Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson ... spettacolare “Moose Walk” ... :eeeek:
When rows and rows of aircraft, 35 in total, lined up for the largest display of airpower in recent years at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, they had two audiences in mind: the Airmen on the ground that made it happen, and most importantly, those who would see the photographs from abroad.
The May 5 “Moose Walk” included 26 F-22s, two C-12s, two C-130s, two E-3 Sentrys, and three C-17s, in addition to HH-60s and a C-17 already in the air.
It was a massive display of readiness by the 3rd and 176th Wings at the Alaska base.
Airmen worked in shifts leading up to the event, combining a full day’s worth of takeoffs and landings into one onslaught of aircraft.
“The message is that we’re ready. We’ve always been ready,” 3rd Wing Commander Col. Robert Davis told Air Force Magazine in an interview.

The sky above the North Sea in Europe filled with dozens of USAF aircraft on May 27 as fighters from multiple bases joined together in red vs. blue teams to prove that U.S. Air Forces in Europe crews are ready for a high-end fight, even as the COVID-19 pandemic forces the command to change its schedule.
Since the outbreak began, USAFE has canceled or suspended 14 exercises, leaving a shortage in its crews’ ability to train at a high level outside of their own local airspace.
The May 27 “large force employment” event is the culmination of about a month and a half of planning led by RAF Lakenheath, England, to “sharpen combat readiness” across fourth-generation fighter crews at three USAF bases, said Capt. Nathan Hartoin, the chief of weapons at the 48th Fighter Wing who planned the mission, in an interview with Air Force Magazine.
All told, 38 aircraft came together, including F-15Cs and F-15Es from Lakenheath; KC-135s from RAF Mildenhall, England; F-16s from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; F-16s from Aviano Air Base, Italy; a NATO E-3 AWACS; and the 603rd Air Operations Center at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, monitoring the action.
Planners and aircrews, because of travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines, met virtually to plan the training event and debrief.
Maintainers split into shifts and worked to get aircraft ready.

Coronavirus ... si sperimenta il calore ... :hothot:
The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has shown that common ground heaters could be used to raise the temperature of aircraft interiors to levels sufficient to kill the coronavirus and other biological contaminants.
In two tests conducted in May 2020, the interior of a Boeing C-17 cargo aircraft was sealed using materials common to military installations and was heated to 10°C (50°F) above ambient temperatures over a six-hour period, says the AFRL on 9 June (*).
The heaters used in the experiment are found at all military bases, and are commonly used by maintenance crews to keep warm or to heat equipment.

The US Air Force (USAF) has successfully linked simulators for the Lockheed Martin F-35, F-22, F-16 fighters, as well as the Boeing E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control system, in a virtual combat training event.
Pilots flew in “a highly contested simulated environment” during final acceptance test of the Distributed Mission Training system at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, says Lockheed Martin on 1 July (*).
The Distributed Mission Training system was developed by Lockheed Martin in partnership with the F-35 Joint Program Office and the USAF.
In the future, the training network ought to be able to connect to other aircraft simulators, including those for the Boeing F-15 fighter, says Lockheed Martin.

The Air Force’s two simultaneous Red Flag training events are set to wrap up this week, with the F-35 participating for the first time in the Alaska version.
Red Flag at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., and Red Flag-Alaska at Eielson Air Force Base are ending Aug. 14, following about two weeks of intense flying at each location’s training ranges.
Both events began in late July and early August, as organizers worked to counter the spread of COVID-19 while still bringing together flying units from across the Air Force for high-level training.

Non ci sono solo le "Red Flag ...
Bomb builders at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, this week are testing weapons for F-35As, B-1s, and MQ-9s as part of an in-depth combat evaluation exercise looking at the effectiveness of the bombs released from multiple aircraft.
The 86th Fighter Weapons Squadron, the military’s sole group tasked with testing the effectiveness of precision weapons, conducts the regular Combat Hammer evaluation at the Utah Test and Training Range.
This year’s event includes F-35s from both Hill and Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., along with B-1s from Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., and MQ-9s from Creech Air Force Base, Nev.
“During Combat Hammer, we are tasked to evaluate the reliability, maintainability, suitability, accuracy, and readiness of combat weapons systems against realistic threats and targets,” said Master Sgt. George Bermudez, superintendent of WESP at the 86 FWS ...

