No. 31 of page 35 inside the Defense Department’s research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) programs book released March 28.
The more detailed budget justification books will not be available until mid-April, so the only official information released about the program in budget documents so far is the program’s intriguing name, program element number (“0603036F”) and proposed fiscal 2023 budget, $125,688,000.
“Modular Advanced Missile is an Air Force air-to-air prototyping effort,” the spokeswoman says.
The Air Force’s fighter fleet already operates the Raytheon AIM-9X and AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air (Amraam) missiles, and the service is developing the Lockheed Martin AIM-260 missile, but the Air Force’s reply confirms that the MAM concept falls into the same category.
The $125 million line item is not for a one-off study but probably a down payment on a multiyear demonstration effort.
“The Modular Advanced Missile program will lead to air-launched kinematic demonstrations from a USAF fighter aircraft,” the spokeswoman says.
The technology being demonstrated will also “enable capabilities across any weapon system,” she notes.
Aviation Week requested information about the top speed and maneuvering characteristics of the MAM, but the spokeswoman says they are not able to disclose that information yet due to security requirements.
As probably intended, the program’s name does not give much away.
A radar-guided missile, for example, comprises several modules, including sections for a nose cone and antenna, a guidance and fuzing system, warhead, propellent tank, rocket motor and exhaust nozzle.
A heat-seeking missile has an infrared seeker in the nose.
Thus, a missile is made of several sections that could be referred to as modules.
But these sections are generally not considered “modular,” if that term implies some degree of interchangeability.
A rocket motor for the AIM-260, for example, could not be swapped out for the motor of an AIM-120.
But perhaps the “modular” term in the program’s title refers to such interchangeability for a future air-to-air missile.
“My instinct is that the ‘modular’ keyword and the strictly air-to-air and fighter details . . . suggest an effort to develop a common front end which can be attached to various different modular rear/propulsion configurations,” says Justin Bronk, senior research fellow at the London-based Royal United Services Institute think tank.
“I’d guess the aim is to allow a common missile program to service both fighters with internal weapons bays and those with external carriage and the ability to haul out-size loads, to go alongside AIM-260 as a future Amraam successor.”
Interchangeability, however, it is not as simple as swapping a medium-range propellant module for a section capable of longer range.
“You’d also need to be able to play around with the navigation and control laws and perhaps also have a scalable front-end [seeker],” says Douglas Barrie, senior fellow for military aerospace at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
“I’d wonder if for a very-long-range engagement - with the likely target location error, etc. - you’d want a bigger terminal seeker basket, so possibly a more capable antenna.”
The Air Force regularly experiments with new missile technologies.
In 2018, for example, the Extended-Range Weapon (ERWn) entered the budgeting process with the goal of demonstrating an interceptor against an enemy’s long-range missiles during boost phase.
But the Air Force canceled the ERWn program a year later, saying the technology had proved infeasible.
Other missile projects have appeared briefly only to disappear from the public record with no explanation.
One example is the Long-Range Engagement Weapon (LREW), a two-stage missile that was depicted as launching from a Lockheed Martin F-22 in a 2017 briefing slide by a senior U.S. defense official.
The slide indicated that the LREW program was ready to transition into development after completing a two-year risk-reduction phase, but the LREW subsequently vanished from the public record.

The Air Force’s unfunded priorities list - things it wants but couldn’t squeeze into its fiscal 2023 budget request - would leave it to Congress to boost the F-35 fighter buy, as part of a list of things it would acquire if it had another $4.6 billion to spend.
The Air Force only asked Congress for 33 F-35s in its 2023 budget proposal, 15 fewer than it bought in 2022 and 27 fewer than 2021.
USAF said it prefers to spend that money on other needed modernization programs and wait until the Block 4 version of the jet is ready.
The unfunded priorities list looks to close that gap slightly, asking for $921 million for seven more strike fighters, bringing the service’s total 2023 buy to 40 F-35As - still eight fewer than what it bought in 2022.
The UPL, which was obtained by Air Force Magazine but not released by the department, lists eight priorities the service wants but couldn’t afford in its 2023 budget request, released last month.
The F-35 is fifth on that list.
“The Air Force unfunded list would add just seven F-35 jets, less than half of what’s needed to match the 48 requested in each of the past three years,” said Air & Space Forces Association president retired Lt. Gen. Bruce Wright.
“Indeed, in 2020 and 2021, Congress increased the Air Force request from 48 to 60 and we would urge lawmakers to do the same in 2023.”

Tutto tranquillo sul Fronte Settentrionale, ma ...
Russia hasn’t stepped up its mock bomber runs at the U.S./Canadian landmass during its invasion of Ukraine, but cyber penetrations are up, indicating some “preparation of … the battlefield” is underway, U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command commander Gen. Glen D. VanHerck reported.
He also discussed the “episodic” U.S. strategy in the Arctic and said it’s only a matter of time before North Korea builds enough intercontinental ballistic missiles that it could overwhelm current U.S. missile defenses (*).
“I have not witnessed anything towards the homeland that would be provocative,” said VanHerck April 25, referencing recent Russian military activity.

L'USAF ha deciso di sostituire, almeno per ora, una parte dei vecchi E-3 Sentry con alcuni E-7 Wedgetail ...
The Air Force will buy some Boeing E-7A Wedgetails to replace a portion of its aging E-3 Sentry fleet, the service announced after evaluating two prototypes.
The Air Force “has decided to replace a portion” of the E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) fleet with the E-7, the service said April 26, without disclosing how many it expects to procure.
In its fiscal 2023 budget request, the Air Force asked Congress to let it retire 15 of its 31 Sentry aircraft, but a service spokesperson said not to assume those aircraft will be replaced on a one-for-one basis.
“That will be determined after the evaluation,” she said.

A casa dopo l'uragano 🌪️ ...
Altus Air Force Base, Okla., evacuated 33 aircraft of the 97th Air Mobility Wing ahead of severe storms on May 3 and 4 and secured the remaining aircraft on base in hangars, but there was no damage and the full complement of aircraft had returned by May 5.
Due to operational security, the base could not say where its KC-135s, C-17s, and KC-46s were flown to, other than locations chosen “based on availability, proximity, and capability.”
Those not evacuated or secured were already away at other locations.
There was no damage and no injury at the base during the harsh weather.

La base aerea di Little Rock è stata selezionata per ospitare l'unità di addestramento formale per i C-130J dell'Air National Guard ...
As the Air National Guard moves forward with its plans to replace aging C-130Hs with new C-130Js, it has decided where it wants to base its formal training unit for the new aircraft - Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark.
The decision, announced by the Department of the Air Force on June 24, will result in four C-130Js being located at Little Rock to help Air Guard members “gain the experience and knowledge needed to operate the newer aircraft,” according to a DAF release (*).
The Air Force has conducted the site survey and environmental analysis necessary to make the final decision for Little Rock.
Arkansas lawmakers indicated in May 2021 that military leadership had selected Little Rock as its preferred location, with final approval coming from Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall.
