The UK's Reaction Engines has started a new test campaign to greatly expand the envelope on its high-mach propulsion technology, hoping to prove it can upgrade current jet engines to be capable of working from takeoff speeds up to Mach 4 and beyond.
The new tests are being done in conjunction with the US Department of Defense and Air Force Research Laboratory, as part of a Foreign Comparative Testing program that the US military uses to identify high-TRL (Technology Readiness Level) technologies that could "rapidly and economically satisfy current and emerging requirements."
The technology in question is the groundbreaking precooler that forms a key part of Reaction's vaunted SABRE, or Synergetic Air Breathing Rocket Engine.
The SABRE engine, still under development, is a jet/rocket hybrid that promises to operate as a super-fast jet for hypersonic flight at speeds up to Mach 5 in the atmosphere, and then engage its rockets to accelerate up to Mach 25 "for space access."

The Air Force successfully tested its redesigned Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) Form, Fit, Function Refresh (F3R), firing the AIM-120D3 missile June 30 from an F-15E Strike Eagle at a target over the Gulf of Mexico near the Florida coast.
The first of five live-fire tests, it assessed a full hardware system redesign of early 2000s technology components in the Raytheon missile.
“The core objective of this test was to execute a long range shot that physically stressed the new missile hardware,” Maj. Heath Honaker, the 28th Test and Evaluation Squadron’s director of engineering and advanced programs, said in a statement provided to Air Force Magazine.
“Successful execution proves the redesigned hardware and software are progressing as expected and puts us one step closer to fielding a reliable, sustainable air-to-air capability to the warfighter,” Honaker added.

After three months in Europe, Airmen from the Vermont Air National Guard and their F-35s returned home in early August, completing the first overseas deployment of the Guard’s first F-35 unit.
Eight F-35 fighters and more than 200 Airmen first deployed in late April and early May and operated out of Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.
Their presence in the region was needed to relieve F-35s from the 34th Fighter Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, that had arrived in Europe in February in response to Russia’s increasing aggression toward Ukraine and NATO’s eastern flank.

Afghanistan 30 Agosto 2021 ... è già passato un anno ...
Aug. 30 marks the one-year anniversary of the end of Operation Allies Refuge (OAR), the final act in the longest war in U.S. history.
Historians will long study the United States’ post-9/11 Global War on Terrorism and, in particular, the failed, two-decade effort to plant sustainable seeds of democracy in Afghanistan.
Certainly as a coda to the conflict, OAR reflected the chaos, tragedy, and good-intentions-gone-awry that characterized so much of the Afghan War.
What was accomplished a year ago under the most challenging of conditions and pressures was largely overshadowed by a horrific suicide bombing that killed more than 170 people at Hamid Karzai International Airport, including 13 U.S. service members; an errant U.S. drone strike that killed 10 Afghan civilians, including seven children; and by the dispiriting spectacle of flag-waving Taliban extremists sweeping to victory in Afghanistan 20 years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
On this one-year anniversary, however, the fog of war that enshrouded so much of Operation Allies Refuge has largely lifted.

Missili AMRAAM per tutti ...
Raytheon Missiles and Defense won a $972 million contract to supply U.S. and other militaries with Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAMs.
Under the non-competitive, firm-fixed-price incentive modification to a previously-awarded contract (*), Raytheon will produce AMRAAMs for both the Air Force and Navy, as well as the militaries of 19 other countries including the U.K., Australia, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Japan.
Foreign military sales account for 42% of the contract’s value, the Pentagon said Tuesday.
Raytheon said this contract, for lot 36, is the first to consist entirely of AIM-120D3 and AIM-120C8 AMRAAMs with the latest form, fit, function refresh, or F3R, upgrades to software and hardware.

Throughout its 75-year history, the U.S. Air Force has evolved how it employs airpower through decades of technological advancement, though its core missions have largely stayed the same.
Going forward, these are likely to remain as currently defined: providing air and space superiority; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR); rapid global mobility; global strike; and command and control.
However, the service is planning for broad changes in how each is addressed, at a time when key technologies have evolved to where they may be deployed sooner than many think.
At the Air Force Futures office at the Pentagon, this planning is based on extensive wargaming, analysis in cooperation with industry and joint planning with other services.
The head of the office, Lt. Gen. Clint Hinote, deputy chief of staff for strategy, integration and requirements, points to two key areas as examples of where the service is headed: increased autonomy and the further migration of missions, and weapons, to space.

