Air Force Secretary Barbara M. Barrett, USAF Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., and Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond have instructed commanders to review every visual symbol, turn of phrase, and other form “of unit recognition and identity” to make sure they’re in line with the Department of the Air Force’s effort to increase inclusion among its ranks.
“Commanders, at the squadron level and above, will remove any visual representation, symbols, or language derogatory to any race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, age, or disability status to ensure an inclusive and professional environment,” a Jan. 5 release from the department states.
These reviews must examine everything from unit nicknames and official sayings to emblems (both sanctioned and otherwise), including challenge coins and morale patches, and be completed “within 60 days from Dec. 23, 2020.”

Il quartier generale dello U.S. Space Command sarà trasferito a Huntsville ... storica località legata agli albori della corsa allo spazio ...
Alabama’s Redstone Arsenal is the preferred new home of U.S. Space Command, the Air Force said Jan. 13, signaling the Pentagon is on board with a major move from the longtime center of military space operations in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Redstone is a key Army installation in Huntsville, a defense-heavy area known as “Rocket City” for its involvement with NASA.
After the Air Force vetted several cities as prospective SPACECOM headquarters locations, it said the city scores highest on “factors related to mission, infrastructure capacity, community support, and costs to the Department of Defense,” the service said in a release (*).

Washington, 20 Gennaio 2021 ... il ruolo dell'Air Force nel giorno dell'insediamento del nuovo Presidente ...
The Air Force’s role in Joe Biden’s inauguration will look much different from past inaugurations, with a historic national airlift bringing in thousands of Guardsmen to protect the Capitol and surrounding areas and a ceremonial component that is much smaller than previous events because of the security situation in Washington, D.C., and the ongoing pandemic.
In the run-up to the 59th inauguration, the Air Force activated the 320th Air Expeditionary Wing as the USAF service component of the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region - the military effort that contributes to the overall inauguration security effort led by the U.S. Secret Service.
On Jan. 20, about 400 USAF personnel will support inaugural events, including flying VIPs, Honor Guards and bands, and communications and other support.
This is down from the 1,000 who participated in front of and behind the scenes in 2017.

Colorado’s congressional delegation is pushing President Joe Biden to review the Trump administration’s recent decision to move U.S. Space Command headquarters to Huntsville, Ala., in a Jan. 26 letter signed by all nine senators and representatives.
After searching for two years on behalf of the Defense Department, the Air Force said earlier this month that Huntsville is its top choice to host the HQ, based on factors like infrastructure, community, and costs.
Huntsville, home to the Army’s Redstone Arsenal, has only to pass an environmental review to finalize the decision.

Red Flag 21-1 è in corso ...
The 2021 iteration of the annual Red Flag combat air exercise at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., is focused on great power competition, two of the minds behind the event told Air Force Magazine on Jan. 29.
“In the past, what we have done is we’ve had a kind of nebulous enemy out there that we’ve fought—somebody that’s challenging, somebody that … provides those problem sets and tries to punish our mistakes,” 57th Wing Commander Brig. Gen. Michael R. Drowley said in an interview.
“But over the past few evolutions of Red Flag, we’ve really tried to take a National Defense Strategy approach, and tie the scenarios that we’re putting our participants through [to] real-world operations that they may see, either in Europe or the Pacific.
So that way, if the flag ever goes up, they are that much more prepared for combat.”
With 27 unique scenarios (a mixture of offensive and defensive situations) inspired by the 2018 National Defense Strategy, this year’s exercise kicked off on Jan. 25 and will run through Feb. 12.
About 2,400 people are taking part, and USAF aircraft representation includes the A-10, F-15E, F-16, F-22, F-35, B-1B, and B-2 ...

