DARPA is going to keep working on its Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) missile, even though the program for which it’s meant to be a technology pathfinder is already in source selection.
A HAWC demonstrator flew successfully this month.
The new program is known as MoHAWC, but DARPA was not able to immediately explain the new acronym.
An agency spokesperson referred to a line item in the fiscal 2023 budget request for continued Air Force/DARPA funding of $60 million for MoHAWC.
The next phase of the program would “develop, integrate, and demonstrate technologies to increase effectiveness and producibility of an air-launched hypersonic cruise missile,” according to the budget request.
HAWC is a joint effort of the Air Force and DARPA.

A Mississippi shipyard is set to install the first long range hypersonic weapons on a U.S. warship in an upcoming repair period, USNI News has learned.
According to a Friday pre-solicitation notice from Naval Sea Systems Command, the Navy has selected Ingalls Shipbuilding for a dry-dock period for guided-missile destroyers USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) USS Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001).
“The modernization scope of the effort will require specialized yard cranes for greater lift capacity, dry-dock facilities, covered assembly areas, and dedicated fabrication shops,” reads the notice.
“Use of an alternative source, other than HII, would result in unacceptable ship and program schedule delays and would produce adverse impacts to the DDG 1000/1001 operational requirements.”
While the notice didn’t give dates for the availability, Capt. Matthew Schroeder, DDG-1000 program manager with Program Executive Office, Ships, told USNI News in March that the repair period to upgrade Zumwalt with hypersonic weapons was scheduled to start in October 2023.
Earlier this year, USNI News reported the Navy would remove the two 155mm Advanced Gun System mounts aboard each ship to install tubes that would accommodate the Vertical Launch System for the Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB) developed for the Army, Air Force and the Navy.
A source familiar with the availability told USNI News the period outlined in the Friday notice would include removing the AGS mounts.

The Air Force awarded a $334 million contract to Leidos for Project “Mayhem,” the secretive program to develop a hypersonic weapons and sensor platform, the Pentagon announced Dec. 16 (*).
The award comes about two years after the Air Force first began seeking concepts, and nine months after the Air Force Research Laboratory formally issued its solicitation.
Mayhem seeks to develop an air-breathing hypersonic system larger than the hypersonic AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon, or ARRW, and able to carry multiple payloads for both strike and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.
Mayhem is intended to build the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept, or HAWC, among others.
The contract award announcement states Mayhem is focused on “delivering a larger class air-breathing hypersonic system capable of executing multiple missions with a standardized payload interface, providing a significant technological advancement and future capability.”

“The ARRW rapid prototyping program plans for four All-Up Round Test Flights (ATFs),” an Air Force spokesperson said in response to questions posed following a Dec. 9 all-up ARRW flight test the service characterized as a success.
All-up testing refers to using the operationally-configured system.
“We will need to analyze all four planned ATFs before making a determination” as to whether to enter production, the Air Force spokesperson said.
“Our goal is to have a leave-behind capability by the early 2020s.”
The next test is tentatively slotted for the second quarter of fiscal 2023, the Air Force said, but the target area and “target set” are classified.

But DOT&E concluded in its report that ARRW is:

* ... Lacking in modeling and simulation capability to properly evaluate the weapon;
* ... Behind in warhead testing.

“Despite being under DOT&E oversight for over four years, the AGM-183A Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) Program Office does not have a DOT&E-approved Integrated Master Test Plan nor has the Office submitted an Operational Demonstration Plan,” notes the report, signed by DOT&E chief Nickolas H. Guertin.
The Air Force is developing an integrated master plan for test, he said, which DOT&E has to approve.

ARRW has completed several successful test flights, and a contract for HACM was awarded to Raytheon last September.
But despite deciding not to move forward with HAWC, DARPA and the Air Force decided to finish testing.
“The things we’ve learned from HAWC will certainly enhance future U.S. Air Force capabilities,” Walter Price of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) said.
The HAWC had two versions, a Lockheed Martin/Aerojet Rocketdyne missile and Raytheon/Northrop Grumman model.
Both had successful tests.
The Air Force chose to pursue the ARRW and HACM for its future hypersonic weapons.
HACM in particular will act as a follow-on to HAWC’s technology.

A B-52H bomber of the 412th Test Wing launched the ARRW on its second “All-Up-Round” test off the southern California coast, the Air Force said March 24.
The goal was to assess its “end-to-end performance” from captive carry through launch, booster ignition, shroud separation, and hypersonic body glide to impact.
“Hypersonic” describes a vehicle that can fly at more than five times the speed of sound.
“The test met several of the objectives,” the Air Force said, “and ARRW team engineers and testers are collecting data for further analysis.”
The Air Force declined to provide further details, citing operational security.
The ARRW flew what was described as a successful test on Dec. 9, 2022, the third in a row after a series of failures.
The December test was “the first launch of a full prototype operational missile” in the program, the 86th Test Wing at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. said in announcing the event.
That missile completed the test and “detonated in the target area.”

Even so, “there is inherent benefit to completing All-Up Round (AUR) test flights … to garner the learning and test data that will help inform future hypersonic programs and potential leave-behind capability,” Hunter wrote.
The fiscal year 2024 Air Force budget request includes $150.3 million in research, development, test, and evaluation funding to “complete” the ARRW program, Hunter noted.