"E' tempo di investire nella prossima generazione di aviocisterne e velivoli da trasporto" ... lo afferma il generale Jacqueline D. Van Ovost, capo dell'U.S. Transportation Command ...
The Air Force needs to start investing in its “next generation of strategic mobility and refueling assets,” U.S. Transportation Command boss Gen. Jacqueline D. Van Ovost said Sept. 20 - and that means replacing the two pillars of those respective fleets.
“The C-17 has demonstrated its merits countless times, but the last one was delivered to the Air Force in 2013,” Van Ovost told reporters at AFA’s Air, Space & Cyber conference.
“When we receive the last KC-46 at the end of this decade, we will still have hundreds of Eisenhower-era KC-135s in our fleet that must be recapitalized.”

Non-mission essential personnel have been ordered to evacuate MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., by noon of Sept. 27, and aircraft are being flown out of the base as Hurricane Ian gathers strength and threatens to hit Florida later this week.
Elsewhere on Florida’s Gulf coast, officials at Eglin Air Force Base plan to evacuate fighter and trainer aircraft on Sept. 27, and other USAF bases in the region remain on heightened alert in advance of the storm’s arrival.
MacDill, located in the Tampa Bay region, hosts the headquarters of U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, as well as KC-135s as part of the 6th Aerial Refueling Wing, and U.S. Army UH-60s.
Most of those aircraft are being evacuated, an Air Force spokeswoman told Air & Space Forces Magazine.
The KC-135 aircraft that are leaving are going to either Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., or Bangor Air National Guard Base, Maine.
“Our fleet of KC-135s Stratotankers are a strategic national asset. We will continue to protect them and the service members who ensure their success,” Col. Adam D. Bingham (*), commander of the 6th ARW, said in a statement.

Un "Elephant Walk" anche per i B-2 ...
Eight of the Air Force’s 20 B-2s assembled on one runway at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., on Nov. 7, for an extremely rare “elephant walk” of the service’s stealth bomber.
The gathering of B-2s from the 509th Bomb Wing, along with the Air National Guard’s 131st Bomb Wing, capped Exercise Spirit Vigilance, one of a series of “Vigilance” exercises that bomb wings across the Air Force perform throughout the year.
“Elephant walks” involve aircraft taxiing in a close formation before rapidly taking off in a show of air power.
“Exercise Spirit Vigilance is a routine exercise that serves to develop and challenge the skills of the 509th Bomb Wing and ensure our combat mission readiness,” a 509th BW spokesperson told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

"Red Flag 23-1" ... la presenza dei B-2 sarà soltanto virtuale ...
According to information provided to the media, the stealth strategic bomber from the 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., was originally scheduled to participate in the latest iteration of Red Flag, the Air Force’s principal combat training exercise, in January and February.
However, more than a month after a crash in December, the planes are still deemed unfit to fly, barring extraordinary circumstances.
“The safety stand-down is still in effect,“ Master Sgt. Beth Del Veccino, a spokesperson for the 509th Bomb Wing told Air & Space Forces Magazine on Feb. 3.
“We do not have new information regarding the status of the B-2 fleet; however, we remain ready to execute any tasking as directed by the commander-in-chief or other higher authority.“
Since the B-2 cannot fly unless absolutely necessary, the Air Force brought the plane’s crews to Nellis Air Force Base and virtually simulated the aircraft in Red Flag 23-1, which is occurring over three test ranges and the Pacific Ocean.
B-2 aircraft participated in Red Flag in 2022, 2021, and in other previous iterations of the exercise.

Lo "Air Mobility Command" vola in incognito ... o quasi ...
For decades, airlift and tanker aircraft of the U.S. military have flown with a proud “U.S. AIR FORCE” painted on the side of the fuselage, along with markings indicating home units, tail numbers and oftentimes a tail flash showing the unit’s heritage.
But that is no more for much of Air Mobility Command (AMC).
AMC recently directed a change to its fleet, removing the large “U.S. AIR FORCE,” unit markings, tail numbers and other identifying markings.
Recent photographs of KC-135s and C-130s operating show just a small U.S. flag on the tail and a light gray Air Force roundel.
AMC says the change was directed for operational security.