Un piano che torna in discussione ...
Plans to significantly reduce the U.S. footprint in Germany are now on hold as the new administration reviews the decision and its impacts, the head of U.S. European Command said Feb. 3.
In July, then-Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper and EUCOM boss Gen. Tod D. Wolters announced that DOD would remove nearly 12,000 troops from Germany, shift F-16s from Spangdahlem (the base’s only flying mission), and halt plans to move tankers and special operations forces from England to Germany, among other changes.
The announcement came after former President Donald J. Trump repeatedly stated his desire to reduce the U.S. footprint in Germany.
Wolters told reporters in a teleconference that planning for the moves immediately stopped once new Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III took charge. Wolters would not say how far along the changes were in planning.
“There were so many pieces and parts to the plan, we could probably sit here for weeks and guess on the depth and how far along we were,” Wolters said.

A proposito della sicurezza nelle basi dell'USAF ...
Acting Air Force Secretary John P. Roth and USAF Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. ordered the Air Force Inspector General to conduct a “comprehensive review of installation security and trends” following the Feb. 4 breach at Joint Base Andrews, Md., in which an unarmed civilian man made his way onto a C-40B aircraft before being apprehended, the department said in a statement.
“We are still gathering information and facts, but we can assure you, installation security is of critical importance to the Department of the Air Force,” according to the statement.
The review will cover Air and Space Force installations across the globe, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby noted during a Feb. 5 press briefing.
It is the second deep-dive into USAF base security practices since 2017.
The Air Force leaders have also ordered the IG to investigate the breach itself.

Missioni all'estero prolungate di un anno ...
Single Airmen and Guardians on their first duty assignments to 22 locations in the Pacific and Europe will now have to pack their bags for a longer stay—beginning next month, those tours will last three years instead of two.
The Department of the Air Force announced the policy change to a 36-month overseas posting for first-timers on Feb. 11.
Affected locations include: RAF Mildenhall, United Kingdom; RAF Lakenheath, U.K.; RAF Alconbury, U.K.; RAF Croughton, U.K.; London, RAF Menwith Hill, U.K.; RAF Fairford, U.K.; RAF Welford, U.K.; RAF Molesworth, U.K.; Aviano Air Base, Italy; Stavenger Air Base, Norway; Ramstein Air Base, Germany; Kaiserslautern, Germany; Sembach, Germany; Vogelweh, Germany; Landstuhl, Germany; Kapaun, Germany; Einsiedlerhof, Germany; Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; Kadena Air Base, Japan; Misawa Air Base, Japan; and Yokota Air Base, Japan.
Previously, troops would stay in those assignments for 24 months.
But Air Force officials said two years isn’t enough time to settle in.

Defense Department and congressional leaders on Feb. 12 announced eight appointees to the bipartisan commission tasked with renaming military bases that bear the monikers of Confederate leaders.
Congress, in the fiscal 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, called on the Pentagon to begin the process of removing homages to Confederate leaders, like Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Hood, Texas.
Lawmakers created the panel despite a disagreement on the issue with former President Donald J. Trump that threatened to derail the legislation altogether.

Un velivolo di generazione intermedia (“fourth-and-a half/fifth-gen minus”) nel futuro dell'USAF ...
Although he acknowledged that former Air Force acquisition chief Will Roper opened the possibility of buying more F-16s for this purpose, Brown waved away that idea.
The F-16, he said, lacks open mission systems capability, and gets operational flight program updates - new software - too infrequently.
The aircraft was designed in the 1970s, and he is more interested in a “clean sheet design,” which he referred to as a “fourth-and-a half/fifth-gen minus” aircraft.
The TacAir study will decide just what is needed, and in what numbers.
The study will parallel Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III’s Global Posture Review, and the two assessments will “inform” each other.

E' in preparazione un'importante esercitazione fra gli Stati Uniti ed alcuni paesi europei interessati alle zone artiche ...
Acting Air Force Secretary John P. Roth and the defense leaders of five other Arctic nations signed a letter of intent supporting one of the continent’s largest air exercises and outlining additional steps to expand collaboration.
The letter - signed by Roth and the defense ministers of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden - continues the Arctic Challenge Exercise, which was last held in 2019 and included more than 140 aircraft and 4,000 troops from nine countries.
The letter also expands on the Air Force’s first-ever Arctic Strategy, released last summer.
The strategy called for increased interoperability with key allies in the region, according to a Feb. 18 release.
“We have a common vision and shared set of values in upholding security and stability in the Arctic region,” Roth said in the release.
“Strong, enduring relationships with our allies and partners are essential to safeguarding peace in the region.”
The next iteration of the biennial exercise will be in June.