La stagione degli uragani ...
Air Force bases along the Gulf of Mexico are preparing for twin tropical storm systems that are expected to make landfall as hurricanes within the next several days.
Tropical Storm Laura, as well as a tropical depression likely to strengthen into Tropical Storm Marco, could grow into a rare case of two tropical cyclones to barrel through the Gulf of Mexico at the same time, according to the National Weather Service.
They are slated to strike Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Puerto Rico during the week of Aug. 23.
Wind and water could smack communities in the Florida Panhandle that have barely started rebuilding from other recent storms.
Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., was decimated by Category 5 Hurricane Michael in 2018 and is now staring down new potential threats.

USAF ... un preoccupato CSM Brown lancia l'allarme ...
The Air Force has a window of opportunity to change and it must do so quickly, because “our advantage as a nation, as an Air Force, as a joint team, is eroding,” Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. said Aug. 29, noting the service this week will release a paper called, “Accelerate Change or Lose.”
The Air Force has been engaged in conflict—mainly in the Middle East - for the last 30 years, he explained, while “at the same time, our adversaries, … China and Russia, have done things to accelerate and or move to impact our advantage. And so, our advantage is eroding, so that’s why I say accelerate change or lose,” Brown said during a speech at the virtual National Guard Association of the United States conference.
The potential consequences of not adapting are dire, Brown said: “Look at losing a great power competition. Look at losing a high-end fight. Look at losing quality Airmen, losing our credibility. And, unfortunately, I’m also thinking about how we might lose aspects of our national security.”

The Air Force, under the direction of its new top uniformed leader, risks losing its superiority and a future conflict if change does not begin immediately, from how the service buys and evaluates weapons to how it trains and deploys Airmen, Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. writes in his first directive to the service.
In an eight-page “strategic approach” memorandum to the force, titled “Accelerate Change or Lose,” Brown issues stern warnings on the ramifications of not taking threats seriously, and the importance of the Air Force clearly making its case to the country at large, saying failure is a realistic consequence.

Prove di guerra futura ...
More than 1,600 personnel, 60 companies, over a dozen aircraft, and dozens of radars and sensors came together for a massive Air Force-led event that utilized everything from boots on the ground to satellites in space to test how the service expects to fight a war in the future.
The event culminated when a cruise missile was downed by a “smart” bullet.
The Air Force’s second “Advanced Battle Management System onramp,” long delayed because of COVID-19, took place on Sept. 3, largely within four national training ranges, as well as a part operations center, part fusion cell at Joint Base Andrews, Md.
The new cloud-based, artificial intelligence-fueled command center brought together new and legacy ways of fighting wars into the service’s push for joint all-domain command and control.

For nearly 80 years, experimental X-planes have been the marker of cutting-edge aerospace technology.
Now, the digital age is ushering in a new kind of aircraft: the e-series.
The Air Force and Space Force will begin adding “e” to the names of aircraft, weapons, and satellites that are designed and tested using digital engineering, Air Force Secretary Barbara M. Barrett said Sept. 14 at the Air Force Association’s virtual Air, Space & Cyber Conference.
“For 73 years, the entire history of the Air Force, X-planes have represented technological innovation,” Barrett said.
“Today, the e-plane and e-sat will join them in making history and ensuring Airmen and space professionals have modern tools to protect our nation.”

The head of U.S. Air Forces in Europe is “convinced” the command will base F-35As at RAF Lakenheath, U.K., on time in late 2021, despite some delays to military construction and a possible slowdown in F-35 deliveries because of COVID-19.
“I am clear eyed that we’ve got a fair amount of work to do from the infrastructure needed to get the facilities ready, and at the same time work through the natural challenges of any bed down that has to do with the appropriate connectivity, security clearances, and those types of activities required to get an airplane in,” USAFE boss Gen. Jeffrey L. Harrigian told reporters during a panel at AFA’s virtual Air, Space & Cyber Conference on Sept. 14.
“But, we’re looking at the end of ’21 as the target remains on track for us to get the airplanes here.”
The original plan was to have the aircraft begin arriving this year, but that slipped to 2021.
Now construction delays have threatened that timeline, with projects about 25 percent over the $480 million budget ...