For the first time, F-22s have deployed to the U.S. territory of Tinian, a small island around 100 miles north of the American military hub of Guam.
The rotation of Raptors, which began March 1, is part of an exercise dubbed Agile Reaper 23-1.
Over time, the Department of Defense plans to turn Tinian into a permanent alternative location for aircraft operating out of Guam.
Over the first week of March, the Air Force will conduct flight operations from Tinian with F-22s from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER)’s 525th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron of 3rd Air Expedtionary Wing.
The unit deployed to Kadena Air Base, Japan, in late 2022 to replace aging F-15 Eagle fighters.
“For them to come support this exercise shows how agile we truly are,” Col. Kevin “Jinx” Jamieson, the commander of the 3rd Expeditionary Air Wing, told Air & Space Forces Magazine in an email.
Wargames have shown U.S. air bases in Japan and Guam would likely be targets should the U.S. be drawn into a conflict with China.
Service officials believe the U.S. needs more airfields in the Indo-Pacific to counter the threat of Chinese cruise and ballistic missiles and have introduced the concept of Agile Combat Employment, known as ACE, to meet the threat.

The U.S. Air Force took an important first step March 13 when F-22 Raptors deployed to Clark Air Base, marking the first time U.S. fifth-generation fighters have ever deployed to the Philippines, the USAF announced.
“This was the first time that F-22s, or any 5th-generation aircraft, have landed on and operated out of the Philippines,” Capt. Karl Schroeder, a Raptor pilot assigned to the 525th Fighter Squadron, said in an Air Force news release.
“This milestone with a regional ally aids in providing stability and security to the Indo-Pacific.”
The F-22 deployment, which took place on March 13 and 14, comes as the U.S. is undertaking a major effort to strengthen and expand its posture in the Pacific to deter China’s growing military might.

More than a dozen E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control, or AWACS, aircraft lined up on the runways at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., on March 21.
The crews of the distinctive E-3, with rotating radar domes perched above the fuselage, were practicing one of their more perilous missions: "The Weather Flush".
The weather flush gives aircrews, support squadrons, and maintainers a chance to practice generating the E-3G Sentry to evacuate the area quickly in the event of a weather emergency,” a Tinker Air Force Base release (*) said of the exercise.
Before severe weather hits, Air Force bases across the U.S. often fly their planes of harm’s way.
Usually, evacuations occur because of a hurricane or a similar large, predictable weather event.
Some bases, however, are subject to unpredictable weather and have aircraft that cannot easily be replaced - Tinker Air Force Base is in the heart of tornado alley in central Oklahoma and houses most of the Air Force’s AWACS fleet.

More than 20 tankers lined the runway at McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., on March 27 for the base’s largest mass launch of aircraft ever.
“The premise was essentially a threat was inbound,” Col. George N. “Nate” Vogel, commander of the 22nd Air Refueling Wing, told Air & Space Forces Magazine.
“That was the scenario we gave ourselves, and we had limited amount of time to get folks off the ground. So the team generated those jets over the course of about 48 hours, the maintainers did, simulating that we had indicators and warnings that situations in the world were kind of ramping up from a crisis standpoint. And so then we did a crew brief at 7 a.m. for all the crews, they stepped out to the aircraft and then the first thing we did was we just wanted to get a picture of of all the aircraft generated, and then we did the formation launch immediately after that.”
Sixteen KC-46s and five KC-135s participated in the flush, with aircraft and Airmen from the 22nd Air Refueling Wing and the 931st Air Refueling Wing participating.
The launch was part of the base’s "Exercise Lethal Pride" (*), a weeklong effort to simulate the Air Force’s plan for dispersing aircraft and crews to operate from smaller bases.

Developmental flight tests are underway for the Air Force’s new Next Generation Fixed Wing Helmet at Eglin Air Force Base.
The Air Force’s Next Generation Fixed Wing Helmet sits ready for testing at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.
The 46th Test Squadron engineers have begun developmental testing on NGFWH with F-22 pilots while the aircraft are stationed at Eglin AFB.
These tests mark the second round of developmental testing since the Air Force announced the new LIFT-manufactured helmet in 2022.
Engineers with the 46th Test Squadron and the 28th Test and Evaluation Squadron oversee the helmet testing.
Approximately five F-22A Raptor pilots from the 301st Fighter Squadron, a Reserve unit with the 43rd Fighter Squadron at Eglin AFB, fly with the new lighter, cooler and more readily-equipped helmet.
The NGFWH program goal is to provide pilots a more comfortable, stable and balanced platform to accommodate helmet-mounted devices usage without imposing neck strain and discomfort to the user.