A proposito del ventilato trasferimento del quartier generale dello U.S. Space Command in Alabama ... potrebbero esservi, in futuro, nuove e differenti decisioni ...
The Department of Defense Office of Inspector General will review the Department of the Air Force’s decision to base U.S. Space Command headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., according to a Feb. 19 memo.
The choice of the Army’s Redstone Arsenal - green-lighted provided it passes an environmental review - has already raised objections.
Business groups and elected officeholders from Colorado released statements in January and February criticizing the selection, questioning why the process was stopped and then restarted, and claiming they had inside information that former President Donald J. Trump had personally intervened, slighting their state.
The review will gauge how well the Air Force “complied with DOD and Air Force policies during the location selection process; used objective and relevant scoring factors to rank the six candidate locations; and calculated costs and other scoring factors accurately and consistently,” wrote Assistant Inspector General Randolph R. Stone in the memo addressed to Acting Secretary John P. Roth.

The Bomber Task Force concept is a great success, Global Strike Command chief Gen. Timothy M. Ray said Feb. 25.
Bombers will go to new places in the coming months, and the annual pace of such deployments is likely to stay high, he told reporters at a press conference during Air Force Association’s virtual Aerospace Warfare Symposium.
The Air Force sent BTFs to India and Norway in recent weeks and will be “expanding beyond the normal” bomber deployment locations such as Fairford, U.K.; Diego Garcia; Moron, Spain; and Guam, Ray said.
A recent deployment of two B-1Bs to Prince Sultan AB, Saudi Arabia “was a very effective statement,” he observed, “about what we can do, broadly” around the world.

Tagli in vista ... e in arrivo, in un futuro più o meno prossimo, NGAD e MR-X ...
The Air Force will ask Congress to retire 421 legacy aircraft through 2026, replacing them with just 304 new fighters, according to fiscal 2022 budget talking points obtained by Air Force Magazine.
The savings derived from operating a smaller fleet will be put toward acquiring new systems such as the Next-Generation Air Dominance fighter later this decade, and a new Multi-Role fighter, called MR-X, in the 2030s.
The 421 aircraft include a total phase-out of the aged F-15C/D fleet, numbering about 234 aircraft, by the end of fiscal 2026.
The F-16 fleet would be reduced by 124 aircraft, mostly from what are called the “pre-block,” or oldest models, leaving a force of 812, also by the end of 2026.
The A-10 attack plane would be reduced from 281 total aircraft to 218, for a reduction of 63 tails, but on a more aggressive timeline ending in fiscal 2023.
Over the future years defense plan ending in fiscal ’26, the Air Force would also bring on 84 new F-15EX and 220 F-35A fighters, resulting in a net reduction of 117 jets over the five-year period.
The downsizing would be the largest since the “CAF Redux,” or Combat Air Forces Reduction of the early 2010s, in which USAF trimmed its fleet by about 250 airplanes.
Air Force leaders have been pushing for several years to be allowed to retire legacy systems in order to pay for new ones that will be more relevant to the future fight, particularly in the Indo-Pacific theater.
Service officials in recent days have said they plan to start phasing out the fifth-generation F-22 in 2030, to be replaced by the classified NGAD family of systems, known to be at least one manned fighter and potentially several unmanned variants.
Like the NGAD, the new MR-X would also be designed using new digital methodology to drastically reduce design, development and fielding timelines, while sharply reducing sustainment costs by baking in a short service life, with the expectation that successor aircraft will follow swiftly.

Onnipresenti (2^) ...
B-52 aircraft deployed to Europe flew over all NATO nations in a single day, the second time in less than a year that U.S. bombers have flown this show of strength over the continent and North America.
The B-52s, which are deployed to Moron Air Base, Spain, flew over all 30 allied nations on May 31, integrating with more than 20 allied militaries across two combatant commands as part of Operation Allied Sky ...