Airmen from Aviano Air Base, Italy, and Ramstein Air Base, Germany, will train with their counterparts from Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania as part of exercise Thracian Viper 20, the 31st Fighter Wing said Sept. 18.
The exercise, which is being held Sept. 18-25 at Graf Ignatievo Air Base, Bulgaria, looks to boost participating air forces’ “operational capacity, capability, and interoperability” with its host country, a wing release stated.
“During the exercise, U.S. and Bulgarian air forces will conduct training, enhancing our ability to rapidly deploy to remote locations and take command and control of the region,” U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa wrote in a release.

For Aviano Air Base’s 555th Fighter Squadron, Thracian Viper 20 is about more than just training.
The multilateral exercise, to which the squadron sent Airmen and six F-16s, boosts “operational capacity and capability,” as well as interoperability with Bulgaria, Maj. Rohan Naldrett-Jays, the squadron’s chief of standardizations and evaluation, told Air Force Magazine.
But, it also helps the Italy-based squadron fine-tune its ability to deploy aircraft and manpower anywhere in the European theater with agility - a critical part of Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr.’s “accelerate change, or lose” directive for the Total Force.

"Exercise Wolff Pack" ... aerocisterne KC-135 dell' USAF in appoggio alle forze aeree degli alleati europei ...
KC-135 Stratotankers from the 100th Air Refueling Wing at RAF Mildenhall, U.K., practiced supporting other aircraft in “Exercise Wolff Pack,” a multinational event over Europe that ended Oct. 1.
The three-day effort vetted the wing’s ability to deploy its aircraft to multiple places across Europe “in order to protect and defend partners, allies, and U.S. interests at a moment’s notice” and sharpen the agile combat employment (ACE) construct, wing spokesperson Capt. Shelley A. Spreier told Air Force Magazine in a Sept. 30 email.
ACE is the Air Force’s effort to move troops and planes around the globe quickly and with less reliance on brick-and-mortar installations, to be more responsive and resilient if bases are threatened.

Pure i Joint Chiefs ... ed altri ... #-o
Seven members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, including chairman Gen. Mark Milley and vicechair Gen. John Hyten, plus two other senior U.S. military commanders are in quarantine after coming in contact with a Coast Guard flag officer who tested positive for COIVD-19, USNI News has learned.
The military leaders all had meetings last week in the Pentagon with Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Charles Ray. Ray tested positive for the virus on Monday after symptoms over the weekend, a senior defense department official told USNI News.

Edwards AFB ... dopo 11 anni l'Air Force organizza un Airshow molto "sui generis" ...
Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., had scheduled its first on-base air show in 11 years to take place in October 2020.
Then the coronavirus pandemic intervened.
COVID-19 has forced Airmen across the country to get creative in hosting air shows, as everything from concerts to medical appointments moves online to avoid gathering crowds.
The 412th Test Wing at Edwards is no different.
In response to this year’s unique challenges, Edwards this week is hosting the Aerospace Valley Hybrid Air Show, wing spokesman and air show executive director Ed Buclatin said in an email.

Some will feel like a slight tingling sensation.
Others will feel nothing at all.
The electrode placed inside the ear canal isn’t designed to shock.
Rather, the US Air Force Research Laboratory (ARFL) believes the earbud-like device, when placed next to the brain’s vagas nerve, will have more of an intellectually stimulating effect.
It ought to create moments of super learning, controllable periods of focus that allow pilots to soak up their flight training faster than humanly possible.
In August, the AFRL’s 711th Human Performance Wing launched its Individualized Neural Learning System (iNeuraLS) project, an effort to speed up pilot training through brain stimulation.
The US Air Force (USAF) has been dogged for years by a pilot shortage and hopes the technology can help it quickly refill its ranks.

Lt. Col. Jared “Vic” Santos ... 1000 ore di volo su F-35A ...
Lt. Col. Jared “Vic” Santos, 388th Fighter Wing special projects manager, recently became the first USAF Airman to accrue 1,000 flying hours in the F-35A Lightning II fighter jet, the wing announced.
Santos hit the milestone during an approximately two-hour, “four-on-six tactical intercept” training sortie Oct. 22 over the Utah Test and Training Range, according to a release.
Wing Commander Col. Steven Behmer heralded the moment as a victory for Santos, his wing, and the service at large.
A relatively short time ago, the Air Force was standing this program up,” Behmer said in the release (*).
Now we’ve got our first 1,000-hour-pilot. Pilots like Vic are able to pass that experience on to younger pilots in the F-35 community. They are really going to get the best out of this jet, which is already very capable, and continuing to improve.”