The aging E-3 AWACS fleet got a little smaller last week, as the first of 13 E-3s tp be retired this year took off from Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., for the last time.
E-3 Tail Number 0560 departed for the Boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., on April 6, a week after the 552nd Air Control Wing hosted a retirement celebration with retired and Active-Duty Airmen getting a chance to sign their names to the airframe, an Air Force tradition.
“It’s sad. It means a new way is coming, but it’s still sad because we have a lot of great memories,” a former Airman told local television station KOLO.
“We had a great mission back 20, 25 years ago.”
With the retirement, the Air Force’s AWACS fleet shrunk to 30 aircraft, on its way to under 18.
Based on the commercially defunct 707 airframe, E-3s are expensive to maintain, their mission-capable rates plunging below 65 percent in recent years.

The northernmost U.S. military base in the world has a new name, and it’s even harder to pronounce than the old one: Thule Air Base was renamed Pituffik Space Base on April 6.
Pronounced “Bee-doo-FEEK,” the new moniker reflects the Inuit native people’s name for the settlement where the Greenland base was built and recognizes the base’s primary role in support of space missions.
Located nearly 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Pituffik has been home to U.S. Air Force personnel since the early 1950s, where its strategic location makes it vital to missile defense and space domain awareness.
Pituffik hosts the 12th Space Warning Squadron and its Upgraded Early Warning Radar, and Detachment 1 of the 23rd Space Operations Squadron, which does telemetry, tracking, and controls dozens of satellites.
Pituffik’s original Inuit residents were forcibly relocated in 1953, a history that remains controversial in Greenland to this day.
The base’s former name, Thule, came from explorer Knud Rasmussen early in the 20th century, a reference to Greek and Roman maps that cited a mysterious northern island called “ultima Thule” - named for an ancient Greek explorer who sailed far north and landed on an island whose name he heard as “Thule.”

The NATO Allied Air Command confirmed on April 12, 2023, that F-22 Raptors arrived at Powidz Air Base in Poland for a new scheduled aircraft rotation along NATO’s Eastern Flank.
This is the second time the F-22s deploy to Europe in less than a year, following the latest deployment from August to December 2022 at Łask Air Base, Poland.
The Raptors are assigned to the 94th Fighter Squadron from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, and replace the F-15E Strike Eagle detachment of the 48th Fighter Wing from RAF Lakenheath which was deployed at Łask Air Base since November.
The Raptor detachment was expected to begin operations on April 6, however the fighters arrived in Europe later than expected.

The Air Force announced locations for two new F-15EX squadrons and a new F-35 unit on April 18, all within the Air National Guard.
The preferred location for the new F-35A squadron is Barnes Air National Guard Base, Mass., while the F-15EXs are slated for Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, La., and Fresno Air National Guard Base, Calif.
All three bases currently operate older F-15C/D model fighters which the Air Force wants to retire in the coming years.
At Barnes, the 104th Fighter Wing would gain 18 new F-35s.
At NAS Joint Reserve Base New Orleans and Fresno, the 159th Fighter Wing and the 144th Fighter Wing would each get 18 F-15EXs.

The latest version of the AIM-120 AMRAAM, the Air Force’s primary air-to-air weapon, has been cleared for fleet deployment later this year, according to Raytheon, the missile’s builder.
The Air Force is planning a multiyear procurement of the missile to bridge the gap until its successor, the highly classified AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile, is in production at scale, according to service leaders and fiscal 2024 budget request documents.
The AIM-120D-3 has completed the Air Force’s “Functional Configuration Audit” and is “on track toward fielding by both the Air Force and Navy this year,” Raytheon said ...
The upgrade program that keeps the AMRAAM capable of dealing with advanced threats is known as the Form, Fit, Function Refresh, or F3R.

A second Air National Guard unit has its first F-35s, as three of the fifth-generation fighters arrived at Truax Field, Wisc., on April 25.
The Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 115th Fighter Wing has been working toward the F-35 for years now - Truax Field was selected as one of two preferred locations for the fighter back in 2017, and an official basing decision came three years later in April 2020.
The wing’s final F-16 left the base in October 2022.
